Come Around & Love Me (3:04)
What Is Left To Do (3:56)
Review: Jalen Ngonda shares two 7"-incarnated selections from his debut album Come Around and Love Me. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today's soul scene. His voice, equal parts raw feeling and elegance, exudes confidence and charm - disarming packed rooms of rowdy concert-goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung. For his studio project, however, Ngonda and his team at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn developed skulful blends, heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with a Motown sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment. Ngonda creates a classic approach that is rooted in the sounds of revered pioneers, without falling into imitation; most symptomatic of this is the beautiful cinematic soul echoer 'What Is Left To Do', a song sure to dazzle for years to come.

Review: ** RANDOMER REPRESS ** Rohan of Randomer's return to the Hemlock label is heralded with Bring/Curtains, a club ready 12" described amusingly as "two iceberg sized hunks of pure stereo freeze". Randomer's been relatively busy this year, issuing a Surgeon approved white label and inaugurating Turbo's Sex Tags aping Warehouse series but it's great to see him back on Untold's Hemlock label for whom Randomer's done some of his best work. "Bring" will be familiar to those who regularly listen to Hessle Audio's Rinse FM show, first making a recorded appearance way back in May, demonstrates an icier, slightly deranged side to Randomer that's not been seen before. Accompanying it is "Curtains" which is blessed with the following wonderful description from the Hemlock press office; "A slo-mo steppers cut that's darker and sparser than George Osborne's mailbox on Valentines. Cold."

Review: Thee Sacred Souls made a big splash with their lovely debut album last year after a great run of singles. They came on the Penrose label in Spain and that is where they return now with a new limited 7". 'Running Away' opens up in frantic but soul fuelled fashion with quick and slick drums and gorgeous vocal falsettos up top. Things slow down and take a sentimental turn on the flip with 'Love Comes Easy', featuring aching vocal yearns and expressive sax lines heightening the mood. Review: Lady Wray's Piece of Me is a second sizzling album of superb soul. It marked something of a homecoming for the artist as she debuted on this label back in 2016 and found her leaning towards her usual soul and r&b as well as more hip-hop influences than ever: classic boom-bap drums and chunky bass hist loud and proud and for that reason the originals are ripe for remixing as they are here. Two legends of the game in Pete Rock and Ghostface Killah step up and bring their own signature sound and dusty drum beats to make for a crucial little 7".

The Sorcerers - "In Pursuit Of Shai Hulud" (3:41)
The Yorkshire Film & Television Orchestra - "The Anderson Spectrum" (3:00)
Review: The Sorcerers have been a mainstay of the ATA Records imprint since it was founded in their home city of Leeds back in 2015. Here, the Yorkshire combo, whose primary influences have always been Ethopian "Ethio-jazz" and obscure European horror soundtracks, return to action with a heavyweight dancefloor workout. In truth "In Search of Sha Hulud" is a far more funk-fuelled affair than you might expect, with exoitic Middle Eastern melodies and fluttering flute solos rising above killer drum breaks and a seriously heavy bassline. Turn to the flipside for "The Anderson Spectrum", a pitched-down, 1960s style library funk jam credited to The Yorkshire Film and Television Orchestra, which appears to be another project helmed by leading members of the Sorcerers.

Review: Here comes a meltingly powerful 7" split single by Monophonics and Kelly Finnigan, a psychedelic soul band and a singer from California respectively. Monophonics' contribution is a classic: 'Love You Better', a catchy, soulful belter concerning a formerly broken relationship, and the sacrifices it takes to pick up the pieces. The flipside, meanwhile, is a newer one from Finnigan; 'The Shape Of My Teardrops', which reckons with grief in the form of a surreal, rimshotting slow jam.

Review: Colemine sublabel Karma Chief continues to be an essential destination for anyone seeking soul music which reaches past the classic approaches to try doing things differently. That’s exactly what you get on this new single from Say She She, the NYC group bringing an urgent flair to party starters and slow jams alike. ‘Reeling’ is a heady groover which speaks to the Big Apple’s versatile, funky legacy of mutant anthems with a very human warmth at their core. ‘Don’t You Dare Stop’ smooths out the situation on the flip with a gorgeous, downtempo roller centred on some celestial harmonising and a honey-coated production you could just bathe in.

It features two tunes taken from his masterful new album, the first being 'Oyasumi, Ohayo' where subtle synths ripple beneath Balearic leads. Review: For his latest outing on the Good Timin' imprint he set up some years back, Jex Opolis is joined by Ian D Knight. The St Louis-based performance artist notably makes his presence felt on "Look At My Car", delivering a vocal inspired by "consumerism and rampant motorism" over the NYC producer's superb, Padlock-inspired, boogie-dub groove. The Compass Point influence also comes to the fore on closer "Guitar Sands", where intertwining guitar and synthesizer motifs stretch out across a Larry Levan-friendly backing track. The EP's other cut, "Rimini Nite", successfully pays tribute to the halcyon days of Italo-disco. It's every bit as thrilling as the rest of this superb 12".

Mr Bassie Special! (4:10)
Review: Astonishingly, this slice of Melodica-sporting dub reggae perfection was first issued in the UK by Rough Trade at the tail end of the 1970s and has been a favourite of the label's founder, Geoff Travis, ever since. Its Augustus Pablo's take on Horace Andy's 'Mr Bassie', which itself is based on a popular 'riddim' from 1972. On the A-side you'll find 'Pablo Meets Mr Bassie', where the Melodica master's effortless solos ride a deliciously dubbed-out 'Rockers All Stars' take on the track. You'll find that version - further dubbed out, and with occasional snatches of Pablo's contributions echoing across the sound space - over on side B. A classic chunk of dub reggae whose surprise role in the story of Rough Trade Records (it was the label's second release, fact fans) makes it particularly notable.

Review: Say She She are emergent stars of the NYC scene, pooling considerable talents from various parts of the world into a brew which feels wholly appropriate for the Big Apple. Upholding the open-hearted values of the downtown scene, they turn their hand to dexterous disco-not-disco get-down on ‘Reeling’ without ever sounding referential. Meanwhile on the flip they sink down into a more sultry mood, riding dusty, delicate drums and radiant Rhodes as a vehicle for some unreal vocal harmonies and a sound so cosy you could wrap it around you to stave off the winter.

Review: We're asked to Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space Of All Possibilities. But the twist is, this plane of existence we somehow find ourselves in already is. Such is the overarching fable at the heart of James Holden's new album. The esteemed electronic musician and DJ knows as much, and is quoted to have said 'I want this to be my most open record, uncynical, naive, unguarded, the record teenage me wanted to make'. So, a high dimensional space of all possibilities can be found within us, right where we started - not some other dimension or higher plane of consciousness. All this is conveyed pretty neatly through Holden's crushed bitscapes, future techno ambientrancers, and exploration of revolutionary themes. Like exploring a bountiful rainforest full of bohemians and mushrooms, longtime fans and newcomers alike are sure to be delighted.

Review: Yet another addition to the pile of new music from a Penrose soul singer who has been active since the mid 1970s and has not stopped since, Lee Fields' latest 7" single 'Waiting On The Sidelines' is a paean to pining, a song for sad hollowness. The star sings heartbreakingly of having been reduced to 'waiting on the sidelines' while the object of his affection goes off gallivanting with someone else. It's a beautiful new one from the singer-songwriter and producer, effortlessly showing off his undying penchant for the 7"s format and neatly following up his 2022 album Sentimental Fool.

Review: The idea that everyone's favourite modern-day TikTok button-masher and producer extraordinaire, Fred Again, would team up with historic ambient music titan Brian Eno was anyone's guess. Surprisingly, though, Brian Eno was a childhood neighbour of Fred's - of course, similar experiences beget similar creative expression. We also suppose just about anything can happen when you fall in with Kieran Hebden aka. Four Tet, who runs the label that houses this brand new record from the pair, Text Records. This surprise LP is sure to be mobbed with massive fan demand - not least due to the unlikely pairing, but also because it's gorgeous. Fred Again's pop-samplework is reworked into an entirely different context than his usual banger experiments; cuts like 'Radio' instead recall the rough heavenly-textural work of underground ambient artists on Soundcloud, with its phone-liney vocals equally reminding us of the heartfelt understatedness of tracks like Yves Tumor's 'Limerence'. Brian Eno, meanwhile, outdoes himself on the album's start-stoppy, but no less evocative structure, complementing Fred's vocal-sample-centric approach extremely well. Deeper listens confirm the heart-tugging theme: the hidden aspects of human relationships - intimacy, vulnerability, and trust.

Front to back, the record retains a healthy balance between the invention of new sounds and the sticking to strengths. Reunited with long-time collaborators John Parish and Flood, Harvey delivers alluring, at times otherworldly songs - delivered beautifully and with more than a hint of world-weary emotions - backed by sparse, effects-laden instrumentation, metronomic grooves and plenty of pastoral, folk-influenced intent. We've not listened to the lyrics intently enough (yet) to adequately discuss their themes, but in advance Harvey's label promised "biblical images and references to Shakespeare" amongst the introspection and hard-worn commentary.

Frontman and LA native, Kelly Finnigan is the conductor of this train taking the listener through a journey of Bay-area psych guitars, 60s soul trumpets and Motown influences sprinkled here and there, printed on a limited swirled 7" disc. Side B's 'Crash & Burn' is the mellow ballad that succeeds Side A's 'Warpaint', originally the ninth track on the ten-track LP. A sombre, wistful track that sees Finnigan's keyboard skills on full display, the psychedelic elements taking over, having an element of St Vincent's groovy 2021 album 'Daddy's Home' in its warbling synths and hippie-esque percussion. You don't know whether you want to cry to it or get high to it, or both.

Review: Astonishingly, almost 14 years have passed since the release of Everything But The Girl's previous - and many assumed final - album, 'Temperamental'. Since then, husband-and-wife team Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn have delivered plenty of solo music rooted in deep house, nu-disco and contemporary synth-pop, and it is those sounds - along with nods to their acoustic past - that dominate Fuse, their surprise new album. While the set undoubtedly feels fresh and contemporary, the key ingredients that made their music so alluring - not least Thorn's distinctive, world-weary lead vocals and introspective lyrics - remain front and centre. The results are uniformly impressive, with highlights including the slow-motion, piano-laden r&b-pop of 'Run a Red Light', the sub-heavy, garage-influenced brilliance of 'Nothing Left To Lose' and the glossy IDM-pop shimmer of 'No One Knows We're Dancing'.

Back To Nature (4:06)
Review: Motor City mainstay and former Slum Village associate DJ Dez Andres has many skills up his sleeve from mad scratching to vibrant Latin flavour mixes that draw on his Cuban heritage via dusty house rollers and deep hip-hop gems. Here he mixes all that up on a new EP for Beretta Music that is now available on purple vinyl. His sunny and delightful melodies are present and correct in each cut, as are his signature slouchy and hip-hop-inspired drums. All four of the tunes hit the sweet spot but the funky boucle of 'Back To Nature' is one that really stands out here.

Why Do I Love You (Red Greg radio edit)
Why Do I Love You (instrumental radio edit)
Review: Here comes Red Greg with a joyous edit from his coffers, presented on the run of Magic Touch reissues currently surfacing on Numero. Magic Touch was a cult label in Chicago which carried some incredible, rare tracks from the city and nearby up until 1984. The finest of these have been out of reach of the average Joe for a long time, and finally now cuts like Andy Brown's swooning, string-laden disco stomper 'Why Do I Love You' are getting back out there. For this particular release Greg was called on to offer his edit services and of course he does right by the original, bringing the best out of the track to ensure it lands the best it can when you take it for a spin.

Gimme The Grease (2:43)
I Want You (Any Way I Can) (2:20)
Review: Jim Jones (not that Jim Jones, but if your finger's on the pulse, then yes, that Jim Jones) makes a a whopping return with his new 7" 'Gimme The Grease'. A Memphis-via-London hard rock n' roll stonker, this one's a self-proclaimed ode to "getting over/getting it easy/getting it". Whatever that means, we're not sure, but the song is a figurative statement to match, as Jones sings relentlessly of prevailing against the odds despite life's grind, while staying staunchly backed up by rollincking drums, shimmying shakers and honking horn sections. Forwarding the upcoming album Ain' No Peril, it's a fantastic prototype for an upcoming album with an inevitable Mississippean rock stench, sure to sate anyone with even so much of a hint of keenness for the sound.

Review: The self-titled comeback LP from Reading based shoegaze pioneers Slowdive proved one of the most mercurial and delicate dream-pop projects of 2017, while owing testament to their singular, highly influential vision. While a follow up has been teased since 2020, lockdown delays as well as personal loss has hindered the work to the point of monolithic proportions. Promising a more introspective, minimal electronic based backdrop in order to process the passing of both vocalist/guitarist Rachel Goswell's mother and drummer Simon Scott's father, Everything Is Alive serves as a muted, nuanced return to form, from a collective of artists still driven by their passion, ability and endlessly attentive focus to their ethereal craft.

Review: Durand Jones & The Indications' third LP, Too Many Tears keeps on offering up superb singles and after the latest back in November, we now get this new one 'Ride or Die.' This band is a regular on the Colemine label and they do it all from slow motion seductiveness to blue eyed soul and sophisticated lounge pop. This time we get lovely harmonies and breezy soul on 'Ride Or Die' with its lead falsetto set to melt anyone's heart. The flip, things take a tender turn with more vulnerable vocals and gently rhythms that come alive with serene strings, gentle tambourines and neat basslines.

Utan Rymddrakt Pa Uranus (Gary The Tall re-edit) (5:10)
Review: Independent radio institution NTS has a lot to answer for. Not least introducing its legions of loyal listeners across the world to the mighty (or, perhaps more appropriately, curious Staalfagel). The result of some serious crate digging, as per usual for the platform, the Swedish post punk and New Wave outfit - Erik Fritjofsson, Petter Brundell and Micke Kjell - reflect how broad the digital station's music policy can be, and how important it is for things to be rediscovered and saved from obscurity.
Forming in 1980, the three piece only released two full length records in their time, alongside a handful of singles and EPs. Utan Rymddrakt Pa Uranus is among the most enigmatic and delightful, here presented in two parts with an edit by Gary The Tall. As early adopters of synths and drum machines, the cosmic dance-pop sound here might be rudimentary today, but also has this real sense of adventure and breaking new ground about it.

Prisoner Of My Weakness (Waxist mix)
Review: While it's hardly a holy grail release, Billy Evans' 1985 debut single is one of those rare and hard-to-find jazz funk-meets-boogie jams that merits a reissue. The admirable Kalita Records have happily stepped up to the plate and delivered. We got both versions from the original 12": the cheery, synth bassline-powered dancefloor soulfulness of Evans and arranger Al Walters' original mix, and the pair's more thickset, club-ready Dub Mix, which in typical 1980s disco dubs style includes some fine breakdowns and groove-based sections. Dusty-fingered digger Waxist also provides a freshly re-edited take. He stretches out the groove, focusing on the synth-bass, drums, guitars and horns, before dropping in Evans' inspired lead vocal.

Review: If you're looking for a soulful slow-jam with a powerful message, look no further than Durand Jones & The Indications' 'Power To The People'. This 7" contains a powerful, warm, synth-heavy anthem that celebrates the spirit of resistance and collective solidarity; a reminder of a force we have lost sight of in the modern individualist era. Durand Jones & The Indications are the rabble-rousers in question: the Bloomington, Indiana band mix soul and r&b for a convincing take on the nascent soul revival here.

Review: The first entry in Numero's Margo Guryan series arrives as a limited edition pic sleeve 45. Side A features the previously unreleased 1966 ye-ye inspired burner 'I Ought To Stay Away From You', paired with her latter-day viral smash 'Why Do I Cry'. The American singer-songwriter's breathy ahhs and lackadaisical delivery is on full display here, making for a notable contrast with the songs' needy tone of voice. Pleasing baroque pop backings, tempered by chirrupy flute and skipping drums, make for an equally surreal effect.

Review: The 1990s was arguably the first 'golden age' of ambient - a time when the inherently atmospheric and laidback style not only exploded in popularity, but also became the post-club soundtrack of choice for a whole generation. This personal survey of the 90s ambient scene from journalist and author Jon Savage does a good job in gathering together a representative selection of genuine gems and overlooked classics, drifting between the bubbly, deep space brilliance of Richard H Kirk's Sandoz project ('Limbo'), bleeping ambient house ('Calm' by 2 Cabbages on a Drip), early progressive house (React 2 Rhythm), electronic psychedelia (the tabla rhythms and swirly noises of Rapoon), ambient blues (Underworld), IDM (U-ziq), and glacial, slow-motion bliss (Biosphere).

Review: Seth Applebaum's NTC outfit Ghost Walk Orchestra originally released 'Brownout' on the Night Walker tape in 2016, distilling their hazy, psych-leaning funk sound into a perfect two-minute groove that shows off the band at their best. Now Karma Chief have pulled the track out of cassette obscurity and given it a pressing as a 7", backed up by 'Boneyard Baile' released the same year as a digi-only drop. If you love a moody funk jam played with finesse by a crack team, this record is a must.
