  1. The Boys In The Band - "Pain" (First Time On vinyl)
  2. Little Fint - "Pain"
Review: Upfront to Juno ! New Mukatsuku 45 from America Mid West with two versions of ''Pain'' with The Boys In The Band version never seeing a commercial vinyl release and in our opinion far superior ! Little Flint's wobby intro original version sells upwards of 400 GBP when you can find a clean copy. Hand-numbered to 500 units one off limited pressing.Strictly no repress

Wayne Perry & Randy Mcnutt decided to record a version of Pain in a power Soul Rock mode which were all the range in Cincinnati, Ohio at the time of the recording around 1973.The Boys In The Band version features Wayne singing solo but was never released. What was released was the Little Flint version (a name that Wayne had chosen as an alto ego guise ) and assisted with that version by an uncredited vocalist from Alaska singing live singing on top of the same rhythm track. Other band members included Roger 'Jellyroll' Troy on bass,Jerry Love on drums,Gary Boston on guitar,Craig Shenafield & Terry Burnside on brass (all five had played on sessions/backed James Brown at certain points in their careers) plus the young B-3 Organist Terry Hoskins who was just 17 at the time.DJ support from The Allergies so far..

  1. Tall Black Guy - "I Will Never Know" (feat Moonchild - 14KT IAMABEENIE remix) (4:25)
  2. 14KT - "The Power Of Same" (feat Muhsinah - Tall Black Guy remix) (4:01)
Review: First Word's latest must-have 12" sees label regulars Tall Black Guy (AKA hip-hop beat-maker Terrel Wallace) and self-proclaimed "chop artist" 14KT (real name Kendall Tucker) remix each other's tracks. The latter steps up first to re-configure Wallace's Moonchild collaboration "I Will Never Know" as a folksy, bass-heavy chunk of slipped soul/jazz fusion dripping with folksy acoustic guitars and ear-catching vocals. Wallace repays the compliment on the flip, delivering a warm, crispy and R&B-influenced hip-hop soul revision of recent single "The Power Of Same", featuring the seductive vocals of Muhsinah. If soul, jazz and hip-hop all float your boat, this should be an essential purchase.

Review: graed is a Glasgow-based horn player and composer whose work unpacks themes of labour, process, facilitation, counterculture and liturgy in the context of the contemporary dance scene. graed's compositions are created live and developed with the audience. His creation process employs horns, voice, percussion and the loop-based technology that facilitates grime, trap and trance music.
"I see sculptures when I look at the audience"
Done without the intention of capturing a rehearsed time signature but, instead, to force the music into the unknown by allowing the skeleton of the work to retain unpredictability. This side of the graed's work is grounded in a free jazz, with the idea that something unique is created between an audience and a performer, As such - a shared present.
Feverish, pagan nights of percussion. A ticket to a psychoactive place at once familiar yet obscure.

Review: The first record from the mysterious Monsieur Blue attracted plenty of favourable attention from the deep house and minimal fraternity when it dropped last year, and so the anonymous artist rolls around for a second bout with this sterling three-tracker. Deep and dubby pads meet with rock-solid grooves on the A1, while the A2 track strips things back to an insistent rhythm, emphasising the space in the mix. The B-side track meanwhile channels a funky energy into the spaced out headspace Monsieur Blue inhabits, completing a strong trio of club-ready trippers for the dreamiest of dancefloors.

Review: New York soul singer and performer CJ Smith links up with The Timmion Records studio band for another of his era-spanning singles. It's a golden affair with a luxurious sound that takes in soaring trumpets and squelchy keys. The rolling drums are airy and light and Carlton Jumel Smith turns in a fine performance, his slightly gravely voice delivering the vocals with real pathos's he pays tribute to the woman who made him. The flip has an instrumental version making this yet another tidy 7".

  1. Burning The Heather (radio edit) (4:02)
  2. Decide (4:44)
Review: Britain's most successful synth-pop duo might now be in their early sixties, but the Pet Shop Boys are still capable of crafting near perfect songs - as their forthcoming album "Hotspot" proves. There's plenty to enjoy on this taster single, which like the rest of the album was co-produced by Stuart Price. "Burning The Heather" is a warming and autumnal affair, with their usual bright synths being toned down in favour of jangly acoustic guitars and the kind of bittersweet electronic sounds that dominated their superb 1990 album "Behaviour". Flipside "Decide" is a more upbeat and throbbing affair that includes a rare vocal from the sometime "third sexist man in pop" Chris Lowe (albeit one drenched in auto-tune).

Review: Lost In Time has laid down some killer 12"s to date from the likes of Ralph Lawson and Tuccillo, and now they welcome London-based scene staple Alex Arnout to the label with an on-point EP of explorative house music variations. "No Borders" features long time US house veteran Jovonn, and the pair whip up a tracky tech house roller with serious percussive pressure and a subtle lick of dub in the mix. "Downtown 500" is a rough and tough, bashy house jam with a fresh drum palette, and by contrast "Riddim" brings a straight up deep house vibe with classic organ licks aplenty, that almost sound like they should be the handiwork of Jovonn as well. "Jam The Dance" finishes the EP off with a twitchy house cut peppered with vocal slices.

  1. 70s Theme
  2. Brother Beware
  3. Express Yourself
Review: Imogen have stumbled across a rare gem here, presenting some previously unheard liquid funk jams from the lesser known Chicago pioneer James Perri. Some of his jams as Jimi Polo are perennial classics, while his time spent in Soul II Soul and elsewhere are testament to his gifts, but this particular set of recordings from the 90s have lain in wait for their time to shine. You can hear his skills as a session musician and arranger coming through in abundance on this warm, grooving, acid jazz inflected EP. "70s Theme" is a sparse, moody jazz funk cut, while "Brother Beware" is a smooth, sultry slice of message soul. "Express Yourself" is the truly uplifting slice of the pie, and it will chime just fine with any lovers of that classic Soul II Soul sound.

Review: Astute wax enthusiast Brothers' Vibe brings forth the third installment of his Mixx Split series, meant to cast light on what the multi-label boss is notorious for: soulful house music! Also signing the opening track 0.95Lonliness', the American prodigy takes us on a deep incursion, skillfully layering classic house beats over uplifting sounds into a heart racing groove. Newcomer Eddie Merced follows up with a deep and dreamy offering, infusing trancy vibes into a futuristic bassline for a full 6:29 minutes of 'Midtown Cruisin''. Delving further into the deep ambient realm, Japanese producer Tominori Hosoya doles out some tribal sounds for his spatial track "Paradise". Closing tune "Deep Space" gives away just a bit of the surprise in its title, as George P injects his signature Tech House oomph in a contrasting murky bassline.

We're not certain on where this band originally hail from, but they've got the vibe down perfectly on this smoking hot 7". "Madchester Woman" skits and scatters with loose in-the-room drums, a sassy brass section and sweet high life guitar licks. "White Noise" brings Clair Fallows on board for a strong vocal turn that turns the temperature up. This is soul-stirring Afrobeat in the mould of the originators, executed with respectful accuracy and played with passion.

Review: This february Nightdrivers deliver three first-rate cuts on Holic Trax for the 'Quando Party Dove Vai ?' EP. Following on from Burnski's 'The Hours' EP which saw love from names like Mr G, Catz 'N' Dogz, Detroit Swindle and Eats Everything, Holic Trax returns this February with Nightdrivers' 'Quando Party Dove Vai ?'. Since delivering their debut release on Bosconi Records back in 2013 the Berlin-based duo Nightdrivers have been going from strength to strength stacking up further releases on Claap, their own Nightdrivers label and now Holic Trax. To get things underway the light pads of 'Resta Pure Dove Sei' give the opening track a floaty quality while the weighty percussion and subtle rhythms build proceedings into a steady and infectious groove. Nightdrivers appear to go up a gear as the EP progresses with the rippling drums and dynamic arrangements of 'La Ronde Suite (But Not For Me)' while 'Fast Cars' maintains the lively vibe of its predecessor and frenetically bubbles along over busy modulations, wacky intonations and infectious licks to dish up a suitably punchy close to this bouncy EP.

Review: Jaunt Records' 10 year celebrations are spanning a series of 12"s that feature a broad spectrum of artists searching for the ultimate deep techno fix. The four contenders that occupy this Sea release all have their own agenda, but they sit together perfectly. Hiver weaves illustrious pads in between nimble electro drums and bubbling acid bass, while Artefakt creates eerie, fractured acid meanderings to send a shiver down your spine. Review: Having largely operated on an autonomous self-release basis up to this point, Outstrip make a sturdy connection with the Dogmatik empire and serve up some of their crucial minimal house wares for all to behold. "A1" is a shimmering treat of a cut with just the right amount of colour bleeding in between the drums, while "NeproEP" strips things back to a raw, functional core. "Peremay" has an ultra-minimal, ever so slightly dubby vibe to it, while "Rastafara" keeps things as lean as possible as well. This is a record that does a sterling job of demonstrating how less can indeed be more.

Review: Mukatsuku's long running "Afro Funk & Disco Gems" series has always been a reliable source of obscure, high-quality dancefloor material from the African continent. This tenth edition is another must-have - on the A-side you'll find the synth-laden, boogie-era sunshine of "Everybody Dance", one of the undisputed highlights of Peter Yamson's in-demand (and notably hard to find) "Son Of Africa" LP. With wonderful vocals, glistening guitars, lolloping drum machine beats and some stellar synth work, the track ticks all the right boxes. Over on the flip there's a chance to own Cameroon legend Tala Andre Marie's 1981 classic "Get Up Tchamassi", whose snaking sax lines, elastic slap bass and dreamy chords are nothing less than sensational. As played by The Allergies, DJ Koco, Joe Claussell,Smoov,Kalita, Faze Action,DJ Moar etc

Rantzen is an Australian producer with a history remixing the likes of Severed Heads and working alongside Paul Mac as Itch-E & Scratch-E. His lead track "Digital Elf" is a stripped a raw beats n' bleeps workout, while "The Dial" finds Mac chipping in as they rework the track into a deadly old-skool burner for lovers of bleep techno. Review: Mukatsuku struck gold again on this latest first time on a "45" issue. It boasts a couple of lesser-known jazz-funk fusion jams which originally featured on Argentine musician Jorge Navarro's 1977 album "Navarro Con Polenta", an LP that has never been issued outside of South America. A-side "Funk Yourself" is a bustling, high-octane jazz-funk Hammond licks and spiralling horns jumping above a Blaxploitation style backing track. "Repartamos El Funky" is a more laid back but no less musically intricate affair, with a variety of high-grade electric piano and guitar solos riding seemingly endless jazz style drum solos and rubbery bass. Review: Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer has described Willie Dale's "Let Your Light Shine" as "one of the best discoveries in the last 15 years". Only five copies of the original 7" single have surfaced to date, with the most recent changing hands for eye-watering sums of money. You can see why Fryer was so excited by "Let Your Light Shine": while rooted in both funk and soul, the track also draws heavily on psychedelic rock and the fuzzy, funk-rock fusion brilliance of Sly Stone. Original B-side "Somebody Help Me" is an altogether more laidback affair, with Dale offering impassioned and melancholic lyrics over a psychedelic era take on old rhythm & blues ballads.

Cutting his teeth in the Lafayette Afro Rock Band before going solo, he recorded a whole host of material that remained unreleased. Until now. "Love Goddess" kicks off the collection with a northern soul stomp, big harmonies backed by a tight, slippery funk groove while "Good News" is golden era Boyd funk with its bright horn work, positive sentiment and driving soul energy. In true Knoe fashion, release 4/1 is a compilation of tracks unearthed from a CD squirrelled away for a decade in a dusty loft. The CD in question was loaded with unreleased and untitled material from the owners of and producers for two of the UK's rarest and sought after tech house labels rinsed by DJs such as Craig Richards in the late 90s.

Review: Having originally surfaced on Creme Organization back in 2002, Luke Eargoggle and Ronnie Johansson's Monkeyshop project is an intermittent treat that offers the best of warm synth-led electronic disco. On their second outing for Ali Renault's Vivod label (after the excellent Escape From The Mental Zoo EP in 2014) the pair bring yet more of that addictive, utopian dance magic on this new record. "Island Of Love" is indeed a romantic club burner with smatterings of vintage synth pop in its bones, while "Heartbreak" takes a more overtly Italo direction and sounds just as strong with it. Obergman then takes "Island Of Love" to task with a respectful remix that shines a few different synth lines and beat patterns through the same fuzzy prism.
