Review: While it's been 13 years since the tragic passing of one of the greatest rock and metal vocalists of our time, the legacy left behind by Ronnie James Dio serves as unwavering testament to the man's aura, character and prowess, even up to his final recordings which make up this collector's box set. Featuring the final four albums recorded under his own name, all housed in a sideloading box with newly created art on five 180g coloured LPs (1996's Angry Machines on Halloween orange with black marble, 2000's Magica on transparent blood red and black smoke, 2002's Killing The Dragon on transparent yellow with black marble and 2004's Master Of The Moon on electric blue with milky clear marble, plus the rare Electra single on a cobalt blue 7", the epic collection coincides with the upcoming release of Dio: Dreamers Never Die; the first authorised career-spanning documentary centred around the iconic frontman.

Notes: From the outset, KMA Machine's goal was to create the most flexible analogue upper octave pedal ever yet produced. Based on a highly refined and improved version of the Shriek circuit from KMA's venerated MOAI MAEA pedal, the MANDRAKE brings an even more robust and present upper octave to the sonic table. By combining that upper-octave might with a versatile, yet highly intuitive user interface, the pedal provides a ton of killer tonal options in a very modern and pedalboard-friendly package.

Octave up pedals (as used by so many legendary performers including Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Josh Homme, Billy Corgan, Jack White and so many more), can really give added bite to your sound. But often, many of these fun tools can be untamed and lead to nasty clashing overtones.

With MANDRAKE however, KMA didn't want to just make a one trick pony octave up device. The powerful and ultra-fast tracking Shriek circuit was expanded on with its edgy and fuzzy character that's reminiscent of many of the best vintage octave-up devices. To do this, a 2nd order Low-Pass Filter was introduced, a TIMBRE and individual Mix controls to KMA's well-regarded circuit to make it way more versatile in a single pedal. Let's look at those cool new things in more detail.

The FILTER control helps to tame your upper harmonics, as well as to improve tracking, letting you achieve unhinged, cutting and shrieking mayhem when the control is fully turned all the way to the left. While turning the knob in the other direction gives a more mellow and blooming synth-like texture. The FILTER section is also very useful for tailoring the upper octave effect to different instruments and pickups, where getting the right tone is not a "one size fits all" equation.

In addition, to enable the octave voicing in MANDRAKE to be sculpted exactly to your own personal taste, the TIMBRE control defines the amount of fuzzy gain present in the upper octave. This allows you to perfectly blend in the pedal's tonality with the rest of your signal chain. Turning the control fully counterclockwise, gives a slightly crunchy and percussive tone that's ideal for melodic arpeggio enhancements. While cranking the TIMBRE knob fully clockwise will transform MANDRAKE into a crushingly saturated doom-hammer, instantly ready to wreak havoc with each power chord you throw at it!

Topping off the features, the DRY and OCT+ controls allow the dry signal and effected upper octave to be mixed independently, for precise tonal balancing. This is especially handy when using MANDRAKE together with other dirt pedals or when you just want to retain the natural body and attack of your instrument.

Erica Synths Modulator is an advanced modulation and pitched noise source with focus on rhythmic (but not limited to) compositions in mind. It features two identical syncable to the BPM LFOs/noise sources with selectable morphing waveshapes. LFO frequency can be manually adjustable, as well as they provide frequency divisions and multiplication in Sync mode. Each LFO has two outputs- main one and secondary one with adjustable phase, so you can create evolving modulations. Furthermore, LFOs can be linked to work at the same frequency and the first LFO has built in VCA to control output signal amplitude.

Notes: Further pushing the boundary of clock-defined pedals, the latest entry in Old Blood Noise Endeavors' BL series is a Phase Repeater, in the process making a genre entirely of its own.

Phase repetition takes the modulation of a phaser and applies it to the realm of time, creating a completely unique sound and more like delay or reverb than its namesake phaser. First used in the OBNE Dweller pedal, the BL-52 Phase Repeater represents a new spin on the sound, with simple controls including a Clock slider that enlightens the timing of everything in the pedal.

At a point, describing sound feels like describing time: the fourth dimensional perplexity of it all! Of course, this makes sense in that time being intermingled with sound and frequencies only existing over a period of time, whatnot. We spend a lot of time thinking about all-pass filters, you and I. How they pass all frequencies, but at different times. How this, in the digital realm, can create a phaser or a reverb, depending on how much memory you allow it and thus, how much of the fourth dimension it's playing with at any given... well, time.

BL-52 is what we call a phase repeater pedal. It's an effect we stumbled upon in our Dweller pedal development, living somewhere between phaser, delay and reverb, as it creates a series of repeats both unexpected and pleasing. It's digital trickery to do something quite unfamiliar and once you've bonded with it, is irreplaceable.

The BL-52 Phase Repeater is solely focused on that effect, with the Clock control setting the timing of the entire system: the sample rate that determines signal fidelity, the timing of the phase repetition and the speed of the LFO that shapes the diffusion of the repetition.

In short, it is an effect that does not require exactness, but rather openness to where the repetition will lead you.

Review: A long awaited, bumper six album pack of music and voice assembled by Delia Derbyshire of Radiophonic Workshop fame, and broadcast on four shows between January 1964 and September 1965, collectively known as Inventions for Radio. These experimental, longform shows were conceived by playwright Barry Bermange and were made up of the voices of callers-in, speaking on four themes: dreams, the existence of God, life after death and ageing. The participatory nature of these shows deviated massively from the radio status quo of the time, and the participants were selected to eschew the standard received drawl of most 60s radio presenters.
The music and editing was done by Derbyshire, whose avant garde sonic settings lend the audio an enigmatic, spectral quality. Although she was not credited for her contribution, nor were the broadcasts available commercially, they still developed a cult following. Silva Screen now presents the four broadcasts in their entirety, each on a separate LP, with two LPs of bonus material, and a booklet of detailed notes by producer Mark Ayres and David Butler of the Delia Derbyshire Archive. An elusive and essential landmark of 20th century sound collage.

Review: Les Claypool is of course best known for spearheading Primus, the twisted funk metal pioneers that put slap bass at the top of the agenda. As a virtuoso musician with the most inquisitive of minds, Claypool naturally explored many other musical avenues beyond Primus' oddly-angled jams, and this box set does a damn fine job of summarising those exploits through the lens of his Prawn Records label. Spread across seven LPs, we're treated to remastered versions of projects such as The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Colonel Claypool's Bucket Of Bernie Brains and The Fancy Band. You're as likely to wind up in weirdo jazz hoedowns as funked-out rock music, but in between these niches there are so many other undefinable surprises in store.

The voltage of each CV input can be varied by plus or minus two octaves depending on the switch and the potentiometer of each channel. Transpos uses precision regulators: for example if we increase by a fifth with the switch on "+" we reduce it by a fifth when we pass on "-".

Transposer:

The 1V/o CV input will influence each of the three channels. By turning the CV potentiometer you can globally increase or decrease the transposition of the three channels at the same time.

Perform a variety of mixing and sound design duties ranging from subtle brightness and clarity adjustments to low-end rumble removal, boosted low-pass filtering and sweep EQ.

In the default tilt mode, turning the control knob clockwise simultaneously boosts treble and cuts bass. Turning anti-clockwise boosts bass and cuts treble. These boosts and cuts are pivoted around the mid-range. With the control knob at 12 o'clock the frequency response is neutral.

With Baxandall high-shelf mode enabled, turning the control knob clockwise past 12 o'clock introduces and gentle high-shelf EQ weighted around the upper mid-range. Turning the control knob anti-clockwise results in a wide high-shelf cut with subtle bass and mid-range adjustments.

Patching the channels in series allows for radical sound shaping and band-pass responses. Each channel provides up to +/- 8db of low and high-frequency gain control, summing into a low noise output stage. Hot input signals over 15vpp are saturated by active Zener diode clipping.

Julia is able to produce mild smooth chorus, to seasick vibrato and everywhere in between. With controls like Lag, Dry-Chorus-Vibrato Blend, and selectable analogue LFO wave shapes, you are able to dial in all types of classic and unique chorus/vibrato sounds not found on traditional chorus pedals.

In 1999, spectrographs picked up an unexplained sound emanating from dark ocean depths. The source of the sound was untraceable. While most scientists attributed it to an iceberg dragging the ocean floor, some sceptics began to understand the true source of the sound. Julia, the water demigoddess. Crying from the deep in a chorus of melancholy hymns, she remains to be uncaught but the pursuit for her is unceasing. Walrus has captured a fraction of her powers in the Julia Analog Chorus/Vibrato.

As a standard BOSS compact, the SY-1 drops into a serial pedal chain like any other stomp. But with the send/return loop and dedicated mix controls, it's also possible to blend one or more pedals in parallel with the SY-1's synth voices. For example, you can patch drive pedals in the loop, and then send the combined output to mod, delay, and reverb pedals for overall processing. The send can be used as a direct out as well, enabling you to route synth and guitar sounds to separate destinations.

Enhance Performances with Real-Time Control
The SY-1 offers a numbers of ways to make your synth performances even more dynamic and expressive. Pressing and holding the pedal switch sustains the last-played synth sound, allowing you to jam with regular guitar over the top. The dark, lush, moody tones of the ever-popular PT2399 IC provide an out-of-this-world experience. Our take on this classic pedal pushes the chip's limits so you can explore all the gritty elements drifting at the edge of long delay rates. It already outperforms other bucket brigade style echoes, but just to be sure, we added 2 stomp switches, Blast and Warp.

The "Squared" version of the pedal is tailored to live guitar and keyboard performers. It has all the features of the original plus:

Dark, rich sounds with the analogue vibe of a tape echo.

Uses the PT2399 IC, a bucket brigade style emulation. This IC has 16-bit sampling for 30-300 milliseconds. After that, the sample rate goes down in relation to the delay length. This results in artifacts and noise being introduced into the audio for weird, cosmic, psychedelic sounds.

4 knobs: Feedback, Mix and Rate, Blast Amount. The Mix is a wet-only control that attenuates the amount of delayed signal in the signal chain. The Rate controls the number of repeats in an organic-sounding way.

Featuring a refined implementation of the overdrive circuit first heard in the limited-edition Gold version of this iconic compressor pedal, the unique germanium distortion found in the Philosopher's Tone 2 delivers smooth top end and rich midrange response, tailored to perfectly match the characteristics of the optical sustainer driving it. In addition to Volume and Sustain controls, the Philosopher's Tone 2 features a parallel clean Blend knob that allows musicians to mix their instrument's original tone with the compressor/sustainer effect when the Grit circuit is bypassed. This mixing technique restores natural pick-attack and allows clean settings with extreme sustain to remain dynamic and musical. When the Grit circuit is engaged, the Blend knob is automatically bypassed, circumventing the compromises of the original unit and imparting a colourful distortion to your sound in both Germanium and Silicon modes. This nonlinear diode-clipping can range from subtle overdrive to overflowing distortion, all without unwanted feedback. A Treble control located just before the master Volume provides 6db of cut or boost at 2kHz for fine-tuning the frequency response of the effect. The Philosopher's Tone 2 features true-bypass switching and internal 18V power rails for maximum clean headroom that is ideal for use with hot pickups, active bass, synthesisers and other line-level sources. Runs on 9VDC.
