Review: While you'll find plenty of experienced composers and producers on A Strangely Isolated Place's quietly impressive roster of artists, the Californian label is also excellent at showcasing new talents. They're at it again here, offering up a debut from previously unheard Sardinian artist Blinkar Fran Norr. The eight tracks tend towards the more becalmed, meditative and immersive end of the ambient spectrum, with Norr prioritizing swelling, stretched-out chords, hushed aural textures, atmospheric field recordings, ghostly strings and unearthly instrumental sounds that invite you in for dinner and then persuade you to stay for the weekend. It's beautiful and beguiling, for sure, but also touched with a hint of sadness. As debuts go, it's really rather impressive.

Review: Last Night On Earth's latest release is something rather special: a fresh set of dancefloor dubs of catalogue tracks by prolific producer, remixer and friend of the family Deadbeat. His interpretations are largely loopy, hazy, hypnotic and trippy, joining the dots between traditional dub techno and a more bass-heavy, out-of-this-world version of 21st century tech-house. Perhaps the most eye and ear-catching track is "Float Collapse Dub" - a version of a previously unreleased Sasha cut - but the ethereal and otherworldly dubs of tracks by Ejeca, Alex Niggemann, Hunter/Game and John Gurd - a dreamy and picturesque affair - are also especially good.

Review: Guidance Is Internal 3 is the third and final instalment of a three part compilation series that has pulled together the best music from Callisto's golden period on legendary Chicago label Guidance Recordings. Everything you would expect of a real visionary is here - depth, spirituality and cosmic vibes aplenty. Super sweet kick drums that just keep on pulling you in define the opener, while things are cast more free on the intergalactic "Basic Lytes." "Ambent II" sounds like an early Omar S tune and "Meta" is gorgeously dreamy. House doesn't get any better.

Review: Dutch producer Samuel Van Dijk has operated under numerous aliases over the years, though he's undoubtedly best known for his IDM and electro work as VC-118A. Those with an in-depth knowledge of his work will tell you that there's also some treasure buried within Van Dijk's outings as Multicast Dynamics, a project rooted in the blurred boundaries between ambient, music concrete and sound design. "Ancient Circuits", his latest album under the alias, is also his most expansive to date: a hundred-minute journey in four 25-minute chapters designed to tell a slowly-shifting journey that's at times blissful, otherworldly, dark, foreboding, intoxicating and intense, all crafted from epic studio experiments with synthesizers, samplers, effects units and a vast array of field recordings. Like much of the Astral Industries catalogue, it's superb.

Review: Kevin Parker is a real enigma of a musician. The brains behind the rightly celebrated and ever-surprising Tame Impala, he's never one for delivering quite what you expect, while still understanding that one of the most important things in music is striking a balance between the familiarity disciples need, and the expressive exploration that can prick the ears of the previously uninitiated.

Album number four, "The Slow Rush", certainly adopts a different outlook to previous undertakings. It also more than lives up to its name. It's smooth, tripped out (perhaps not so surprising on the latter front) and strikingly void of those highs that seem to offer the aural equivalent to some opiate-amphetamine blend. But we don't miss out. Instead, we're given permutations of soul, prog rock and acid house, perhaps making for the most expansive record this guy has been responsible for.

Review: The world has found itself in a significant hurry. We have also found ourselves in the most distracted period of time in history; finding it tremendously difficult to remain in a moment of stillness, quietude, or allow time for self-reflection. Conversely, our vast universe continues its expansion into infinite development; a climate of deafening silence in a boundless four-dimensional continuum. It remains mesmerizing with a quiet allure that freely suspends in space-time; a true account of the beautiful unknown that sparks hope, reverence, and an awesome realization of impenetrable mystery.

"Stasis Sounds For Long-Distance Space Travel" is audibly rich in its delivery with an array of tranquil billows and patient tones. It is a journey and soundtrack that commences at Earth's thermosphere, gently moving towards the untraveled parts of space, lushly floating on forever.

These arrangements represent a group of celestial transmissions that are delicate in nature and intended for the listener to embrace moments of stillness, quietude and reflection, of which are on a trajectory of extinction at a place we call Earth.

Review: Under the E.R.P. alias, Gerard Hanson has been making some of the finest intergalactic electro known to humankind since the tail end of the 1990s. His catalogue is meaty and some of his older, out-of-press records are now frustratingly hard to find - hence this tidy double-pack from Frustrated Funk. It includes all three tracks from Hanson's 2007 label debut, "Vox Automaton" - the body-popping brilliance of the title track, the Drexciya style underwater trip of "Nerve Play" and the deep electro lusciousness of "Parfume Persuasion" - as well as the trio of cuts originally released on the "Alsoran" from the same years. These are arguably even better, with the melodious, cinematic and futuristic title track, and wonderfully poignant "Irma" standing out. Exceptional.

Review: Is there a more on-point modern jazz label than Chicago's International Anthem? The imprint has a knack of releasing far-sighted music that goes way beyond standard jazz, offering up spiritual and experimental fusions fully in-keeping with the genre's genre-defying roots. This solo set from Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker - his second for International Anthem following 2016's "The New Breed" - is a superb example. Breathlessly eclectic in the most inspiring of ways, it sees Parker combine virtuoso jazz guitar solos and mangled, guitar-powered aural textures with all manner of live and sampled sounds to create a dizzyingly good album that variously touches on soul-jazz, post-rock, free improvisation, Terry Riley style minimalist soundscapes, ambient, jazz-funk and much more besides. In a word: brilliant.

Review: It might not be quite as groundbreaking as Dangermouse's "The Grey Album", which expertly blended elements of The Beatles "The White Album" with Jay-Z acapellas, but Amerigo Gazzaway's fusion of James Brown and the Notorious B.I.G is equally as impressive in its own way. His blends of Brown breaks, vocal snippets and instrument samples with hip-hop beats and Biggie Smalls acapellas are uniformly brilliant, expertly crafted, imaginative and undeniably dancefloor-friendly. It's the sort of album that you didn't think that you needed but really do; certainly, any of the 11 tracks will get a rapturous response when unleashed on dancefloors.

Review: One of the pleasing by-products of the recent electro revival has been the return of Aux 88, a legendary Detroit quartet whose armour plated, bass heavy take on the style made them one of Michigan's finest musical exports in the 1990s. "Counterparts", their first new album in ten years, is therefore big news. After opening with their warm, funk-fuelled take on Motor City techno - the sci-fi brilliance of "Intel" - the four-piece rushes through a range of killer, club-friendly electro jams in their trademark style (tough drums, funky bass, vocoder vocals). Highlights include the moody "My Electro Visions", the foreboding "Stereolized", the ghetto-tech influenced "Pothole Paradise" and the far-sighted, Cybotron-meets-Kraftwerk style goodness of "Electro In Key of Funk".

He was particularly active in the late 90s and early 2000s, when he released a wealth of material on Guidance Recordings. "Guidance Is Internal: Part 1" gathers together some of his finest moments for the legendary imprint, sashaying between the bass-heavy, ultra-deep hypnotism of "Breezin'", the slick, tech-tinged warmth of "The Power", the US garage-influenced late night skip of "Never Again", the dub/spaced out drum and bass bliss of "Junkle" and the effortlessly soulful, New Jersey style headiness of "Need Ur Love".

As part of their celebrations they'll be reissuing some key singles and albums from their catalogue, starting with this 1991 compilation of key Derrick May productions. Now stretched across two slabs of wax rather than one to guarantee a louder cut, "Innovator" contains a wealth of vital early Motor City techno classics, from the acid-powered insanity of "Nude Photo" and the rushing, piano-heavy rush of "Strings of Life", to the thrilling sci-fi futurism of "Wiggin" and the deep techno warmth of "Hand Over Hand".

Review: In the summer of 2018, Strut offered up a compilation that mined the extensive back catalogue of Disques Debs International, a Guadeloupe-based label that showcased the finest music to come out of the French-speaking Caribbean between 1950 and 2000. While that set focused on material released between 1960 and '72, this belated sequel showcases cuts featured on Henri Debs' legendary imprint between 1973 and '81. The musical palette is therefore even brighter, breezier and more sun-kissed, offering up cuts that touch on mambo, rumba, Zouk, tropical disco, reggae and the kind of cross-cultural fusions that belie easy categorization. As you'd expect from Strut, the selections are spot on and the re-mastered sound superb. In other words, it's another must-have release from Quinton Scott's imprint.

Review: Berlin retroverts Childhood Intelligence are back, following up some great releases by similarly retro influenced producers like Darren Nye, Station Rose and Dan Piu - and it's a past alias of the latter that gets a reboot for the first time in 19 years - Nightstalker. "Tragedies Of A High Tech World" features classic Drexciyan sound aesthetics, similarly wrapped up in themes of technology, social programming, controlled societies and mystical planets in deep outer space. The tracks speak for themselves: "Ain't No Dark For Brainscan" serves up some bass heavy alien funk, the evocative four-to-the-floor action of "Artificial Excitement" treads a path akin to American producer The Abstract Eye, while the mesmerising sci-fi fantasy of "Stop Clock The Realm Of Private Enterprise" features the same backdrop. Dystopian themes are also somewhat mandatory on an electro full-length, and rest assured these are catered for on the sombre "Small Talk Monsters".

More impressively, it brought together some of Brazil's finest musicians including Azymuth (who were responsible for laying down the backing tracks) and Marcos Valle. Here reissued for the first time, it offers a glorious blend of string-drenched arrangements, jazz-funk, samba and jazz-fired backing tracks, spacey early synthesizer sounds, twinkling pianos and sweet female vocals guaranteed to make your flight across Brazil pass by in a loved-up blur. It's infinitely superior to almost all contemporary in-flight entertainment options and - more surprisingly - of far greater musical quality than you'd expect from what was effectively a marketing exercise.

There's plenty to set the pulse racing on this first volume, from the stab-heavy, rave-era filth of CLS's "Can You Feel It (In House Dub)" and the wild acid insanity of Wink's "Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin Acid Funk)", to the bouncy, mid-to-late-90s US garage chunkiness of Groove Patrol's "Need Your Love", Hardrive's "Deep Inside" and the organ-heavy sweatiness of George Morel's "Let's Groove".

Review: Since being touted as jazz's next big thing back in 2014, Moses Boyd has released very little music, though the few EPs he has put out have been uniformly superb. We'd expect plenty of hype around this debut album, but we can assure you it will be deserved. Boyd is a drummer by trade and it's the variety and quality of the rhythms - some framed by traditional jazz, others hip-hop, grime, dubstep, dancehall and Tony Allen style Afrobeat grooves - that really stand out, despite the presence of fuzzy, Fela Kuti style horn motifs, booming basslines, Juju guitar solos, liquid jazz-funk flourishes, dark trip-hop tropes and some suitably inspiring vocals. Boyd may have taken his time, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Review: Over the years Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer has heard a lot of incredible music, so when he says that La Rombe is the best singer/songwriter he's heard we sit up and take notice. To prove his point, Fryer has trawled through the Philadelphia musician's archive of recordings (it stretches back to 1979) and put together this essential retrospective. There's much to admire throughout, with the assembled cuts mostly mining the overlooked artist's soul, disco and 1980s rhythm and blues work. We'd highlight individual tracks for praise, but such is the quality throughout that naming favourites seems pointless. Take our advice: grab a copy while you can.

Review: Strictly Rhythm's 30th anniversary series of "Best Of" double-packs should be an essential purchase for all those looking to grab some high-grade U.S house from the 1990s and 2000s. As you'd expect, there's some genuine peak-time gold to be found on this second salvo in the series. After beginning with the bumping U.S garage richness of Barbara Tucker's gospel-flecked "Beautiful People", the set variously touches on glitchy deep house goodness (DJ T re-editing the "Full Effect" mix of Essence's "Moments In House"), stomping and muscular deep house (DJ Sneak), jazz-funk inspired house dreaminess (the original version of Wamdue's "King of My Castle") and ambidextrous dancefloor sweatiness (the Kenny Dope style breakbeats, heavy bass and woozy pads of Soul Fusion's "Basstone (Underground Network Mix)".

Review: Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Rainer Trueby compiled (or helped to compile) a string of Brazilian-focused compilations for his friends at Compost Records. It's perhaps surprising, then, that it's taken this long for him to get a chance to showcase some gems from his record collection. "Soulgliding" is as smooth, warm and glassy-eyed as you'd expect, with the German DJ/producer serving up a range of mostly obscure jazz-funk, soul-jazz, boogie and slow jam gems. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the sparse-but-rich synth-soul of Patrice Rushen's "To Each His Own" and the sun-kissed shuffle of Bridge's "Next To Me", to the saccharine sweetness of Crystal Winds' "Lovers Holiday" and the low-slung jazz-funk bounce of "Memories Of Moments" by Demo Cates.

Review: Some two years after helping launch Favorite Recordings' reissue-focused SOL Discos imprint, label co-founder Waxist returns with a second volume of "Message In Our Music", a compilation focused - like its' predecessor - on little known "modern soul" from the late 1970s and early '80s. It is, of course, packed to the rafters with rare, slept-on gems, the majority of which change hands for silly money online. Highlights include - but are by no means limited to - the gentle gospel-boogie slickness of Sharnell Morton's "You Are My Shining Star", the glistening guitars and sun-kissed vocals of Direct Connec Shun's two-step soul gem "He's No" and the purple-coloured synth-funk hustle of Spice Of Ice's "Star Struck".

Review: This New Year, Jeff Mills is inviting us to look inward in the form of his Every Dog Has Its Day series. The last time we had an installment came 17 years ago, just enough time for a periodical cicada to emerge from theground, finished with its former life as a nymph. The sixth edition of this series is soon to follow in spring dressed in brown, continuing to deliver a spiritual and emotional raft for you to see that Every Dog Has Its Day. Mills himself has said, "You never figure out life, you just get used to it." Reflected in this record is that sentiment, that life doesn't present to you the answers because there are none. What is right and just for you, may not be for me, so how can I share with you any secrets. Electronic music can act as a guide, a catalyst of your headspace; it is not the map.

Review: Last March Suction Records released "Dopamine", an album of unreleased late 1990s recordings by obscure and arguably overlooked Dutch producer Erik Jong AKA RX 101. "Serenity", the sequel, was compiled from tapes of tracks recorded in the same period. It's a little different to its predecessor, offering creepier, drowsier melodies and far more robust, redlined beats - the kind of metallic, mutant IDM drums associated with the mid-to-late 1990s output of both Autechre and Aphex Twin. The quality threshold remains high throughout, making us wonder why Jong's inspired creations weren't released when he made them. Whatever the reason, it's great that we now get to wallow in his soon-to-be-classic 90s IDM treats.

Review: There may now be no mystery surrounding the identity of deep house hero Grant - last year it was revealed that it was an alias of Frank & Tony member Anthony Collins - but the allure of his work remains as strong as ever. His first album for Lobster Theremin, "Fantasy Blues", is warm, melodious, musically detailed and far more imaginative than most deep house albums you'll hear this year. It sees Collins flit between oven-hot, jazz-funk influenced electronica ("Ephemeral Chase"), revivalist early '90s NYC deep house ("Mind & Space", "Finite Elements"), loose-and-languid ultra-deep goodness ("Amaranthine Profundity", "Blurred Harmony") and the kind of relaxed, intergalactic fare that sits somewhere between ambient techno and ocean-deep dream house. In other words, it's superb.

Review: Bohren and Der Club of Gore has always been one of Germany's most intriguing and out there bands - a group rooted in grindcore and doom metal whose hard-to-pigeonhole output draws on a myriad of intriguing influences outside those intense styles. "Patchouli Blue", their tenth studio set since forming in 1992, is another moody and atmospheric gem: a challenging and experimental set that pits angst-ridden guitar textures against hallucinatory, David Lynch style cinematic sounds, hypnotic electronics and smoky, off-kilter jazz expressions. It's not a great departure from their previous albums, but when your sound is so distinctive - and inspired for that matter - why tear up the (Patchouli) blueprint?

Review: Somewhat poetically, Anthony Naples describes his third album, "Fog FM", as a "house music transmission filtered through fluorescent static, from a station out of place and time". You'll certainly find some blasts of evocative radio static dotted around the album - see the drowsy wooziness of ambient numbers "Channel 2" and "Channel 3", not to mention the pops and crackles wrapped around sub-heavy, stripped back peak-time workout "Unhygenix" - but the lasting impression is of a smartly-produced set of mostly club-ready cuts that subtly doff a cap to many sub-genres of house and techno. It's a superb set, too, with highlights including the wayward techno intensity of "Benefit", the "Brown Album"-era Orbital heaviness of "Purple Iris" and the tough, dubbed-out deep house headiness of "Lucys".

Review: It's been 20 years since loose-knit NYC hip-hop crew D.I.T.C released "The Official Version", a vastly different version of their self-titled, Tommy Boy released debut album. As this reissue proves, it was arguably a superior set, with more inventive beats, more varied instrumentation and a couple of killer tracks that for one reason or another had been omitted from the Tommy Boy release. An all-star affair, the LP boasted beats from Diamond D, DJ Premier, Show, Lord Finesse and many more NYC hip-hop heavy hitters. It's perhaps for this reason that the set has lasted the test of time so well, as this essential anniversary reissue proves. If it's not in your collection already you should really cop a copy.
