Review: This is the only complete recording of Marc Bolan's summer tour of 1972, when the artist scoured most of the UK following the smash success of his first albums, not to mention his first movie ('Born To Boogie') and record label. A popular zeitgeist of "T. Rexstasy" followed, with Bolan's appearances at venues such as Wembley Empire Pool (now Arena) and the Capitol Theatre cementing his gargantuan live sound, all driven home by his joyous grin and all-encompassing mop of hair. This appearance by Bolan in Newcastle's City Hall in May of that year is raw and unfiltered and as ever textured by the sound of screaming fans below.

There's no better example of a follow-up LP this week than Nation Of Language's 'A Way Forward', which brings up the rear and engulfs 'Introduction', the band's 2020 debut. Put simply, this album is krautrocky, whereas the last one was closer to synthpop. This subtle change came as a result of Ian Devaney, Aidan Noell, and Michael Sue-Poi attempting to "trace the roots of their sound", "hoping to learn something from the early influences of our early influences", from big names like Can through to Laurie Spiegel and Cluster. Recorded through the past year's lockdowns, a long-form mood of relentless melancholy is the result, blending driving drum machines with intense reverb and yearning male vocals - 'The Grey Commute' and 'Former Self' being emotive highlights. Keep an eye for the limited red and blue split vinyl version of this one.

Review: While David Bowie's talents were many, it was his skills as a musician, a composer and a performer which were, and indeed remain, the most celebrated of the great man's gifts. But Bowie was a self-taught intellectual too, a thinker of unparalleled originality and, quite probably, the best-read rock star of all time. He was also a talented speaker, an enormously absorbing conversationalist and someone you just know you could have had a damn good chat with, if only the opportunity had arisen. When these faculties are combined, as they are throughout the recordings here, some of the most stimulating archive film available on the boy from Beckenham is revealed. This double DVD set concentrates on David Bowie's spoken word video recordings, collating as it does more than 3 hours of the Thin White Duke in interview, in conversation, in conference and when simply having a bit of a natter! Intriguing and enthralling throughout, this set features both classic and rare footage, which all at once make it a must-have compilation for Bowie fans the world across.

Every once in a while you get hold of an album with a title that couldn't be more fitting. Pioff? is one of those moments. Quite what this music is, or where it comes from, is anyone's guess on first impressions, making for perhaps the best use of a question mark we have seen in some time. As jaunty and upbeat as it is robotic and regimented, here's proof that German funk is all about that mechanical strut.
Whether it's 'Pass Auf!', a track that boasts one of the most infectious stepping beats you could ask for, the sublime e-funk pop of 'In Der Nacht', or the woozy guitar and synth odyssey 'Schau Dich Doch An', the fact of the matter is Pioff make tunes that could have been made at any time in human history - past or future. Kraut-slo-mo-chug-electro-groove might be one way to put it.

Review: Mike Dred's contributions to acid and rave culture overall are monumental, although he's largely operated outside any specific scene trends (perhaps excepting the misfit community orbiting Rephlex Records). In 2013 he dropped a fresh salvo of lysergic bombs in the form of Overmind, which has been dutifully scrubbed up for a fresh pressing on silver wax courtesy of De:tuned, one of the labels keeping the braindance dream alive. From the jacking 303 workout of 'Sociosexual' to the wet-as-you-like mutant electro of 'Psychoatomic', this is a collection which manages to be both immediate and utterly idiosyncratic. No one does it quite like Mike Dred.

Review: Beatles fans have been waiting for this one for a while and now it is finally here. It was the legendary Liverpool band's seventh album and it came in August 1966. As ever it was an experimental and cutting-edge work of pop rock, indie and psychedelic sounds that was a critical and commercial success. Some of the awards it won include Grammy Award for Best Album Cover as well as being admitted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Review: Richard von der Schulenburg is the much loved resident DJ at the Golden Pudel club in Hamburg and he has been since 2005. He makes disco, house and techno but is also an ambient craftsman with a new age disposition. Bureau B snap him up here for nine tracks of lush and melodic electronic music that is detailed and engaging. There are gentle xylophone sounds on the opener, while 'Caravan Of The Pentamatics' gets more mystic and otherworldly with its curious leads. 'DX7s Broken Hearts' is the sound of a machine in love and 'Planet Dragon' pairs edgy synth sounds with gypsy beats.

Review: Amsterdam DJ, producer and radio broadcaster DJ Marcelle serves up a second album with Berlin label 'Play Loud! Productions. It is one filled with unique rhythms and rich sound designs that sound like nothing else, all with a D.I.Y. attitude at their heart. There is rhythmic and stylistic freedom here right from the off. 'This Record Is Scratched' is a bouncy workout with bright synths and drilling bass. 'Voted Best DJ School (25% Off)' is a minimal and abstract cut while 'Soups On Tour' is weird and hypnotic tackle for the afters. 'The Quarantine House Party Try-Out' is a whirr of malfunctioning machines and 'Smacznego' is sixteen minutes of experimentalism.

Review: The reviews that followed the recent release of Kendrick Lamarr's first album in five years, Mr Morale & The Big Steppers, were universally positive. Of course, he's always been one of hip-hop's most insightful and thought-provoking MCs, with a passion for utilising backing tracks that sidestep hackneyed rap tropes and lazy samples, but even by his high standards this album is something special - as this differently packaged Japanese edition proves. Impeccably produced, with countless musical twists and turns, spellbinding instrumentation and all manner of guest stars, it sees Lamarr lyrically signposting his own failings and character flaws within a wider framework of accountability. It's brave but brilliant, with some of the topics covered including his relationship with money, his father, gender and generational trauma. A genuinely landmark album.

Review: How long has Billy Idol been doing it for? Who can even count any more, but here he is bursting back onto the airwaves with his canny blend of hard rock and anthemic pop hooks, sounding like the maximalist 80s juggernaut he's always been. 'The Cage' is a chugging, sing-a-long monster with enough rousing self-help energy to border on sports rock. If you've loved Idol and the musical world he exists in all these years, you'll be very happy to hear every inch of this mighty four-track single. Epic rock without parallel.
