Review: Basement Phil's Basement imprints proudly drop their first release in the form of a remix compilation - a rather unexpected format but nonetheless enticing! This is a 26-track monster release by Phillip Wells aka Basement Phil who put out some of the most forward-thinking hardcore and jungle back in the early 90's when all of this fuss began! As the title implies, the compilation is a retrospective of sorts, where tracks from the golden era of UK rave are reworked and rebooted, placed next to contemporary sounds form the hardcore continuum. If you're a love rof the jungle variety then this is definitely worth a listen - essential!

Review: For Detroit techno there is Juan Atkins and Carl Craig, for dub techno there is Basic Channel and Rod Modell aka DeepChord. The Echospace label remasters a selection of tracks from a blitz of EPs DeepChord released in 2001. It's a rare opportunity to bask once more in the rhythmically-weighted and dissolvent ambience of Rod Modell and Mike Schommer early releases. All tracks featured on the triple marbled vinyl package either traverse well below the realms of charted sub-sonics or ethereally waver high above the clouds, secluded from dynamic tension, exploring subtle variations in pitched based harmonics instead. A must have for the dub techno lover.

Review: Minneapolis collective Food Pyramid return for a second release on the Disco Capablancas label and this one really is the personification of limited! A pressing of just fifty records exists and each come with hand painted artwork from Disco Capablancas compadre Andreas Golder, with the Berlin-based painter and sculptor adding his signature to each (it's probably for the best there are only 50 as Golder would have contracted Carpal Tunnel Syndrome otherwise!)In terms of musical content, Food Pyramid are on top form with "Knossos" as layer upon layer of hypnotic synthesis spill out of the grooves and it's easy to see why label and artist plumped for Gavin Russom for remix duties. The DFA's White Wizard turns in a trademark remix that turns an already psychedelically potent track into a motorik techno beast of spell binding proportions.

Review: Wormwood is the electro-acoustic duo of Christina Willatt and Andrew Wenaus, and they are based in London, Ontario.
"Much of the work for My Two Minds Become Air was written and recorded to accompany dance, and are in the form of vignettes. There is a special emphasis on movement, kinetics, orientation, and spatiality. Alongside movement through space, we wanted to conjure the massive expansiveness of the world outside ourselves at the same time as the seemingly infinite space of inward imagination. How might sound be a way of experiencing the ways that the imagination, the material, and the virtual each move through, intersect with, tangle and knot each other in delightful ways? In a way, we wanted to make music that acknowledges the ubiquitous supermodern abstraction of everyday life in the twenty first century."
The album My Two Minds Become Air comes in two distinct physical versions. The first is this Deluxe Limited Edition 12" lathe cut record version in an edition of just 66 copies. Each of these super high quality clear lathe cuts comes in a painstakingly modified, heavy weight recycled kraft-board jacket. On the front of each of these beauties is attached a hand made, two color inked Rorschach print on antique ledger paper sheets, and after mounting, each has been accented with hand distressed vintage Letraset rub on type. The band name is hand stamped, and the album title is typed out by hand on tiny strips of old, clear vellum paper...in two colors! On the back of each jacket is a corner mounted, double sided large sheet of hand written druggist prescriptions from a 125 year old Apothecary's ledger book...with additional parts of sheets mounted alongside it. The textual info on the back is also printed on equally ancient faded old papers. The first 50 copies of the lathe cut records, hand cut with care as usual by Michael Lawrence at Bladud Flies in Wales, UK, comes in its own vintage Deutsche Grammophon, polylined inner sleeve...the remaining copies in other vintage sleeves.

Review: The ON label was active in South Africa between 1987-1992, an era following the end of the Apartheid regime and defining the new sound of young black South Africa in the early 90s. The late 1980s in the rainbow nation was a time when disco was mutating into what was becoming known as Bubblegum: pop music aimed at the black population of South Africa. Bubblegum was a response to Western styles like disco and the fast spreading house music which originally came from the black ghettos of Chicago and New York. When the second Summer of Love took over the UK in 1988, house, and other electronic music styles conquered South Africa as well. DIY - do it yourself - a motto that had already appeared in the punk movement, lifted the young local scene to the next level.

Review: Placebo isn't the indie band you're thinking of, but rather a jazz and progressive rock band from Belgium that is headed up by the legendary keyboardist and composer Marc Moulin. This 12" is a three track collection of live tracks recorded way back in 1973 from a live TV performance the group made. 'Planes' is a busy one with spy-theme leads and dramatic trumpets next to racing rhythm sections. 'Only Nineteen' is a more mellow groove but one that still explodes to life on rousing riffs and synth work. 'Showbiz Suite' closes out in mysterious fashion and keeps you coming back for more.

Review: If you're going to produce a box set to celebrate your label's 25th birthday, you may as well do it in style. That was certainly Michael Reinboth's thinking when he put together this luxurious set marking a quarter of a century since the launch of his admired Compost Records imprint. It boasts no less than ten slabs of wax containing fresh remixes of catalogue cuts from a stellar cast of house, techno and disco producers (think Glenn Underground, Zenker Brothers, Francois K, Ron Trent, Moodymann, Mark E and Gerd Janson) and a handful of killer bonus cuts (most notably early Move D classic "Hurt Me"). In addition, the box also contains two mix tapes, a pin badge, bag and tons of stickers. Basically, it's a beautiful item packed full of quality music and label merchandise.

Review: Last year, East End Dubs ended his Social series after releasing 10 sought-after EPs in just under three years. "Social Part 2" is the second boxed retrospective of this work; while the first edition gathered together EPs one to five, this sequel boasts numbers six to ten. The 15 included tracks are all up to the prolific producer's high standards, offering an attractive late night blend of swinging tech-house rhythms, rich bass, spacey pads, intergalactic melodies and atmospheric aural textures. Review: Belgian DJ and producer Apashe is a decidedly unique artist, thanks to his fusion of bass-driven EDM with noticeably dramatic orchestral elements. It's as if an edition of Electric Daisy Carnival had taken place in the dark fantasy universe of Dark Souls: on 'I Killed The Orchestra', just five tracks cleverly process, twist and bend extremely tense movements of string and chorus, all while mixing in many a brosteppified growl and saw, recalling the looming boss-fight moods of some of Noisia's earlier work, but with added vocal features (Aline Pash, Sami Chaouki) that make for yet more sinister climaxes.
