Funk
  1. Eko - "M'Ongele M'Am"
  2. Georges Ouedraogo - "Deni"
Review: Mukatsuku's ongoing "Afro Series" continues with a fine limited edition 45 containing two funk-fuelled floor-fillers. In fact, you'll struggle to find a more celebratory and life-affirming workout than Eko's "M'Ongele M'Am" licensed from Nubiphone & Africa Seven, a Makossa-fired Afro-disco gem rich in punchy horns, driving Afro-boogie bass, lilting synthesizer lines, Mariachi style trumpet solos and the kind of chant-along vocals that should put a smile on the face of even the most miserable of dancers. Over on side B, Georges Ouedraogo's "Deni" is an essential Clavinet-happy killer chunk of Afro-funk/Afro-Disco fusion from Burkina Faso. As played by Floating Points,The Allergies,Faze Action,Antal ,Lego Edits & Red Greg so far...

  2. Cold Diamond & Mink - "Wondering" (instrumental) (2:59)
Review: One of Finnish funk imprint Timmion's most enduring stories; Pratt & Moody and Cold Diamond & Mink's 2017 "Lost Lost Lost" gets an update with Gerald McCauley. Not particularly known for his singing or songwriting (but very much active in other aspects of the industry) the original's raw blues struck a chord so strong in him, he put pen to paper and dulcets to tape to provide a new perspective on the track. The results speak for themselves. There's no wondering here... It's a full blown heartache conclusion.

  1. Peter Yamson - "Everybody Dance" (3:51)
  2. Tala Am - "Get Up Tchamassi" (3:11)
Review: Mukatsuku's long running "Afro Funk & Disco Gems" series has always been a reliable source of obscure, high-quality dancefloor material from the African continent. This tenth edition is another must-have - on the A-side you'll find the synth-laden, boogie-era sunshine of "Everybody Dance", one of the undisputed highlights of Peter Yamson's in-demand (and notably hard to find) "Son Of Africa" LP. With wonderful vocals, glistening guitars, lolloping drum machine beats and some stellar synth work, the track ticks all the right boxes. Over on the flip there's a chance to own Cameroon legend Tala Andre Marie's 1981 classic "Get Up Tchamassi", whose snaking sax lines, elastic slap bass and dreamy chords are nothing less than sensational. As played by The Allergies, DJ Koco, Joe Claussell,Smoov,Kalita, Faze Action,DJ Moar etc

  1. Easy Baby (4:25)
  2. Geriatric Dance (3:04)
Review: Dedicated to the Hammond-heavy 1960s soul-jazz sounds of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Grant Green and Reuben Wilson, the Beat Bronco Organ Trio are a fresh outfit with classic inspirations. The Madrid threesome's debut single is something of a retro-futurist treat. We're really enjoying A-side "Easy Baby", a loose and languid fusion of ear-pleasing Hammond licks, laidback, breakbeat-driven drums and flanged jazz guitars that impressively increases in intensity throughout, culminating in a frenzy of sweaty drums and eyes-closed guitar solos. "Geriatric Dance", meanwhile, is even more up-tempo, with high octane Hammond and jazz guitar solos stretching out over a feverish funk drumbeat.

Review: If you're a talented soul vocalist who wants an authentically fuzzy late 1960s sound, you could do worse than join forces with Timmion Records' in-house backing band, Cold Diamond & Mink. They're in fine form here providing admirable backing to rising star Carlton Jumel Smith. "Love Our Love Affair" is undeniably attractive, with Smith's confident and emotion-rich vocal rising above the band's hazy horns, languid trumpet solos, sun-bright guitar licks and lolloping, hip-hop style funk-soul beats. As is customary, the band's tidy instrumental version can be found - and enjoyed - on the flip.

Funk
  1. Try My Love (3:39)
  2. Odoya (feat Toco) (3:53)
Review: Stefano Tirone has been a stalwart of the Italian scene since making his debut on legendary Italian house label Calypso Records way back in 1992. Since then, his productions have become increasingly more jazz and soul focused, with a sizeable side order of groovy downtempo beats. His latest seven-inch single begins with "Try My Love", a hazy chunk of head-nodding jazz-funk/soul fusion rich in languid synthesizer solos, lazy grooves, hazy horns and soulful vocals. It's really good all told, though we'd argue that flipside "Odoya" - a wiggling chunk of Afro-tinged mid-tempo funk - is even better. Either way, it's another rock solid release from the effervescent Tirone.

  1. Funk Yourself
  2. Repartamos El Funky
Review: Mukatsuku struck gold again on this latest first time on a "45" issue. It boasts a couple of lesser-known jazz-funk fusion jams which originally featured on Argentine musician Jorge Navarro's 1977 album "Navarro Con Polenta", an LP that has never been issued outside of South America. A-side "Funk Yourself" is a bustling, high-octane jazz-funk Hammond licks and spiralling horns jumping above a Blaxploitation style backing track. "Repartamos El Funky" is a more laid back but no less musically intricate affair, with a variety of high-grade electric piano and guitar solos riding seemingly endless jazz style drum solos and rubbery bass. Juno hand-numbered copies come in exclusive sleeves and this 45 not be repressed. DJ Support comes from Ge-ology, Dom Servini, DJ Koco (Japan), DJ Food,The Allergies,45LIVE.net ,Dr Bob Jones,Rob Luis, Smoov and more

Review: In 2016 the Olympians - an all-star soul combo featuring members of The Dap-Kings, The Expressions and the Menahan Street Band - landed on Daptone with a fine debut album. Three years on, the Toby Pazner helmed group returns to action with a brand new "45". A-side "Midnight Movement" is a particularly sweet and ear-pleasing affair, with the band layering sweeping strings and lilting horn parts over a jaunty, piano-dominated instrumental soul groove. Over on side B, "Stand Tall" is a sharper, punchier and slightly funkier affair, with the band's fuzzy horns and fluttering flute solos rising above a Blaxploitation era-influenced backing track.

Review: So far, every collaboration between Timmion house band Cold Diamond & Mink and rising star Carlton Jumel Smith has been soulful gold. It goes without saying that their latest hook-up, "I'd Better", is another future soul classic. On the A-side version (taken from Smith's debut album "1634 Lexington Avenue"), Smith provides a raw, heartfelt and impassioned vocal over Cold Diamond & Mink's formidable backing track. This can be heard in all its glory on side B, where their 1960s soul style drum breaks, guitars, bass and fuzzy horns take centre stage.

Willie Harper's superior and original unreleased recording of Alan Toussaint dance classic "Here Comes the Hurt Again" which is made available on 7" vinyl for the first time goes up against Lee Dorsey's version of the same track. Whatever side you pick, both remastered recordings will take Soul revellers back to the heyday of the Northern Soul scene where the All-Nighter's dancefloor was the only place to hear the best, rarest and breaking sounds spun by the leading DJs. Here, it's the turn of Bobby Bland's "36-22-36", a heavy swinging and insanely catchy blast straight from 1962. Bland's voice is a perfect balance - cool as ice, but cracked around the edges - while the chorus line chants don't need a minute to get under your skin until you're singing along. "St James Infirmary" on the flip is a more downcast affair - one to drown your sorrows to, but certainly not the bottom of the bottle, as those hard stepping horns attest.

Review: The man with the Masterplan returns to Daptone after last year's "Casual Encounter". Once again it's a two-sides-two-vibes situation as the 30-year-standing funk veteran flexes his strengths. "Get With The Program" lives up to its name with total boogie badness, falsetto fire and a bassline so juicy Dapton's vaults have been flooded. "Heads Or Tails" flips to reveal Shorts' smoochier palette. Rich, honeyed vocals and a steamy message: everyone's a winner.

Review: Donny Hathaway's two live albums, 1976's "Live" and 1980's "In Performance", are arguably amongst his best full-length releases. That's partly due to the fact that he was a dynamic and full-throated performer, but also due to quality of his backing band and their ability to transform short album cuts into sweaty extended workouts. "These Songs For You Live" gathers together tracks from those two sets, adding a handful of other rare live tracks and previously unissued recordings. It's a superb set of atmospheric, addictive performances, with the jazzy "Flying Easy", gospel-fired "You've Got A Friend", sparkling Marvin Gaye cover "What's Goin' On" and the breathless "The Ghetto" standing out.

  2. Cold Diamond & Mink - "Woman You Made Me" (instrumental) (3:44)
Review: New York soul singer and performer CJ Smith links up with The Timmion Records studio band for another of his era-spanning singles. It's a golden affair with a luxurious sound that takes in soaring trumpets and squelchy keys. The rolling drums are airy and light and Carlton Jumel Smith turns in a fine performance, his slightly gravely voice delivering the vocals with real pathos's he pays tribute to the woman who made him. The flip has an instrumental version making this yet another tidy 7".

  1. The Boys In The Band - "Pain" (First Time On vinyl)
  2. Little Fint - "Pain"
Review: Upfront to Juno ! New Mukatsuku 45 from America Mid West with two versions of ''Pain'' with The Boys In The Band version never seeing a commercial vinyl release and in our opinion far superior ! Little Flint's wobby intro original version sells upwards of 400 GBP when you can find a clean copy. Hand-numbered to 500 units one off limited pressing.Strictly no repress

Wayne Perry & Randy Mcnutt decided to record a version of Pain in a power Soul Rock mode which were all the range in Cincinnati, Ohio at the time of the recording around 1973.The Boys In The Band version features Wayne singing solo but was never released. What was released was the Little Flint version (a name that Wayne had chosen as an alto ego guise ) and assisted with that version by an uncredited vocalist from Alaska singing live singing on top of the same rhythm track. Other band members included Roger 'Jellyroll' Troy on bass,Jerry Love on drums,Gary Boston on guitar,Craig Shenafield & Terry Burnside on brass (all five had played on sessions/backed James Brown at certain points in their careers) plus the young B-3 Organist Terry Hoskins who was just 17 at the time.DJ support from The Allergies so far..
