Loosefingers EP1 (12" repress)
Cat: ML 2221. Rel: 11 Apr 24

Deep House
Glancing At The Moon (5:35)
Lamentation (6:48)
Deep Inside (8:26)
Review: Alleviated's Larry Heard reissue series has previously brought us the rough and tough acid of Gherkin Jerks and, more recently, the intergalactic downtempo grooves of his largely overlooked Alien LP. Here, they revisit one of Heard's later aliases, Loosefingers, dusting down and reissuing tracks from 2003's Glancing at the Moon EP. All three tracks are deep, warm and melodious in typical Heard fashion, with the title track delivering a sultry blend of wide-eyed chords, darting electronics, Latin-influenced percussion and tactile keys. "Deep Inside" delivers a hazy, sun-kissed take on soulful house - all jazz bass, sensual chords and gentle vocals. Best of all, though, is the tougher, synth-heavy "Lamentation", which rolls along at a near techno-tempo and is blessed with thrilling bleep melodies.

All This Love That I'm Givin' (3:53)
Maybe I'll Find Somebody New (3:25)
Review: For those of a certain age, Gwen McRae's "All This Love That I'm Givin" will always evoke memories of Cassius' French Touch classic "Feeling For You", which sampled it heavily. It remains a killer record in its' own right, though, as this timely reissue proves. Originally released in 1979, it sees McRae at her powerful best, delivering a potent message to an errant lover over a killer, low-slung disco-funk groove. It's one of the tracks that should really be in any discerning funk, soul or disco DJ's collection. Flip for original B-side "Maybe I'll Find Somebody New", a breezier chunk of laidback soul with a slightly Southern lilt. It's good, but pales into insignificance compared to the brilliant 'A' side.

Review: Out as a reissue through the same label that put it out way back in 1971, the aptly named Dig, Friday, Saturday & Sunday appear on our shelves like nothing's happened, and we're still here wandering what the hell happened! "Potato Salad" is a hard nugget to find as an original, but its also such a groovy, light-hearted tune that is a perfect example of why disco was what it was, and why it was so fun - a super recommended tune. "There Must Be Something" is equally good and powerful when played out, and although it doesn't have the same charm as the A-side, it's still a rocking soul classic.

Be There In The Morning (1976 version)
Review: Athens Of The North represent one of Australia's finest soul exponents Renee Geyer. "Be There In The Morning" comes in two forms... The 1977 version will be recognised from her most successful album of the time Moving Along. An upbeat fusion of soul and funk with mild disco nuances, it comes with confident orchestration and an instantly infectious, ultimately emphatic chorus. The real coup here, however, is the softer, dreamier earlier version that's so rare it never left the confines of her native country. It's digging like this that makes the young-but-hugely-potential rare music label Athens Of The North a very exciting prospect for record collectors.

DJ Koze - "Driven" (6:37)
Robag Wruhme - "X-mop 198" (5:02)
Review: Pampa offshoot Hart & Tief launched earlier in the year, via a split 12" featuring tracks by Soulphiction and Mike Denhert. This time round, fellow German producers DJ Koze and Robag Wruhme are at the controls. Koze kicks things off with "Driven", a clanking, booty-shaking fusion of metallic percussion hits, resonating electronics, dub techno motifs, and minimalist textures. It feels a little like a contemporary Berlin take on early '90s Sheffield "clonk" (think Sweet Exorcist's Clonk's Coming album on Warp), which is no bad thing in our book. Wruhme's "X-mop 198" is a much more straightforward, early morning techno bubbler, albeit with similarly clanking percussion hits amongst the thumping kick drums and restless, one-note riffs.

Tympanic Warfare (9:39)
Review: Theo Parrish lays down a marker for a long overdue fifth album, apparently due out later this year, with the sublime Footwork 12". Named in reference to the dance as opposed to the breakneck offshoot of Ghetto House, "Footwork" is a sublime slab of Theo with many of his trademark production touches. Think lightly brushed percussion, meandering bassline that juts out with an odd funk, and subtle yet sumptuous musical touches, all topped off by a gruff "let me see your footwork baby" croon. Those Theo fans out there that like the man to get a bit rugged will be all over "Tympanic Warfare" too, where off the grid polyrhythms cannon around the channels, augmented by an ugly bassline and dexterous keys.

Review: Shout outs to Larry Heard for finally relenting to the numerous requests to reissue his highly prized Gherkin Jerks material through his own Alleviated label with some digitally enhancement help from the guys at Clone. The 1990 EP was the last of the two EPs that Heard anonymously released under the Gherkin Jerks name back in the late 80s as a creative experiment. Notably less unhinged than Stomp The Beat, the six percussively taut tracks here feel like Heard was reacting to the nascent strains of techno emanating from Detroit. Opener "Meltdown" for example is a rolling slab of pitched-down techno with sharp Motor City-esque synth stabs and nagging, incessant keys, whilst the interplanetary connotations are clear as crystal on tracks such as the beautifully chiming "Red Planet" and the pressurised funk of "Saturn V".

Review: Somewhat surprisingly, the "Ah-Free-Ka EP" marks 4hero man Marc Mac's first appearance on Cooperation, the label established by the crew behind legendary West London broken beat night Co-Op, since 2007. Given the label, the veteran producer is in a bruk-up kind of mood, kicking things off with the polyrhythmic broken rhythms, vocoder vocals, jaunty synth riffs and weighty sub-bass of "Ah-Free-Ka". The track's not too subtle old school electro influences are explored further on hybrid bruk/electro/Afro-funk jam "In The Jungle", while "Bruda Fela" is little less than a contemporary broken beat tribute to Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Review: It's been 22 years since the release of I-F's razor-sharp Dutch electro anthem, "Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass". Given the upsurge in interest in electro of late, it's little surprise to see the man himself offering up this reissue, which is focused around two previously digital-only revisions that first landed back in 2010. Stretched out across the A-side is the brilliant - and undeniably mind-altering - "XL Remix", a nine-minute revision that gives greater prominence to the producer's twisted electronic riffs, industrial strength melodies and dusty drum machine percussion. This time round, it comes accompanied by both a vocoder-free Instrumental take and "Pong's Run", a lesser-known collaboration with Intergalactic Gary that's slow, spacey, out-there and thoroughly intoxicating.

Loneliness (I-F & Alden Tyrell - live at CBS Micro Party Stubnitz 2006) (7:57)
Review: No, don't worry, Gove and Boris haven't found their way into cosmic disco or twisted acid house....The Conservatives were a brief project for Dutchmen John Scheffer (aka Intergalactic Gary) and Unit Moebius pioneer Ferenc van der Sluijs (aka I-F) around the early 2000s. "Loneliness" was their only single and it still sounds beautiful 13 years later. "Loneliness" is a chunky but altogether trippy slice of what we would now call disco but just called house back then while I-F and Alden Tyrell's remix comes with much more 303 crunch. Well matured and still highly relevant.

Review: Old school meets new school here, as French techno stalwart Laurent Garnier joins forces with rising star Chambray for a cheery, glassy-eyed workout on Rekids. In its original form, "Feelin' Good" is a rushing chunk of piano-driven techno positivity, where sparkling riffs, fuzzy analogue electronic motifs and nagging electronics burst through a tough but squeezable techno beat. It should be an essential listen for all those hankering after something that recalls the celebratory glee of the early '90s while sounding suitably contemporary. Label boss Radio Slave steps up to remix, first re-imagining it as a dreamy but powerful jack track, before embracing his inner hardcore hero on a breakbeat and piano-heavy flip that's as rush-inducing as triple dropping the strongest happy pills around.

Before then, the latest in an ongoing series of celebratory 12" releases sees Hood look to the classic Protein Valve, which was the first 12" issued on M Plant back in 1994. The title track has already been subject to some edits as part of this M Plant 20 series, but it's nice to see three tracks from that original 12" reissued here as a reminder how Hood's pioneering minimal approach first took shape. Look out for new Hood production "Analog Track (Ghost)" wedged in amongst the protein too!

Review: The latest transmission of M Plant's 20th Anniversary celebrations sees label boss Robert Hood come through with some self styled 'replants' of recent Floorplan material. "Never Grow Old" of course originates from Hood's triumphant 2013 Floorplan LP Paradise, arriving midway through and impressive enough to feature in Ben Klock's Fabric mix. Here the gospel vibes remain but they are complemented by a searing Motor City key line that is really quite hypnotic over it's seven minute duration. Complementing this is a replant of "Phobia", one of Hood's last releases of 2013 which evens out the hoover rave overtones of the original in favour of some trippy synth loops that prove just as effective.

Review: When Broom met Hood! To celebrate M Plant's 20th anniversary, Robert Hood is planning a whole host of events and releases including a sequence of 12"s that see classics and rarities remixed and edited. Who better to inaugurate the series than Hood's UK contemporary Mark Broom? Here Broom digs deep into the M Plant archives, choosing to work with "Untitled 1" from Hood's Moveable Parts series and "One Touch" from the Minimal Nation album. Canvas Hood fans and the majority will probably nominate the first edition of the Moveable Parts series as one of their favourites, so it's little surprise that Broom elected to add his own signature dirty funk to the opening track for this 12". His edit of Minimal Nation opener "One Touch" proves to be just as effective, playing toyfully with the bassline whilst dicing the beats with undoubtedly dark results.

Review: Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish does a fine job of keeping the majority of his vast back catalogue available to buy for all. It's a tough job, too, cause most of it sells out in a quick fashion, so he has to be on the ball with reissues. A couple are landing this month and 'You Forgot' is one of them. It was his label's 15th release way back in 2001 and for many, b-side cut 'Dirt Rhodes' is one of Parrish's best and most definite tracks. The grinding mechanical grooves that lock you into a hypnotic state are overlaid with perfectly knackered-sounding Rhodes chords and it makes for a magical listen. 'You Forgot' with its soulful vocal musings and perfunctory drum sounds is not bad either.

Review: Detroit's Theo Parrish continues to serve up expressive and utterly unique new music, but his vast back catalogue will always remain of almost just as much interest to house heads. As such his Sound Signature label has repressed some quality gems from his discography. 'Roots Revisited' first came back towards the tail end of 1998 and finds the sonic shaman in heavy percussive mode while off-grid rhythms and his unique take on soul shining through. 'Dan Ryan' is deeply meditative, while the 'Walking Thru The Sky' (feat Ron Smith - Liberation mix) is a dusty and scuffed-up deep house exploration with Theo's trademark keys.

Review:  Looking back it's been a killer year for DJ Haus and his pair of labels, Unknown to the Unknown and Hot Haus, and it seems like he won't be easing the gears down from "unfcknrelenting" now December has arrived. The latest Hot Haus release (the sixth issued since September!) sees a welcome return for whippersnapper producer Palace whose Vision 12" is the third record issued on the UTTU offshoot in a year! If you liked previous Palace records, you love the three tracks here which are all raw and effective DJ tools sprinkled with immediacy, individuality and nagging basslines - "Solstice" in particular is a real burner of a track. Review: Throughout his mythical and somewhat enigmatic music career as an electro specialist, Gerald Donald has been prone to an alias or two. The Drexciya co-founder and co-member has released music as Arpanet, Japanese Telecom, Dataphysix and, more recently as Heinrich Muller, but this one EP he released as Glass Domain has been near impossible to find pretty much since its 1991 release date. The Clone connection is string with Donald, and the Dutch powerhouse has managed to both remaster and reissue this holy grail of Detroit electro. We're not going to describe these tracks to you, because they are above that; they're remnants of a movement that has influenced how we listen and dance to music nowadays, and they should be on every serious dance collector's shelf. Foundational Detroit electro that will be played by generations on end. Vitally recommended.

Kudos to I-F then for finally heeding these shouts and presenting a remastered edition for the masses. For the uninitiated, this 12" features classic Hague cuts from I-F and Jungian Archetype, another alias of the Viewlexx boss, with all four perfect for introducing a sense of bedlam to the dancehall. This release, Accidental Meetings, inaugurates the new label. Starting off with the dusty, soulful and emotive title track which is reminiscent of classic Nick Holder with its sultry vocals atop, they're then into some emotive hi-tech soul on "North Pole Cafe". But they save the best for last with the great vibes of "United Identities" which channels that same life affirming groove as their recent track "Natural Taboo" on the Craigie Knowles compilation: only this one gets some serious Latin rhythms happening much like Joe Claussell circa "Je Ka Jo". Choice!

His "Extended Disco Version" of Lapsley's "Operator" quickly became a White Isle anthem in the summer of 2016, and we fully expect "Pick Up" to be one of the disco-house hits of 2018. Based around spine-tingling samples from a heart-felt, orchestrated 1970s disco treat - think Tom Trago's "Use Me Again", and you're close - the veteran producer slowly builds the pressure before really letting loose in the closing stages. B-side "The Love Truck" is an altogether deeper, dubbier and dreamier affair, seemingly designed for leisurely warm-up sets and gentle, early morning shuffling.

It's a split EP featuring work from Steve Parks and Steve Marhsall and will cost you a few quid for an original on the seance hand market. Review: The E-Beamz label recently debuted with a fine 12" of jungle-influenced haziness from Tim Shug and DJ Playstation. Here, they swiftly move on to EP number two, showcasing tracks from debutants DJ Boring and Magma. The former's A-side cut, "Winona" - so called because it utilizes vocal samples from an interview with actress Winona Ryder - sounds like a long-lost early '90s cut: an ultra-deep treat full of deep space chords, analogue deep house beats and psychedelic TB-303 abuse. Magma's dustier flipside cut, "You", explores similar old skool pastures, making use of both barnstorming techno drums and sweaty jungle breaks. Throw in ridiculously deep chords and riffs, and some eyes-closed vocal samples, and you have another late night winner.

They proved so popular they quickly sold out and so the today 7" has now been repressed. 'Hit & Run' is exactly as it should sound based on the title - a soundtrack to a high-speed car chase in a 60s movie. 'Apache' then rattles and rolls with busy Latin percussive flair, tumbling drums and a sunny flute lead packed with joy. Both of these will inject any set with next-level vibes.

"Changes" kickstarts the EP with a thumping disco piece that hits with northern soul energy while "Give Me Hot" has some of the most honied harmonies and peppiest sax you'll hear on wax this summer. Finally "Cosmic Factory" closes with the deep, spacey outer-planetary salute its name suggests. Watch out for those drums!

Review: Following a nine-month break, Leo Pol returns with another pleasingly varied collection of deep house treats. The Parisian producer begins in confident mood, doffing a cap to both classic New Jersey garage and Inner City era Detroit house on the bustling "Montreal Cotton Candy". He reaches for the filters on the warm, hazy and high-tempo bump of "The Luuve Juice" [sic], before expertly combining rubbery acid lines, positive synthesizer melodies, electro-tinged house beats and a sleazy vocal from pal Mark on loved-up EP highlight "Sex In The Kitchen". Finally, he showcases his sampling capabilities via the funk-tinged deep house hustle of closer "Chantal", featuring his own distinctively Parisian vocals.

Review: Following 2017 and 2018 outings on Concrete Music and Bass Culture Records, French producer Leo Pol returns to the Iile imprint he founded in 2016. There's plenty to admire across the five included tracks, from the rubbery acid bass, sweaty drums and glassy-eyed melodic breakdowns of opener "626 Mafia", to the sturdy beats, hustling drum fills, filter-laden chords and sweet vocal samples of closing cut "Keep This Thing". Leo's collaboration with Max Ulis, "On My Face", is a thrillingly high-octane fusion of ghetto-house, techno and woozy New Jersey garage, while "FEM" is an acid-flecked chunk of sun-kissed deep house breeziness that sounds like it could have been made in Italy in 1992.

Review: By now we should know that Chaos In The CBD barely gets it wrong. In fact, we can't think of one duff moment in their rapidly expanding discography. Certainly, there's much to set the pulse racing throughout the Multiverse EP, which happens to be their first missive of 2018. We're particularly enjoying the Adonis-goes-deep bassline, becalmed chords, druggy acid lines and bongo-laden beats of opener "Multiverse" and the humid tropical house hustle of B-side opener "Kaitaia Fire" - deep and woozy, yet percussively adventurous - but the whole EP is superb. The other two cuts, "Double Dribble" and "Drum Therapy", are altogether deeper and calmer, with the latter also feeling wonderfully hypnotic in tone, too.

Review: There can be few better ways to get your 2023 off to a banging start than by dropping this one onto your deck. Bordello A Parigi always deal in superb Italo disco sounds and this is another case in point - G Race's 'On Fire' surges out of the speakers on bright, buoyant melodies that zip about the skies with all the energy of a collapsing star. Sheet metal perfusion and corrugated rhythms all add to the power. A textured breakdown version is also included and so too an instrumental.

Review: Penny Goodwin's material is hard enough to come by in LP format, but the 7"s really are a sight for sore eyes. Luckily, we got Athens Form The North on our side, a stupendous soul and funk reissuer that has been delivering some serious heat over the last three years. "Too Soon You're Old" is a 1973 soul charmer, full of mystique and sensuality, the track moves slowly but with a great deal of funky swing to its bass. "Lady Day & John Coltrane" is a different kind of swinger, an uptempo funk ballad backed by flurries of organs and drum rolls, whereas "What's Going On" heads down a spiritual jazz tip to complete what is the most diverse soul single we've got to offer this week!

Le Disco Des Capitales (6:45)
Review: Sounds like it came out of Lagos in 1971, actually written and recorded in Lyon in 2015: Voilaaa is the brainchild of Bruno Hovart whose long relationship with Favorite goes way back to his days as Patchworks, Mr President and The Dynamics. Recording on a whole host of vintage machines and calling upon local African singers both cuts have a real authentic sense of realness; "Spies Are Watching Me" drives with big horns and swooning strings which isn't dissimilar to the work of The Movers, while the TY Boys-esque "Le Disco Des Capitales" is a heavier, more concentrated slab of floor-minded disco where the groove takes more of a forefront role. Apparently there's a whole album of this cooking... We can't wait to hear it.

Review: Said to be discovered and championed by a young Daniele Baldelli, this track from 1983 has been defined as a cosmic classic. The work of producer Steve Coe and his partner Sheila Chandra as Monsoon, they combined elements of dub, dance and ethnic music, mainly released through their Indipop label. Their mesmerising and majestic track 'The Dream' is featured on this reissue by Emotional Rescue, as well as an edit of original B-side cut 'Meditasian' featuring a sublime sitar solo which will hypnotise you into submission, but cut down by a good 20 minutes compared to the original.

I Feel Him Moving (6:15)
Review: While Robert Hood's Floorplan records have always been exciting and on-point, they have somehow got even better since his daughter Lyric joined him in the studio in 2015. The pair's latest gospel-sampling release is particularly potent, with both cuts sounding like peak-time anthems in waiting. We're particularly excited by A-side 'So Glad", a killer mixture of thumping techno grooves, dreamy deep house pads, looped piano snippets and brilliantly cut-up gospel vocals. That's not to say that the B-side is much weaker, though; in fact, with rasping preacher vocals, bustling Chicago house beats, mind-mangling organs and insatiable drum fills, it's arguably even bigger.

Tell You No Lie (8:31)
Review: A taster for Robert Hood's second Floorplan album, this EP puts a spotlight on the radical nature of his musical transformation. On "Music", the visceral rhythms of techno minimalism are gone; in their place is a rolling, tracky groove that boasts a repetitive vocal loop and which has shades of classic Relief /Derrick Carter. "Tell You No Lie" is even more impressive. It sees Hood use a gospel vocal over a stomping, funk guitar-sampling disco house workout. There is an audibly religious dimension to "Tell You No Lie," but Hood's knack for writing a great tune means that it sounds celebratory rather than self-indulgent or preachy.
