Review: Perfeitamente, Justamente Quando Cheguei is one of those cult Latin albums from the Brazilian fusion heyday of the 70s as it mixes up psych-folk and MPB in unique ways. The artwork alone is worth the cover price if you ask us but the music also stands up from Rubinho E Mauro Assumpcao, who released just this one album which has since become incredibly hard to find, even in the country itself. Swaggering samba rhythms, funky rhythms and carefree vocals (about what we have no idea) all make it a richly rewarding listening experience.

Review: Ceremony Of Seasons drops its first two releases in quick succession and after Ross Gentry's inaugural ambient wine pairing, Brett Naucke now repeats the trick. He has written this lush ambient long player "to be paired with Conjured In Shadows, a Mendocino-grown, carbonic macerated Nouveau wine from the 2022 harvest." It is a superbly organic soundtrack with found sounds and plenty of evocative designs all bringing to mind a warm day outdoors on 'An Open Secret', celestial skies on 'A Glass Touch' and autumn melancholy on 'Private Life'. The flipside explores the rest of the season with icy melodies and candle-lit sounds that evoke hymnal solitude.

Review: Ross Gentry takes charge of the first Ceremony of Seasons release and the music on it has been specifically written to "be paired with Sink into Seclusion, a Mendocino grown, amphora aged, skin contact Sauvignon Blanc wine." Though it might go well with wine, it works just as well on its own as a pastoral, subtly shifting ambient album with delicate pianos unfolding over sustained chords. Moods fluctuate from cathartic and dreamy on the opener to a little more unsettled and tense on 'A Shadow Decade.' How so ever you enjoy this record it is one that makes a lasting impact.

Review: Spectacular Diagnostics is a meticulously crafted record where every single sound serves a purpose. It's packed with loops, samples, movie dialogue and intricate layers of rhythm that reveal something new each time you listen. It's another huge success for the artists following on from his precious Ancient Methods album and finds the Chicago producer work with Wrecking Crew and Backwoodz affiliates Curly Castro and PremRock, Fatboi Sharif and Bruiser Wolf, Uk talents SonnyJim, King Kashmere, CLBRKS, Lee Scott & Bisk, and Kid Acne who he has worked with often. A supreme work of hip-hop craft.

Review: Enter Shikari belong to a particularly impressive hardcore subset that seem to get better with each passing year and record. A Kiss For the Whole World is their seventh studio outing, but it sounds almost like a band exploding into action for the first time. A high energy declaration of intent and bold approach to stamping their personality down on the planet they so eagerly want to embrace.
Uplifting would be another - far simpler - way to describe what's here. These are anthems in the truest sense, with tracks like 'Dead Wood' reaching for the kind of euphoric sonic heights few outfits can hope to come close to. A rousing, unifying number. Of course, in typical Shikari fashion, it's not actually all so lead- single-worthy, with some of the finest moments far less in your face. Review: Claims have been made that Smog was among the first pieces of work written for four channel tape. It's almost impossible to back that up given the nature of music at the time this was made (1974) and indeed today. What's clear is that Kyriakos Sfetsas was and is a legendary pioneer of Greek electronic output, and this is one of his most acclaimed efforts.
Divided into five distinct parts, this score for the ballet of the same name is a patchwork of analogue synth noises, a sonic narrative told through what now sound like rudimentary modular tones and refrains akin to the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop's experiments in tune and structure. Yet, despite those retro references, Smog still has an air of something that has travelled back in time to show us where experimental tracks might get to in some distant future, providing we don't destroy ourselves first.

Review: U2's latest album finds the iconic rock band re-recording some of their back catalogue songs. The whole record has been produced by The Edge and in all there are 40 tunes coming in companion to famous bespectacled front man Bono's memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, from last year. The record took two years to record during the pandemic and after reviewing demos arrangements were tweaked and in some cases reinterpreted and often redone in a more acoustic setting. Fans have received the album well and it is fair to say there is plenty to like about it.

Review: The Jon Hassell retrospective series from Ndeya Records continues with 'The Living City', which captures the late composer at his creative peak, performing live at the renowned Winter Garden concert hall in New York in the 1980s. Forming something of an escape from his jazz-influenced ambient works, this performance instead shows off Hassell's interest in the popularity of sampling hip-hop at the time. With influences from Public Enemy to Teo Macero, this is a whirlwind of sampled noise and snippets, which all continually loop and circle back on each other in a mood of mild yet evocative madness.

Review: Jon Hassell's later albums were increasingly influenced by the post-jazz composer's favourite philosophies and thinkers. 'City: Works Of Fiction' - reworked into 'Psychogeography: Zones Of Feeling' here - is a strong case in point. Inspired by the work of French anarchist Guy Debord, who wrote extensively on topics such as surrealism, anti-consumerism and art, culminating in an umbrella philosophy known as situationism, Hassell's later works are perfect hazes, indeterminate ambient jazz storms through which to experience the past via psychic explorations of one's immediate surroundings.
