ZYX Italo Disco New Generation: Vinyl Edition Vol 6
VARIOUS
Cat: ZYX 559661. Rel: 03 May 23

Disco/Nu-Disco
Lars La Ville - "Twist" (feat Gauvey-Kern - La Ville extended Italo remix) (5:22)
Sauvage - "Do You Want Me" (Also Playable mono Zyx edit) (5:29)
Diego - "Walk In The Night" (Flemming Dalum remix) (7:31)
Love Kills - "Touch Me" (Special remix) (6:14)
Stockholm Nightlife - "Back Together Again" (feat Helly - Cliff Wedge extended) (7:17)
Soulya Id - "The Day You'll Get Somebody" (extended mix) (5:03)
Marc Fruttero & Alex Papale - "What You Want" (Anton Orlov remix) (5:41)
Valerie Dore - "Get Closer" (Luca Debonaire extended mix) (5:44)
Review: This one does what it says on the tin. German compilers ZYX have put together a stonking array of contemporary Italo disco cuts, showing off what modern producers can do with a now well-defined sound. Artists including Stockholm Nightlife, Diego, Love Kills, and Valerie Dore all appear, deploying lovesick, city-slicking themes: you've got gated snares, riffy synth arps and impassioned masc vocals aplenty. Marc Fruttero & Alex Papale's 'What You Want' is particularly dreamy and atmospheric, owing to Italo's longstanding ability to evoke more than just its poppy structure. No wonder the genre is a favourite among the world's biggest-name DJs.

Review: The next vinyl edition of ZYX Italo Disco New Generation features eight selected New Generation songs that have been particularly popular with Italo Disco fans in recent years. Included this time are: Savage with their classic 'Italodisco' remixed by Centre Neptune boss Flemming Dalum, the addictive and pop-inflected power of Bunny X's 'Words' featuring the unmistakable Fred Ventura on vocals, as well as the neon-lit romance of Tam Harrow's classic 'Your Love Is So Nice' (1st extended mix) among many more. Review: Joshua Smeltink is a pianist and producer who works under the On-Ly alias. Since around 2017 has he been playing local bars as well as being a part of a number of different bands. He is currently busy with his own On-Ly band which features Carl Lindeberg on bass, Henry Hicks strumming the guitar and Bryce Zelno from Astral Feld on drums. This heavyweight new album explores worldly rhythms with plenty of off-beat grooves, finger clicks, hulling great drum hits, dark synth sounds and expressive broken beats and jazz melodies to make for an album that is as primal sounding as it is beautiful.

Review: Yuna's self-titled debut album came with three tracks produced by none other than Pharrell Williams. That was a decade ago when she was just 24 years old and one of the hottest properties in the scene. Freshly signed to Fader for the album, it was a great showcase of the young singer's voice across a mix of sounds that took in r&b, soul and pop with a mature edge and moving emotional narrative. It was initially only put out on CD but a decade on that is corrected as Fader drop this vinyl version just in time for Christmas.

Review: This new album from Benny Sings comes in various different formats - a blue vinyl included, while this version is a straight back wax copy. It features Amsterdam-based artist Benny Sings - who recently had his ART album reissued on Sings - returning with an all new and new eighth solo studio album. For the first time, it is one that finds him working with a single producer throughout - and that producer is the well known beatmaker Mr Kenny Beats. It was a partnership that came together after a chat over social media and the pair immediately felt comfortable with each other. Benny instructed Kenny that he wanted to make the biggest record he has to date and that's what they have done.

Review: Medway's garage rock king Allan Crockford has credits flittering all the way back to the 80's including the likes of The Prisoners, Billy Childish's Thee Headcoats, The Solarflares, and even the OG line-up of the James Taylor Quartet, to name but a handful. Keeping sharp and busy, however, The Galileo 7 serves as his own passion project; melding 60s mod-beat garage rock with jangling psychedelic pop, leading to a sonic bickering between anthemic hooks and fuzzed out, twinkling guitar lines. Following two exceptional full-lengths released through Damaged Goods; 2017's Tear Your Minds Wide Open! and 2019's There Is Only Now, the collective return after a half-decade of respite to deliver another batch of lysergic, hazy power pop goodness, intended for the wannabe mod/hippie in all of us.

Review: This limited edition white vinyl album takes us back to 1987 when Michael Jackson was still very much the King of Pop and at the height of his powers. It was in that year that he was on one of his many epic world tours and this night in particular took him to Yokohama Stadium. The maverick performer and gifted vocalist worked through what were already some of his most tired and tested hits such as 'Beat It', 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' and 'Bad' while he also served up a rare Jackson 5 medley in which he mixed up 'I Want You Back/The Love You Save/Can You Feel It'. Classic.

Review: Lucinda Chua is currently based in South London and is a singer, songwriter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. She crafts elegant and emotive music mainly using her voice and cello, plenty of effects units and draws on ambient for her inspiration. What results is atmospheric and intimate music that is utterly enchaining as this album on 4AD proves across ten tracks that come after she spent an intensive period studying Chinese dance forms. Lead single 'Echo' is a pop song about ancestral trauma that walks a thin line between respect for the past and the hope and freedom of a new future. It's captivating indeed.

Last time out they served up an album inspired by an imaginary film, and this time on Yeti Season they impress with a whole new bunch of inspirations. Review: The aural aesthetics of Flying Lotus go hand-in-hand with film scores. There was the original music contributed to the Blade Runner 2049 anime prequel, tunes for Carole & Tuesday, and the small matter of his label Brainfeeder's new film division. Now we have Yasuke, his first full score.

If you're unaware, Yasuke is the Japanese animated series that's been a hit among fans of Far Eastern cartoons since arriving on Netflix. So far so factual, what about the actual tracks themselves? Well, this collection of arrangements is at once very FlyLo, and then not that FlyLo at all. Yes, there's plenty of deep genre diving going on, nodding to freewheeling jazz, prog rock, trap and more. But here it's much more minimalistic than many might be used to - resulting in a thoroughly original approach to soundtracking a samurai story, void of stereotypes, while never fully breaking from tradition.

Review: Almost two full decades into their curious career, slacker-psych experimentalists The Pheromoans have never been ones to shy away from the esoteric or mundane. Led by the droll, deadpan delivery and unique world view of primary songwriter Russell Walker, LP number 13 sees the collective lean ever further into topical malaise whilst honing their fuzzed out, post-college-rock jangles into their most digestible and direct form yet. With the title Wyrd Psearch, Walker takes direct aim "at the ubiquity of people claiming things are eerie or weird/wyrd in the present cultural milieu", while the word-search artwork is intended to highlight our cultures' obsessive search for meaning in an increasingly illogical world. Twinkling no wave riffs, glistening synth lines and muted requests to loved ones requesting their presence on a trip to town to reup on prescription meds.

These days he releases on iDEAL, Fit Sound, Borft and Klasse Wrecks, but he cut his techno teeth on labels like Hybrid, Svek and H. Productions. Clad in artwork details by Swedish graffiti legend Nug, Wormhole Of Time comprises unreleased cuts and long out-of-print jams spanning many of Huhta's aliases. The release also comes with a zine featuring photographs and an interview reflecting on Huhta's multifarious life in music.

Review: "Uffe's Words and Endings is a dub addled breach of sonic warfare." So says the officially approved text to accompany this release. Whoever wrote it isn't wrong, either. Long-since turning heads with releases on highly regarded but often unsung labels like Tartelet, Pets, and Delusions of Grandeur, we should already be expecting some special greatness from the artist in question. And yet Words & End-ings exceeds those expectations.

The juxtaposition between the soulful, jazz-driven, loose, 10PM atmospherics of 'Immortal' and 'The Moon''s sharp, stubby, staccato techiness is just one case in point. This is a dance music album that should be in album format, a night out on one record, all your memories and your current after party. At a point in time where we can all agree things are looking worrying, here is reassurance.

Review: Kareem Lotfy and Heith are back with their Ghost Lemurs project, and arguably their most conceptual and captivating record to date. Describing Wombs & Spirit Aliens as "a type of folk music devoid of a specific homeland, but resulting from the authors' heritages, simultaneously divided and united by the Mediterranean Sea", it feels like stepping out of our traditional timeline and into another dimension. Unarguably psychedelic - you can almost hear the shooting stars wisp by core arrangements as you desperately try and stargaze in the mind's eye - it's also unarguably earthly. Polyrhythms and melodic motifs seem to be taken straight from the ceremonial practices of long lost communities and tribes. Those who built their civilisations around a connection with the terrestrial and extraterrestrial, something most of us can only really hope to imagine in 2024.

Review: XAO is back on his long-term label Canvas with another scintillating new album, Wirehead. It is his second following the head tuning 2019 debut Eternal Care Unit and it comes with liquid metal surfaces, chrome sheen and wispy sound design that is utterly futuristic. Though very much a clean digital album laden with video game FX and contemporary sound design, there is warmth and humanity in these tracks. Delayed percussion, guitar fuzz, celestial chords and rich, hearty bass all make it so as techno, IDM and electro are all fused together.

Review: The fourth LP outing from the Nottingham band sees revelling in 60s psychedelia and folk sounds, checking in somewhere between the whimsical glories of The Left Banke, the powering grooves of The Doors and the beguiling melodicism of Nick Drake. It's a nostalgic sound but it's not lacking in dynamics, especially when driven along by the glittering, sparkling drums of founding member Adam Carr, which often feel like the lead instrument as the vocals of Leonore Wheatley and the guitar, bass and keyboards mesh into a hazy supporting act.

Review: Veteran electrohead and former artist on the Rephlex Records roseter DMX Krew's Ed DMX takes the well-known story by Jorge Luis Borges of The Library of Babel, said to contain all the different languages of the earth. Some deep philosophical thought has gone into the album's concept, but we'll leave that to Ed to explain. Instead, we'll tell you that from beginning to end there's plenty of the kind of trademark 80s synth playfulness in evidence, with a generally more mellow and soundtrack-related rather than frenetic and dancefloor-filling vibe in evidence, even on faster tracks like 'The Combed Thunderclap'. Still, Ed knows what he's doing when it comes to this kind of leftfield electro gear, and it's a rewarding, never boring listen.

He is a beat maker and sample wizard who takes cues from greats old and new like Flying Lotus, J Dilla and Madlib, but all with his perspective. On Whip Music he hooks up with a guest for each tune and they all help bring the music alive. It is super sweet throughout, with neo-boom bap styles, lush soul synths and boogie bass with plenty of emotive vocals and spaced out moods. It delves into the cosmic phenomenon of star collisions as the artists leverage their background in engineering and explore mathematical intricacies surrounding the timing and impact of stellar collisions. Through a sonic landscape echoing the vastness of space, this record incorporates elements of white noise, fragmented breaks and minimalist synth arrangements that are said to mirror the mental experiences of the listener.

Review: Say hello once again to an old friend - mid '00s lounge soundtrackers extraordinaire Zero 7 are reissuing their second LP When It Falls. The follow-up to their best-selling "Simple Things", this album found the pair exploring a more psychedelic, funky sound without losing that smooth finish that made their music so massively popular first time round. From the laid back groove of "Passing By" to the brooding soul of the title track, this is the kind of album that goes down easy and sets the perfect mood in the room. The production is second to none, and considering the eye-watering prices the original pressing fetches online, there should be a lot of people happy to see this one back in print.

Review: Hot on the heels of their exceptional new third full-length, 'Cave World', Stockholm's post-punk prodigies, Viagra Boys, have unveiled a deluxe edition of last year's fence swinging sophomore triumph, 'Welfare Jazz'. With big name production help from the likes of Matt Sweeney (whose helmed releases from the likes of Iggy Pop and Queens of the Stone Age), as well as Yves Tumor/Charli XCX collaborator Justin Raisen, the band manage the seemingly impossible feat of combining their jagged edged anthems with a lush, serene approach that has bolstered their profile in the scene immensely. The final full-length to feature guitarist Benjamin Valle before his untimely passing, this expanded edition features seven new tracks, brimming with the unhinged sultry dynamics that continues to make their punk moniker more commonplace with each mention.

Review: Having previously reissued Pasteur Lappe's sought-after 1979 sophomore set, No Man Pass Man, the crew behind the Africa Seven label has turned its attention to the Cameroonian artist's similarly impressive debut, We The People. It's a vibrant and hugely entertaining six-track set, with Lappe offering up a range of dancefloor-ready cuts that variously touch on heavy Afro-disco ("More Sekele Movement (Papa Ni Mama)"), horn-heavy tropical funk ("Dora"), saccharine English language ballads ("Watcha Get Ma Day Dreams"), thrusting disco-funk righteousness (Clav-happy smasher "Sekelimania (Nku Bilam)" and "The Sekele Movement") and laidback, Steely Dan style West Coast jazz-rock ("As Far As I Can Remember").

Review: Amorphous Androgynous are back with something suitably epic in the form of this symphonic, 40-minute prog space-rock concept album, We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal. It is presented as five fantastic parts with the legendary Peter Hammill and Paul Weller both guesting, while the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and a 25-piece live orchestral string section provide the sumptuous sound that makes this most expansive and borderless record sound so meaningful. A cosmic trip of gigantic proportions with all the ups and downs you need to really feel moved, this is the definition of prog lavishness.

The band features former Sarah Records alumni including members of Action Painting! and Secret Shine as well as featuring Even As We Speak. The music they make is pop but with bold adventure at its heart. There are dreamy elements, big bold chords and stunning vocal deliveries as well as a few twists and turns along the way. It's a real gem with nods to sixties psyche amongst others.

Review: Where do you even start with a title like this? To say Hollie Kenniff has set out to try and tear through your emotional brick wall in the sweetest and most gentile way possible is full understatement of the century territory. Following up on her spellbinding 2021 ambient masterpiece, The Quiet Drift, her latest offering to the world almost sounds like a memory even before you know what it's called.

From the outset, these are lush soundscapes that ebb and flow behind and in front of piano keys, suggestions of notes that almost aren't there, with the consistent totem this overwhelmingly rich timbre. The arrangements, often deceptively loose, reflect the work of mind's eye, its ability to recollect but not necessary in 360-degrees, colour, or linear timelines. Tracks such as the aptly titled 'Momentary' introduce refreshingly clear structures of melody, before again vanishing into beautiful walls of brilliant sound.

Professor Creepshow's Wax Cut Loops is a secret prequel to StaxOvWax, and brings 24 joints that fuse funk and soul with all sorts. There are deep Dilla-style sounds as well as more laidback downtempo rollers for a Sunday afternoon and funky, sunny cuts for outdoor BBQs. Each tune has its own authentic vibe and a rich sense of soul that immediately connects despite the eclecticism of the sounds.

It's a grimy mix of dub, industrial, electro, experimental, reggae and electronic sounds with famously abrasive textures. This reissue brings it back to the fore with a great mastering job that demands loud plays and close inspection.

Review: Those renegades at Ilian Tape are back once again with another forward-thinking album of fresh and potent techno, this time from Packed Rich. His long player "depicts the journey of an individual traveling through a field of energy that connects different locations in space," we're told, and along the way, it warps space and time to leave you spellbound. Punchy broken beat drum programming, hyper-real synth lines and cosmic colours all bring this record to life. It's a psychedelic mix that sometimes sounds like an MPC jam amongst the stars, at others like you're in freefall through the cosmos and sometimes laid back, stoned as can be gazing off into the heavens. Lush.

Review: If you've ever fallen for the mythical Lewis album L'Amour, you'll probably get off on this. First thing's first, the two are very, very different records - Lewis' work is so soft and quiet at times it comes close to no longer existing, but the whole thing has this romantic, skin-on-skin by candlelight, whisper-in-ear quality to it that seems to go straight for the heart and make itself a home right there.

Junior Boys' Waiting Game isn't anything like L'Amour in terms of sounds, but that same sense of getting very close and very personal with what you're listening to, a record that's soon to be your lover, pervades everything here. Certainly more in the opening tracks, 'Night Walk''s warm, spring evening in Miami vibe, 'It Never Occurred To Me' and its strange, staccato use of vocoder'd lyrics and gliding refrains. Electro synth for the bedroom, no less.

Review: Mark Van De Maat and Parrish Smith's Volition Immanent project is gaining more and more traction as of late, both for its cadence and aesthetic, but also because it sounds fresher and more explorative than most other bursts of cold-wave available on the market. The duo return to action with an LP for Japanese-French outlet Mind Records, tearing through our charts with sturdy flows of metallic beats, dubbed-out machine-drum funk, and that unmistakable neo-romanticist vibe that represents much of their own output, and that of the mid 1980s. Don't fret, however, because this has plenty of techno in its DNA, too. A recommended album.

Bravo (Adam Mori) saw the release of his first album 'Paradise'. 2022 is the year the genre should make a comeback, after just five years. If such were to be the case, Bravo's second album 'Vizionz' would be the catalyst. Charting collaborations with rapper Def Sound and singer Sally Green, this one points towards only the best detuned sonics, synth bass licks and Miami heat-hazed vizionz.

Review: Wanderwelle & Bandhagens Musikforening's masterful Victory Over The Sun album gets skilfully reinterpreted by some of techno's most forward thinking protagonists. Amsterdam pair Wanderwelle themselves go first with a misty ambient take of 'An Unusual Sunrise' that sets a perfectly dramatic scene. Label boss Sverca serves up one of the highlights with his deep, pulsing hypnotic version of the title track and Anthony Linell sinks us way down below the ocean surface on his meditative dub roller. There is more energy to the busted beats and hidden vocal sounds of Celestial Crusade (E-Saggila remix) and plenty more greatness through the other tracks.

Review: Originally from Rome, Italy, Marco Antonio - the man behind the mask, or the MaSpaventi moniker - relocated to Amsterdam in 2007. A switch from one historic and stunning city to another, in doing so he landed himself smack bang in one of the most vibrant and pro-active electronic music communities and industries on the planet. Suffice to say, then, he's both in the right place and the wrong place to get noticed, with a healthy scene also meaning lots and lots of noise to shout over.
As Vicino Lontano proves, the man in question - who also teaches electronic music production software Ableton alongside other lessons at music schools, including Abbey Road Institute - isn't really up for shouting at all. His work speaks volumes and much louder than most anyway, through sci-fi-hued cosmic dance floor stuff, space age drone, off-centre Italo, and futuristic ambient of the highest possible order.

This one is another various artists affair that starts with some nice futuristic robot disco from Vanity Project. There is more organic and lush Balearic from Bobby Bricks and Pacific Coliseum follows that spine-tingling Ibiza sunset vibe. On the flip side, there is everything from late-night electronic house to lazy disco via Sorcerer's blissed out 'Just For Love' which would entrance any dance floor. Review: It's Lindsey Jordan's second album under the Snail Mail guise. And, just like the namesake service, it's not rushed, at times feels a little unpredictable, and has an air of familiarity that's bound to put listeners at ease. Not that the immediately inviting, often-sweet soft rock instrumentation should be taken at face value. Valentine is an ode to love in a multitude of definitions, but the vast majority of them are in dire need of a little TLC. Not broken, just unkept and taken for granted.

Well, OK, in some instances things are beyond repair - at least one song here is concerned with the horrific feeling of finding out your former-love is now with a current love, which isn't you. On the whole, though, there's a theme of redemption running through the music on this record. That, and the realities of coming of age in the lens of the music and lifestyle press after debut LP Hush exploded before you turned 20.

Review: It had been five years since fans had received any new, original material from Marianne Faithful by the time Vagabond Ways landed, and it's safe to say the record was worth the wait. Containing both her own work, and re-interpretations of songs by the likes of Roger Waters, Elton John, and Leonard Cohen, if the track list is impressive then the delivery is astounding.

Continuing in her neo-cabaret persona, Vagabond Ways is a theatrical and dramatic piece of work to say the least. Packed with emotion and stage presence, to call this rock would be reductive. More a journey into a kind of surreal, experimental pop realm that's filled with mystery, beauty, and unease, this is an excellent example of how a record can invoke incredibly vivid imagery of your own devising.

Words like 'tough' don't really cut it when it comes to stuff like this. Tracks like 'Gabba Masta' might sell some down the wrong path, though - it's heavy and pounding but stops someway short of gabber itself, actually offering some of the most serene harmonies on the record before exploding into its full throttle, stripped back drum-riff-off. And nothing here really lets you off those kind of hooks. But, in a world of nuances, why should they?

Review: It's been a big year for Hospital. Shucks, every year is a big year for London Elektricity's imprint, but 2014 seems especially big with huge albums from the likes of Fred V & Grafix, S.P.Y and now Metrik. Repping his game, the label and the genre at the highest level, Universal Language is a highly accomplished calling card for Metrik that showcases his ability to create barn-storming rave homages ("Make The Floor Burn"), arena-slapping sing-along lighter-raisers ("Human Again", "Infinity"), techy underground rollers ("Slipstream") and unifying cuts that give the legendary Underworld a run for their money ("Resonate"). Maintaining a fine balance of great songwriting, muscular production and straight-up dancefloor abandon, this speaks to every corner, every sub genre and every tiny pocket of D&B. Just as the title suggests.

Review: The Gutifunk & Achilisound Discos label is based in Platja d'Aro on the Costa Brava in Spain. Its mission is to reissue rare and vintage records but they also deal in plenty of fresh new sounds. And that is where Dani Nino's Ogyun Afrobeat project comes in. It has put out two albums before now, one in 2013 and one in 2016, and this third one is the best yet. It is a glowing Afrobeat work doused in jazz and soul goodness with rousing horn work, plenty of busy percussive lines and lush chords. It has been made by a fine collective of artists on ass, keys, sax, flutes, piccolos and plenty more and is a truly life-affirming listen.

Review: This album has been described as 15 self-portraits by Sebi Tramontana. They vary hugely in length from 30 seconds to around nine minutes and all heavily feature the trombone. It is taken in myriad different directions with plenty of improvisational techniques and some subtle nods to Duke Ellington's trombone masters. It makes for an involving journey of light and dark that makes direct reference to the brass bible 'Song and Wind' by Arnold Jacobs, who is chief tuba player with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Review: Jacidorex is a techno producer who has been active on the scene since the mid-noughties and known for his signature acid-infused sound. He has released numerous EPs and albums over the years on various labels including Acid Night, Obs.Cur, and Smashead Records and is back with another album - UNFACED01. This one sees the Belgian DJ/producer pushing the boundaries of the genre even further, with his signature brand of dynamic hypnotic acid patterns. It begins with a cinematic introduction before opening into a hip-hop track, which then swiftly transitions into electro, industrial and trance influences throughout.

Review: Royal Blood have had two UK number one albums, have sold over two million copies ad picks du pa global and critical fan base. They managed to blow all expectations out of the water last year with their 'Trouble's Coming' release and now the new album does it again. It has big riffs from Mike Kerr, vocals that range from raw and rock ready to more tender and soulful and grooves that can be hyper aggressive or more comforting. It's a real roller coaster ride that finishes with a rather surprising piano ballad. But then again, what would a Royal Blood record be without a surprise.

Review: Miss Kittin and The Hacker go together like cheese and biscuits. They have a long history of crafted always edgy electro and electrical sounds and this latest album is the latest chapter in their on going story. It is the second release on Nobody's Business and bristles with attitude. 'The Womb' is all warped bass and caustic textures with Kittin's sleazy vocals. '1000 Dreams' is more elastic and driven by rubbery bass and 'Suspicious Mind' explores a bright, cosmic and melodic world of throwback 80s sounds with Kittin in a more pop vocal mould as she covers the iconic track of the same name.

Review: Kicking off his new R&R imprint, LA-born and Berlin-based producer Huerta brings us TV Slang - an LP which exists somewhere between rhythmic and ambient house. For the title track, woozy voice samples drift in and out of focus, existing in a space just outside of reality. 'Stutter Dub' emerges as one of the more dance-geared tracks, yet it's still decorated with the hazy sound design of the release's ambient numbers; its buffed-out environment softening the edges of Huerta's percussion. On the B-side, 'Traces' features dreamily reverberating piano chords embellished with glittering breaks. This is a highly multi-faceted release which promises to take listeners and dancers alike into a beautifully realised soundworld.
