If anything, the hugely prolific Motor City mainstay that is Omar S seems to be getting even more prolific as time goes on. His vast catalogue grows once more here with Fun House, which finds Alister Fawnwoda exploring a wide range of dance music styles alongside guests such as FXHE regular John F.M., plus Mitchell Yoshida, Super Cool Wired, Troi Alexis, Tyesha Blount and more, with all the production, lyrics and mixing taken care of by Omar S himself. The tracks range from seductive deep house to edgy mechanical techno, dubbed out downbeat joints and smooth electronic Detroit soul. It is yet another crucial chapter in the FXHE and Omar S story.

Techno
Leon Carson - "China Trax" (8:32)
Theo Parrish - "Insane Asylum" (9:57)
Review: Oh yes, we love it when Theo represses some of his most sought after tracks and this one is particularly well-timed. Leron Carson is still an unknown figure, a kid who used to make viciously raw and futuristic techno tracks in the late 1980's! "China Trax", alongside the rest of his tracks on a different Sound Signature double 12", is totally ahead of its time and if it was truly made in 1987 then it is nothing short of amazing. Of course, it's not just the year it was made in that's interesting but also the fact that it's music without an age, able to be appreciated by any generation of techno freaks. Theo's own "Insane Asylum" on the flipside is also pretty monumental; rigged beats, off-kilter grooves and that familiar spontaneity so heavily associated to the label.

Sometime last year it was ripped of by Pharrell and company for Missy Elliot's "Lose Control" and (with the notable exceptions of Kraftwerk, Brian Eno etc.) it's generally been the blueprint for everything techno from '83 onwards. Review: Well, we couldn't really be happier. In fact, there is almost nothing to say about this album apart from the fact that it is absolutely, downright essential. Originally released in 1986 on Rough Trade here in the UK, it has been reissued a few time over the years but has always vanished in the blink of an eye and reappeared on the EBay and Discogs circuits for big bucks. Finally, you can indulge in a beautifully remastered version on virgin vinyl. In what is seen by many cultic Russell fans as perhaps his biggest achievement, the LP drifts in and out of light and shadows with utter ease, truly portraying the genius of the man who paved much of the way for modern electronic music generally. From start to finish, it's an ethereal mixture of sparse beats, effect manipulations and folklore, charismatically told by one of the only artists in the history of experimental music to really combine and successfully bind so many unexpected musical terrains. We are only mere mortals, so we won't describe the music to you...just get yourself a copy and see...

Review: We've been digging in our warehouse and found some classic electro from the prolific Boris Divider on the superb Satamile Records. This EP was released almost 20 years ago but you couldn't tell - the electro contained within it is as sharp as a knife and relevant as a selfie. 'Clone Factory' kicks off with lashings of metallic snares and jagged rhythms, 'Robot Skin' brings some high-speed cyborg funk and 'Digital Mind' then cruises through the cosmos on coruscated low ends. 'New Race' closes out with a fourth and final electro workout of the highest order.

Review: Bringing together a joint history that could keep Simon Schama in brogues for the rest of his days, "Superstructure" marks the union of Christopher Dell - author, director of the Institute for Improvisation Technology Insel and, most importantly, World-renowned vibraphone player - and Roman Flugel (aka Alter Ego, Acid Jesus, Soylent Green etc.). The results are predictably awesome. Plundering styles like coked up Vikings, 'Superstructure' flickers into life through the opening title-track, wherein a Jelinek-esque cushion of wing-clipped syncopations and glitch-fed jazz rustle towards a muted conclusion. Preventing any kind of complacency, Dell & Flugel immediately swap scripts, inviting cascading xylophones and throaty breaks for the duration of "Urban Practise"; a sound which is abandoned wantonly for the scattered vibes-drum duet of "Miniaturisation" and the Hancock flirtations of "Wolkenbugel". Dabbling in blue-sky techno on "4 Door Body Cell", hypno-glitch for "Dirty Realism" and jazz-tickled drum & bass "Habitation", Dell & Flugel prove they're jack of all trades, master of, well, most...

It's simplistic beauty and heartfelt vocals make for a truly amazing piece of music that breaks all genre boundaries. Long since deleted, the dub and vocal mix appear on this limited white label promo. Possibly inspired by the passing of the late Jay Dilla, this music is perfect for relaxing and kicking back, or even warming up the early hours of the club. While Detroit hip-hop producers already proved that there's a mutual creative interaction between the cities house, techno and hip-hop scenes, it's now one of the cities hottest house producers laying down some smoked out, next level instrumentals in the vein of the late genius Jay Dilla, Madlib or Underground Resistance's Hipnotech sublabel.

Review: As Radiohead tour the world and then regroup to record their new album, Thom Yorke releases his own record, 'The Eraser' on XL Recordings. A collection of nine new songs, the record was written and played by Thom and was produced by Nigel Godrich. Variously hailed as "The Best Band In The World" (Q Magazine), "Rock's Best Live Band" (Rolling Stone) and the band were placed at number 1 of Spin Magazine's 40 most influential artists, Radiohead has arguably become the most acclaimed and adventurous force in modern music. Over six studio albums the group have proved that it is possible to make massive creative leaps whilst continuing to grow in worldwide stature. Their records set new benchmarks for others to aim towards, whilst their live shows reach levels of intensity and exploration that few can match.

Review: The latest Studio One release to be released on Soul Jazz Records features a stellar line-up of Jamaica's finest ever musicians. The legendary Skatalites, alongside the later Studio One in-house bands the Soul Vendors, Sound Dimension, Soul Defenders and Brentford All Stars, were as much a part of the classic Studio One sound as were the singers that they accompanied, such as Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, Marcia Griffiths and Bob Marley And The Wailers. This album features many of the musicians involved with Studio One who literally defined Reggae music. From the Skatalites members Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso and Jackie Mittoo to killer sidemen such as trombonist Vin Gordon (aka Don Drummond Jnr), saxophonist Cedric 'Im' Brooks, keyboardist and Twelve Tribes Of Israel member Pablove Black. Many of the rhythms that these musicians created became the backbone of the Jamaican musical world and their songs have been replayed and re-versioned by 1000s of Reggae producers ever since. The album features classic and super-rare tracks all recorded under Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd's supervision at the legendary recording studio and record label. As well as seventeen killer tracks, the album comes with new sleeve notes and photography by Dennis Morris and Adrian Boot, making this another essential Studio One Reggae release for connoisseurs of Reggae and newcomers alike.

Review: Until now, finding Robert O'Dell's music has been nigh on impossible, with a couple of long deleted electro jams on the Metroplex sub-label Interface (produced with Juan Atkins) trading on eBay for daft amounts, and an obscure split EP released on Rephlex in 1998 standing as the only fruits of his labour. O'Dell is inspired by a lot of groups, from Kraftwerk to Duran Duran and has been in different bands all of his life, collaborating with such luminaries as George Clinton and with Model 500 /Juan Atkins for the Infiniti project and others. An electric vision of Detroit funk's future, "Cazelica" is his brave new sound. This six track LP fuses electrofunk and r&b with the dark energy of the techno sound he grew up with.

Review: Soul Jazz are releasing this new album that mixes deep percussive African rhythms and Afro- Jazz with elements of hip-hop and electronica recorded in Los Angeles, California. Produced by West Coast left-field hip-hop/electronic/jazz artist Carlos Nino aka Ammon Contact, the album features Adam Rudolph, Hamid Drake and Brahim Fribgane as well as special guest and deep jazz legend Yusef Lateef. Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake have between them played and recorded with Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Jah Wobble, Don Cherry and many more. With previous releases on Soul Jazz Records (Beautiful) and Scott Heren's (Prefuse 73) Eastern Developments label, Hu Vibrational's deep spiritual music draws on the links between Africa, Jazz music and avant-garde hip-hop. Adam Rudolph co-founded the Mandingo Griot Society and has been working together for over recent years as musical partner to the great Yusef Lateef. He also runs the Go: Organic Orchestra, a 22 piece percussion group. Carlos Nino (aka Ammon Contact) has had releases on Ninja Tune, Soul Jazz Records, Eastern Development and Plug Research. As well as being an integral part of Hu Vibrational he has also produced Dwight Trible and The Life Force Trio, Build An Ark and the Go: Organic Orchestra.

Review: Who ever has been to Aix En Provence on the Mediterranean in France, will find it hard to stop rhapsodizing about it. For towns like Aix they invented the word picturesque. This colourful and quaint beauty makes us sulky-grey metro-Berlin people's eyes bleed. Nevertheless Mary Jane (aka Bloody Mary) swapped the cours Mirabeau with the Berlin TV tower and shows the big city where it's at with her dusky-deep minimal techno. This could not remain undiscovered very long, because Bloody Mary is mixing her ingredients of deep basses, profoundly buzzing sound-effects and bleeps with such a precision, that you get pitchforked onto the dancefloor right away, where standing ovations take turns with tumultuous dance-scenes. The record has been co-produced by Tassilo Ippenberger, also known from his Pan-Pot Project on Mobilee Records. Three tracks, that don't leave any question unanswered and match with sender perfectly. And Mary, don't worry, you will also survive you first Berlin Winter.

Review: In 1980 Tina Weymouth was playing bass for the Talking Heads while her husband Chris Frantz played drums. The couple were vacationing in the Bahamas when they met Monty Brown and Stephen Stanley. Together the four set out to make the kind of music that David Byrne and the Talking Heads stayed clear of: romantic, sunny, dance-able pop music. Their debut single, "Genius Of Love" is that classic early 80s cross between synth-pop and hip-hop, and went right to the top of the dance charts, securing them an identity separate from that of Talking Heads. It found a home in the samples of several hip-hop aficionados and was even nicked by Mariah Carey for her 90s hit, "Heartbreaker".

Heroes Of The Conquest (Faze Action remix)
Review: Another two club bangers from The Invisible Session's album repertoire, as remixed by the hugely influential UK DJs, Phil Asher and Faze Action (aka the Lee brothers). The two club re-works are in slick UK dance style. The appeasing feeling in the song "I Knew The Way" remains, although it is elegantly transported to the clubs' atmosphere courtesy of the touch given by veteran DJ/producer Phil Asher. Even though the bass drum is in 4/4 the result is always soulful, ever groovy and never predictable - as proved by Mr Asher’s care for details and sound effects, as well as the twiddled keys by non-other-than Mark De-Clive Lowe. This vinyl presents the vocal piece in fine soulful-house style on Side A, whereas on Side B is to be found the remix of an instrumental piece in the album "Heroes Of The Conquest". More driving and faster than the other 2 instrumentals of the album, "Invisible Blessing" and "Three For You", this re-work of it by respected dance-duo Faze Action is rich in bongos, sound effects and delays. In a smart way the powerful horn section of the original piece is here, led to impress and shake the tune to a possibly even higher extent, melting the Latin-jazz influence into a strongly rhythmic club tune. Tip!

Such Is The Ordeal
Review: The first two instalments of the brand new AM/PM 12" series guarantees a level of quality to all those converts to The End. With a soon-to-be-legendary performance coming up inside the crumbling glory of the east end - the fantastic Wilton's Music Hall - alongside fellow dust botherer Janek Schaeffer, Radovan Scasascia's increasing prominence on the live circuit promises further thrills galore. Radovan continues here in the same realm as with the acclaimed 'Also' EP. The source material here still comes from a carefully selected palette of final moments and last breaths of found recordings. The arrangements let them move in and out of time, creating mesmeric chance compositions, micro-tonal disharmonies and that typical AM/PM warmth. A total of four 12" releases are scheduled building up to a CD album due for 2007. Extremely high quality as always.

Brandon Bay - Farewell (Shoreline remix)
Review: Swedish travelling minstrel, Rickard Jäverling, returns to lavish upon us further moments of heartfelt, folk-inspired beauty. Spinning Scandinavian wordless folk-songs seems like second nature for Jäverling, and these tracks show quite perfectly his unique skills. Beginning with 'Three Sisters' (which also featured on his recent 'Two Times Five Lullaby' album) we're off to an explosive start; a 21st century hoedown with eyes fixed on frozen Northern European fields rather than rickety Pennsylvanian barns. With banjo, drums and guitar, Jäverling and his band manage to distil a Tortoise-inspired post-rock intelligence and blend it with the traditional folk sounds that seem to have made their way into the mainstream once more. Side A is rounded off with the shimmering and beautiful 'Västbacken', a hazy instrumental piece of folk poetry bringing to mind bubbling streams and the beauty of a childish midsummer adventure. The EP's defining moment however comes on the flipside with the 7 minute epic 'Sultan'. It's hard to imagine a track more life affirming than this, which takes the Chicago post-rock formula and re-contextualises it for 2006, giving us something both reflective and quietly jubilant. Finishing off the disc are fellow Yesternow artists, Shoreline, who have ushered Jäverling into their ever-growing family and contributed a 'remix' which takes the original track and injects it with a sense of fun and playful abandon. 'The Three Sisters EP' adds yet further weight to the growing Yesternow catalogue, and is more proof of the subtle and measured talents of Rickard Jäverling.

Review: What the fuck is this? It's the new record from that well known and more than exceptional artist, Jochen Heib. His puristic, sexy-cool funk beats are pure acid - without the 303. Music that is analogue and old school in the best of ways. Heib plays with references to history without coming across as being retro.

Review: So the legend goes like this: Jeremy Herpe (aka From Karaoke To Stardom) saw Alex Under playing in Paris. From that moment he knew what he wanted to do - make music. A few months later he had his first release! This young French producer is one of the most talented newcomers in the techno world.

Review: The main track here shows a slightly different facette of Omar S. Thirteen/Two/Eight, released on FXHE, has a handclapping, twitching beat with a quirky lively synth melody, classic italo disco and early 80 boogie sounds from a Detroit point of view. A vivid techno track and a darker ambient outing keep the quality high.

Review: After his debut release with remixes from Arpanet and Mr Oizo, Kavinsky is back! Killed in a car crash back in 1986, Kavinsky is now a zombie in need of revenge. This record, released on Record Makers, is the story of his first steps in the world of the living dead. Three powerful and original tracks and a Sebastian remix. A bloody good one too.

Miscalate (Partial Arts remake)
Review: "Miscalate" starts off as a smooth, deep house record but quickly chooses a darker path. A big rumbling bassline takes over with sharp electronics following closely behind. It's the interesting structure and musical side of the track that really makes it stands out. Partial Arts, a new project from Ewan Pearson and Al Usher, take control and not just remix but remake the track! They've delivered something rather special. A very unique, different and exciting production that will surely be turning heads and pricking the ears of many - Partial Arts are a name to watch.

Review: GQ's 'Disco Nights' is a must-have classic disco re-issue from Arista.
A Bronx group that effectively mixed East Coast disco and Chicago soul covers in
the late '70s and early '80s, GQ began as Sabu the Survivors in 1968. 'Disco Nights (Rock-Freak)' peaked at top 12 pop;
this single also won GQ an American Music Award.

Review: "Ruff Draft", originally released in 2003, is a sought-after album that remains the elusive key release in J Dilla's catalogue. This has freewheeling, in-your-face synthesizers, and an uncharacteristically sample-heavy approach that is as banging as it is experimental.

Chanchita
Kimono
Review: It is with immense joy that we present for the first time on Musique Risquée the Montreal/Argentinean duo Chic Miniature, composed of Ernesto Ferreyra and Gabriel Coutu-Dumont. They bring their EP, "Poco-A-Gogo". As their alias so aptly reveals, Chic Miniature fabricates intricately sculpted little gems, finely crafted works that unravel like finely woven lace. Their delicate structures and warm spellbinding melodies trigger rich imagery while fervently rousing the desire to groove. "Chanchita" plunges us directly into an electropical jungle where fractured voice and percussion bustle around an elegant succession of elements woven into a slow progression both organic and sexy. An aural oasis. The warm and sensuous piece, "Kimono", will leave no trace of indifference. The magnificent and obscure quasi-mystical Latin melodies, the unmistakable signature of Chic Miniature, reveal an immense sensitivity and sensuality. All is strung together by a solid rhythmic structure that will surely move your feet before the information even reaches your brain. "Kimono" invites us on an expedition through the furrows of certain unknown sombre terrains, such as an unmarked seductive mirage at the heart of a dessert where anything can transpire. A classic.

Review: Another great gem from Casablanca. D.C. Larue is a songwriter and instrumentalist who emerged in the mid-'70s with a series of heavily orchestrated, disco-
orientated instrumentals with vocal refrains. 'Let them dance' is one of the records you should have in your collection. b/w Dennis Parker's 'Like An Angel'.

Kreiskollaps (Federico Molinari remix)

Review: Kreiskollaps is the track which starts the new Oslo Label, having proved it's ability to rock dance floors nationwide. Christian Burkhardt presents a slice of contemporary Minimalism, adding lush atmospheres and rounding it up with a deep pumping bassline. Think that's enough? Wait till you here Federico Molinari's Remix. It's more on the housy and hypnotic tip but still maintains the whole context of the track and is sure as hell going to move your butt.
