Review: The Killers have long-since divided opinion. Yes, tracks like 'Mr Brightside' will still fill dancefloors slick with WKD each and every Saturday night, beer boys and party girls and lost freaks and first-timers all joining together in one of the most memorable choruses of the century so far. But then their penchant for OTT pomp and pageantry has always been something of a stumbling block for many 'proper rock fans'. With that in mind, Pressure Machine could do wonders for breaking down barriers.
We're not in Kansas anymore, that's for sure, but instead Utah, and the small town of Nephi, where lead singer Bradley Flowers grew up. The album effectively takes us on a tour of what was and what probably still is, by way of a more salt of the Earth, somewhat intimate and narratively-driven collection of rock 'n' roll tracks that invoke a timeless sense of American guitar storytelling, albeit with some theatrics still intact.

I've loved his music since I first heard his album "wake" on Own Records, and he has released some lovely music on Lost Tribe Sound, Dronarivm and Gailur Records. On his fifth full length release, kj departs from the hypnotic refrains of his earlier work in favour of the limitless expanses and mysteries of the cosmos, particularly exemplified by the ebb and flow of the 19 minute track "silverine" and the gorgeous orchestral closing track "waters".

Those who actually appreciate the barroom-takes-on-stadia vibe will no doubt unanimously vote for tracks like 'Fever', with its dirty undertow and intimidatingly unapologetic march. Others might be too blinded by the riffs of 'Eat Me Alive'. Whichever Side of the fence you fall, at the end of the day, just like Tia Carrere, they wail.

There's a pride and lack of repentance that comes with the formative-era heavy metal bands you don't see so much in the majority of other rock groups. One that simply says "this will bang", swills from a beer bottle, then resides itself to sweaty, heads down rhythms. This album may or may not define that for you, but that's besides the point. Review: American rock band Melvins' first ever acoustic album Five Legged Dog plays out for a whopping two and a half hours. It spans the entire career of the band and also includes a number of their unique covers of tunes by artists including The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper and Redd Kros. Elsewhere the group reinterpret their own material in new acoustic style and it makes for a wild and unthread listen that will surpass the expectations of all fans. It comes with its own foldout poster as well as four slabs of coloured vinyl with neat gatefold packaging.

Review: Pitura Freska's Na Bruta Banda album is 30 years old in 2021 so it gets a limited edition pressing on hand-numbered, super limited vinyl to mark the occasion. It's a wild record that collides ska, world, folk, dub, reggae and prog rock, as unlikely as that may sound, into a full flavour album packed with heat. This most unlikely of Italian collectives was from Venice, formed by "Sir" Oliver Skardy and released 10 albums between 1978 and 2002. All the lyrics are delivered in a Venetian dialect of Italian making it surely one for he only reggae records in the world to be in that language.

Review: Italian rapper Villabanks is only 21 years old but has a well formed sound. The young Villabanks has dedicated himself fully to rap since the age of 15 and after a load of self-produced singles and mixtapes published on streaming channels and digital stores, the rapper published his first album, Non lo so, in 2019. This follow-up take sin reggae ton, trap, classic hip hop sounds and fresh r&b sentimental and lovestruck. He packs plenty of tracks in here, all of which are short, but together they add up to a compelling listen.
