  4. Vincent Inc - "So In Love With DEEP" (6:09)
Review: Astrolife gathers together a cast of classy house warriors who know how to take things deep in style. Nigel Hayes opens the 12" up with an iconic sample framed by smoky pads and chunky rhythms. Collate & Balaur bring something a little more dubby, and dare we say it's infected with a little Goa-ready hypnosis. M&M get remixed by DJ Rocca for the high-pressure, Colonel Abrams-flavoured "Vibe" and Vincent Inc tackles a classic from Duke and creates a freaked-out exotic fever dream of a version for the adventurous souls out there. It's the perfect finishing touch to a record that balances poppy appeal with electronic weirdness in a fresh and flamboyant way.

  4. Taxi (Francis Inferno Orchestra Dreaming Of A Wonthaggi version) (6:08)
Review: FINA Records presents Terrence Pearce's 'Last Night Lover EP' featuring the return of Francis Inferno Orchestra on the rework.

Having previously released on a number of prominent labels including Futureboogie, Wolf Music, Petfood, Kolor, Dark Energy and Freshmeat, Cape Town based DJ/Producer Terrence Pearce has emerged as a talented and sought after artist and is the latest quality edition to FINA Records' roster. Here 'Last Night Lover EP' offers up a healthy dose of the forward thinking house productions for which Terrence has become renowned; a 3 tracker that demonstrates his impeccable sonic style and production prowess.

The title track sets the tone from the off. The long and drawn out spacey synths transfix whilst the fading in and out of the subdued strings, offset against the low end warble and the foregrounded off beat percussion, give this classy understated cut a deliciously smooth and timeless quality.

'Come On Yah' meanwhile is a warm and effortless disco edged groove, characterized by its infectious low-end throb and clever concoction of playful rhythms, punchy hats, staccato strings and off kilter chords.

Then, out of nowhere 'Taxi' arrives; a wonderfully leftfield amalgamation of horn beeping, door slamming, taxi hollering madness, aggressive techno stabs and a relentless belter of a bass line which drives the contagious rhythm to an unexpected frenetic funk filled break.

Last up and hot off the back of his widely acclaimed debut album 'A New Way of Living', Melbourne's Francis Inferno Orchestra returns to FINA, this time on 'Taxi' remixing duties. After a masterful dose of his signature drum machine rhythms, early rave like samples and rainforest atmospherics FIO softens the original into near obscurity.

  1. Inside (5:16)

Review: Matthew Farrow takes a break from his Kepler alias to deliver this sure shot of garage rudeness to Burnski's Instinct label, and he's sounding absolutely on point. "Inside" has plenty of MC flava sprinkled over it, not to mention all the 4x4 rudeness you could wish for from the bassline upwards. "Steppa" is a more soulful cut with a crafty breakstep twist to it, while "Rouge Fader" brings it back to that naughty middle ground between uptempo house and proper swinging garage, DX7 organ and all. "Break" gets tricky with the drum licks again, completing a set of good time rabble rousing business.

Review: The Botanic Minds Sunset Series maintains a lovely sense of mystery with its uncredited artists and rock solid concept - there's something mystical about that sunset dancefloor moment which all four tracks on this 12" capture perfectly. There's a little whiff of trance in the mix, but it's delivered in an elegant and poised context, offset by sleek house grooves and peppered with just the right amount of psychedelic sound design to send the mind spiraling skywards. After a day kicking up the dust on a sandy beach or sweaty terrace, this is just the balm you need to bring on the dusk.

  1. A City At Night (6:12)
  2. The Dream (extended edit) (4:46)
Review: For the latest missive on their fast-rising DET313 label, Gary Martin and Yossi Amoyal have dug deep into the archives of Martin's long-running Teknotika Records imprint. First up on the A-side is a re-mastered version of "A City At Night", a Martin cut from 1990 that mixes the futurist intent of Motor City techno with chunkier, UK style techno grooves and the kind of stabs and musical flourishes more associated with Robert Hood or Terrence Parker records. Side B boasts a freshly extended edit of another Martin gem - this time under the Gigi Galaxy alias - from 1994. "The Dream" more than lives up to its title, with Martin wrapping restless bass, starry lead lines, alien electronics and sumptuous chords around a hypnotic deep techno groove.

Review: Over the past couple of years Niko Maxen has been busy firing out hit after hit of refined minimal with an emphasis on moody atmospheres and intricate, off-centre groove programming. From early releases on Pathway Traxx to recent outings on Roche Noire, Rowle and many others, he's already got a lot of heat behind him, and so it continues with this killer 12" for Constant Black. "Go Gently" is a dense, electrifying workout with a killer beat and spooked out pads, while "Sanctuary" edges towards bubbling modular synth lines perfect for psychotropic warm-ups. "Cosmic Jazz" is a little more straight-up in its demeanour, albeit with wigged out FX sends riding over the top, while "Light Drizzle" heads into tripped out territory once again.

  1. Think (Retro Roland Riso Perfecto rework) (4:27)
  2. Get Out Of My Way (Retro Roland Riso Eterno Regroove) (3:47)
Review: Earlier in the year, Matasuna Records reissued two rare and exceedingly hard to find tracks by Peruvian band Bossa 70. They'll soon be offering up more original cuts from the band's sought-after debut album, but before then they're treating us to two dancefloor-focused re-edits of Bossa 70 classics by American DJ/producer Retro Roland Riso. On the A-side he delivers a DJ-friendly "Perfecto Edit" of Think, a horn-heavy slab of Peruvian funk rich in rubbery beats and hazy bass. Just as cheery and life affirming is his interpretation of "Get Out Of My Way". This is an altogether heavier, faster and more stomping revision, though it's the vibrancy of the psychedelic era Latin funk backing track that really sets the pulse racing.

Review: It feels like barely any time has passed since Javi Frias last set our bags alight with "Just Give It Up", but he's back once more on his own Night Shift with more of those oh-so-cool edits to share with the world. The strain of disco funk he's digging into on this record is just sublime, particularly on the A side with the self-explanatory "Party Music" and sweet string sizzle of "Keep On". On the B side there's a fiercer uptempo slant to "So Tight" and a more classic soul feel to "Everything" - one to bring a crowd together in a moment of heartfelt expression whether they know the words or not.

Review: After a first volume that included Smagghe & Cross and Tom Bolas, Duca Bianco are back with another round of deviant disco delights for discerning diggers to get down to. Indovina Key's "Suy Taysik" is an insanely catch slice of synthy-disco, while Guillaume De Bois bathes in the sludge, all held together by some gorgeous full-fat leads. The omin-present Cherrystones brings a heavier tint to the B side with the clattering pots n' pans vibe of "Grunts Breakfast" and then Maybe Tonight bring a serious dose of 80s madcap sampling and boogie funk to "Tribuna Politica".

  2. It's Just Begun (part 2) (4:54)
Review: Although arguably better known these days for his "Soopastole" edits series, Soopasoul has made plenty of original music in his time. In fact, he's rarely made many better records than "It's Just Begun", a two-part cover of the Jimmy Castor Bunch classic that first saw the light of day on Jalapeno Records back in 2008. The A-side instrumental cover is fairly faithful to Castor and company's original - especially the heavyweight bottom-end groove - while adding far more sax and trumpet solos and some seriously flanged guitars. The longer flipside "Part 2" version mixes things up a little, building up the groove in stages before unleashing the killer horn solos and ten-ton bassline. It's arguably the better of the two versions, though both are superb.

Review: If you like your electro to be scraped off the sewer pipes and flambeed for extra effect, then ZEMENT have you covered with this mucky gem from Alonzo. "Time Tales" has the kind of grinding synth tones and dystopian vocoder action that would be right at home in a Helena Hauff DJ set, while "My Vibe" switches things up with a saucy vocal take from WMN that comes on like Peaches jamming with Dopplereffekt. "Shades Of Tuch" takes things in a spooky direction, while "The Dead Cry" keeps things sparse and chilling. "Patch Dance" turns the distortion up to 11, and "Ten Fold Rule" rounds things off with another wonderfully murky lead line for the end of days.

The German producer's ambient tendencies blossom here, occasionally meeting with laconic drums as on "U" but primarily dealing in huge swathes of melody. DJs will want to hold out for the dramatic pulse of "Ann", where a more pronounced drum set makes for one of the album's most club-ready moments. There's a strong variety of tones and moods across Youth Sessions, from the strafing arpeggios of "Running" to the bliss-out shapeless swirl of "Prismatic Prolog", and this ensures that the album will not dull with repeated listens.

  2. Lee Dorsey - "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley" (Soul Flip edit) (4:01)
Review: For their latest trick, Soul Flip duo Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo [sic] have turned their attention to classic cuts from Lee Dorsey and Gladys Knight and the Pips. It's the latter's rare cut "If You Ever Get Your Hands On Love" that gets the scalpel treatment first, with the pair cutting up and looping the opening piano riff before extending the Motown style song's stomping groove and inspired vocals to better suit modern dancefloors. On the flip it's all about their take on Lee Dorsey's 1970 song "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley", a DJ-friendly version that sneakily extends key instrumental passages to make the track well over a minute longer than the original. Given that Dorsey's version is arguably too short, we think it's a much-needed adjustment.

First up on this 12" is Chris Stussy, who whips up an especially funky concoction with the bubbling "Monday 8th", before DJOKO and T Jacques dub things out in style with the swirling but thumping "Directions". Jamahr completes the set with "Underwater", a deep immersion bath of sound that edges towards classic techno while keeping the groove on the straight and narrow.

Review: Making his first appearance on Constant Sound, Subb-An comes correct with the deadly breaks flow of "Access" that pivots neatly between bass music and the minimal house blueprint. "Rewire" is a much lighter affair thanks to a classy chord sound that modulates at the core of the track, bringing a melodic hook into the mix to wonderful effect. Burnski and Michael James then team up as Relic to deliver a remix of "Rewire" that's heavy on the funk, doing a great job of tweaking that chord line and pouring some serious heft into the lower regions of the frequency range.

  1. Different Planet
  2. Substance Of Arjuna
  3. Racoons
Review: Finale Sessions is really pleased to launch new series Finale Sessions Limited with Berlin up and coming act Arcarsenal. Duo comprised of Alan Mathias and Etienne Dauta, both founders of Bass Cadet Records and its dedicated vinyl store located in the heart of the german capital, they are also active members of the large Underground Quality family. Arcarsenal have already started to establish themselves as proponent of a crossover sound, mixing many influences from jazz, house, ambient to dub and techno. They are always giving a prominence to jam, improvisation and textures work in their studio routine. This EP called « Dark Skies & Wetlands », even if slightly grittier than usual, is no stranger to the rules of the duo. The opening track « Different Planet » is an epic dark deep house cut which develops itself over a course of 8:40. Starting with a stamping ground bassline and hazy atmosphere, the track opens up with synth attacks, dub echoes and slowly brings in a blissful melody that ends up linking all the elements. « Substance Of Arjuna », the following track on the A-side, is a-contrario a short but intense ambient work. Shot in one take, this subtle cut showcases the kind experimentations that Mathias and Dauta can end up doing late at night in front of their machines. The b-side of the EP leaves all the space to « Racoons », one of the weirdest and yet most powerful work of the duo to date. Tribal techno could be a short try to define what they achieved here, but the track goes far more than this. Built on a gritty mental acidic bass and a huge drum kick, the frenchmen bring over aggressive synth work that could sound like an orchestra on rehearsal, pachydermic screams or an overdriven guitar larsen. Underlined by a complex percussion pattern recorded live in their nest and chopped up to the best effect, the track ends up in a looping transe from which the listener might not leave in a normal state.

Glover and Dean Zepherin, and now the upfront house label brings together another selection of party heaters from a range of producers. Saison makes a welcome return with the feisty "Till The Day I Die", a richly produced vocal jam with plenty of uptempo shuffle in the drums. Risk Assessment lean on the keys to create a melodic mood on "I Don't Understand" and then Saison does it again with the bright and breezy "The Riff". That leaves it to Natasha Kitty Katt to finish things up with the heavy funking disco licks of "Plenty Good" - a get-down cut for all seasons.

The EP of new material kicks off with "I Love My House", a bouncy acid burner built for prime time good times, before launching straight into the more stripped back tension of "You Have Time". "Made In China" has a more vintage feel to it, harking back to the early days of Robotnick's career in killer Italo style. On the flip we're treated to some seriously on point remixes - one from Camille and one from Kai Alce, who both deliver superlative contemporary funk ups of the original.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Straight To The Source (7:07)
  2. Hypnotonic (West Side Shuffle) (8:44)
Review: After they last shared wax on Mosaic back in 2017, UK dub techno veteran Steve O'Sullivan and prolific minimal house rising star Frazer Campbell link up once again for the sleek and sophisticated sounds of "Straight To The Source". It's a shuffling, funky workout with understated b-lines to suck you in and subtle splashes of reverb to shape out a heady atmosphere. "Hypnotonic (West Side Shuffle)" on the flip has a more bubbling, psychedelic quality to it, without losing that cool Mosaic veneer that makes these joints so workable in so many different situations.

Dance (heavyweight vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: VR 150. Rel: 23 Dec 19
Funky/Club House
  1. Dance (Louie Vega dance ritual mix) (11:26)
  2. Dance (Louie Vega latin soul mix) (9:34)
Review: The 3 Winans Brothers project is made up of Bebe Winans and Daniel Weatherspoon, who appear here courtesy of Masters At Work legend Louie Vega...on his very own Vega imprint! Their "Dance" tune features The Clark Sisters on backing vocals and is herein remixed twice by Vega: the first is the "dance ritual mix", a soulful house cut with an r&b twist, while the "latin soul mix" focusses more heavily on the house beats and it's a more typical Vega tune which could feature in a typical Vega set, rotary mixer and all!

Deep House
  1. Boxbeat
  2. Taste o'Rainbow
  3. Freshness
Review: French label D3 Elements returns to Chicago for its next EP, this time looking to the assured house talents of Hakim Murphy for three tracks of raw, dense grooves right from the heart of the Windy City. Opener 'Boxbeat' is a curious, freaky jam with bobbing percussive hits, wonky, pixel thin synth lines and free roaming pads that wrap the whole thing in a nice sense of spaced-out serenity. 'Taste o'Rainbow' has a much more firmly planted kick drum that pounds away uninterrupted below a free flowing brew of modulate synth sounds. It's expertly reduced and masterfully reserved and is sure to send dance floors wild as a result. The flipside cut 'Freshness' has pinging drums and a big, frazzled bass line as slithering chords rain down the face. Musical yet jacking, cosmic yet propulsive, it is a perfectly contemporary Chicago house sound that rounds out a fine EP from one of the best in the game.

Techno
  1. Hat Of Osiris (6:45)
  2. Snooper (5:03)
  3. Histoire Du Bouclard (5:31)
  4. Process (7:30)
Review: The second release on Lonewolf finds the EYA sister label exploring some particularly fruity strains of house and techno. "Hat Of Osiris" has a gutsy punch to it, a mean swing and a raw analogue flavour to the synths that make it pure firepower for the club. "Snooper" has a more electro-techno flavour, although once more the freaked out flutter of the synths suggest some grungy gear being deployed in the production process. "Histoire Du Bouclard" opts for outright electro - the kind that might sit comfortably on a label like Breakin Records. "Process" completes the set with an acid-laced workout that's equal parts dreamy and nasty.

Techno
  1. Steady Stare (5:33)
  2. Let Us In (5:22)
  3. Mystic Strings (5:20)
  4. Someday (5:31)
Review: It feels like too long since we heard anything new from Joey Anderson, but it's wonderful to see him returning to the fray on a label we love as dearly as Uzuri. It's plain to hear none of the US techno maverick's wild edges have dulled in the interim - "Steady Stare" bristles with angular energy as ear-snagging as it is individual. "Let Us In" is another fluttering techno piece with East Coast toughness balanced out by pattering psychedelia. "Mystic Strings" amps up the trippy synth lines in stunning fashion, and "Someday" takes things in a more brooding direction without losing that distinctive spark that makes Anderson such a marvel to behold.
