Lil'Drama
Review: Fresh French label Attention Spin! flaunts the talents of the Parisian underground in its freshest incarnation. Currently turning their focus towards cosmic house music with hints of Italo and new beat, as well as aiming to prioritize dance music that uses vocals as an instrument, their first release here is a four-track EP from rising star DJ Dawidu. The likes of 'Une Nuit A Paris' and 'Mad Game' detail the wilder, undergrounder ends of after-hours nightlife in the Capitale de la Mode. 'Half On A Room', meanwhile, spans dub- and hip-house, while 'Lil'Drama' is the most vocal and catwalk-worthy of the bunch.

Review: Fouk, the Dutch production duo based in Zeeland, Netherlands, presents their latest EP, 'Mirage,' on Heist Recordings. This EP is an excellent blend of deep house and disco elements, showcasing Fouk's signature sound. The title track, 'Mirage,' is a driving main floor masterpiece, featuring sweeping disco strings and a hypnotic groove. 'Coffee' exudes positive house vibes, while 'Tapioca' brings in Balearic influences and a beachy atmosphere. The Elisa Bee remix of 'Mirage' adds an upbeat twist, and 'Abalone' serves as a smooth and elegant outro. Throughout the EP, Foux demonstrates their versatility and expertise in crafting deep house tracks with a distinct disco flair.

Review: Asad Rizvi, known as Silverlining, presents this white hot three-vinyl set showcasing his collaborative work with fellow artists. This collection spans the genres of minimal and tech house, tagged with elements of tech house, minimal, and breakbeat house. Some of the highlights include 'If You Were A Cat You'd Follow Me' by Appleheadz with its jazzy downtempo future jazz vibe, evoking a smooth and melodic atmosphere. Followed by 'In My Sky' (instrumental), delivering smooth melodic tech house adorned with jazz guitar and soft keys. Review: Flight Mode Records' fifth release offers a riveting exploration of futuristic techno landscapes with four distinct tracks from formidable artists. Innuendo's 'Reise Ins Zentrum Der Zeit' kicks off the first side with pulsating rhythms and a progressive build, evoking a journey through time with its driving energy. Following suit, Five Ten's 'Control' harks back to early 90s techno with a robust beat and bleepy melodies, giving listeners with its nostalgic charm. On Side-2, Mono-Tone presents 'Night Spirits,' an enthralling piece featuring a heavy acid line enveloped in ethereal echoes, accompanied by a subtle electro undertone that adds depth to the track's atmosphere. Closing the release, SPAC's 'My Galaxy Is Not Yours' injects upbeat energy with trance elements, inviting listeners on a cosmic voyage filled with pulsating rhythms and hypnotic melodies. Review: Bite Records returns with a thunderous EP from label head Phase Fatale, titled Love Is Destructive. Across four tracks, Fatale crafts a compelling journey through the depths of futuristic techno. The title track, sets the stage with its perfect blend of pounding techno rhythms and retro rave elements. It's a high-energy opener that grabs listeners by the ears and propels them onto the dancefloor with its relentless drive. 'Magma Driver' delves into darker territories, with menacing undertones and edgy motifs that keep the tension palpable. Its driving force and gritty textures make it a standout track for those craving a more intense sonic experience. On Side 2, 'Ambivalence' introduces industrial sounds into the mix, weaving them together with broken beats to create a futuristic soundscape that's both ominous and intriguing. Finally, 'Introjection' rounds out the EP with its techy vibes and subtle electro influences, providing a dynamic conclusion to this sonic assault.

Review: The Toy Tonics label has been one of the most consistently good house labels in the past decade plus. Those who see the label design in a record bin immediately recognize and respect the curation of the label by their owners Murk and Kapote. Electric Slide is the latest EP to get the seal of approval for mass release. Producer Kapote brings his high energy Balearic house sound to this record which also mixes in a bit of steady deepness to tracks like 'The Come On' (extended version). The title track blends a late-night disco groove to maximize the mood of the record. Do not sleep on the A-sides though as they blend in some classic Euro sound and New York 90s sounds.

Review: Longstanding French disco and house label Consortium Records, owned and run by time-honoured expert Phase, delivers a new EP by the relative upstart - but the no less talented - Trackmakers. 'Refoundation' rips up the floorboards, pries up the concrete and rebar and lays down four underground sound-pillars for a full-blown architectural revamp. Opener 'All Right' evinces such steadiness with a looping Rhodes, guitar, highpassed beat and laugh, laying the foundation for the eerie, roomy funk-disco haunter that is 'Ghostrack', the French-touched broken record 'Partey', and the brightly-lit, chord-womping, samply manoeuvres of 'Manevery'.

Review: Mosaic main man and peerless UK dub techno titan Steve O'Sullivan has paired off against Fletcher for this latest heavyweight 12". As ever the foundations are solid on the opener 'Passenger' - smooth drums and bass perfectly sit with one another, but this one really comes alive with the most impossibly subtle but inescapably uplifting little chords that suggest that no matter what shit you have going on in your life, things will be OK. It's a classic amongst many on this label. 'With That' is another tight, compelling and tech tinged dub roller with real bite and drive, and 'Treading Water' then blisses you out with its liquid chords and sense of endless infinite groove.

All four of these cuts are full-throttle, sweat-inducing bangers with kinetic drum programming and lithe synth work. 'Head Wrench' is riddled with acid that will melt minds and 'Builder' steps things back to menacing kick and snare combos with a saw-tooth line buzzing about in the background. Its sampler series is always a good indication of where it is at during any given season and now the tenth installment brings more party ready fun. Piero Pirupa kicks off with some big disco-fried loops and cooing vocals, Tini Gessler gets more gritty with a bumping tech house cut in the form of 'Do What You Want', CASSIMM and Bruno Blanc combine for the florid strong loops and edgy house beats of 'House Affair' and Tony Romera's 'House Y'a' is a sleazy throwback with real attitude.

Review: First released way back in 1982 but exceedingly hard to find ever since, Intrigue's 'I Like It' is a classic slab of Brit-funk era UK boogie whose lyrics playfully muse on craving cash when you have very little ("I really want your love but I'd rather have the money and I like it"). This Backactcha Records reissue features both versions from the original 12" - the EP-leading full vocal mix and the longer, more club-focused flip-side instrumental - as well as what appears to be a previously unreleased remix. This builds up brilliantly via drums and short rap sections before introducing the killer basslibe, pianos, synths and lead vocals. It's a fantastic and arguably more club-ready take on a much-loved but previously impossible-to-find Brit-boogie classic.

Review: The Very Polish Cut-Outs Sampler series continues to represent the party-focused arm of one of the most switched-on labels in Polish house music. On the tenth volume of the edit series we get no less than seven upfront joint to sink our teeth into, as Justyna S dices up dusty drums and funky guitar licks for the seriously infectious 'Oka Za Oko' and Zenit brings some big-room disco sass to bear on 'Dzisiaj Jutro'. The flip side sidles into deeper territory with the low-slung delights of Niko's smoky version of 'Na Jezykach' by Ka-ya-h. By the time we reach the final track - EXPO 2000's dreamy downtempo joint 'Fantazja', the pitch has slid down even lower and we're positively kicking back in the backroom with distinctive styles unique to this most esteemed of labels.

The grooves are nice and loose, the percussion is organic and fresh and the vocals, which re-sing a real classic, solar to the heavens next to mid tempo beats. Review: Before I Die have been putting out some high-grade leftfield delights from respected operators like Bernardino Femminelli, Tungusku and most recently Sewell & The Gong. Now it's the turn of Klangkollektor, indulging a collection of hazy dub excursions which sit somewhere near Balearic splendour, piano-charged melancholy and isolation tank meditation. In the dub tradition the approach is consistent and evenly paced, but it's certainly not aiming for any kind of typical Jamaican sound. Instead, there's a gentle introspection to the melodic content which gels perfectly with the spacious approach to mixing, unfurling across four sides of wax for an album you can just melt into.

Review: The Future Sound Of Sardinia follow hot on the heels of London, fixing yet one more cog to their prospective time machine with a new V/A compilation. 'Centuconcas' welcomes one contribution each from Claudio PRC, Agi Thoriu, Andrea Ferlin, and Jarpp. Each artist is caught exercising a deeper-into-their-own-pysches dub flavour than usual; PRC's sonic epigraph 'Uraki' is an impressive demonstration, unconsciously driving its sticky chording ricochets unto semi-conscious ears; Thoriu's 'Aressi' follows up with a neat fusion, yielding something between ambient future garage and a deep tribal entrainment; Ferlin's 'Hydra' is far more muted and operational in mood, veering more on lo-fi tech; and to close, Jarpp summons his inner MPC for 'Su Passu Turrau', taking its namesake from a traditional Italian line dance (but in actuality, the track sounds like nothing of the sort, unless we entertain the idea that this is the soundtrack to a line dance beamed in from the future...)

It's subtly epic, charged with sweeps of orchestration which tease at a big drop to come. 'Flame' has a slightly more intimate, heads-down approach, but it's no less detailed and dynamically produced. 'Igako' explores some pop touches in the context of a bigger room sound which still holds fast to the slick tech house framework and 'Ask The Universe' takes a more delicate approach with pattering percussion and melancholic piano which will set any set off on a sentimental trip.

Review: Ben Liebrand aims squarely for the nostalgism that is the dance-centric turn of the 1980s, albeit with a modern twist, on their latest three-track EP version of 'Happy Station' by A Fun Fun. The latter artist's original was first released in 1983, and was noted for its strange windscreen-wiper sound effects and stuttering, gated new-wave beats, making for an indelible fusion of breakdance and Italo disco. Liebrand's version steers the ship in a radically different direction, adding much phatter lows and telephoned-in vocal moves, creating a far further-forward-driven sound.

Review: Lomsk's Alexander Johansson and Mattias Fridell made their Blueprint Records debut at the start of last year with their 'Geometriska Strukturer' EP; now they're back with a new four-tracker, 'Marvatten', which continues to prove their talents to the tune of gritty, submersible, viscous techno. The Swedish duo here proffer myriad toothy new ones, best among which are the sonar-blooping 'Sejnfall' and the low-whistling, hindewhu-reminiscent 'Styrfart'.

Review: Edoardo Barbi is an alias of Gledd, the label head at Saint Wax, co-owner of Radio Mundo Records and a prolific producer who hails from Italy but is based in Mexico City. For this new EP, he taps into his love of 70s church funk and classic gospel and serves up a quartet of emotionally intense cuts that each tell a unique story. They all have their own moods and subtly uplifting grooves and are defined by the famously meticulous production style of Gledd. When you want to make the dance floor move in a different way than usual., these four cuts should be your go-to.

Side 1 begins with 'Sweat,' a high-octane disco anthem featuring a heavy piano lead that drives the track forward with relentless energy. With its killer bassline and stomping beats, it is a peak-time banger guaranteed to ignite dancefloors. On Side 2, 'Particules' takes a deeper dive into the disco realm with an Italo house-inspired bassline. This track exudes a sexy and futuristic vibe while maintaining a retro charm that harkens back to the golden era of disco. With its infectious groove and sultry atmosphere, it is sure to captivate listeners and keep them moving until the early hours. This EP is guaranteed to keep the disco fans dancing.

Review: Dagobert & Kalson deliver the third instalment of their serial Stellar Mode project, which sticks out like a rogue planet amid a sea of drab and unremarkable stylistic orbiters. This four-track cosmic fulguration consists of two tracks by each artist, and is notable for its ultra-glossy action-packed ambient breaks content; they've just done something wonderfully extra to the sound here, treating each element like exoplanetary objects of study and refinement. As Kraftwerkish sequences and ambient soundscapes collide with planetary ring systems of bass and plucksynth, what's not to love here?

Melodic electro-acid tempered by vocoder lines (the 'Vox Mix'), speedy 4x4 trance ('Supernova') and deeper-down-the-rabbit-hole tabfests ('Above & Beyond'). The title track kicks off and pairs his playful patterns with a Dubsetters rhythm and some nice sunny and soothing melodies from Trommie aka Don Drummond Jr.. After the horn-led, organic and unhurried instrumental comes a dub that is fleshed out with a little more echo and is a sublime bit of roots. A second version adds another perspective to the original and we already look forward to hearing more from this project.

Review: Since launching in 2018, the Belpaese imprint has delivered a string of must-check EPs featuring re-edits of old Italian songs and instrumentals. It's a bit of a niche pursuit, but given the country's contribution to dance music culture over the years one that makes total sense. Volume ten in the series arrives with two sweat-soaked cut-jobs to enjoy. 'Ancora Un Baccio' is a quirky and eccentric Italo-disco number that boasts both rubbery slap-bass (including some energetic soloing) and surging electronic bass, alongside suitably camp lead vocals and heady vocalisations. 'Un Sogno Per La Testa' is a bit more Balearic minded, with the shadowy scalpel fiends making merry with what sounds like a holiday-ready 1980s pop song full of glistening guitar licks, jazz-funk bass and unfussy beats.

Review: Erol Alkan's 'A Hold On Love' originally appeared at the top of his debut 2013 EP Illumination, and now he's ushered it out of hibernation to make a pair of new versions which nudge the endearingly catchy, big room techno stylings in distinct but compatible directions. First up is the 'dyna-mix', which works around bugging b-lines and dubby shimmers for a restrained, subtly psychedelic affair. The 'trip-mix' meanwhile whips up some dusty garage house breaks, snappy 909 claps and hooky stabs to get the heat turned up in the dance good and proper. It's a fine example of the Midas touch Alkan brings to club music even when revisiting former glories.

Of the many projects he turned his talent to, Get Fucked found him studio sparring with Nils Hess around the turn of the millennium on labels like Eukahouse. Review: Oscuro Femenino is the first release for both Desiree Falessi and Influencia Records, an EP is blending of up-tempo styles like electro, techno and trance. 'Inaccesible' is a powerful, driving, keyboard driven anthem, te main synth line harkening back to classic electroclash of the late 90s - think International Deejay Gigolo Records - with a darker, new wave underlying influence as well. 'Desmadre' is more of an 80s influenced electro that has more of a street breakbeat to it but still sounds fresh and new. For the second side, 'Matrix Dance' is primed for dancefloor destruction. This very catchy track builds to a dramatic crescendo. Lastly, 'I've Been Watching U' ends the record on perhaps our favorite of the bunch. This spacey track finely walks the line between electro and breaks while the bassline draws you closer in. Overall, a great debut dance record for this artist and label! Looking forward to hearing more!

Review: The shadowy Edit & Dub crew don't talk about their releases, so it can be difficult to ascertain whether the tracks they're showcasing are long-lost originals, or new edits of ridiculously rare records. Either way, the label's latest EP features versions of some seriously hard to find treats, starting with a fine 'extended disco instrumental' of Sanctuary's 'Disconnect', a fine disco-boogie jam from 1980. They then deliver a (we think) previously unreleased 'extended disco' mix of Willie J & Co's killer 1976 disco-funk gem 'Boogie With Your Baby'. On the B-side we're treated to two takes on the mysterious 'Familiar Time and Place' by Uknown Tapes: a 'Chicago Mix' which sounds like late 80s Windy City acid house smothered in spacey deep house chords and intergalactic electronics and the mid-80s techno-tinged 'Detroit Mix'.

The pair cook up a fine globally-minded club trip that comes with another label return, this time from remixer Jamie Paton. The original 'Picha' first started as a sketch in 2016 then became a demo in 2019 now finally arrives on wax. It's a raw percussive workout with razor-sharp snares and plenty of cowbells. He makes his mark again to that end with a new one on Especial that brings more of his modern-day ethnic styles to the driving breaks of techno following outings on the likes of Coymix and Space Lab and sets everywhere from Fabric to Berlin's Warning parties. This one kicks off with 'U 15' which is a busy blend of shimmery timbres and sharp perc, spaced-out pads and psychedelic synths that are ever on the rise. More trance overtones define 'Glint's Pursuit' and 'The Elevated Place' is slick and sleek, ascending and always rising. The central number is 'Analog Dream Plants', which commands a uniquely well-rounded, full-bodied sense of space (it's so organic, even the hi-hats have bass) while reflecting the more repititious elements found in nature by way of lilting two-tones, analog synth ostinati, and, muted vocal murmurations. The quality is kept up almost effortlessly, with dreamy transitions into spacey electro from both Gimmik and Moy, all while Naqara Liquid indulges an equally lovely, but toothier, IDM interpretation.

Review: Zeta Reticula (Uros Umek) is among the wide cream of today's atmospheric breaks and electro producers, carrying on strong with a career that he's kept steady since 2000. Since the mid-2010s, the Slovene star has hopped from label to label, signifying a restlessness that matches the writhing weight of his music. 'The Beryllium' is yet another EP to capture Reticula's preference for unrelent, commanding a unique sense of space and weight that flaunts a true sense of art. Listened to in one way, 'Need To Orbit', sounds like a functional acid jam, but its pitch-perfect use of reverb and EQ renders it gestalt, nearly convincing us that the track was direct-outputted from the aux port of an interplanetary war machine and not a stack of analog synths. On the other hand, the closing remix from Sound Synthesis is nice and cascading - gushing, sheathing sounds abounding - contrasting to Reticula's opting for judderings and impacts.

Review: Roggtrax is the latest of many alter-egoic endeavours by Matthieu Roggwiller (aka. Mattrogg) since 2020. His latest 12", 'The Docksides Boy', is a minimal, surfy disco wave-braving - an instrumental dance project homing in on the defined edges of early '80s "Anglo-Saxon disco, blended with sub-Saharan African disco, new wave and art pop of the time. Building off its own coinage - 'electropical' ambience - the sonic palette here is smooth, rhythmical and oded to the guitar, with casual disco hookers like 'Strato' and 'Finger' both in name and in content recalling the image of fingerstyling while overlooking a Mediterranean sundown.

They may be of dubious origin, but such is the purpose of the disco edit form: to draw attention to the craftmanship of disco over its more surface-level aesthetic signifiers. That said, we do know of a few sources: Sabata's 'Man For My Lady' (1980) is the opening highlight, and though very subtle changes have been made - in the form of various brightenings and fattenings - this record is more than enough to keep our affective responses to this label's Discotechnical assembly line going.

He heads down a minimal path here with 'Dem Swing' a kinetic mix of dry hits and well swung kicks and tripped-out FX. 'Mind Designer' then gets deeper, with more lovely hits this time landing on tight drum patterns that are detailed with whirring synths and chopped-up vocals. The flip side is taken up by 'Trouser In The Heat', a more manic cut with dense percussive layers and edgy synths that never settle and always keep you guessing. Review: Alton Miller's previous appearance on Rawax's Motor City Edition series, 2019's Amazed, was a genuine treat, so a follow-up is well overdue. What's on offer appears to be a mixture of sought-after cuts from his archives and previously unreleased material. In the former category you'll find 'Love Inside (Detroit Dub)', a soul-soaked chunk of warming and spacey Motor City deep house from 2002 and the subtly Latin-tinged, Ron Trent-style melodious warmth of 2009 cut 'Higher'. Elsewhere, 'Chari' is a gorgeous chunk of summery, sun-soaked deep house positivity rich in colourful chords and kaleidoscopic lead lines, while 'Mocasays' offers a near perfect blend of raw, tech-tinged grooves, sustained chords and sparkling piano riffs.

Review: Who remembers Johhny D? Assuming it is the same one, he had one of the most standout tech house cuts of the second wave some 15 or so years ago on Nick Curly's influential Mannheim label Cecille. Here he joins up with Filou on Pleasure Zone for a trio of smartly designed and slick deep tech cuts. 'Esie' is one to zone out to in the dead of night, 'Static' has a more suspensory and edgy feel with its unresolved loops and 'Digging' shuts down with the best synth work of the lot - deft lines, neon hues and curious chords all add colour to the icy beats.

Review: Stereo:type is keeping busy with a number of releases already lined up from the young and auspicious label. It is UK artist Risk Assessment that has been behind the first couple and is again back in action here with number three. This one kicks off with a slightly deeper disco cut that has a seductive vocal and rousing chords then 'Dreamz' is a nice blissed out roller with magical melodies bringing the richness. 'Someone Like You' is denied by the voice of the one and only Barry White - his buttery baritone riding over loop and funky drums and bass and 'Power' then brings a touch of house to close out.

Review: Rhythm N Vibe treats us to four different and equally brilliant garage cuts here from four different and equally brilliant artists. Marc Cotterell opens up with the slinky and dusty drums of '96 Is Back' powered by a rasping bassline. Jason Ward then brings some fresh 90s sounds with a neon baseline and diva vocals on 'The Meaning' while J Erazo keeps it deep and paired back on the sublime 'The Pulse' which is a real late night warmer. Paul French then layers up nice fresh and bumping drum funk on his lovely number 'Jump' (unreleased dub). There is lots to love here on a very useful EP.

Review: Chicago-born but Sweden-based producer Amir Alexander is a master of intimate drum programming. He has a raw sound that operates in the gray area between house and techno and is in fine form once more here. 'Don't Play Around' has brilliantly booming and elastic low ends full of bounce and a classic diva vocal to bring the emotion. 'Stockholm Syndrome' then gets its heads down and hurries through funky drums and rattling techno percussion. 'How You Make Me Feel' (Bldg 7 WMD mix) again flips the script with a slower beatdown sound embellished with pixelated synth patterns and a yearning female vocal. 'Locust Army' is maybe the best of the lot - mind-melting techno synth work over quick-stepping drums for maximum club impact.

Review: This with their ear to the tech house underground will already have come across Creature, who keeps things in house once again here with a self titled EP on their own self title label. The music is the business as ever, with the opening salvo 'Long Ass Tripz' pairing slapping drums and crisp tech textures with twisted bass and acid touches. There is no let up on the funky robot-tech of 'Lil Tripz', either, with its twanging riffs and almost Prince-style vocal. Last but not least is the edgier tech funk of 'BBQ Bacon Tripz' to complete this most irresistible dancefloor offering.

Review: B2 Recordings is back with a second release that is every bit as good as the first. This one comes from Reece Johnson and is a joyous mix of uplifting disco sounds with a timeless edge. 'Comin' In Hot' is a lose-limbed opener with percussive edgy and low-slung drums topped off with dazzling chords. 'Glass Heart' then brings the funk with more expert looseness and this time some hooky and soulful vocals. 'Sup America' keeps the party rolling with instrumental disco brilliance and a Spanish vocal to add real heat while 'Feelin' The Beat' and 'Got To Be Free' close out with higher tempos but no less class.

Equilibrium (Peachlyfe remix)
Review: Newa's latest EP, Equilibrium, presents a wicked journey through four distinct techno realms. On Side-1, 'Dtrance Love' emerges as a powerhouse, delivering strong linear techno infused with an abundance of energy. Its trance-like qualities are propelled by a persistent bassline, casting an eerie and futuristic atmosphere. Following suit, 'Electro 404' takes listeners on a robotic, sci-fi-inspired adventure, showcasing Newa's versatility within the electro genre. Flipping to Side-2, the title track 'Equilibrium' explores a fusion of electro and breaks, intertwining trance chord progressions with subtle hints of acid. The result is a great blend of genres, underpinned by a weighty bass presence that commands attention. The EP concludes with the Peachlyfe remix, which feels like a sonic experiment unfolding in a science lab. This reimagined version adds a fresh perspective, injecting the track with new life and dimension. Overall, Equilibrium EP helps push Newa's reputation as a boundary-pushing artist within the techno landscape.

Review: Steffi's Klakson label is one of the few real creams of today's electro landscape; inviting only the very best of the best artists, few of its contemporaries can really say they've managed to achieve the same feats in the same space of 20 years or so. The latest V/A EP to grace their rolling stocks, 'Weaponized Fuel On The Acid Playa', looks ostensibly like it could be homage to old-school UR or its many Dutch copycats, but in sound, it hears back completely differently, feeling like a future electro hellzone in which all manner of evil mutant experiments remain on the loose. By far the best-produced electro EP we've heard in recent months, you won't be disappointed by the likes of Shcuro's 'Feel' or Driven By Attraction's 'Weaponize'.

Review: Viels returns with Il Quarto Respiro, an immersive journey into the depths of techno. Released on Semantica, Viels' explores a range of sounds and atmospheres. Highlights included on the first side, 'Alienazione,; a percussive powerhouse that delivers metallic textures and driving rhythms, setting a formidable tone. 'Collasso Mentale' takes listeners on a journey through outer space with its sci-fi-inspired soundscape, evoking a sense of sinister alienation that permeates the track, On the flip side, 'Nuvole Bianche' continues the exploration of outer space, enveloping listeners in a mysterious and otherworldly atmosphere. The track's wicked undertones and alien textures create an intense sonic experience that captivates the imagination. Closing the album is 'Lontano Da Casa,' a heavily intense audio punishment that pushes the boundaries of techno with its pulsating beats and hypnotic rhythms. Viels demonstrates his ability to create tension and energy, leaving listeners spellbound until the very last beat.
