The Jackson 5 - "The Love You Save" (Del Gazebo & Aldo Vanucci Soul Flip edit) (4:19)
Joy Lovejoy - "In Orbit" (Del Gazebo & Aldo Vanucci Soul Flip edit) (3:54)
Review: Two hearty party starters from Gazebo & Vanucci. On the A we dig deep into golden era Motown with The Jackson 5's fourth number one single. Swinging breaks, Jackson's falsetto and some classic scat backing vocals from the rest of the Jackson clan, it's a lesser known thriller "The Love You Save". On the B we go back three more years to 67 for Joy Lovejoy's debut on Chess subsidiary Checker. A relentless northern soul jam with urgent vocals from Joy backed up by supreme horn action, it's another expert edit from the Soul Flip stable.

I Must Be Doing Something Right (2:43)
Fight Fire With Fire (2:51)
Review: Scorching soul heat from Atlanta: once-married couple Delia Gartrell and James Shaw (best known as The Mighty Hannibal) unleashed a short-but-singeing run of 45s around the late 60s/early 70 and here are two of their hottest moments. "I Must Be Doing Something Right" comes with a belting gospel backing chorus and a nagging hook you've definitely felt before. "Fight Fire With Fire" is even hotter; fuzzy electronic guitar, orchestral backing and a staccato chorus that brings floors to their knees, this is nothing short of essential.

Karate (part 1) (2:14)
Karate (part 2) (2:38)
Review: Little is known about obscure Seattle combo Mr Clean & The Cleansers, other than that they release one single, "Karate", on a label called Camelot sometime in the mid 1960s. The single has previously been included on a couple of similarly obscure CD compilations put together by crate digging DJs, but this is the first time it has been given a worldwide release on vinyl. "Karate (Part 1)" sets the tone, delivering a fiendishly fuzzy, martial arts themed chunk of Detroit style seemingly inspired by Stevie Wonder classic "Uptight". The flipside "Part 2" version is a little looser, with improvised, freestyle vocals and even more righteous horn lines.

How Can I Get In Touch With You (2:44)
Review: New Jersey's RDM Band are perhaps not the most productive of bands to come out of the US' 60s soul sound but, looking back fast things, they certainly had a powerful impact on the scene. Proudly and masterfully, as always, the mighty Tramp imprint have gone and found the band's recordings from 1969, spear-headed by Milton Campbell's iconic voice. Both "Give Up" and "How Can I Get In Touch With You" are utterly timeless examples of what American soul has to teach the world even 40 years after its inception, and you might wanna act fast given just how in-demand the original version of this 7" has become!

Forget Me Not (Rob Hardt remix) (4:30)
Promises (Smoove remix) (4:19)
Review: Rising London contemporary soul man Myles enjoys two superb floor-ready edits on Legere: US composer Rob Hardt refocuses "Forget Me Not", Sanko's heartfelt exploration of Alzheimer's disease. Adding a warm groove that's laced with just the right amount of orchestrated restraint, it's the perfect balance of weight, depth and funk. Flip for Smoove's upbeat flip on "Promises". Emphasising the breaks of the original with some deft drum arrangement, Smoove creates great space in the mix for every element to sit comfortably; Sanko's crucial vocals, the crisp guitar and light-touched keys. On-point.

Steppin' Stone (2:09)
Helpless Girl (3:15)
Review: Predictably, Tramp's latest killer reissue comes from an artist that very little is known about. The sought-after "Steppin' Stone" (an original copy will set you back three figures) is little Mary Staten's only known release, and first appeared on the short-lived GME imprint sometime in the 1960s. The title track is predictably fuzzy - the kind of impassioned, on-point soul cut that Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings spent a career trying to capture. On the flip you'll find the equally impressive "Helpless Girl", a gospel-influenced, organ-rich slow jam in which Staten recounts the heartache felt after discovering the behaviour of an errant, bad-boy lover.

Review: More cheeky 45 party power from Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo as they hit their third Soul Flip edit release of the year. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas 1968 letter to gabber DJs of the future "I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing" gets a subtle stomp in the beat department while Sugar Pie Desanto's 1966 R&B pant swinger "Go Go Power" gets the extension its also deserved. Connie Laverne - "Can't Live Without You" (2:44)
The Anderson Brothers - "I Can See Him Loving You" (2:44)
Review: This essential soul 7" brings together two exceedingly hard-to-find 1970s classics for the very first time. On the A-side you'll find Connie Laverne's deliciously sweet and soaring "Can't Live Without You", a 1974 cut that sits somewhere between classic dancefloor soul and the then emerging Philadelphia International, proto-disco sound. On the flip you'll find another low-down, orchestrated slice of proto-disco perfection from New Jersey duo the Anderson Brothers. While nowhere near as tricky to track down as Laverne's A-side, "I Can See Him Losing You" is nevertheless similarly inspired and should be in the collection of every serious soul enthusiast.

"Needed You" is a straight up northern soul thumper with relentlessly driving beat, gutsy vocals, big piano rolls and crucial flutes while "Sicka" takes us right back to the sixties with a fiery ode to a greenback classic. Review: According to Athens of the North's useful liner notes, Penny Goodwin is Milwaukee's "unsung queen of jazz". Accompanied by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, she recorded her one and only album, Portrait of a Gemini, in 1974. Since then it's become something of an in-demand item, hence this timely CD reissue from Euan Fryer's laudable imprint. It features a mix of original songs and covers - including a fiendishly up-tempo jazz interpretation of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" - with Goodwin's impeccable, emotion-rich voice coming to the fore. Musically, there are as many nods to conscious soul and Hammond-heavy funk as classic jazz, but that's no doubt part of the album's enduring appeal.

Review: Mid 70s soul and funk from the little-known Walter Jenkins. Originally pressed on Apollo off-shoot Faderkat, original pressings have been known for pass hands for a few hundred and it's not hard to understand why: "Back In My Life" is a swooning soul ballad with enough strut to move a floor while "Funky Walk (The Money Talk)" is a pumping northern crossover with big band leader style orders from Walter himself. Shake your money makers.

Review: The Gene Dudley Group's debut album, Zambidoose, included one of the highlights of Summer 2015 - a righteous, brass-heavy funk cover of Todd Terje's nu-disco anthem "Inspector Norse". Here, other tracks from that set are given a new lease of life via three new remixes. Alexander Lay-Far kicks things off, subtly turning "Do The Cookie Dough Throw" into a righteous chunk of swinging, offbeat Latin house/funk fusion. In contrast, mixing desk maestro Wrongtom delivers a booming, bass-heavy dub reggae interpretation of "Tiger Jaw", while BJ Smith goes all warm, organic and Balearic on his invitingly sunny mix of "Jackpot", complete with dreamy vocals from Anne Frankenstein.

Review: One of Finnish funk imprint Timmion's most enduring stories; Pratt & Moody and Cold Diamond & Mink's 2017 "Lost Lost Lost" gets an update with Gerald McCauley. Not particularly known for his singing or songwriting (but very much active in other aspects of the industry) the original's raw blues struck a chord so strong in him, he put pen to paper and dulcets to tape to provide a new perspective on the track. The results speak for themselves. There's no wondering here... It's a full blown heartache conclusion.

"If You Dance Tonight" is unashamed boogie fusion with fun lyrics and a slap bass line so rude it will make you blush. "Say Yea" is a classic 80s ballad delivered with Lionel levels of smoothness. A proper end-of-night, grab-your-coat gem. Limited to 500 copies, no represses.

But, Athens Of the North have managed to get their hands on the masters of a super-rare Virtue 7" that goes for no less that L1000 on the second-hand market in its original form. "Listen" is a deep, sublimely odd little funk tune that is as deep as you can get for boogie and funk; "Party" on the flip is no less of a gem, backed by Little George's supreme vocals and a tight little break, too. Sick.

Review: After releases on Goodgroove and Riddim Fruit, The Allergies, aka Bristol nu-funk duo DJ Moneyshot and Rackabeat, found a welcome home in Jalapeno for their debut album, As We Do Our Thing, which was released earlier this year. Vinyl fans sore at the lack of the album in their preferred format will find consolation in the fact two gleaming highlights now feature on this 45 for Jalapeno. Up top, the smart soul sampling and tight breakbeat patterns of "Love's Supposed To Be" represent all that is good about the party-starting style of The Allergies, whilst "As We Do Our Thing" is a more midtempo horn funker.
