Miss Anthropocene (limited translucent pink vinyl LP + booklet) (1 per customer)

  8. You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around (2:42)
  9. Before The Fever (3:31)
  10. IDORU (4:47)
Review: It's hard not to be impressed by everything Grimes touches. From the moment this album's trippy downtempo titular opener emerges from submerged depths of sound you know the latest from the Canadian is going to be a special moment in pop. As if to accentuate our point, "Delete Forever", two tracks later, introduces acoustic guitar tips while still retaining deep timbre and utilising effects to hypnotic ends on those hummed vocal loops. "IDORU", which closes out the record, feels far more playful, simple keyboard and whispered choral lyricism introduced with a backing track of bird song, before broken club beats fall in. It might be most fitting to finish a write up on the aptly-titled "You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around", its guttural bass guitars and EDM-leaning vocal stabs not the only things reminding us the world would be weaker without this one.

  7. Holger Czukay & U-She - "Longing" (4:27)
Review: In the early years of the label, Claremont 56 delivered a slew of crate digging compilations. Now boss man Paul 'Mudd' Murphy has decided to flip the script by launching a brand new series dedicated to new and unheard music from the label's vaults. There's plenty to get excited about on volume one, with the set offering a mixture of fine dancefloor workouts (the killer disco dub of HF International's superb cover of Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That" and the krautrock thrust of Fursatt's "Leerlauf") and more languid downtempo jams (see the Balearic bliss offered up by Statues, Hear & Now and Abby Spells). There's also a previously unheard collaboration between the late, great husband-and-wide team Holgar Czukay and U-She that's worth the admission price on its own.

Review: It's not hard to see why Reggie Andrews & The Fellowship's "Mystic Beauty" is a holy grail record for jazz lovers that has long been unavailable and often fetches four digit prices on second hand markets. A earthy, stunning set of modal soul jazz from the LA underground of the 60s brimming with glowing piano chords and mellifluous keys drifting next to lilting trumpets and gently swaying drums, with the overtness of Afro-Cuban rhythms and Latin sunshine. Whether it's spiritual-jazz, soul-jazz, jazz-funk, none quite capture the musical beauty of this most profound and life-enriching album, which is so masterfully led by pianist Reggie Andrews.

Review: Scuzzy, sludgy, creeping, muscular and delicate-enough to feel there could be a break in its bones at any moment. King Krule returns with a third album that once again tears skin open to reveal the heartfelt emotions within its lo-fi, muttered, pseudo-rock tones. Referencing Sleaford Mods on heavy opiates wouldn't be too far from the mark at times, although we're not here to simply use touchstones - Archy Marshall deserves better than that. Despite almost everything on "Man Alive!" being so quiet, it packs an incredible level of noise. Subtle licks, strange details and a deceptive depth would be one way to describe the whole package. Grunge tones ("Supermarche"), lo-fi blues pop (""Don't Let The Dragon) Draag On") are just some of the nuances it's possible to pick upon, making for a wholly original work that captivates, relaxes and uneases in equal measure.

Review: Formerly known as The Greatest Hoax, there's nothing remotely fake about Washington D.C.'s T.R. Jordan. The work of some serious talent, both in terms of its arrangements and those working behind the scenes (Rafael Anton Irissari, of legendary Ann Arbour imprint Ghostly International is on mixing and production duties), the results of efforts to create this album are truly gripping, albeit in a gentle and heartbreakingly tender way. Whoever the "You" in the title is needs to count themselves very lucky indeed. The six tracks presented here are spellbinding contemporary classical overtures of such spectacular beauty they seem destined to score the most humanistic moments of sci fi. From the redemptive mood of "Leap Of Faith", to the fairytale piano stunner that is "Bruised World", here's proof that storytelling needs no words.

Review: Released right at the very end of 2019, Stormzy's much-trumpeted second album, "Heavy Is The Head", is one of the most significant releases in recent times. Made with a gigantic cast list of producers and guest vocalists - Aitch, Burna Boy, Headie One, H.E.R, Tiana Major9, Yebba, Fred Gibson and MJ Cole included - the set includes some of his most thoughtful and incisive lyrics to date, as well as some particularly ear-catching mutations of grime that will further solidify his place as one of Britain's most important artists of the 21st century. Yes, it does include more nods towards pop music - he's a Glastonbury headliner after all - but the beats remain tough.

Review: While most records invite you to listen, this retrospective celebration of Brazilian songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist Priscilla Ermel feels more like something that's inviting you into its own universe. A strange, exotic place to most western ears, if World Music wasn't such a generic and painfully sweeping term we'd apply it here. Sounds of the Amazon, sounds of the other, sounds of traditional emigre folk and a load of stuff that defies accurate description, this collection is impossible not to fall in love with. Having spent time learning the sonic ways of indigenous tribes in her homeland, then taking those instruments (among others) and re-appropriating them via field records and electronic synthesisers, she manages to create things of sombre beauty ("Meditacao"), work of percussive seduction ("Americua") and tracks packing mysterious, fantastical, futurist experimentation ("Mensageiro").

Review: You can't help but be impressed by the trajectory evident in Agnes Obel's work since she first stopped us dead in tracks on 2010's debut, "Philharmonics". Instrumentally, she's still a maestro capable of grabbing you by the tear ducts with stunning, graceful melodies. But lyrically, she might be on course to becoming one of the most expressive we've got. And that's something to treasure. "Myopia" doesn't feel celebratory, mind. In fact anything but. It's an atmospherically dark, nocturnal journey into equally dark themes, told with nighttime language. From asking corpses what the other side is like, ahead of their physical bodies being lowered into the lightless ground ("Island Of Doom"), to the pain and frustrations of insomnia (the appropriately-named "Broken Sleep"), it's not an album that will ready you for the arrival of spring, but it's easy to find yourself falling for its understated melancholia.

Review: Five years on from the label's first 12", Whities has finally decided to offer up an album. It comes from Leif, an artist whose output has consistently been getting deeper and more downtempo the longer his career has progressed. "Loom Dream" is a fine set, with the Freerotation regular effortlessly mixing and matching gentle off-kilter rhythms, drowsy ambient chords, claustrophobic aural textures, bubbly melodies and fluid, effervescent electronics. There's much to admire across the six tracks with highlights including the humid, glassy-eyed tropical bliss of "Myrtus", the hypnotizing, Steve Reich style marimba minimalism of "Rosa" and the slow techno creep of "Borago".

Review: Second time around for David "Move D" Moufang and Benjamin Brunn's first full-length collaboration, a set of unsurprisingly deep, minimalistic house, techno and ambient workouts that first appeared in record stores way back in 2006. It's one of those albums that's arguably best listened to while flat on your back in an intoxicated state, despite the presence of such hypnotic, early morning club workouts as "On The Magic Bus" and the dreamy and delightful "O". You see, the majority of the album's eight tracks are spaced-out in the extreme and all the more alluring for it, as Moufang and Brunn expertly showcase their ability to create impeccable slices of hushed, otherworldly electronic minimalism.

Review: A warm welcome back to TRAMP's flagship compilation series "Movements", a long-running institution that brings together rare finds from the German label's crate-digging chiefs. As with its predecessors, this tenth volume is an eclectic affair that's presented in chronological order (IE oldest tracks first, newest last). There are far too many highlights to mention, though our current favourites include the swinging soul-jazz of Phylis Hendricks' "My Man", the fiery, Mod-style rhythm and blues of "Coming Home Baby" by Ronny Pellers Satin Sound, the dancefloor-focused Latin soul brilliance of The Lido's "Evil Ways" and the superb soul-funk obscurity that is the Headliners "Little Sister (Part 1 & 2)".

Review: Back in 1984, American pianist Nate Morgan delivered his second album for Nimbus West Records, "Retribution, Reparation", a superb set of politically-charged hard modal jazz tracks shot through with Afro-futurism and a clear air of spirituality. Ever since it's become something of a collector's item, hence this facsimile reissue from Outernational Sounds. It boasts four of his own wild, hard-wired compositions - each of which contains nods towards free-jazz and some killer saxophone work by fellow Nimbus Collective member Jesse Sharps - plus inspired covers of Herbie Hancock's "One Finger Snaps" and Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday".

Review: In 1980, avant-garde musician Ellen Fullman decided to build her own unusual, grand-scale instrument out of 70-foot long wires and a metal pole. Played by the performer moving their rosin-covered hands over the wires, "the long string instrument" (as she imaginatively called it) became the sole sound source of a trio of tape-only albums Fullman recorded in the 1980s. This double vinyl set includes recordings from two of those, "In The Sea" and "Work For Four Players & 90 Strings". The pieces are long, seductive, minimalist and meditative, offering shifting, droning tones similar in style to some Indian instruments. It's remarkable stuff all told and well worth further investigation.

Review: Metalheadz may be in its 26th year of operation, but are still turning out high grade weaponry as innovative as any label out there. The London label's busy schedule continues apace with a blistering new one that finds Adred collaborate with four distinctive talents. First up is Commix with the dense and drilling "Interface 01", while a second effort "Recall" goes deeper and more mysterious. Dave Owen co-pilots on "2 Times", another restless banger with fizzing synths and flurries of drums, and elsewhere solo cut "Amenity" from Adred makes the most intense moment of the whole 2 discs. This is no nonsense stuff from start to finish.

  12. Liberty (feat YT) (5:14)
Review: Since 2017, Steve "BCee" Jeffery and Andrew "Villem" Wilson have been operating as The Vanguard Project, in the process delivering a swathe of EPs for Spearhead and Fokuz that explore the more soulful, sun-drenched end of the drum & bass spectrum. This long-awaited debut album expands a little on their core sound - think nods to dub and reggae, occasional gnarly basslines and even a rush-inducing rave workout or two - whilst remaining rooted in what would have once been called liquid drum & bass. As a result, it's a set that manages to cram in a lot of high-class dancefloor moments while working well as an album you'll repeatedly want to listen to from start to finish.

Review: If you're even close to 35-years-old, the initialisation "MTV" and the word "Unplugged" likely conjures images of peak-hype Nirvana, arguably the most defining and revered of all this format's many moments. Nevertheless, Courtney Barnett's electric-free contribution to the series, recorded live in Melbourne, may well be the best conceived in the episodic series. Rather than going down the usual "Unplugged" route - hits, covers of classics and a few from the new album, sans power chords, - Barnett confirms what those paying close attention have always known to be true. Yes, she's an inspiring and inspired artist, as work like "Nameless, Faceless" shows (here turned into a duet even more resonant and chilling than the original). But she's also a community leader, a gifted collaborator who has nurtured peers - and with half this album reimagining others, she's clearly still determined to let them shine.

Review: Just when you thought it was safe to trust that former Women member Cindy Lee/Patrick Flegel has come up with something truly romantic and suited to its Valentine's Day release, a sample gets thrown into the mix, wherein a female voice talks about feeling dejected by Jesus but simultaneously rejecting Satan, thus being cast into some nothingness where neither good nor evil is your friend.

In truth there were smatterings of horror show blood all over this well before that point. It's a creeping menace hidden below 1960s blissful naivety, which makes the whole thing more effective. In certain moments it erupts from below, cacophonies of tortured noise and EBM bass, before the wind rushes through and replaces a storm with blue sky harmonies and innocent sunny days. It's electronic experimentation, with roots still traceable back to the old guitar band, and added sax. And eeriness. Exceptional stuff.

Review: 2020 marks the 30th birthday of Network Records, a label that did arguably more than any other in the early 90s to champion both US and UK techno. As part of their celebrations they'll be reissuing some key singles and albums from their catalogue, starting with this 1991 compilation of key Derrick May productions. Now stretched across two slabs of wax rather than one to guarantee a louder cut, "Innovator" contains a wealth of vital early Motor City techno classics, from the acid-powered insanity of "Nude Photo" and the rushing, piano-heavy rush of "Strings of Life", to the thrilling sci-fi futurism of "Wiggin" and the deep techno warmth of "Hand Over Hand".

Review: The world has found itself in a significant hurry. We have also found ourselves in the most distracted period of time in history; finding it tremendously difficult to remain in a moment of stillness, quietude, or allow time for self-reflection. Conversely, our vast universe continues its expansion into infinite development; a climate of deafening silence in a boundless four-dimensional continuum. It remains mesmerizing with a quiet allure that freely suspends in space-time; a true account of the beautiful unknown that sparks hope, reverence, and an awesome realization of impenetrable mystery.

"Stasis Sounds For Long-Distance Space Travel" is audibly rich in its delivery with an array of tranquil billows and patient tones. It is a journey and soundtrack that commences at Earth's thermosphere, gently moving towards the untraveled parts of space, lushly floating on forever.

These arrangements represent a group of celestial transmissions that are delicate in nature and intended for the listener to embrace moments of stillness, quietude and reflection, of which are on a trajectory of extinction at a place we call Earth.

Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: While you'll find plenty of experienced composers and producers on A Strangely Isolated Place's quietly impressive roster of artists, the Californian label is also excellent at showcasing new talents. They're at it again here, offering up a debut from previously unheard Sardinian artist Blinkar Fran Norr. The eight tracks tend towards the more becalmed, meditative and immersive end of the ambient spectrum, with Norr prioritizing swelling, stretched-out chords, hushed aural textures, atmospheric field recordings, ghostly strings and unearthly instrumental sounds that invite you in for dinner and then persuade you to stay for the weekend. It's beautiful and beguiling, for sure, but also touched with a hint of sadness. As debuts go, it's really rather impressive.

Review: One of the pleasing by-products of the recent electro revival has been the return of Aux 88, a legendary Detroit quartet whose armour plated, bass heavy take on the style made them one of Michigan's finest musical exports in the 1990s. "Counterparts", their first new album in ten years, is therefore big news. After opening with their warm, funk-fuelled take on Motor City techno - the sci-fi brilliance of "Intel" - the four-piece rushes through a range of killer, club-friendly electro jams in their trademark style (tough drums, funky bass, vocoder vocals). Highlights include the moody "My Electro Visions", the foreboding "Stereolized", the ghetto-tech influenced "Pothole Paradise" and the far-sighted, Cybotron-meets-Kraftwerk style goodness of "Electro In Key of Funk".

Review: It might not be quite as groundbreaking as Dangermouse's "The Grey Album", which expertly blended elements of The Beatles "The White Album" with Jay-Z acapellas, but Amerigo Gazzaway's fusion of James Brown and the Notorious B.I.G is equally as impressive in its own way. His blends of Brown breaks, vocal snippets and instrument samples with hip-hop beats and Biggie Smalls acapellas are uniformly brilliant, expertly crafted, imaginative and undeniably dancefloor-friendly. It's the sort of album that you didn't think that you needed but really do; certainly, any of the 11 tracks will get a rapturous response when unleashed on dancefloors.

Review: February 2020 marks the tenth anniversary of the release of Gil Scott-Heron's final studio album "I'm New Here", a set that was later brilliantly reworked by Jamie XX in 2011 ("We're New Here"). To celebrate the album's tenth birthday, XL Recordings has decided to offer up "We're New Again", a fresh "reinterpretation" of the Richard Russell produced set by contemporary jazz hero and beat-maker Maya McCraven. His vision is loose, languid, deep and jazzy, with languid jazz drumming, tight hip-hop beats, soft-touch instrumentation, liquid jazz solos and funk-fuelled basslines combining beneath Scott-Heron's gravelly spoken word vocals. It's an inspired re-invention all told and one fully in keeping with the essence of Scott-Heron's own work. In other words, it's a must-have.

Review: Following on from the excellent "Scene In Mirage" reissue that broke O Yuki Conjugate to a whole new crowd, Emotional Rescue return to the archives of the over-looked Nottingham "dirty ambient" outfit. Their second LP "Into Dark Water", originally released in 1987, is just as powerful as the first - a hypnagogic journey fuelled by a global stew of sound, feeding into elegant, evocative pieces. Fans of classic Jon Hassell will find much to enjoy here, but equally those appreciating the exotic post punk undercurrents of 23 Skidoo et al will easily find themselves drawn to the likes of "Ba-makala". Stunning, borderless musings from a hidden treasure of the UK's post-industrial heritage.

To celebrate, the label's current owners (BMG fact fans) have decided to offer up a series of celebratory compilations featuring some of the imprint's biggest dancefloor hits. There's plenty to set the pulse racing on this first volume, from the stab-heavy, rave-era filth of CLS's "Can You Feel It (In House Dub)" and the wild acid insanity of Wink's "Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin Acid Funk)", to the bouncy, mid-to-late-90s US garage chunkiness of Groove Patrol's "Need Your Love", Hardrive's "Deep Inside" and the organ-heavy sweatiness of George Morel's "Let's Groove".

Review: Is there a more on-point modern jazz label than Chicago's International Anthem? The imprint has a knack of releasing far-sighted music that goes way beyond standard jazz, offering up spiritual and experimental fusions fully in-keeping with the genre's genre-defying roots. This solo set from Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker - his second for International Anthem following 2016's "The New Breed" - is a superb example. Breathlessly eclectic in the most inspiring of ways, it sees Parker combine virtuoso jazz guitar solos and mangled, guitar-powered aural textures with all manner of live and sampled sounds to create a dizzyingly good album that variously touches on soul-jazz, post-rock, free improvisation, Terry Riley style minimalist soundscapes, ambient, jazz-funk and much more besides. In a word: brilliant.
