Overcome/Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)

Overcome (9:00)
Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:22)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Trelik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

Review: US producer and DJ Sepehr returns with 'Diaspora Cocktail' for Planet Euphorique, breaking from his own imprint Shaytoon for a hair-down foray through cheekier-side of scene-setting techno. The five bits on this new 12" hark back to the titling traditions of the early 90s, with alternate mixes with denominations like 'XTC Mix' and 'Freak Beat Mix' stealing the show. Sonically, the tracks allude to everything from New York electro to movie soundtrack tropes, nicely bridging the gap between ritualistic drama music and sumptuous atmospheric dance.

Review: There is no messing with this new EP from The Final Experiment crew in Germany. They tap up DD 3 for two tracks of stylish, impactful techno that locks you in from the off. It's 'Fences' which does so with its tightly woven kicks and bass - punchy but fluid, they are overlaid with dancing synth arps that bring light and soul. 'ATCX' is then a minimal cut with frosted synths fizzing about the mix over jangling chords and deeply buried kicks that grow ever louder in the mix. It's a thrilling and fresh sound for sure.

Review: Here is the third and final chapter of the 'Systema Naturae' series on Berlin-based 012, with fresh deep techno visions from newcomers such as Daniel(i) from Belgium (Whispering Signals) who ventures into foreboding and murky territory on the off-kilter journey of 'Carabus', and there's the return of Greek producer Alex Tomb who gets into some hypnotic minimal techno on 'Paradisaea'. Elsewhere, Leipzig-based Kontinum pushes into full mental overdrive on the strobing cut 'Octandria' and finally you have the collaboration between Mary Yuzovskaya and label head Claudio PRC titled 'Marmor' which perfectly nails that ethereal Sound Of Rome vibe.

Review: The sophomore release on Miami's Alchemista comes from Translate (Teo Pellegrino) and Joel Pulso, two rising Argentinian producers who join forces for some seriously mental techno excursions on 'Cuadricular Dreaming Pannel'. The first side of this essential 12' features the hypnotic interplanetary minimalism of 'Specific Angles' reminiscent of classic Sleeparchive, followed by the majestic and cyclical title track which this time takes its cues from Jeff Mills' unmistakable Axis sound. Over on the flip, the title track is treated to a surefire remix by the inimitable Oscar Mulero, head of Pole Group, who manages to inject more dancefloor dynamics into the arrangement, accentuating the spacey elements underpinned with a stronger rhythm department while staying true to the vibe of the original.

Review: It wasn't so long ago we were writing about the joys of BVDUB's Fumika Fades, a new double pack in February that sunk us deep into moving ambient soundscapes. Now the Bay Area dub techno titan Brock van Wey is back once again with yet another album - he dropped plenty of them last year too so is clearly in a mad creative patch. Slowly Shifting Lakes comes in multiple formats, this one being a double CD. The ambient here is coarse and textured, fizzing synths stretching out over skittish rhythmic frameworks before sinking into calmer waters on cuts like the escapist 'Searching For Glowing Shores.' Another triumphant album for sure.

Review: Nthng is an indomitable name in the world of what one might call 'deep lo-fi house'. The mysterious and prolific techno producer released his debut album, It Never Ends, on Lobster Theremin in the mid-2010s, when the genre had taken by the internet by storm with its Leckeyesque rave nostalgia and unbridled emotion. Nthng's first music marks a point before the scene merged with the international DJ circuit, when many lo-fi house musicians became superstar faces. But not Nthng, who still retains an integrity through anonymity that few artists can be said to have so successfully kept up. A reissue and relisten to the album now actually sheds new light on the project; while classic deep cuts like 'Soms', 'Touches' and 'Eternal' are the epitomes of what we remember the Nthng-core sound to be, there are also curveball cuts of the harder-hitting variety on there, such as 'Last' and 'Unity'. On reflection, this is a delicate and precise album, one that doesn't treat the production of deep dance music with so much as a hint of unsubtlety.

Review: Yoni is the rather accomplished pair of Thomas Melchior and Tim Hutton and they roasted this cult classic album of what was then called intelligent dance music back in 1994. It was a CD-only release back then but now gets a proper pressing across three slabs of wax It is much more percussive, raw and textural than anything you would associate the smooth minimalist Melchior these days but it perfectly fits in with the current trend for mixing up several sound worlds at once. There are breaks, cosmic electro, mad techno and even hints of house along the course of the eight expertly designed tracks.

Review: DEAS drops his first EP of the year on his own Bau Muzik label. It is another reminder that he has a high-quality take on raw techno which has made him one of the more exciting producers out there. 'Praxis' has a superb pent-up tension with the unresolved synth loops shimmering over the icy hi hats and rooted drums. 'Black Form' is darker, with more textured clap chatter and bleeping synths. 'Elements' cuts loose with spraying and frazzled lines and edgy drum loops and 'Prefix' will then get dancers banging the walls with its streamlined techno intensity.

Review: Hermit in a Rave Cave is one of some 30-odd alases for prolific Dutch studio nerd Legowelt. He debuted the project in 2022 and after a fine first EP, he follows it up with a second superb self-titled effort on the ever-excellent Clone Jack For Daze. As always with Legowelt, this is machine-made music with real soul and nice dusty aesthetics. It kicks off with some deep, Detroit tinged techno bleeps, more gritty and muggy lo-fi drum track 'Central Meekness' they the glistening cosmic melodies of 'Digitize Your Daydream' sink you into a wormhole. There's a terminator feel to the retro-future sounds of 'Do You Look Like Me', subtle uplift to the trance chords of 'Flow Network Ooze' and pure star gazing bliss on deep house jam 'Whisking A Dream With Satans Trident'. This is some of his best work in years.

Review: Drumcode's A Sides series has been a great source of contemporary techno potency and there is no signs of it slowing down yet. This is the second part of the 11th volume and it has three fresh names. Veerus opens up with 'Lights On Me' which is a dark tune with a tense energy and celestial chords keeping you in suspense. Ramiro Lopez then offers the more loopy and hypnotic 'Yo Mas' with its hooky vocals bring an exotic feel. Anna Reusch shuts down with a flat footed stomper that will get your jaws clenched on 'Deeper.'

Review: Fans of his Detroit techno veteran Gary Martin's previous releases on labels like Motech, KMS and Exceptional will not be disappointed by this latest offering from one of the Motor City's most underrated talents. The full-length LP Lagarius shows off Martin's knack for blending funk, soul and Afro-Latin influences, with a faster-tempo'ed techno sound. It's heavy on the detail, with arguably only trained ears being able to pick up on all its backing samples and intricacies (that's us, of course). So take it from us; from the sultry swang of title track, to the dystopian grit of 'Situational Awareness', you won't want to miss this one.

The Beginning (7:02)
Review: Drumcode don't just do huge-room heaters, you know. 'When The Lights Go Down' is a strong case for the label's darker side, seeing to a generous three-track contribution from Neapolitan producer and DJ Roberto Capuano. The artist eschews an overindulgence in detuned trance saws for reese basses here, preferring to revel in the wealths of space offered by repeated kick drums and large reverberative spaces - as opposed to high-endy, sizzly sounds. The title track is the star, thanks to its riveting vocal line and guard-throwing rhythmic messups, which occur at the same time.

Their carefully crafted sound has artful values and a real focus on melodies as well as heartfelt piano chords and original vocals. 'Who We Are' (feat Felix Raphael) kicks off with sound-tingling vocals and tenor pianos that are elevated by the soaring drums. The slow-burning approach also defines 'Alright' and late-night melancholy of 'Dark Sun.' On the flip, careful arps and pixelated melodies fall down the face of 'Last Call' for a real EP highlight.

Review: Canada's Aquaregia comes of age with a 20th EP that continues in its own tradition of serving up emotional techno rollercoasters. Nicola Dal Sacco is behind this one with opener 'Wirrwarr' layering in bright tartan chords to deep linear drums. 'Gelato' takes on a more undulating form with soft acid lines changing shape throughout and 'Parapiglia' layering up more deft acid, progressive melodies and serene synths. 'Linea' flips the script with a slow-motion dub cut for late-night star-gazing. This is well-crafted techno with a real emotional impact.

He's well informed by the classic Chicago and Detroit sounds and brings that to his own always atmospheric work. Here he arrives on Dutch label What About This Love with four more mindful cuts of classy backroom action. 'Multi Final' has hissing hi hats turgid chord stabs over rolling drums, then 'Intergalactic' releases the pressure with more lazy drums and claps, sweeping chords and wispy melodies. The cool rolling rhythms return for 'Leggera' then 'Regardless Of Everything' is a kaleidoscope of deep house colour.

The six track 'Third Ear' EP is, nevertheless, a step up of sorts as it's her debut EP for Nina Kraviz's Trip label, following a single contribution to the label's Psy-trance collection. It also gives her a chance to present a spread of styles and flex her versatility. Among the highlights are the deep, vocoder-enhanced voices behind the tough-edged 'High Heels Long Legs', and the speedy, breakbeat-peppered 'I Can't Believe (You're Real)', but if you appreciate your techno stark, powerful and hypnotic, you'll enjoy it all.

Review: Phara's Falling Forward EP is about just that - leaning into a still techno breeze and letting it sweep you off your feet. The title track is an expertly economical yet dynamic sound with panel-beaten techno loops, bulky drums and subtle synths lashing about for extra edge. 'Order Disorder' brings more intensity with its urgent and paranoid synth loops front and centre while 'Gate1' is another streamlined banger a la early Skudge. As with so many techno EPs, there is a nod to the Jeff Mills school of interplanetary minimalism on closer 'Cerulean Blue.'

Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Review: The sixth album from JK Flesh, Sewer Bait is a slo-mo, lo-fi, noise-inflected journey through the dirtier, grittier side of techno. The opening track, 'Soaked to the Skin' is a corroded, corrupted chugger - pulsing demonically, brushing against increasingly rougher textures, this is a track where everything is obscured yet each component comes together to create a groove that is intensely hypnotic. The titular track 'Sewerbait' feels more closely aligned to the industrial techno tradition - slamming drums meet searing synths to create a track that is powerfully alluring. The final track, 'Washed Up', is driven by a relentless, propulsive core - like an engine revving up, this track feels ready to take off. JK Flesh has a masterful skill for making the rough shine and highlighting the delicate amongst the rubble.

Review: The latest release to come from rising Dutch label, Ninih, is Eversines' second solo album project, Dwang. An evocative sonic exploration of the themes of inner struggles and personal growth, Dwang traces many sides of Eversines' sound, touching on dreamy ambient, breaks, acid techno and trance over the course of the album. Kicking things off with the delicate, melodic ambient track, 'Bridge', like drifting down a slow moving river, with a hand outstretched to feel the flow of cool water below, we enter seamlessly into Eversines' soundworld. On the flipside of the first LP, 'Resist' is perhaps the ultimate dark-prog track, full-bodied and driving, this track strikes the perfect balance between moments of softness and heaviness. 'Fog' could perhaps be described as glitch-prog - dissolving into tumbling drums and pulsating, growling synths before re-entering with renewed force and flecks of ear-opening, leftfield sound design. A fantastic second album from the quickly rising star.

While the deep and woozy touches we've come to expect are present - albeit in smaller doses than usual - what catches the ear is the fluctuating TB-303 bassline, the restlessly jazzy but driving drums, and the overall sweat-soaked feel of the whole thing. You'll find even more acid wizardry on B-side opener 'Sanskrit Body Rock', a hypnotising machine jam, while 'Ask It Acid' is a pleasingly stripped-back and mind-mangling jack-track.

Review: Since emerging at the beginning of the last decade, Berlin-based Spaniard Kwartz (real name Mario Campos) has become a reliable source of dark, atmospheric, clandestine techno. He specialises in combining dense, thickset grooves with mildly creepy melodic motifs, minor-key riffs and bags of unabashed energy. All those sonic traits can be clearly heard on his latest EP, which marks Campos's first vinyl outing for two years. We're particularly enjoying the panicked urgency of 'Fast Focus' and the entrancing heaviness of 'Impulse', where weirdo electronics and echoing melodic loops catch the ear, but all four cuts are undoubtedly tried and tested peak-time treats.

Review: Stuttgart's Luca Daniel Schwarz returns to Dax J's Monnom Black with an astonishing take on modern dub techno, featuring six futuristic grooves. LDS is an artist that stands at the cutting edge of technology, influenced by artificial intelligence and digital innovation and the Digi Spa EP extensively showcases this aesthetic. On the A-side, you've got the direct attack peak-time onslaught of sturdy DJ tools like 'Nord Dab' or 'Gl03'. Over on the flip, there's the pounding minimalist terror of the title track and the strobe-lit frenzy of 'Fuend Formen' which will definitely have you reaching for the lasers.

Review: The reissue of Surgeon's classic 1999 album Force & Form brings back the unique sound of the Birmingham techno maestro. With every track from Electric Chicken, Movement, to Prowler hearing a thorough remastering job from the one and only Matt Colton, this album is renowned as one of the true inception points of the Birmingham sound: cold metallics, industrial noise, intense rhythms and unrelenting energy. Considered a turning point in the artist's wilfully scalpel-precise career, Force & Form established Surgeon as a true master of techno.
