Review: While some of the hype surrounding Acting Press may have cooled in recent times, the Berlin-based label remains in rude health. That much is proved by this album-length double vinyl excursion from Intera, an all-star collaboration between PLO Man, Hashman Deejay, C3D-E. The trio starts in stunning fashion with the spaced-out, far-sighted dub techno/ambient fusion of "697", before brilliantly wrapping huggable, ultra-deep chords around a skittish techno beat on "463". They pay tribute to the glory years of Detroit techno on the all-action bustle of "548", while "653" sees them place bouncy, glassy-eyed riffs and Modem-style electronic sounds atop another retro-futurist techno groove. "414" is techno-funk after an extra-strong dose of shrooms and "410" is a superb ambient techno excursion.

Review: It's hard not to be impressed by everything Grimes touches. From the moment this album's trippy downtempo titular opener emerges from submerged depths of sound you know the latest from the Canadian is going to be a special moment in pop. As if to accentuate our point, "Delete Forever", two tracks later, introduces acoustic guitar tips while still retaining deep timbre and utilising effects to hypnotic ends on those hummed vocal loops. "IDORU", which closes out the record, feels far more playful, simple keyboard and whispered choral lyricism introduced with a backing track of bird song, before broken club beats fall in. It might be most fitting to finish a write up on the aptly-titled "You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around", its guttural bass guitars and EDM-leaning vocal stabs not the only things reminding us the world would be weaker without this one.

Review: Minneapolis deep house veteran Malcolm Moore returns to his own label Altered Moods with another blissful excursion into the farthest realms of smoked-out expression. It takes but a moment to sink into "Everydaelife" and place this sound - the kind of pattering rhythm sections and powerfully melancholic chords that you'd expect from the likes of Dubbyman, Anton Zap or Ron Trent. Moore has his own take on things though, bringing a blown out jack to the table on "Own The Nite (90s House Rescrub)"and creating a moving, downtempo funk on "Lunchtime Gaze". The more forthright grooves are impeccable too though - "Rodalies R1" hits every sweet spot a deep house lover could wish for.

Review: Five years on from the label's first 12", Whities has finally decided to offer up an album. It comes from Leif, an artist whose output has consistently been getting deeper and more downtempo the longer his career has progressed. "Loom Dream" is a fine set, with the Freerotation regular effortlessly mixing and matching gentle off-kilter rhythms, drowsy ambient chords, claustrophobic aural textures, bubbly melodies and fluid, effervescent electronics. There's much to admire across the six tracks with highlights including the humid, glassy-eyed tropical bliss of "Myrtus", the hypnotizing, Steve Reich style marimba minimalism of "Rosa" and the slow techno creep of "Borago".

  1. Sounds To Come (12:09)
Review: The joy of Sharif Laffrey's productions is the way that he's able to craft trippy, mind-altering epics using a sparse selection of elements - usually a couple of key samples, a drum machine, a TB-303 bass synth and copious amounts of brain-melting effects. He's at it again on "Sounds To Come", a 12-minute workout that seems designed for maximum hallucinatory impact. For the first five minutes it bubbles away menacingly on a bed of metallic drums, throbbing bass and wavy spoken word samples, before Laffrey ratchets up the weird noises and sharp electronics while playing with the effects. The results are spellbinding whether you're stone cold sober or completely intoxicated.

Review: Peter Croce and Moonlighter's Rocksteady Disco have reeled in local up-and-comer Jaco Matthews for a sweltering four tracker in this next release. "Drums From Detroit" is the young producer's sophomore effort and features the looped-up polyrhythmic hypnotism of "Lesson One" followed by the smooth and evocative late night deepness of "Snacks". On the flip, label co-head Croce is on remix duties as he takes on Matthews' "Revival" using the same sense of rhythm explored on the A side through low slung dynamics topped with one life-affirming narrative.

Review: Metalheadz may be in its 26th year of operation, but are still turning out high grade weaponry as innovative as any label out there. The London label's busy schedule continues apace with a blistering new one that finds Adred collaborate with four distinctive talents. First up is Commix with the dense and drilling "Interface 01", while a second effort "Recall" goes deeper and more mysterious. Dave Owen co-pilots on "2 Times", another restless banger with fizzing synths and flurries of drums, and elsewhere solo cut "Amenity" from Adred makes the most intense moment of the whole 2 discs. This is no nonsense stuff from start to finish.

Review: If you're even close to 35-years-old, the initialisation "MTV" and the word "Unplugged" likely conjures images of peak-hype Nirvana, arguably the most defining and revered of all this format's many moments. Nevertheless, Courtney Barnett's electric-free contribution to the series, recorded live in Melbourne, may well be the best conceived in the episodic series. Rather than going down the usual "Unplugged" route - hits, covers of classics and a few from the new album, sans power chords, - Barnett confirms what those paying close attention have always known to be true. Yes, she's an inspiring and inspired artist, as work like "Nameless, Faceless" shows (here turned into a duet even more resonant and chilling than the original). But she's also a community leader, a gifted collaborator who has nurtured peers - and with half this album reimagining others, she's clearly still determined to let them shine.

Review: Just when you thought it was safe to trust that former Women member Cindy Lee/Patrick Flegel has come up with something truly romantic and suited to its Valentine's Day release, a sample gets thrown into the mix, wherein a female voice talks about feeling dejected by Jesus but simultaneously rejecting Satan, thus being cast into some nothingness where neither good nor evil is your friend.

In truth there were smatterings of horror show blood all over this well before that point. It's a creeping menace hidden below 1960s blissful naivety, which makes the whole thing more effective. In certain moments it erupts from below, cacophonies of tortured noise and EBM bass, before the wind rushes through and replaces a storm with blue sky harmonies and innocent sunny days. It's electronic experimentation, with roots still traceable back to the old guitar band, and added sax. And eeriness. Exceptional stuff.

Review: Following on from the excellent "Scene In Mirage" reissue that broke O Yuki Conjugate to a whole new crowd, Emotional Rescue return to the archives of the over-looked Nottingham "dirty ambient" outfit. Their second LP "Into Dark Water", originally released in 1987, is just as powerful as the first - a hypnagogic journey fuelled by a global stew of sound, feeding into elegant, evocative pieces. Fans of classic Jon Hassell will find much to enjoy here, but equally those appreciating the exotic post punk undercurrents of 23 Skidoo et al will easily find themselves drawn to the likes of "Ba-makala". Stunning, borderless musings from a hidden treasure of the UK's post-industrial heritage.

Review: If you're stuck for a Valentine's day gift for the vinyl lover in your life, you might want to take a look at this limited, heart-shaped pressing of Donnie and Joe Emerson's cult 1979 cut "Baby", which has successfully been covered in recent years by Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland, and more surprisingly Ariel Pink and Damn Funk. Here it resides on the A-side, where the lovelorn brothers cut a heavy-hearted path through lo-fi blue-eyed soul pastures. B-side "Tonight" is a previously unreleased gem recorded during the same period. It, too, is emotion-rich and lo-fi in construction, with the pair adding their sublime vocals to a backing track rich in steel guitar solos, chunky bass and flanged guitar chords.

Review: February 2020 marks the tenth anniversary of the release of Gil Scott-Heron's final studio album "I'm New Here", a set that was later brilliantly reworked by Jamie XX in 2011 ("We're New Here"). To celebrate the album's tenth birthday, XL Recordings has decided to offer up "We're New Again", a fresh "reinterpretation" of the Richard Russell produced set by contemporary jazz hero and beat-maker Maya McCraven. His vision is loose, languid, deep and jazzy, with languid jazz drumming, tight hip-hop beats, soft-touch instrumentation, liquid jazz solos and funk-fuelled basslines combining beneath Scott-Heron's gravelly spoken word vocals. It's an inspired re-invention all told and one fully in keeping with the essence of Scott-Heron's own work. In other words, it's a must-have.

Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's latest round of spiritual and percussive dancefloor workouts were apparently "randomly selected" from the vaults of DJ tools and work-in-progress tracks tucked away under the floorboards at Sacred Rhythm HQ. Naturally there's nothing genuinely "half-finished" here, just a quartet of cuts worthy of your attention. He begins with "Elegua", a West African style workout that boasts call-and-response group vocals and a loose, languid tribal rhythm track, before moving towards heavy Afro-house territory via the deep, dark analogue bass, machine beats and densely layered percussion of "Makussa PT Three". Over on side B, "Di Mayo" layers sharp, spacey synths and lashings of special effects to a dubbed-out Afro-house rhythm, while the gloriously colourful "Afrofunkjazz" lives up to its title.

Review: Three years on from the release of the last Collocutor album, a new line-up has headed into the studio under the watchful eye of founding member Tamar Osborn. The results are uniformly impressive, with Osborn's six new compositions largely exploring a deeper, more atmospheric blend of late night jazz. Of course, there are still mind-altering, heavyweight workouts to enjoy - see the discordant post-punk jazz-rock fuzz of "The Angry One", an aggressive blast of razor-sharp horns, squally guitars and sweaty drums - but in general the tracks that linger longest in the memory are those that shuffle menacingly in pursuit of bittersweet, slow-burn release. For proof, check out the brilliant "Pause", "Continuation" and the ultra-smoky opener "Deep Peace".

Review: If this is your first encounter with Best Coast since the dreamy, sun-kissed rock 'n' roll of debut "Crazy For You", be prepared for a surprise. Loyal fans, meanwhile, are likely to see this latest offering as a logical progression for the talented lot, launching from the starting blocks with enviable propulsion and refusing to hold anything back until the record reaches its conclusion. There's so much muscle involved at moments you could be forgiven for thinking the Pixies were at work - "Everything Has Changed" could well have scored a grungy 1990s flick. In other moments, their pop sensibilities come to the fore, perhaps more than at any moment in the past, "For the First Time" recalling the likes of Fleetwood Mac or Blondie's most electronic moments. An altogether proud and confident record, if this is where Best Coast have got themselves we implore everyone to catch up as soon as possible.

Review: Nobody ever said albums, or even songs, had to be about big themes and grandiose ideas. And it's this truth that has guided this lush, tranquil offering from Robin Saville. Dedicated to taking a simple stroll, whether that's through the city streets for which this album provides the perfect antidote, or captivating rural landscapes the field recordings, drone work and acoustic instrumentation feel born out of. Best heard as a complete set, while there are clear differences between the six tracks and across its 40-minute playing time, this is really all about giving yourself fully to the whole experience. Meditative in many of its qualities, it's a sumptuous exercise in relaxing the mind and feeding the soul, suited to soundtracking the remnants of a heavy weekend as much as the beginning of a fresh week.

Review: Four years - or thereabouts - is a long time to wait for any band to follow up an album. It's particularly long when the band are Peggy Sue, and the preceding LP was "Choir Of Echoes"; for us one of 2014's most startlingly engaging efforts, at the time positioning them in the upper echelons of alternative rock. "Vices" leads by the example of its title. At times the sound here is filthier than any bad habit, and twice as compelling. Matching swooning harmonies with sparse guitar work, it grows, grooves and chugs into your conscious like a slow juggernaut, eerie yet hopeful, deeply atmospheric but also immediate and inescapable. There are lashings of 1960s pop, with the unapologetic noisiness of anthem-heavy Gen X guitar bands careering through any sweet imagery conjured by more delicate moments. Excellent work.

Review: Since it first landed on streaming platforms last summer, there's been plenty of hype around "Hi It's Me", the debut proper of Anime-obsessed, London-based alt-rap upstart Ashnikko. Listening to this first vinyl pressing (courtesy of major label Parlophone) it's easy to see why. Her rapped and sung lyrics are raw, explicit and in-your face, the beats fuzzy (think grime, trap and drill put through the mangler), the surrounding electronics colourful and fizzing and the basslines bold (particularly on "Stupid", a deliciously low-slung club slammer). It's a real musical mish-mash but one that resonates strongly; clearly, the potty-mouthed American is going right to the top.
