(Hey You) The Rock Steady Crew (instrumental version)
Review: Record Store Day Edition: Amidst a busy touring schedule, Torpedo Boyz trio Daisuke Isomichi, Holger Schumann, Ken Steen have been coaxed back into the studio for their first new release since their last album Return Of The Auslanders was issued back in 2010. And we have Record Store Day to thank for this wonderfully delivered cover version of "(Hey You) The Rock Steady Crew", the classic theme tune by the groundbreaking late 70s Bronx street dance troupe The Rock Steady Crew. Being true fans of the original breakbeat style, the Boyz deliver an authentic interpretation while adding a funky twist in their distinctive Torpedo style. Pressed on 7" golden vinyl in a glossy Torpedo Boyz picture sleeve.

(It's A) Rat Race (vocal) (4:19)
(It's A) Rat Race (instrumental) (4:14)
Review: Athens of the North's Euan Fryer is not the only collector and selector who believes that the Leaders' obscenely rare 1971 single '(It's A) Rat Race' should be considered a genuine deep funk classic. In fact, it was deep funk specialist Keb Darge who first brought the record to the attention of DJs and dancers in the UK in the early 2000s. Happily Fryer has tracked down the band and got their permission to reissue their sought-after classic. Formidably funky, the A-side version features fantastic group vocals rising above a bed of hazy horns, bustling drums, warm bass and razor-sharp, Blaxploitation style guitars. The accompanying instrumental take is superb, too, with a variety of woodwind and brass solos - often drenched in reverb - replacing the group's fine vocals.

Review: DeRobert & The Half-Truths from Nashville, Tennessee are back again with an album we would best describe as straight up, and here's the title track on 7" vinyl titled '100 Yard Dash'. On this track, just like many others on the forthcoming album, Adams sings about one's inner demons, the state of the world, minding your own business and life's struggles - with influences of James Brown and Curtis Mayfield. Released on G.E.D. Soul Records, which is run by DeRobert Adams' rhythm section - namely Nick DeVan (drums) and Dave Singleton (bass).

Review: A Merle Travis blues standard, as laid down by the one and only BB King in 56. A homage to the coal miner with strong clear lyrics and vibrant horns, the original was one of many breakthrough's BB made in the 50s. It was also futureproofed for Belgium's popcorn sound with a bold brass version that's loaded with so much swing you almost forget its deep deep blues. Records like this are what 45s are made for.

Review: Jamaican Recordings get in on the special Record Store Day 2021 action with this limited edition 7". It also marks 20 years of the record label and finds Jah Floyd telling the story of its beginnings and the people involved including the legendary producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee. Lee passed away in late 2020 which makes this release even more poignant. The texturally dense a-side has gauzy guitars and plenty of effects weigh down the heavy, slow motion dub, then on the flip comes a dub version which is more driving and just as lyrically potent.

Deep House
2DeepSoul - "Home"
Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana - "Deserted"
Review: We can't remember the last time we came across a 7" single of straight-up deep house. Certainly, it's a novelty, though there's little novel or cheeky about the two tracks showcased on this diddy, coloured vinyl release from Spain's Minuendo label. 2DeepSoul's A-side, "Home", is effortlessly melodious - a warm, rich and enticing blend of shuffling rhythms, swirling chords and the kind of blissfully electronic melodies that make you want to dance with your eyes shut. There's a more organic and quietly soulful feel about Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana's flipside effort, "Deserted". Blessed with a delicious double bass line, bespoke keys and a whisper of Motor City techno (in terms of the electronics, at least), it's a sublime chunk of sensual deepness.

Review: Vanucci and Gazeebo's Soul Flip guise cracks its editing knuckles for a second roll of the party dice and the results are every bit as funky as you'd expect. Edwin Starr's 1968 super-funk belt-out gets supersized with a rolling big beat break while Aretha Franklin's formidable rhythm & blues stomper "A Change" is given a subtle thrusting for modern day floors. Absolute dynamite.

St James Infirmary (2:26)
Review: Jazzman's Juke Box Jams series continues unabated to offer up those one-shot killers from the tangled history of jazz, R&B and soul - essential nuggets worth repeatedly popping dimes in the slot for. Here, it's the turn of Bobby Bland's "36-22-36", a heavy swinging and insanely catchy blast straight from 1962. Bland's voice is a perfect balance - cool as ice, but cracked around the edges - while the chorus line chants don't need a minute to get under your skin until you're singing along. "St James Infirmary" on the flip is a more downcast affair - one to drown your sorrows to, but certainly not the bottom of the bottle, as those hard stepping horns attest.

Instrumental cuts, both "777" and "Sex Machine" rattle and hum with a gorgeous dusty distortion and loose, playful groove. "777" is more a rock-funk freak out complete with some amazing walking bass runs. "Sex Machine" covers Mr Brown in a very interesting way, giving James's section to the Hammond organ. Wonderful.

Review: Trad Vibe drops another dinked 45 from the French jazz funk group of the 1970's whose core members included Alain Mion (Piano/Rhodes) and Alain Gandolfi (drums, percussion) who recorded several albums and singles originally for the Sonodisc label. The title track was sampled by Jay Dee, Madlib and MF Doom amongst others and has a solemn hip hop tempo groove with dramatic drums and some gorgeous Rhodes tinkering offset by a scatting lone female vocal. On the flipside you get the uptempo "Devil's Dance" which is an alternative version of the jazz classic they released called "Mary Et Jeff".

Review: This desirable 7" single brings together two of the many highlights from the bulging catalogue of New Orleans soul singer Ernie K Doe. On the A-side you'll find 1961's "A Certain Girl", a sweet rhythm and blues number from the dawn of the soul era that ticks all the right boxes (strong lead vocal, jaunty piano lines, lolloping groove, question-asking female backing vocals). Arguably even better is the better known "Here Come The Girls", a later K-Doe recording that was produced by the song's writer, Allen Toussaint, and originally appeared on the artist's eponymous 1972 album. We all know it, of course, but it still remains a sing-along soul staple.

Revisited by the consummate selectors at Wah Wah 45s, last year saw the re-release of his album Piano and this year they've got an even bigger treat... These two stunning, previously unreleased, cover versions. Walter Murphy's "A Fifth Of Beethoven" is a pounding exercise in key stroking and p-funk bass that playfully flirts with the classic riff before dropping it in with a bold climax. Meanwhile on the B, the jazz standard "Mercy Mercy Mercy" gets an equally vigorous disco-funk seeing to. Faultless funk; this is not to be missed.

Transformation Vacation
Review: Milwaukee, WI always seemed to be ahead of the curve when it came to great music, especially with the proto-punk/art/noise-rock bands that morphed into just about every cool or at least noteworthy '77-'83 indie band in town. The Lubricants were no exception and one of the best of the bunch. They formed at the Dawn of Punk and were the most ferocious band in town. They went through multiple line-up changes, but it all centered around founder and mastermind Leroy Buth. In 1980, they booked time at ATA Studios in Chicago and cut the "Activated Energy" b/w "Transformation Vacation" 45. Two killer punk sides with perfectly in-the-red production. Both songs ooze some of the most searing guitar leads committed to vinyl since "Raw Power". The record came out on their own Relative Records that same year. It was the only release during the Lubricants original run. The original single has been very tough to find and fetching big money for years. In the late '90s, the inclusion of "Activated Energy" on a volume of the bootleg compilation series "Killed By Death" and a poorly done counterfeit pressing drew even more demand for the record. A collection of Lubricants studio material was self released by the band on CD, which also appeared as a very limited Italian vinyl pressing. Rerun presents a high quality reissue of this Milwaukee punk classic in a limited pressing of 500 copies on thick, black vinyl. The audio has been remastered and it comes in a glued pocket sleeve with a double sided insert including rare photos and ephemera plus liner notes by GLENN REHSE of Plasticland.

and laptops to create their full length introduction to the world, chock full of Latin, afro, funk and psychedelic sounds that will
challenge you to sit still without snapping your neck. Here they drop their cover of Manu Dibango's 'African Battle', which is an
up-tempo, break-riding banger which has been played constantly at b-boy jams worldwide for the last few years. Over on the flip
is the bands own 'The Sexican' more deep fried Latin funk fo that ass.

He's still making heart-breaking anthems in 2016, and this collaboration with The Soul Investigators band for Finland's Timmion imprint is as beautiful and moving as the material way back in the Detroit days. They're at it again here with regular collaborator Carlton Jumel Smith. The good news is that "All The Way", which features the combined talents of guests Tyler Daley and Kaidi Tatham, is every bit as good as anything on their superb 2017 album "The Offering". Review: Two tracks taken from the new self titled album on Strut from guitar legend Dennis Coffey, the man responsible for the B-Boy classic and million-copy selling ''Scorpio''. Dennis was also a member of the Motown Funk Brothers backing band and was key to bringing heavy wah wah guitar to soul and R&B during the late 60s. Stones Throw artist Mayer Hawthorne assists on the A Side, covering a George Clinton penned track with Mayer's vocals sounding soulfully sweet. On the flip Milwaukee outfit Kings Go Forth get to grips with a new composition, a fantastic dancefloor shaker with funk rock overtones and heavy on the Hammond organ. Tough stuff all round - Dennis Coffey is back!

Good Loving Care
Review: Cincinnati's Matthews operated as a session musician during the 70s, working closely with James Brown confident Charles Spurling. Sadly he only ever got round to releasing two 45s of his own. And here's your chance to own one of them; "Allen's Party" is a firing slice of uptempo deep funk. An unrelenting beat, right horns and well-paced lyrics to allow the big riff to cut through... It will still kill a party like it did over 40 years ago. "Good Loving Care" is a much more languid affair. All dreamy and spacious, it resides in the finest pastures where soul and funk make sweet sonic love. You'll come for the party but stay for the care...

Gallium (5:43)
Iron Ferrum (5:42)
Review: When launching Jeff Thompson and co-producer Eqwel's Amalgamated Metals series of seven-inch singles earlier in the year, Sacred Rhythm chief Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell warned that a number of releases would be needed to, in his words, "harden the strongest solder possible to resist the corrosive nature of tasteless dance music". Release number two is certainly sturdily soldered, with A-side 'Gallium' delivering a forthright blend of galloping, metallic drum hits, hissing cymbals and spooky, otherworldly synth sounds. 'Iron Ferrum' is strikingly different, with distant-sounding metallic noises disappearing underneath a thick, beat-free coat of bubbly acid lines and immersive ambient chords.

DJ Fett Burger - "Track 1" (3:47)
DJ Sotofett - "Track 2" (3:31)
Review: This latest 7" from Sex Tags Mania offshoot Amfibia is something of a family affair. It was conceived and produced to celebrate the Fett brothers' recent tour of Japan, and contains a track each from the Norwegian eccentrics. As usual, it's hard to pin down exactly what they're up to - they do have a tendency to gleefully switch between styles at will - but both tracks are superb. DJ Fett Burger's A-side contribution puts oven-warm deep house motifs and laidback jazz breaks through a dub filter, resulting in something hazy, tropical and seriously saucer-eyed. In contrast, Sotofett's flipside excursion sticks closer to the dub script, effortlessly fusing an off-kilter, bass-heavy rhythm and ricocheting percussion hits with crystalline synthesizer melodies.

Fenerbahce Heat (1:41)
Review: The Excursions crew have prepped another solid release right here, a bunch of glorious Turkish funk edits by the mysterious Halal Cool J. We love the name and all, but it's the cuts that we're vibing too, especially seeing as we're big into our 70s Turkish culture here at Juno HQ; just take a look at our charts and you'll find everyone from Baris Manco, to Erkin Koray and Erkut Tackin. From "Visne Nektari" to "Fenerbache Heat", you'll be glad to know that gear is 100% club-proof and utterly in line with the quality of that 70s material... it just has a little more oomph to its beats now.

And The Beat Goes On (dub)
Review: Fatty's dub reversions never fail to impressive - his cover of Ol' Dirty Bastard requires repeat reloads every time - but this hook-up with fellow Mr Bongo artist Hollie Cook takes things never level. Taking the classic 1980 one-hit-wonder from The Whispers and giving it a royal dub swing, Fatty and Cook have created a superb cover that takes the original disco funk number into a whole new pasture. Unmissable.

Animal Attraction (DJ C Ondtu version)
Review: Everybody's favourite nu-skool junglist DJ C hooks up with his man Zulu for a killer 7" on Community Library. Taking a bare bones post jungle template something similar to Kode 9's infamous "Backward" riddim with a metronomic hi-hat allowing the lumpen gabber kick/snare pattern to twist itself into a highly developed steppers pattern over invisible subhits and sticky bass. A proper tasty little slice of steppers riddim methodology.

Review: Raised within the city limits of Chicago, Dextah developed a love of all things hip hop with his interest soon turning into production acumen. Dusty and buoyant, this new 7" features two instrumental pieces that hover somewhere between Shadow and Sixtoo suggesting that the world of trad-breaks hip-hop has a potential new star. Dextah Fletcher!

Review: ** Repress for the breaks dons ** The long awaited new Visioneers Limited Edition 45 produced by Marc Mac of 4hero is here at last on BBE offshoot Omniverse. No messin' here as Visioneers go straight for the funk jugular with two dope versions. On the A-Side a version of The Shadows classic ''Apache'' gets flipped by Visioneers remake of Johnny Pate's B-Boy bomb "Shaft In Africa". Heavy horns and bongos aplenty - this is just wanted the doctor ordered. It's limited, it's hot, go get it!

Flutter
Review: ***B-STOCK: Damaged/ torn sleeve, otherwise in excellent condition***

It's only been a year since we last heard from Arab Strap via the excellent and typically downtrodden As Days Get Dark. Their first full-length album in 16 years, and the only LP since 2016's reformation - one might guess catalysed by the realisation that in a world of rampant distrust and unease, people need dour observations - Aphelion is a brand new two tracker following on from that release, and, unsurprisingly considering this is one of the most inimitable bands on the planet - sounds very much like the Strap.

The title number is the rockiest affair, cymbals and drums crashing atop a central hook that feels made to bore a hole directly into your conscious. Flip it to find 'Flutter', a more sedate and reflective piece that swoons and croons instrumentally, while spoken word lyrics hypnotically unfold.
