Review: Jazz trumpet legend Donald Byrd has one of those seemingly endless discography that takes in solo and group albums and is full of treasure that is well worth exploring no matter your particularly stylistic penchant. 1963's A New Perspective is a landmark album that brings gospel and soul elements into his usual jazz sound. It features a stellar lineup including Herbie Hancock and Hank Mobley and the centerpiece is the iconic 'Cristo Redentor,' a soulful composition that showcases Byrd's lyrical trumpet playing. With its fusion of genres, the album broke new ground and paved the way for future jazz explorations that Pitchfork have said is one of the best albums of the 1960s. Byrd's innovative approach and the ensemble's tight chemistry make that so.

Review: Lee Morgan's Search For The Land is a soulful exploration of jazz that now gets reissued as part of this classic series son the iconic Blue Note. Released first in 1966, the record showcases Morgan's virtuosity as a trumpeter and composer. With a lineup featuring heavyweights like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, each track is a journey through intricate melodies and dynamic rhythms. From the exhilarating title track to the introspective 'Melancholee,' Morgan's next level improvisation and emotive phrasing shine throughout. The album's rich textures, buoyant grooves, and evocative solos make it an evergreen gem in the jazz canon and one that captures the essence of Morgan's musical vision with unparalleled depth and allure.

Review: Blue Note's Tone Poet series is one of the most prolific and driven reissuing motors out there, focusing on faithful, audiophile-quality restorations, remasters and re-presses. Next on their list is Brooker Ervin's sax masterpiece Tex Book Tenor (1968). Contrasting to the revolutionary unease of its year of release, Tex Book Tenor abides by the book, bringing together five steady performances, including two covers (of Kenny Barron 'Gichi' and Woody Shaw's 'In A Capricornian Way'), and three originals, 'Den Tex', 'Lynn's Tune' and '204'. The album is soft-spoken in sound here - contrasting to his reputation for tough playing elsewhere - but this variety only proves Ervin's status as one of the fullest vessels around.

Review: Charles Lloyd returns with his latest musical offering, The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow, a majestic double LP of new studio recordings from the legendary saxophonist. Despite this being Lloyd's eleventh album for Blue Note, it still makes for a sudden comeback, as it is the first new set of sessions to appear since 2017's twin releases, 'Vanished Garden' and 'Tone Poem'. On The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow, Lloyd proffers a muted, tender sound, abiding by emotive progressions backed up by homespun lower bout hits and natural piano playing. Lloyd hardly needs to lift a finger to glean the reams of emotion that swell from his instrument.

Arriving with 13 original tracks, Lage's compositions navigate a rich tapestry of American music genres, from gospel hymns to California singer-songwriter vibes and skronky jazz. The album's lead single '76' showcases a hard-driving blues essence, while 'As It Were' offers an atmospheric acoustic ballad. With contributions from Kris Davis, Patrick Warren, Levon Henry, and his trusted trio with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, Lage presents a multifaceted musical journey that captivates and enthrals in equal measure here.

With each record in the series hand-picked by the "Tone Poet" himself - Joe Harley - and coming remastered, re-pressed, and reissued on 180 gram audiophile vinyl, each reissue aims to do diligent justice to the career of a particular jazz great by way of a select album, often with emphasis on records released on Blue Note's lesser-known sublabels such as Transition Records. A renowned trumpeter, Mitchell made the mutes sing with Down With It!, enlisting such notables as Junior Cook, Chick Corea, Gene Taylor and Al Foster for a powerful quintet-powered set, consisting of both originals ('March On Selma') and standards from across the pond (Terumasa Hino's 'Alone, Alone and Alone').

It came at a time when Henderson was at the peak of his creative powers and leading a stellar ensemble that included Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, and Bobby Hutcherson. He had a unique sound that sat in between the rawness of John Coltrane and the smoothness of Stan Getz and released a number of now-classic albums. Soul Station has already had the Tone Poet Series treatment and next up to get remastered and come on new audiophile vinyl is A Caddy For Daddy. He had already been a But Note artist for some 10 years when he recorded this one in 1965. Intimate in tone and capacious in intention, the music travels a wide range of American music, and delights in the deliberate crossing of wires between gospel hymn and rural blues, California singer-songwriter sunshine and skronky jazz. The 13-track set of new Lage originals is introduced today with a two track single pairing the hard-driving, bluesy '76'with the atmospheric acoustic ballad 'As It Were'. The album also includes the previously released single 'Omission', a reverent tune imbued with a pastoral swing.

It comes on heavyweight vinyl and captures all the glory of the original 1959 album which is known as a hard bop juggernaut. The quintet also featured trumpeter Blue Mitchell, saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor and drummer Louis Hayes alongside the masterful pianist and composer that is Silver himself. Groovy swinger 'Sister Sadie' is a real favourite here while 'Peace' is a fine ballad.

Review: Tina Brooks is actually the name that American tenor sax man Harold Floyd "Tina" Brooks went by. He was a hard bop pioneer active from the 50s onwards and he recorded with But Note between '58 and 61 with sidemen such as Kenny Burrell, Freddie Hubbard and Jimmy Smith. He recorded five albums for the label but many came after his death. Not True Blue, though, which came at the same time as his Blue Note debut, Open Sesame. it wasn't actively promoted but has since got plenty of appreciation from fans and critics alike.

A year later the final one, the seminal Blue Note label put the tracks together into two 12" albums as part of the 1500 series. They bare all the hallmarks of his early signature style from fiery bebop to beautiful ballads. Now the album comes in a mono, newly mastered version in the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition and pressed on 180g vinyl. Standouts include 'How Deep Is The Ocean' and 'Dear Old Stockholm.'

The firstmost, early bird in the Tone Poet series is none other than Lou Donaldson's Midnight Creeper; the third in a series of stellar soul jazz outings by the saxophonist, made for Blue Note in the late-1960s, with key players including Hammond B3 virtuoso Lonnie Smith, young guitar star George Benson, funky drummer Idris Muhammad and the bluesy trumpeter Blue Mitchell.

Indeed, only the coolest of the menthol-cool were permitted access to this album and Mobley's performances at the time of its release; this was undoubtedly a self-selecting process ensured by the garnering of some of the hottest talents of the day on band duties, including Herbie Hancock on piano, Donald Byrd on trumpet, and Butch Warren on bass. The album is made up of four originals and alto sax player Jackie McLean's engaging ballad 'Portrait of Doll'. Drummer Billy Higgins was also involved in these sessions, which were recorded in 1965 in the Van Gelder Studio just a few weeks after Morgan recorded his sextet date Cornbread. The prolific trumpeter kept up the good form here with explorations of hard bop and beyond, including a hard hitting and probing title cut and the laid-back 6/8 groove of 'Miss Nettie B.'

Over the past three decades, the saxophonist, composer, and bandleader has consistently demonstrated how to honor the music's verities while expanding its reach in contemporary settings. On where are we, Redman's first recording as a Blue Note artist, he delivers one of his most compelling albums to date, in a program featuring typically brilliant supporting partners and (in a first for Redman) built around a dynamic vocalist, Gabrielle Cavassa. With incisive attention to detail and impeccable recordings, this is not one to let pass by.

Review: Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean's 1960s output ran the gamut from hard bop to the avant-gard, with his 1964 post-bop dates It's Time! and Action splitting the difference. Now reissued for Blue Note's Tone Poet series, this reissue of the latter LP follows up Rudy Van Gelder's 2004 curator's edition; McLean's playing is lithe and limber here, piquing out from each mix - from the opening fan-outs of 'Plight' to the continual peacockings of 'I Hear A Rhapsody' - as if to suggest that McLean himself knows that his instrument resounds at the exact high frequency that naturally commands human attention. With the Tone Poet series primed for audiophiles, you're in for a treat.

He was joined for it by the drumming of Billy Higgins, alto saxophonist Sonny Red, pianist Cedar Walton, and bassist Walter Booker who all bring their own original compositions to the album. It's a pure hard bop session that marked the end of this chapter of Byrd's sound before he moved into fusion territory. Plenty of edgy groove-fess, ad-libbed vocals and boss flavours feature on what is one of many Byrd essentials.

Review: Cecil Taylor released Unit Structures on the Blue Note label in 1966. It was his debut on the label and was quickly followed up by a second album in the same year with Conquistador! This one came with an essay by Taylor entitled Sound Structure of Subculture Becoming Major Breath/Naked Fire Gesture and is known for its high energy and atonal sounds. It sat well within the plasm of the free-jazz of the times but was at the sharp end with its ferocious paying styles. It is a record rich on colour and mathematical complexity with two bassists adding their own low end weight.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has light surface marks/scratches, otherwise in excellent working condition***

Jazz could bait controversy with a sense of mischief even back in the 50s, as Chet Baker and Art Pepper demonstrated when they released the pin-up sporting Playboys in 1957 with tracks like 'For Minors Only'. Of course, Hugh Hefner had something to say about that and so the album was reissued as Picture Of Heath in 1961, and it remains a marvellous entry in the discographies of these two jazz masters. As such, Blue Note turned back to this record for their Tone Poet series, as Baker's trumpet and Pepper's alto sax interact with Phil Urso's tenor sax, Curtis Counce's bass, Carl Perkins' piano and Lawrence Marable's drums. It's an all-time great sounding better than ever on this edition.

Review: The incomparable trumpeter Clifford Brown recorded two leader sessions for Blue Note in 1953 - a co-led quintet date with Lou Donaldson and his own sextet date - that were compiled on the 12" Memorial album, shortly after his tragic death in 1956. Brownie's star burns bright from the blistering 'Cherokee' to the stunning ballad 'Easy Living'. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is mono, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

Review: Between 1964-1967 the legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter created a treasured and deeply influential body of work, among which 1967's Schizophrenia lay. On this meandering but impassioned jazz dedication to an often misunderstood mental state, Shorter arrived at the pinnacle of post-bop and gazed out at the horizons around him, producing one of his most complete and stylistically diverse artistic statements with a sextet of like-minded musical adventurers. James Spaulding on alto saxophone and flute, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Joe Chambers on drums; all came together to play some of Shorter's most enduring themes, including the unforgettable groove of 'Tom Thumb', the evocative 'Go', and the ballad 'Miyako'.

Next up is Big John Patton who is one of the many Hammond B3 organ greats signed to the label back int he day. The Kansas City born dynamo is known for bring soul to his take on jazz and he had a funk run of work during the 60s after first appearing as a sideman on Lou Donaldson's The Natural Soul and Good Gracious LPs. His solo work first came in 1963 then two years later he released his most unique work, Let 'Em Roll, a session with Grant Green and drummer Otis Finch also joined by vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Originals like 'Let Em Roll' and 'Latona'' really standout.

Known for being a legendary player of the Hammond B3 organ, he recorded a couple of soul jazz classics in Midnight Special and Back at the Chicken Shack, both on the same day in April 1960 at the famous Van Gelder Studio. Smith lead the way with his self taught organ skills alongside Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Donald Bailey on drums. Review: Ella Fitzgerald has a spotless discography that is packed with many a classic tunes but for plenty of fans and critics alike, Let No Man Write My Epitaph is one of her ultimate standouts. She recorded the album back in 1960 with backing from the pianist Paul Smith. The album takes its name from the movie in which Fitzgerald starred and hits some truly rare depth of emotional understanding. It helped secure Ella's status as one of the finest translators of the Great American Songbook and now Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series transfers the originals from analog tapes and has remastered them on to 180-gram vinyl complete with deluxe gatefold packaging.

Review: McCoy Tyner looked towards Africa on his stunning 1970 album Extensions, a far-reaching exploration of Black identity that marked the masterful pianist's fifth recording for Blue Note Records. After leaving John Coltrane's band, Tyner had moved from Impulse to Blue Note and made his enduring post-bop classic The Real McCoy in 1967. In the following years Tyner steadily expanded his musical scope: writing for a 9-piece ensemble on Tender Moments; exploring the textures of a piano-vibes led quartet with Bobby Hutcherson on Time for Tyner; and pushing at the boundaries of mainstream jazz on Expansions. Extensions is perhaps most notable for being the only recorded collaboration between Tyner and Alice Coltrane who plays harp on three of the album's four pieces (all composed by Tyner) along with Gary Bartz on alto saxophone, Wayne Shorter on soprano and tenor saxophone, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums.

Review: Easterly Winds by Jack Wilson is a jazz classic that showcases the pianist's virtuosity and emotive depth. Released now as part of the Tone Poet Series, the album encapsulates Wilson's ability to blend intricate harmonies with soulful improvisation. The gentle yet evocative melodies, carried by Wilson's nimble fingers, capture the essence of cool jazz elegance. The interplay between piano, bass, and drums creates a contemplative atmosphere across the record that is reminiscent of a breezy journey guided by the titular easterly winds. As such, the record stands as a timeless example of his artistry and one that left a fine mark on the landscape of jazz.

The set list is a varied one that blitzes its way through Broadway show tunes, big pop songs, some special pieces by Miles Davis and Kenny Dorham, and Sonny's own much-loved 'Blues for Philly Joe.' Review: So it is for most jazz stalwarts, Grant Green's home for the majority of his career was Blue Note Records, who now reissue his self-titled debut LP Green Street. His sophomore LP after the big splash that was his debut, Grant's First Stand, in 1961, this one went on to cement the esteemed jazz guitarist's repertoire as a musician not to be trifled with, thanks to its demonstrable live synergy with Ben Tucker on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Verifiably Green - in stark contrast to jazz's usual blue.

Review: .McCoy Tyner was already an assured Blue Note label regular by the time he dropped his most classic album, Time For Tyler. The acclaimed pianist had debuted in 1967 with The Real McCoy not long after leaving the John Coltrane quarter. This one was his third for the label, recorded in 1968, and calling upon the services of vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Freddie Waits. Between them, they cooked up ethereal textures and visceral grooves across a strong six-song set with three originals to start, and three jazz-standards to close.

A year later he got back in the studio to work on Great Jazz Standards which saw him work with two different ensembles including talents like trumpeter Johnny Coles, soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and clarinetist Budd Johnson amongst more. It is a superb look at some great jazz gems from Bix Beiderbecke's 'Davenport Blues' to a shimmering version of Thelonious Monk's 'Straight No Chaser.' It gets the full remastering treatment for this reissue.

Review: It’s not often you hear titans of the golden era of Blue Note tackling the relative stricture of pop, but that’s what Grant Green did on his 1965 album I Want To Hold Your Hand. As you might well expect, the seminal jazz guitarist lead with a rendition of The Beatles classic, creating a bold abstraction of the original backed up by Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Larry Young on organ and Elvin Jones on drums. Along with the other slightly less familiar songs from the 40s and 50s, Green holds court and channels vocal lyricism into incredibly expressive guitar playing on this standout set from the accomplished peak of his career.

Review: Harking yet another Tone Poet 2024 edition to come, comes this new forthcoming reissue from the esteemed master drummer Elvin Jones: Poly-Currents. After his six years with the seminal John Coltrane Quartet, Jones signed with Blue Note in 1968 and began building his own career as a bandleader. His first two albums for the label were spare trio outings - Puttin' It Together and The Ultimate - both featuring saxophonist Joe Farrell and bassist Jimmy Garrison. For 1969's unfettered post-bop exploration Poly-Currents, Jones expanded his ensemble with additional woodwinds and percussion while still maintaining spacious realms for the musicians to delve into on modal band member originals including 'Agenda,' 'Agappe Love,' 'Mr. Jones,' and 'Whew'. Jones is joined throughout by a cast that includes Farrell on tenor saxophone, English horn and flutes, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Fred Tompkins on flute, Wilbur Little on bass and Cuban conguero Candido Camero.

Review: Bebop piano genius Bud Powell made his most enduring recordings as a leader for Blue Note, and was a catalyst for moving the label from the hot jazz on which it was founded, into the modern music made by Powell, Thelonious Monk, Fats Navarro, and others. Powell's 1949 and 1951 quintet & trio sessions were first released in 1952, in the form of the 10" LP The Amazing Bud Powell, and later expanded as The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1, when Blue Note moved to the 12" LP and launched the 1500 series in 1955. The quintet date featured the pianist with the likes of trumpeter Fats Navarro, tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, bassist Tommy Potter, and drummer Roy Haynes performing Powell originals such as 'Dance of the Infidels,' 'Wail,' and 'Bouncing with Bud.' The trio date featured bassist Curly Russell and drummer Max Roach joining Powell on the jaunty classic 'Un Poco Loco,' presented here in three evolving takes, along with timeless versions of Powell's 'Parisian Thoroughfare' and Dizzy Gillespie's 'A Night In Tunisia,' as well as showstopping solo piano performance of 'It Could Happen To You.'
