Hammer & Sickle
Fear Of Gadaffi
Nettle Cloth
Baize Tents
Review: Early on in Muslimgauze's (Bryn Jones') career, the musician released two ultra-mysterious releases on the equally mysterious label Hessian, which some speculate might've been comprised entirely of Jones himself. Hammer & Sickle was one of these two early LPs from the faux Arabic auteur, and was notable for its distinct lack of any back cover artwork (who needs a visual stimulus when you've got such great music on board?). Though still indicative of Jones' work as Muslimgauze, superfans will note that this release sounds a little more formative than some of his later releases, owing to its lessened use of Middle Eastern instrumentation and sparser production in general. B-sider 'Fear Of Gadaffi' is the most intermittent in this regard, revelling more than anything in the simple effect of spring delay on sampled, freeform perc hits.

Tear On My Chin
People (feat Ursula Rucker)
Review: Philly's very own Brewerytown Reocrds releases new music from the city's longtime fixture Ron Aikens and his backing band the Hip Tones. Following in the traditional soul 45 rpm single format, 'Tear On My Chin', comes in the form of a sweet ballad side with a funk side on the flip. A staccato piano jabbing, r&b Philly soul ditty to the letter, the song hears Aitkens, the city's musical heart and soul, ruminate on love lost, culminating in the symbolic "tear on my chin", a dualistic portrayal of mourning and carrying on despite the pain.

Review: Zodiak Commune has become a tried and true outpost for edgy electro in recent times, and they've been incubating the talent of Dima Gastroler across a run of releases in 2024. The run of form continues as Gastroler locks in with 'Zero Tolerance', an icy blast of machine funk with strafing synths in the classic electro style. There's similar movement sweeping across 'REConnection', albeit with more pronounced acidity in the lead lines. 'Instinct' keeps the pressure up with the dirtiest of basslines and razor sharp beats, and then a more melodic tint creeps into EP closer 'Agnetic Storm' to end the record on a more sombre note.

Review: Mother Tongue pushes on with more sounds from the constantly evolving creative mind of Julion De'Angelo. His vibe is soulful, modern yet proudly Black, and always has a big focus on the dumps. This debut for the label carries on that tradition with opener 'NOWnormal' built on a rugged rhythm and laden with percussion and off-grid chords. 'NotAnotherCafe!!' (with Deon Jamar - Turmeric Latte mix) has more sunny synths and a percolating low end reminiscent of Theo Parrish and 'MyzticBounz' rides roughshod on broken beats and busted synths that bring a raw sense of soul.

Review: Straight from Producer Dan Ubick's Lions Den Studio, Night Owls presents two re-imagined soul classics here. First, soul sensation Eli 'Paperboy' Reed tackles Ray Charles' 'You Don't Know Me.' Ubick sought someone to infuse soul into the song once sung by 'The Genius' himself, finding it in Reed, whose journey from Massachusetts to Mississippi's Delta shaped his soulful style. On Side B, Jr Thomas & The Volcanos bring their Rocksteady flair to Eddie Kendricks' 'If You Let Me,' paying homage to Jamaican legend Winston Riley. Night Owls' versions inject new life into these classics, ready to ignite the dance floor with their infectious grooves.

Review: Italo disco heads take note, here's a quintessential one-hit wonder from a mystery crew known only as Kash. Arriving in 1981, this particular release leans more towards the organic, band-led sound of the 70s with some choice synth flourishes on top, rather than the more driving sound which would catch hold further into the 80s. 'Supercool' is a bubbling, funky-as-hell joint which will loosen up any dancefloor with ease, but 'Percussion Sundance' might well be the popular pick here thanks to its outstanding drums and hazy ambience. It's an essential purchase for anyone who loves a proper disco curveball made the classic way.

Review: Apparel Wax on Apparel Music records has recently started a 7" series of which this is the third instalment of. These 45 DJ friendly records are sure to be hits with house music DJs and fans both. The music does the talking as the tracks are simply called 'Track 1' and 'Track 2'. The first blends jazz, funk into a house instrumental frenzy that has all the makings of a classic late night success. The second one is quite unusual and unique, adding a broken almost jungle beat that goes great with the piano. This gives us some real early 90s UK rave flashbacks! This versatile 7" should go over great with those who hear it!

Review: AF 1268 welcomes a true UK tech house don in Rob Pearson for its second release, and another fine one it is too. Once again he mixes up his slick infectious grooves with acid twitches and tripped out sonic motifs that make for tunes as effective on the mind as they are the body. 'It Works' is a slinky opener with low slung bass, 'The Darkhold' is more driven with dubbed out low ends and 'Far Far Out' gets a lil' freaky for the after party. 'Moderno Nocturno' (with Kirsten Sees) is a gritty and metallic tech cut with real snap in the drums. A superb EP that offers plenty of DJs and dancers.

Review: Barcelona's 22Recordings takes a break from the usual electro fare with an intriguing fusion of minimal tech and electro - dare we say, 'minimal mech' - from DJ and producer Anah, the '22247005' EP. Far from a Sophie Ellis-Bextor flip, opener 'Murder On The Dancefloor' narrativises the act of contriving a hitman for hire, with a sinister voice urging as to clarify whether they can indeed be of assistance to the listener. This character accompanies us throughout the four-track journey, which is otherwise constituted of parping yet dark electro-disco sonics and consistently techy 4x4 draws, among which 'Fatality' is the most enticing.

Review: IO E Palmieri has cooked up the sort of anthemic and festival-friendly techno tune that will be heard all over the world as soon as the sun comes out and the big tops get erected. It has simple but effective rolling beats, some neat and rising melodies and a celestial Italian vocal that will get hands in the air as people march along. Naples-based techno star Debora De Luca then steps up to remix and quickens the groove and tightens up the synths so that are a bit more forceful. It's another effective cut from this big-time circuit favourite.

Review: Pressure Traxx secures the sounds of acclaimed minimal master and Romanian mainstay Dan Andrei on this fine new 12", Clockworks. The title track opens up and is coarse and rich in texture, with slapping hits taking centre stage while languid guitars slowly garner your attention. 'Theme For What' is another unusual one, this time with trippy melodies and tumbling drum loops, while 'Geek Groove Odyssey' layers up pulsing bass and bleeping sonar synths into a serene cosmic trip. 'Out Of Mood' is another tense tech cut with edgy synths keeping you in suspense as the dark drums march on.

Review: Zion Train remain a unique and rebellious contemporary dub act, updating the classic sound for the present era, all while channelling a uniquely icy sound of their own, not to mention an exciting live act and an immediately impressing frontal voice by singer Molara. Dissident Sound came out in 2023 and was met with acclaim for its harshly sparse and cold, but still quirky and sunny palette, clearly informed by trip-hop and northernmost hinterlands of post-punk; this subsequent remix EP, however, curves the ball once again, charting new reworks by the likes of Paolo Baldini, Dub FX, Insintensi and Professor Skank.

From Leo Conovaloff's 'Edoras' to Nacho Varela & Cruz Vittor's 'Could Be', this is deep progressive house at its most sophisticated, where all artists fill out the bandwidth to its maximum - barely allowing a millisecond sonic negative space, yet somehow balancing this out with a patient sense of development and harmony with every passing second.

Review: Parisian techno talent AIROD is next up on Charlotte de Witte's unstoppable KNTXT label with four blistering and innovative new tracks. Known for his muscular, neck-breaking take on techno, the French producer and DJ drops four riveting, maximised vocal neo-rave cuts here; all manifest sonically in the same vein as those earlier exclusives once said to have fired up the warehouse raves of yore in his native Paris. A testament to the producer's current state of mind, we can only infer what this might be; the tunes are avowedly melodious yet ultra-punchy, and do well to strip the pretensions of purists, goading them into a four-track round of maximally intense fun.

'Refuse' is an original cut made with O.Love, a renowned turntablist and vocalist and notable subject of DJ City's popular 'Turntablism Meets Soul Music' documentary. 'Refuse' is lent a well-rounded and nigh perfected, yet lax sheen, with DSK's unagitated add-prod lending a laboured swing to O.Love's brilliant beltings. Evans goes first with 'In Time' which is coated in nice dusty pads and frayed medic edges with a grinding melody that brings some funk to the deepness. 'I'm Down' is another rugged deep house cut with loose kick patterns and swirling pads. Ruh then brings her signature smoky basement house sounds to 'S41' with its rickety percussion and warm infusing of supple synths. 'S45' shuts down with dubbed-out drums and molten chords that serve as a perfect early evening warm-up.

Review: The second record in Soul In The Horn's debut 45 set delivers two electrifying reworkings that seamlessly blend genres. L3ni's 'My Mind is Open' transforms a moody jazzy track into an elegant house masterpiece. Meanwhile, Ian Wallace's 'Should I' infuses samba elements into a beautiful underground gem, resulting in a cool samba-infused house rework. Both tracks exude a vibrant energy that will undoubtedly get classy 7" collectors excited to have this. Review: Man/igance is the new alternate name for French producer Man/ipulate (Vincent Welwert). The Uprising EP provides four terrific examples of timeless techno music. The EP starts with the Belic & Mani remix of 'Revolution', which is a pulsating techno and electro track that ties in nostalgic 90s sounds along focusing heavily on being a prime slot dancefloor track. Also, on the first side is 'Fight Night', which is a classic Belgian influenced material featuring plenty of strong keyboard stabs and an addictive groove. For the B-side, you have the futuristic and classy 'The Falling' and 'Third Saturn Moon' who both conjure up some dramatic post Italo vibes along with some early strong trance and new beat vibes. Hand it to the French label Lumbago for continuing to release such great retro tracks.

A brooding progressive cut that glides through sun-upped vocal chants and shuffling percussive elements, the track is a veritable exciter, with Piano's vocals coming off especially charming. Dixon's signature piano line abounds in the breakdown, giving images of cocktail-glassed refractions of beachside fires backclothed by a deep blue ocean.

Review: Some 29 years after it first hit record stores, Nick Holder's sought-after Fruit Loops EP returns in remastered and reissued form. The long-serving Canadian was already four years into his career - and many 12" singles deep - when he delivered the four-tracker, which offers a funky and seductive take on deep house rich in disco and boogie samples. Check first the Chic-sampling disco house roll of 'Dance, Dance, Dance', before moving into the more complex (but not less attractive) 'Keep On Running'. 'The Message Is Love' does a brilliant job in turning choice loops and samples from MFSB's 'Love Is A Message' into heady house gold, while 'Clap Your Hands' makes merry with the stomping brilliance of Hamilton Bohannon's most famous tune ('Let's Start The Dance').

Review: 'Praise' was first released under the Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell banner in 2013 as a full package of CD-bound gospel-house transcenders. Part of the Gospel Music According To Joe Claussell series, the moment marked the apogee of the DJ and producer's stint in the world of edits and overdubs, after which he'd move into spiritual house musics of a less sample-based making. Now, however, we return to 'Praise' with two special edits cut to a limited edition 12" sampler, harkening a return to the form and a bigger box set in the series to come, a decade on; first we're met with Myrna Summers and her choir on 'So Much To Live For', which lays bare the holy-ghostly hooks and kick-clapped stamps; then there's a similar edit of Bishop Jeff Banks' 'Jerusalem', which whips out the Hammonds and sopranos for the B.

Review: Bassex Records emerged as a niche haven for electronica enthusiasts in the mid-90s, championing and, more importantly, blending genres like trance, breaks, acid and techno, the label's initial influence remained confined to the West Coast. However, as trancey breakbeats gained traction in Europe over the past 15 years, Bassex has ascended to cult status. Rebirth was label owner Mike Knapp and DJ Jason Blakemore (DJ Trance) and this compilation specifically gathers a few very desirable gems from three different releases by them and places them here. Bassex Selections is an important window into the label's enduring legacy and snapshot of the west coast scene circa 1994.

Review: We all know electro as a genre is themed implicitly around the idea of a robot apocalypse, but what happens when the humans rebel? Human Rebellion's latest 12" 'Alien Radio' goes some way to describing this imagined sonic insurgency, titularly from the POV of an alien onlooker who may or may not be orchestrating the entire thing as a proxy war. Opening with the whammy explosions of 'The 4th Industrial Revolution' and continuing the mad-maxxed charge with 'Human Mistake', it's clear that this is a rebellion in which the humans, too, have mastered the machine. Are we talking OG mortals or cyborgs here? Then comes 'Final Wave' and 'Alien Radio', narrating the head-on charging, terrasonic war tactics of our fleshly friends - their would-be coup de grace - before handing back to our extraterrestrial sponsor for a brief intermission of 4x4 airwaved freq-outs, followed by a final slipperer remix from long-timers The Exaltics.

All tracks here channel that sense of primal radical jank for which the Spaniards are known; kicking off with Topham's 'Dissolved In Ether', a set-starter of EBM-alyptic proportions (giant gated snare, tick; low metallic stereo skreaks, tick; monotone decepticon vocoder grumbles, tick), the palette is well maintained thereafter; Charlie's 'Everything Counts' dives headfirst into the oubliette with sparse dungeon synth strings and Italo vocal gates; Rufo's 'Palta Market' takes the first trance detour with a surprise swerve into a root-noted reverie; and Rambal Cochet helms up the B-sider's curio duties with the percussive fog-out that is 'Catalyst Powder'.

'This Feeling' has a catchy Street Soul feel, while 'Searos' mixes up ambient sounds and Spanish Guitar to evoke the essence of the White Isle. Closing with 'Astral Go Go,' really pumps the party in ways only he knows how.

Review: Falko Brocksieper is a cult German minimalist who was favoured by the likes of Craig Richards and his Tyrant project. This new EP from 20/20 Vision takes a deep dive into his back catalogue to unearth a gem that first arrived via Treibstoff Recordings almost 20 years ago in 2006. 'Frantic Formula' is a nice liquid cut with wispy sci-fi pads and rolling grooves for early evening warm-ups, while 'Outrun' gets more upright with its jumbled drum loops and gurgling bass. 'Covert Action' is another masterfully languid and elastic rhythm that layers up cowbells, wobbly low ends and silky loops that soon lock you into the groove. A welcome remaster and reissue for sure.

Review: Named after the classic Czech sci-fi animated film of the same name, veteran producer DIN returns as the nextmost focus of the Coming From Returning To label, who offer up a fresh reissue of his 1992 techno classic. Then five good years into the alias (DIN was formed in 1987), producer Pupka Frey began making his distinct brand of electro-disko as a personal exploration of futuristic and analog dance textures. This EP is an 'artificial' alt soundtrack to the movie, which was otherwise histrionic and over-funky for the tastes of most techno enjoyers. Highlights here have got to be the glassy 'B-Minis' and the opening 'Travesty' (the tune's ironically anything but).

Review: A masterclass in various examples of downtempo music, with each track on the double 12" showcasing Honne's pristine production, blending mesmerizing melodies with atmospheric soundscapes. Highlights include:'Viaggio' captivates with its enchanting melody, pulsating sub bass, and an air of mystery, while 'Longing' provides a tranquil interlude, with gentle ambient textures creating a sense of serenity. 'Come & Get' transports listeners with its evocative echoes and poignant tones. The album's cornerstone, 'Homage To Daylight', is an emotional journey. Its sweeping melody, melancholic undertones, and intricate IDM beats evoke a surreal and introspective atmosphere. With its blend of ethereal beauty and infectious grooves, this is a big indicator that LB Honne is a producer to keep an eye out for.

Review: Italian label Panick Panick! might be best known for carrying releases from the likes of Noha and Elon, but now they're welcoming the mighty Carl Finlow to the fold. There's always an electroid streak to the legendary producer's sound, but he's equally tipped towards the steady thump of 4/4 on this particular outing. That doesn't dilute the imaginative brushstrokes of his immaculate production one jot, best demonstrated on the sparkling 'Count On It' with its rich layers of modulating synth work. Noha offers reinterpretations of both original tracks on the B side, edging in a little more Euro techno functionality without dampening the flamboyant spirit of Finlow's production style.

Review: Split #2 presents a riveting showcase of techno talent from NE and Elias Sternin, delivering four tracks brimming with dynamic energy and driving beats. On Side-1, NE starts with 'Procrastination,' blending techno and electro elements seamlessly, supported by an acid line that adds a futuristic edge to the track. 'Lostrack' follows suit with its commanding presence, anchored by a strong techno foundation and bolstered by a serious acid motif. Flipping to Side2, Elias Sternin takes the reins with 'Dirty Spring,' a mysterious and atmospheric journey characterized by its building tension and expansive synth lines, creating a retro movie soundtrack of sorts. Closing the EP with 'Falso,' Sternin introduces elements of psy trance, infusing the track with pulsating rhythms and hypnotic textures that elevate it. Even though each track is of the more serious nature, there is a tongue in cheek 80's vibe that makes them come across as fun pieces of techno music.
