Review: For many young film lovers today, Call Me By Your Name might have just been their first ever experience of homosexuality represented on film. It also put heartthrob Timothee Chalamet on the map, so it's not a film without its dues owed to it. Few still know of the star-studded cast of soundtrack pieces cobbled together for the film, in some cases commissioned, in others licensed from prior recordings. Notably, original compositions from the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Ryuichi Sakamoto make up the atmospheric bulk of it, largely centring on hauntingly beautiful piano pieces tempered by transitional voices and well-controlled rooms. Review: The Fall's Mark E. Smith was having a rather torrid time even by his own standards when the band made The Marshall Suite in 1999. He was fresh back from a US tour on which he had been fighting with fellow band members on stage and was later arrested after carrying on the shenanigans back at the hotel. The album itself builds on the techno sounds The Fall had explored on the preceding album Levitate but also with something of a return to the rockabilly-influenced sound from earlier Fall line-ups. Cuts like 'The Crying Marshal' are as strange and complex as they come with thumping jungle drums powering it along.

Review: Nina Simone has rather been written out of popular music history because of quite how confrontational and proudly Black she was. She was just as far ahead of her times musically too and this legendary album Baltimore shows why. It arrived with no promotion and no lead singles and so it was an utter commercial failure, but the sleuths of the internet have rediscovered it over the 45 years since its release and helped to make it a cult favourite now regarded as one of the best in her oeuvre. It has distinctive reggae production and of course plenty of beautiful vocals from Simone as she tackles songs written by Judy Collins, Hall & Oates, and Randy Newman.

Review: You don't have to be a film score obsessive to recognise the name of Hans Zimmer; the man who has practically created a monopoly out of the craft. While his work on the recent Denis Villeneuve adaptations of Dune has currently ended his creative partnership with auteur filmmaker Christopher Nolan (who has since enlisted the exceptional Ludwig Goransson in his stead), during their collaborative tenure, no particular score garnered the adoration and passionate praise that still continues to be heaped upon 2014's sci-fi spectacle Interstellar. Featuring some of Zimmer's most mercurial work to date, swaying from lilting hues of delicacy to bombastic, palpable, otherworldly dread, without ever veering into alienating sonics; the pieces still receives copious applause, instigate enthralling discussion and continue to be repressed to vinyl. In short, the Interstellar score is the outlier soundtrack for every collector.

Yeah contains ten catchy songs, most prominently the album's preceding hit single 'In The Name Of The Father', with influences from indie-pop, alternative, funk, disco, with rough guitar, rapping all glued together and produced by American Danny Saber. Review: Collins & Collins was a short-lived but no less significant collaboration between American soul brother-sister duo Bill and Tonee Collins. They've been the subject of many-a-reissue over the years but none so far have harked back to the obvious: their debut, self-titled album, which contained a wealth of slick covers of soul standards like 'Top Of The Stairs' and 'Can't Turn Down Love', effectively amounting to a wordless masterclass in loving cool. Review: American soul man Bilal dropped his debut album in 2001. Back then, r&b and neo-soul were in their golden times and Bilal was one of the best in the game. The singer songwriter was of course part of he influential 90s collective The Soulquarians alongside members D'Angelo, Q-Tip, Common and Questlove and some of those feature here as well as the likes of Robert Glasper. Production was taken care of by none other than Dr Dre alongside Raphael Saadiq and J Dilla. Lead single 'Soul Sista' toped the US charts and remarkably this is the first time the album has ever been available on vinyl.

Review: Cuckoo was their second full length from Curve - Toni Halliday on vocals and guitar with Dean Garcia - and saw its release in 1993. This album was heavier, focused and featured stronger, more aggressive rhythms that evolved from their first album. Heavily influenced by bombastic urban and electronic beats but favouring shoegaze effects on the guitars, making for a unique combination that made Cuckoo stand out from the rest, ultimately predating similar sounds from bands like Garbage. This album holds key tracks like the amazing 'Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus' as well as the singles 'Missing Link' and 'Super Blaster'. The effects of Curve are still being felt today by those who discover them and fans of the producer Flood should definitely be aware of this album if they are not already. This reissue comes on limited numbered 180- Gram pink & purple vinyl LP complete with an insert.

Review: American hip-hop group Ultramagnetic MCs dropped their second album Funk Your Head Up in 1992. It was the group's second album and many of its tunes, at the request of the Mercury Records label execs, were remixes by outside producers. Hardcore fans of the group didn't like the results and neither was the album a particular commercial success, with the one hit was, ironically, a Beatminerz remix of 'Poppa Large' that never made the album. Review: Sorcerer is a 1967 album from the Miles Davis Quintet - the third of six albums the group recorded. The line-up is a who's who of the era, with Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on double bass and Tony Williams on drums. The only exception is the track 'Nothing Like You' which closes the album, originally recorded in 1962 with a wholly different line-up including Bob Dorough on vocals. It's considered one of the greatest albums of the Quintet's run, capturing a moment when Davis was moving on from trad bop and drawing on the writing talents of his peers in the group.

Review: To the delight of the 80s synth-pop faithful holding on to the decade prior, Martin Fry revived ABC in 1997 after a five-year hiatus. It's noticeable that Fry wasn't interested in repeating old tricks though, as he took the band in a new direction alongside Heaven 17's Glenn Gregory without losing that keen sense of songwriting magic that made ABC so popular the first time around. Loaded with emotionally charged reflections on life, the universe and everything, this is a welcome pressing on blue and white marble vinyl which is limited to 1000 copies.

Review: It could have all been so different when Death In Vegas first formed. Richard Fearless and Steve Hellier spawned the project in 1994 and got signed under the name Dead Elvis, but legal wrangling got in the way and they used the name for their debut album instead. Now Music On Vinyl have repressed the 1997 classic so we can revel in the grizzled take on big beat and trip hop the pair cooked up. It's very much of its time, but there's a snarl to the production which sets Death In Vegas apart from their peers at the time, opting for the dive bar ambience over the festival main stage you'd hear when playing The Chemical Brothers or Leftfield. For that reason Dead Elvis has aged very well indeed.

Review: The 4th Street Orchestra is one of several aliases used by Matumbi, which was actually one of Britain's first and most original reggae bands back in 1971 when they were founded initially. For the best showcase of their sound look no further than this landmark roots record Ah Who Seh? Go Deh! which came in 1976 and has been hard to find since. This is a first ever official reissue of it and finds Dennis 'Blackbeard' Bovell tapping into his vast knowledge of sound system culture and laying down heavy rhythms with plenty of Jah-worshipping, Zion-referencing lyrics and soulful yearnings. It's complex and cultured and packs a true bass heavy punch.

Review: An ironic title, given that this, Presely's seventh album and a Billboard chart topper to boot, actually collects together many of the King's finest singles onto one LP that first saw the light of day in 1959. Presumably, it's for album fans because single fans will have already own the wax on 45. But there's no denying the world shattering efficiency of the music contained within, from 'That's All Right', his world-changing debut single, to 'Mystery Train' and 'Shake, Rattle & Roll', the latter being a particular dancefloor filler in its time.

Review: Los Angeles glam metal superstars, Warrant, had their biggest success with this Cherry Pie album. It's the band's second full-length and it contains two of their biggest top 40 charting singles. Both the title track and the cheeky anthem, 'I Saw Red', catapulted their name into the 80s-turned-90s rock stratosphere, while the somewhat infantile humour, braggadocios attitude, and hidden intrigue of deeper cuts such as, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', would signal the more abstract lyricism and clever song-writing tropes that would be more fleshed out and fully realised by the time 1992's seminal, 'Dog Eat Dog', arrived. Review: With roots in a band called Shake Appeal, who were informed by The Stooges and MC5, among other late-60s garage rockers, by the time we got to Mezcal Head, Swervedriver's second album, the group had turned their attention to what was blowing up Stateside. Taking a lead from the likes of Dinosaur Jr and - to less of a wall of sound extent - Sonic Youth, they combined elements of then fertile grunge and shoegaze scenes, to make a noisy but coherent whole. Released in 1993, the sophomore record first hit on the mighty Creation Records, which is a seal of approval if ever there was one. While still failing to really penetrate the mainstream, everyone from NME to Alternative Press heaped praise on the work, and listening back it's easy to hear why. Rough and ready guitar work meets a lackadaisically cool atmosphere, energy like a coiled spring at times.

Review: Great Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora was pretty prolific and put out several still well-regarded albums, from Distino Di Belita to Cafe Alantico via Vox D'amor. Many of them have been reissued recently and next up to get that treatment is Club Sodade, which finds a bunch of her tracks getting a contemporary club rework by a wide array of musicians. It comes on heavyweight red vinyl so is ready for serious DJ deployment. Carl Craig's mix of organic hand claps and fizzing techno synth intensity on his rework of 'Angola' is one of the most well-known cuts here but deep house heads will also know and love Kerri Chandler's percussive take on 'Nho Antone Escarderode.'

Review: The highly anticipated eighth full-length from Dutch symphonic metal legends Within Temptation comes four arduous years since the release of 2019's overlooked Resist. Hindered by global lockdown due to the COVID pandemic putting up barriers and blocks in the midst of the prolific collective's recording process, singles have been slowly drip-fed to the masses over the past few years with anthemic closer 'Entertain You' first being unveiled all the way back in the summer of 2020. Review: American r&b and jazz fusion singer, arranger, musician, composer and conductor Dexter Wansel made an indelible impression with his debut album back in 1976, Life On Mars set a new standard for fusion sounds while also serving up what is still considered a space-funk classic. More than that, though, the album which was inspired by David Bowie's Life On Mars also has the seminal 'Theme From The Planets' on it - the drum beat from which is often said to be one of the foundational beats for the hip-hop scene that emerged soon after. As such it's not a shock to know that the record has been sampled endlessly by greats like Drake, Ice Club, Lil Wayne and Kanye. Stick this one on and prepare to be wowed all over again by Wansel's masterful use of his ARP 2600 synthesizer.

Review: Finnish hip-hop duo Bombfunk MCs made a massive splash in 1999 when they dropped their debut album In Stereo. It sold well due to the success of its lead singles like 'Uprocking Beats' and 'Freestyler', which took after a mixture of big beat and b-boy raps for an effective semester of classes in the school of hip bangerology. This reissue by MOV reminds us, though, that there are plenty of greats left to be heard on the album, too, from 'Sky's The Limit' to '1,2,3,4'. A point of pride for the Finnish music scene, it's certainly not one to be missed for those seeking a complete collection of breaks records.

Review: The Darling Buds were an alternative rock band from Newport, Wales. They formed in 1986, were named after the H. E. Bates novel The Darling Buds of May and Erotica is their third and final album, released a few weeks before Madonna's album of the same name in October 1992. The album contained the US single, 'Long Day In The Universe', which was featured on the soundtrack for the Mike Myers film, So I Married an Axe Murderer. Erotica is available as a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on translucent yellow coloured vinyl and includes an insert.

Review: British pop band Bros aka twin brothers Matt and Luke Goss, and originally their mate Craig Logan, dropped their debut album Push back in 1988. It gets a special 35th anniversary reissue now, all these years after it peaked at number two on the UK album chart and was certified quadruple platinum. Nicky Graham and Bros' manager Tom Watkins wrote all the material which has some rather avant-gard ideas for pop music - childhood poverty on 'Ten Out of Ten', the AIDS epidemic of the era on 'Shocked' and the heartache of previous relationships on 'I Owe You Nothing.' It remains a great British classic pop record.

Review: A great choice by Music On Vinyl - whom at this point have proven their mettle at sating the desires of almost any type of past music enjoyer - Chapterhouse's 'Whirlpool' is the debut studio album by the English shoegaze band, and thoroughly deserves this case of retrospection. In just nine tracks, the quartet of Andrew Sheriff, Stephen Patman, Simon Rowe and Ashley Bates established a hugely maximal sound, stylistically nailing the form by pairing its vacuuming vocal washes with more propulsive, hard-limited mixes and masters, informed by industrial and dance music most notably. Contemporaries of similarly tersely-named bands like Lush, Moose, Ride and Curve, Chapterhouse were indeed the most multi-syllabic, not to mention least restrained band out at the time; standouts 'Pearl', 'Autosleeper' and 'Falling Down' nailed the explosion of '90s indie ferment and the overflow of emotions that came with the decade.

Review: American rap outfit Sugarhill Gang changed music history with their fresh hip-hop sounds and never more so than on their self-titled album. It is often said to be the first rap full length and it came in 1980, a full four-plus decades ago now so gets a special, if possibly slighty late, 40th-anniversary reissue on limited edition and numbered heavyweight vinyl. It, of course, includes the band's most seminal tune, 'Rapper's Delight', in two different versions, as well as equally timeless joints like 'Rapper's Reprise (Jam-Jam)' and the much loved 'Sugar Hill Groove'. A bona fide classic, this one.
