Review: A Morgan doesn't release often but when he does it's worth checking in. He's landed previously on Voight, New Rhythmic and Canticle but here debuts on the fledgling Blackaxon's seventh EP. 'Lizard King' is a full fat techno cut with tribal funk and wet synths all demanding you march along. 'New Dawn' keeps up the pace with more firmly rooted drums and ticking hi hats up top next to daubs of synth menace. Things take a dark, distorted and twisted turn on 'The Way It Feels' which is the most dense of the lot while 'Jupiter Moon' heads off on a cosmic tip - cavernous deep space atmospheres driven by unrelenting drums.

Review: A defiant rhythmic funk odyssey for those needing a little sonic boost before overcoming life's struggles and challenges, 'We're Gonna Make It' is a neat slice of understanding, optimism and determination. Recorded by New World, an American soul group active throughout the 70s, the song is emblematic of the sunniest facets of soul and funk, backed by a hand-drummed skeleton and falsetto'd vocal refrains. Review: Soul Brother home in on a rare gem from Mojoba, 'Say You Will', a paean for intra-relationship commitment in the mode of soul. Recorded in the mid-to-late 1970s as a B-side for the then already wildly succesful 'I Know', 'Say You Will' was an unpredicted sleeper hit, perhaps owing to its high-slung vocals and deft unisons between guitar backings and impeccable drum swangs. A comparatively funky Southern soul number, its Sam & Dave-style harmonies oscillate away, to an endearing extent.

'Step Inside My World' by The Reason Why - an incredibly obscure band releasing with Polydor originally in 1977 - is an excellent modern soul mid-tempo dancer, having remained in hot demand for many years thanks to its sensitive recording and lyrical matter. With original issue copies having reportedly sold for roughly L700, we can only affirm that the two songs on the record amount to no less than sonic blessings, spanning keen emotivity and string-laden passion.

Review: Dance Trax deals in just that - tracks to dance to. This 60th such outing is a no-nonsense four-track assault on the club from the joint forces of Viikatory and Manao. 'ID' opens up with high speed and clipped techno funk and plenty of rattling synth sounds. 'Track 8' is no less punishing with loopy breaks and thudding bass combining to superb post-jungle effect. The weighty and compelling rhythms of 'Full Ranger' and the light-footed but twisted bass energy of 'The Future' close out the flipside with another pair of timeless and physical gems.

Casual Treatment is behind this latest blistering offering and opener 'Think Of Me' is wired up with all manner of slivers of electronic synth work, dripping taps and razor sharp hi-hats sounds that scratch at the driving techno drums. Next up, VIL remixes with a high speed rhythm and groaning sound designs that are freaky as you like. On the flip is the Detroit style techno workout of 'Miles Away' while also comes as a shuffled, perfectly reduced banger courtesy of a Cravo remix.

Review: Isle Of Jura come through once more with a superbly in demand reissue of a sought after disco cut from the 1980s. 'Save Our Love' by Escape From New York is a blend of disco, new wave and funk that has a mystical atmosphere and drums perfectly of their time. The vocal is full of yearning under the shimmering synths and on the flip is an even more 80s-leaning tune, 'Slow Beat' (dance mix) has more obvious 80s leanings and the 12" closes with the Instrumental of 'Save Our Love, stripping back the vocals and giving more air to the bass.

Review: When tasked with compiling his first After Dark compilation for eight years, musical font-of-all-knowledge Bill Brewster decided to go "slow and low", picking an impressively eclectic collection of low-tempo outings old and new. The results are undeniably impressive, with Brewster serving up an entertaining and eye-opening mixture of twinkling, jazz-flecked electronica (T.O.E), synth-laden proto-Balearic dreaminess (Island Band), Weatherall-esque dark disco psychedelia (Brewster's Hotel Motel project remixing Jeb Loy Nichols), squelchy nu-disco deepness (Ray Mang dubbing out Khruangbin), acid-flecked revivalist proto-house (Rhythm Plate), little-known, 80s soul era synth-pop (Debbie & The Code), future Balearic anthems (Nail re-editing Gilbert O'Sullivan), saucer-eyed, piano-sporting space house (Gus Patterson) and ultra-deep electro (Carl Finlow). As usual, Brewster has largely avoided familiar favourites, instead showcasing obscurities that deserve wider attention.

Review: Len Faki used the lockdowns to reconnect with production, hone his skills and tap deeper into his influences. The result was an adventurous long player, Fusion, that he has released over the course of a few EPs on his own Figure label. This is the third and final installment and it opens with 'Halide', a broken beat wobbler with plenty of percussive flair and slow-burning tension. 'Make Me Scream' has a throwback 80s synth feel with gothic vocals and then on the flip side he offers up more of the sort of potent peak time techno he is known for with 'Tor 8.' Last up is the cosmic melodic style of 'Astra' to conclude what has been a great project.

Review: Farewell to Midnight by Eric Hilton is the latest of his many collaborative outings with Puma Ptah. The man known as 'the godfather of downtempo electronics' is in fine form here with contemporary roots reggae sounds drenched in soul on the Montserrat House label. The A-side is deep and drips with watery effects and rolling percussion over fat bottom ends as Puma's vocal musing bring the soul. Flip it over and things pick up with 'Front Line' which is a more buying dub groove with turning toms and organic perc next to nice melodic leads.

Review: .While Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento and American saxophonist Sam Gendel first met and played together at the dawn of the last decade - at a Los Angeles cafe both used to frequent, fact fans - it was only last year that they decided to collaborate on a release. The Room, the resultant album, was reportedly recorded in two days in a studio in the Californian countryside. It's an undeniably magical and sun-soaked affair, with Gendel teasing fluttering, flute-esque improvisations from his soprano saxophone while Do Nascimento delivers impeccable, finger-picking meditations on his seven-string acoustic guitar. The latter is undoubtedly a virtuoso with his own distinct style - a Brazilian take on classical guitar, incorporating nods to lesser-known regional music - but instinctively knows when to step back and allow Gendel the limelight. Impressive stuff all told.
