Review: Four Flies are dab hands at digging out the finest curios from the hidden depths of Italian music culture, and this is surely one of their proudest proclamations. Guiliano Sorgini recorded the soundtrack to Riccardo Fellini's TV movie Zoo Folle in 1974, and the soundtrack came out the same year. Far more than a set of modest instrumentals or functional library music, this is raging, heavy psych funk of the highest order, with raunchy riffs, bugged-out flute, intense percussive beatdowns and so much more besides. Whichever plucky diggers originally unearthed this holy grail must have lost their tiny minds, because even framed with the significance it deserves, this is an out-of-this world record we're very fortunate to have back in our reach.

Review: Zone Black almost never was. The KPM music library originally commissioned Emil Amos to make a collection of new material which could be used in television and film. A little way into this process, the executive who did that hiring departed, and the artist opted to take what was there to the Drag City label in a bid to turn it into a proper album. The end result is something between the two. For all intents and purposes, plenty here fits into the library definition, but this is a far more personal, deeper and coherent take on the format. The foundations of library music - commercial use - soon thrown out with the dishwater, and instead the focus was on creating movements and arrangements that would hold up on their own, and create entire narratives independently, for themselves. Removed from what's happening on screen, you can live in these tracks and nowhere else.

Review: K.O.G. serves up new album Zone 6 Agege, his first offering for the Heavenly Sweetness label. The title of it pays homage to a small coastal suburb in Accra the capital of Ghana where he grew up. The record is an ode to its nature and was recorded back in November 2020. It is a dramatic album steep in history and traditional sounds as well as looking forward and taking Afro-jazz in bold new directions. It is a hugely expansive and dramatic listen with shuffling funk grooves, more spacious and spiritual cuts and sun kissed rhythms perfect for those warmer days.

Review: Larry Manteca's Zombie Mandingo album arrived back in 2013 and in the danced plus has only ever been available digitally. Now it makes its debut on wax and remains a bold listen that was devised as a soundtrack to a non-existent exploitation film. It fuses funk, jazz, and Afrobeat influences with plenty of niche cinematic references such as the zombies in Lucio Fulci's horrors and Umberto Lenzi's cannibalistic adventures. The resulting mash up is beguiling to say the least with horror-tinged exotica next to Fela Kuti rhythms and elements of Italian Library music and colourful psychedelia. A boundary pushing work to say the least.

Review: This first-ever reissue of Zodiac has been restored and remastered from Barney Wilen's personal copy of it after no others could be found for the job. It landed originally on Disques Vogue in 1966 and was recorded after Barney had been touring with Art Blakey's Jazz Messenger's and Miles Davis. It's a super exploration of free jazz that is dedicated to the signs of the zodiac. Photographer Jean Lariviere created the photos for the artwork which at the time was intended to create a film and storyline to go with the music, but the concept was never quite properly finished.

Despite Ziggy being Bowie's most loved alter ego, he retired it much to the chagrin of fans (and band members, who had no idea it was coming) live on stage at London's Hammersmith Odeon. The farewell speech he gave is included here along with a medley of 'The Jean Genie'/'Love Me Do' and 'Round And Round' featuring Jeff Beck and plenty of other Bowie classics from that era. Review: The mega talent that is Georgia Anne Muldrow again showcases her producer, vocalist and musicianship skills on this superb new album for Nature Sounds. It is a superb blend of jazz, hip hop, funk and the most masterful lyrics from Detroit rapper Elzhi. The MC was of course a core part of the legendary group Slum Village so comes with real quality deep in his bars. This collaborative album is a real high-water mark for hip hop with mega grooves, silky synths and whirlwind rhymes that all have a fine underlying message.

Review: Big Crown Records is proud to present Zero Grace, Liam Bailey's sophomore album on the label. Following the success of 2020's Ekundayo album, the tried and true chemistry of Bailey and producer Leon Michels (El Michels Affair) is on full display again as they take the sound they established and push it further. On Zero Grace they lean more into the bleeding heart singer-songwriter side of Liam. On opener 'Holding On', Bailey speaks to his observations & fears when looking out at the world in front of him and also to the dedication it has taken to get on the other side of his personal trials & tribulations. 'Dance With Me', meanwhile, is an instantly infectious two-stepper that nods to those incredible soul records that were coming out of Jamaica during the early reggae days. Bailey addresses the racial tensions that plague humanity and encourages everyone to step up and do their part to help foster equality.
