Review: Last year Skee Mask put the Ilian Skee Series on hold in order to release the brilliant "Compro" album on parent label Ilian Tape. Here he presents the second undeniably dancefloor-focused ISS EP of the year - a robust and forthright floor-tracker full of what the Munich-based composer calls "unstoppable fruity brain benders". It's certainly a vibrant collection of cuts capable of setting the pulse racing, with highlights including the mind-mangling analogue electro/techno/breakbeat fusion of opener "Juug", the deep two-step techno skip of "RZZ", and the IDM influenced shuffle of "Slow Music". Arguably best of all though is the teak-tough analogue electro wonkiness of "Play Ha".

Deep House
  1. Rise March Mellow (6:23)
  2. Highway Daydreams (7:13)
  3. Domingo Nap (4:01)
  4. Sharp & Shallow (8:40)
Review: Under the clever Even Tuell alias (say it quickly out loud if you don't get the gag), Paul Rollmann has been a valued member of the Workshop family since 2009. Here he returns to the Hardwax affiliated deep house imprint with his first release of any sort for almost five years. Rollmann is in fine form throughout, opening with an alluring combination of crunchy, off-kilter machine beats and Music From Memory style ambient melodies (the wonderfully melodious "Rise March Mellow") before opting for a dustier and more lo-fi sound on pastoral techno workout "Highway Daydreams". "Domingo Nap" is a wonderfully spaced-out journey into trippy ambient territory awashed with delay-laden electric guitar motifs and fuzzy sub-bass, while closing cut "Sharp & Shallow" is a defiantly left-of-centre romp through glassy-eyed electro.

Techno
  1. Transparent Ray (6:23)
  2. Solarized (5:23)
  3. Opposite (5:10)
Review: Spanish techno titan Oscar Mulero leads from the front with his new label Warm Up, which deals in anything but early hours techno. Here he offers up four powerful tracks of heavy drum grooves that are designed to generate maximum destruction on the dance floor. "Transparent Ray" is a rooted groove with freewheeling synths riding up and down through the mix to hypnotic effect, while "Solarized" is all about punishing drum programming and expertly linear techno. "Opposite" offers something different - a more stripped back and reserved deep techno exploration with shady corners and suspenseful synths. Quite the start.

Topinambur (12")

Techno
  1. Topinambur (6:27)
  2. Blymon (5:34)
  3. Cassave (6:41)
Review: Earlier in the year Robag Wruhme broke his long streak of singles by popping up on Pampa with his first album in eight years, a melodic, atmospheric and eclectic affair that largely steered clear of the dancefloor. "Topinambur", his first EP since, is more club-focused. The A-side title track sets the tone, with Wruhme working a raw, moody and sleazy techno groove hard while cleverly playing around with the arrangement. Over on the flip, "Blymon" is a sweaty, mind-altering and basement-bothering loop jam with just the right amount of peaks and troughs, while "Cassave" is a brain-melting chunk of peak-time sleaziness rich in buzzing riffs and drum machine cowbells.

  2. Drop It (6:44)
  3. Heavyweight (7:05)
  4. Overdub (5:37)
Review: In our opinion, there are few labels out there quite as consistent as Craigie Knowes. The Scottish imprint has been on fire of late, and this label debut from Tone Dropout and Klasse Wrecks regular Darren "Dawl" Woollard is another surefire winner. There's a sweaty, saucer-eyed feel to the EP, from the acid-fired breakbeat madness of throbbing opener "Let's Go" and the accurately titled insanity of "Heavyweight" - all chopped-up rave-era riffs, booming bass and skittish drums - to the mind-altering acid psychedelia of hypnotic closing cut "Overdub" and the warehouse-friendly 1990 breakbeat hardcore skip of sub-heavy smasher "Drop It". In other words, it's a reliably charged-up set of misty-eyed workouts.

  2. Ignacio - "Organa" (remastered) (7:37)
Review: Belgium's vital Music Man is having a great time celebrating its 30th Birthday and rightly so - over three decades it has been at the forefront of the European techno scene. For the next in its limited series of coloured vinyl releases, they look to Motor City master Robert Hood and Dutch legend Ignacio aka Steve Rachmad and reissue two of their best tracks. The former's "And Then We Planned Our Escape" from 2007 is a timeless dub techno masterclass while Rachmad's "Organa" from 1997 is a high octane, high tech, soulful glider to carry you into the next dimension.

  3. Play It As It Lays (8:02)
  4. Tortuga (5:31)
Review: Boasting a suitably psychedelic cover and locked grooves at the end of each side, Midland's first single for three years is an undeniably mind-altering and - by his previous standards - admirably experimental affair. It sounds like it was inspired by a combination of old Radiophonic Workshop combinations, cutting-edge modular techno and the kind of melodic, analogue synthesizer-driven outings that have become the hallmark of Hans-Peter Lindstrom. Perhaps the most obviously club-ready cuts are the arpeggio-fired melodious techno trip "Play It As It Lays" and the metallic, off-kilter modular clank of opener "The Alchemy of Circumstance". That said, the EP's other two cuts - more experimental compositions with less dancefloor intent - are just as impressive.

  3. Luke Hess - "TDY" (Aubrey remix) (6:50)
  4. Deep'a & Biri - "Pilgrim" (Tripeo Journey mix) (5:48)
Review: Jaunt continue their 10 year celebrations with another strong cast of remixers taking their vision of techno even further out from the point of origin. Markus Suckut is up first, remixing AWOL with a blissful, almost Balearic leaning version that places piano chords front and centre. BNJMN takes on Artefakt's "Wanderings", digging it into the undergrowth for a gritty but submerged beatdown. Aubrey brings a little of his wildstyle charm to Luke Hess' "TDY", all bouncing drums, raining acid and delightfully wonky chords. Then Tripeo rounds things off with a boisterous take on Deep'a & Biri's "Pilgrim", using clattering drums and evocative atmospherics to create an epic trip.

Review: Pretty Sneaky has managed to keep all names and IDs hidden so far despite putting out such essential minimal, house and techno cuts. The 5th release is another gem that anyone who has heard Midland play recently will recognise. Track 1 is all warped synths and ambient bird sounds tethered to a superbly supple and rubbery drum groove. Track 2 sinks into watery dub territory, with underlapping grooves and aqueous synth sounds all sinking you deep under the surface. These are weird and wonderful tracks that sound like little else out there.

Review: Detroit duo Aux88 always danced to a different drum than their Motor City peers, developing a ludicrously weighty trademark sound that put massive, mind-mangling analogue bass and gut-punching electro beats at the heart of the action. "Direct Drive", a 1995 release that has long been hard to find (hence this much-needed reissue), is one of the best examples of their distinctive sound. The title track (side A on this edition) is little more than a raw, thrusting bassline, snappy machine beats, spacey pads and occasional Kraftwerk samples, but it's brilliantly floor-friendly and brilliantly executed - Detroit body music for those who like their club cuts sub-heavy. Elsewhere, "Aux Express (DJ K1 Mix)" is a bouncy electro jam and the short "Bytes" tracks are wonky vocal samples for creative DJs.

Review: Bedouin Records enlist Thomas Feriero for some new music from his current industrial period. The former tech house man doesn't shun his roots altogether, laying down functional grooves but haunted by darker and noisier textures and tones. "Onto Duat" is clunking and intense, "Take Nothing With You" is lit up by serrated synths and oversized hi hats tethered to monstrous break beats, while "Change Your Mind" is a sludgy, paranoid cut for marching crowds. "Riot Patrol" is the best of the lot, with slow motion heaviness and a real sense of dystopian atmospherics locking you to the floor.

  2. Daniel[i] - "A Moment Of Confidence"
  3. Cyspe - "Morning Revelations"
  4. Atomic Moog - "Floating Motion"
Review: Lowless commence the "Confluence" compilation series in fine style with some subliminal trips through the deep techno landscape, guided by four accomplished travelers. Dycide's "Raijin" opens up the record with a brooding piece heavily tipped towards the low end and tastefully minimal in its execution. Daniel[i] has a little more bite in the rhythmic dynamics of "A Moment Of Confidence" while maintaining the subterranean mood of the release. Cyspe takes things slow and spacious on "Morning Revelations", a beautifully hazy rendition of the distant end of the dance, and Atomic Moog drops a more pronounced groove and spooked out pads over the aptly titled "Floating Motion" to round the record off nicely.

Review: Since debuting in 2015, Yoshinori Hayashi has peddled his wares on a variety of labels, Jheri Tracks, Disco Halal and and Smalltown Supersound included. Here he returns to the latter label with a pleasingly heavy four-tracker. Opener "U" is an intergalactic electro workout laden with nasty, deep bass and glacial electronics, while "Cs" is a wonderfully lo-fi take on acid house that jacks harder than DJ Pierre after 24 cans of Red Bull. Over on the flip he layers ghostly vocal snippets, alien chords and rich bass over another jacking drum track on "I", before dropping some filthy analogue techno science on the sparse, spaced-out pulse of "Sr".

Review: This Numbers debut by Lanark Artefax is an ode to a waterfall above the Scottish village of New Lanark and comes after his breakout offering on Whities as well as a busy run of live shows that make reference to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Bass heavy and melodic, with falling keys and glassy pads raining down the face of each track, "Moo Orphaned Drift" has a cosmic air to it while opening cut "Corra Linn" is an IDM drum flurry, but it is closer "Ferthenheap" which makes the most impact; it's an ambient, emotionally devastating neo-classical piano piece of the highest order.
