Review: Last year, Japanese imprint P-Vine reissued Positive Force and Denise Vallin's eponymous debut album, a "holy grail" of turn-of-the-80s soul that originally appeared in ultra-limited numbers on a "private press" LP. This 7-inch single brings together two of that album's undoubted highlights. On the A-side you'll find "Everything You Do", a sugary-sweet chunk of soft-focus soul in which Vallin's strong, heartfelt vocals rise above a slow-dance-friendly fusion of laidback grooves, twinkling electric pianos chords and sleazy '80s sax solos. Flipside "You Told Me You Loved Me" is a slightly more up-tempo affair with rousing horns, eyes-closed guitar solos and a strong, sing-along chorus complimenting the band's slick grooves and Vallin's off-Broadway vocals.

Review: When you consider the stellar cast of A-list jazz players involved in its creation, it's perhaps not that surprising that original vinyl copies of this 1972 post-bop classic are surprisingly hard to come by. During the recording sessions, saxophonist Clifford Jordan was accompanied by, amongst others, Roy Haynes, Kenny Durham, Wynton Kelly and Don Cherry. As this timely reissue proves, all were in fine form throughout, with each musician being given a chance to shine across the four stretched-out tracks. We're particularly enjoying the laidback shuffle of opener "Vienna" and the bustling, hard-wired closing cut, "872" (the stereo separation in the mix is particularly impressive), but the whole set is pretty darn faultless.

Review: Of all the many cutting edge and pioneering records put out by the iconic Black Jazz label, Doug Carn's is one of the most well known and widely acclaimed and now it gets a reissue on Japan's P-Vine. Although everything he did turned to gold, this one reached even more impressive heights with Doug himself at the helm of the composition on the 1973 release. It sees him integrate Jean Carn's majestically soulful and heavenly vocals deeper into the music which was so stylishly delivered by trumpeter Olu Dara, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Ira Williams. The standout track will always be the rapturous 'Power & The Glory' but all the rest are frankly just as good.

Review: In 1979, vibraphonist and percussionist Billy Wooten joined forces with jazz guitarist Steve Wakely to put together a brand-new studio band. Some months later, they'd recorded their sole album, In This World, a suitably conscious affair that mixed narration from the softly spoken and thoughtful Wooten with inspired, partially improvised musical jams that sat somewhere between jazz-funk and jazz-fusion. Original copies of the album are now hard to find - or at least change hands for significant sums online - so Japan's P-Vine label has decided to reissue it. Rich in mazy vibraphone solos, jazzy guitar solos, and infectious jazz-funk grooves, the album is a delightful obscurity that's well worth a place in your collection.

Review: P-Vine is in a particularly strong run of form right now and that keeps up with this deep cut funk classic from US group Soul Expedition as led by guitarist Freddie Terrell. This is the only studio album the band released way back in 1972 but its still carries weight. The tracks are bristling brews, heavily packed with percussion, wriggling rhythm sections and flute lines that soar to the skies. An original is hard to find and expensive if you do, so this lovingly recreated reissue complete with full artwork is a must buy for funk lovers.

Review: In 1988, a Japanese art student called Naoki Asai gathered together a few of his more musical friends and recorded "Aber Heidschi", his sole album. Released in limited numbers as a private-press vinyl LP, the set has gone on to become something of a cult classic. Listening to this first ever reissue, it's easy to see why. Simultaneously dreamy, hallucinatory and super-sweet, the set's 12 tracks deliver a particularly dewy-eyed and tactile take on the increasingly psychedelic indie-pop sound then popular in Britain and the united states. Asai's Japanese vocals are particularly alluring, in part because of their boyish sweetness, while the accompanying music somehow manages to sound both extremely lo-fi and joyfully jangling.

Review: This is the only album by mysterious Lui Williams (Lui), released in 1978. He and his band used to play at Maui Surf Hotel along Kaanapali Beach in Maui, Hawaii. (The hotel appears in the front cover.) This is a Hawaiian album, but his original "Oh, Oh (Think I'm Fallin' Love)" got popular among Soul / AOR lovers, and now the rare original LP is traded at a high price among collectors. It includes another his original "My Lover", Hawaiian cover of jazz standard "My Funny Valentine", Hawaiian traditional "Hawaiian Wedding Song" and so on.
