Review: Sugar by Stanley Turrentine is a timeless jazz record that epitomizes the more soulful elegance of the genre. Released in 1971, Turrentine's smooth tenor saxophone melodies dance effortlessly over lush arrangements to create an atmosphere of warmth and sophistication. The album's title track is a standout that showcases Turrentine's unparalleled improvisational skills and ability to convey emotion through his music. With its irresistible groove and infectious energy, this record continues to captivate audiences and solidifies Stanley Turrentine's legacy as one of the most influential figures in jazz history.

Review: Nina Simone has rather been written out of popular music history because of quite how confrontational and proudly Black she was. She was just as far ahead of her times musically too and this legendary album Baltimore shows why. It arrived with no promotion and no lead singles and so it was an utter commercial failure, but the sleuths of the internet have rediscovered it over the 45 years since its release and helped to make it a cult favourite now regarded as one of the best in her oeuvre. It has distinctive reggae production and of course plenty of beautiful vocals from Simone as she tackles songs written by Judy Collins, Hall & Oates, and Randy Newman.

Review: Donald Byrd's Street Lady was released originally in 1973, and at that point the American great had already penned some 20 odd albums. But the 70s marked his move into the funkier side of things and to this day, this album remains one of his most widely loved and important. It's a rich source of samples for a wide range of artists and the opening tune was used smartly by Detroit great Theo Parrish, while tunes like 'Miss Kane' and 'Sister Love' are still huge. Street Lady is as iconic now as it was back first time around with the same going for the experimental sounds of 'Witch Hunt, while 'Woman Of The World' ends on a gentle, euphoric stride.

Review: In a discography that is jam packed with high quality albums, Miles Davis's Sorcerer is one of the standouts. Now newly reissued by Music on Vinyl, it transports listeners into the heart of 1967's avant-garde jazz landscape when it was originally released as part of Davis's Second Great Quintet era. The music showcases the maestro's pioneering fusion of modal jazz and free improvisation from the enigmatic title track to the haunting Prince of Darkness. Davis and his ensemble craft a sonic tapestry that mesmerises with every note here and Wayne Shorter's evocative saxophone, Herbie Hancock's masterful piano, and Tony Williams's dynamic drumming all help make that so.

Review: American r&b and jazz fusion singer, arranger, musician, composer and conductor Dexter Wansel made an indelible impression with his debut album back in 1976, Life On Mars set a new standard for fusion sounds while also serving up what is still considered a space-funk classic. More than that, though, the album which was inspired by David Bowie's Life On Mars also has the seminal 'Theme From The Planets' on it - the drum beat from which is often said to be one of the foundational beats for the hip-hop scene that emerged soon after. As such it's not a shock to know that the record has been sampled endlessly by greats like Drake, Ice Club, Lil Wayne and Kanye. Stick this one on and prepare to be wowed all over again by Wansel's masterful use of his ARP 2600 synthesizer.

Review: Recognised as one of the most prolific jazz pianists of all time, Herbie Hancock played with greats such as Donald Byrd and Miles Davis. He was one of the first to embrace and master the electric piano. He bounced back and forth between his electronic and acoustic sound, touching upon almost every development in R&B, funk and jazz while retaining an original and distinctive voice. Fat Albert Rotunda is the eighth album by Hancock, released in 1969 and his first release for Warner Bros. since his departure from Blue Note Records. The music was originally done for the TV show 'Hey, Hey, Hey, It's Fat Albert' and was a noticeable change in style - incorporating soul music as the basis of his compositions.

Review: American fusion group Weather Report were only active for just over 15 years but amassed a fine discography and assured their legacy in that time. Saxophonist Wayne Shorter is the most well-known of the band's members and after starting out as an experimental and free improvising outfit they eventually got more funky and edgy with hints of r&b creeping into their sound. The band always made use of the layettes synth technology and were one of the defining acts of the jazz era of their time as a result. Their eighth album, 1978's Mr Gone, is one of their most loved and ended up at Number 1 on the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart.

Review: American jazz fusion outfits don't come much more venerated than Weather Report. Fronted by leader Joe Zawinul, the ensemble evolved subtly throughout their career and it was in 1974 that they dropped this album, Sweetnighter. It proved to be a little more funky and influenced by the emerging t&b of the day than its predecessors and it is also noted for being the last long player the band cut with original bassist Miroslav Vitous, as well as being the band's first album to make it into the Top 100 in the US charts of the day. It sodas as good now as ever on this nice heavyweight vinyl pressing.

Review: Idris Muhammad, a prominent American jazz drummer and bandleader, has left an indelible mark on contemporary music as one of its most sampled drummers. His 1976 album House Of The Rising Sun likely fuelled this reputation, thanks to Muhammad's impeccable rhythmic precision. Renowned for his tight, rubbery style, Muhammad's mastery shines through in the six long jazz-funk tracks on the LP. Each piece showcases his unwavering commitment to the craft, delivered with ultra-crisp quality. Despite his acclaim, it's doubtful Muhammad ever faced flying cymbals during his illustrious career, a testament to his undeniable skill and professionalism.

He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013. Produced with the legendary Jan Hammer (a former bandmate) and engineer Ken Scott in 1973, Spectrum was Cobham's first solo album after leaving his previous group Mahavishnu Orchestra. The album was heavily influenced by the music of Miles Davis, with whom Cobham had previously collaborated extensively. A seminal album of the jazz fusion scene. A Swiss resident since 1980s, Cobham now lives in Schoepfen, a canton near Bern.

Review: The genius of trumpeter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Theo Croker's work has always been his ability to meld more traditional spiritual jazz sounds - not to mention modal and post-bop - with elements of contemporary soul, R&B and hip-hop. "Star People Nation", Croker's first album for three years, continues this approach, flitting between starry, decidedly intergalactic workouts ("Have You Come To Stay", "Subconscious Flirtations & Titillations"), seductive vocal numbers (the twinkling jazz-soul of the Rose Gold voiced "Getaway Gold"), deep, head-nodding jams ("Wide Open", "Portrait Of William") and fizzing dancefloor escapades (the brilliant "Just Let It Ride" and off-kilter Afro-jazz epic "Alkebulan").

It arrived i 2007 as a fantastic debut record from the Grammy nominated artist and took listens on a deep journey through romantic emotions. As it travelled across space and time it offers up a shared human experience and focusses on love in al its forms - "love of a friend, love of a partner, love of a parent, love of yourself and a love of life". Review: Nazareth, Buffalo, Uriah Heap, Genesis, Black Sabbath, China, Razorlight, Chase & Status, Metallica - the list of huge names that have recorded for, and released on, Vertigo is very long, very established and unarguably impressive. But it all started with this rather trippy adventure into the then-unchartered landscape of a nascent, acid-hued rock & roll scene. Valentyne Suite is, if borrowed memory serves, a wonderful summary of just how fertile and explorative guitar music had become by 1969. At times it's cacophonous, in other moments almost ritualistic in its hypnotising layers and movements. The vocals are gruff, riffs wailing, but the overall feeling is one of lucidity and evolution. You can almost see the loose white clothing flailing in your mind's eye. A forgotten classic from a time when it was, apparently, pretty easy for things to be forgotten.

While that was a response to Attica prison riots in which 43 men were killed, this album from 1992 finds the civil rights activist, saxophonist and playwright serve up 11 lovely jazz ballads with support from pianist Horace Parlan, bassist Wayne Dockery and drummer Steve McRaven. Classics included in this most mellifluous and relaxing of albums are 'Embraceable You' and 'Georgia On My Mind' which show the unique skills of the great tenor saxophonist.

The American jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, and band leader very much shows off his improvisational skills on flugelhorn and trumpet while his sidemen Renato Chico on piano, Peter Herbert on bass, Dragan Gajic on drums and Tone Jansa on tenor sax do not disappoint either. The collective didn't waste any time in getting back in the studio to record a follow up and so came their magnificent Eastern Rebellion 2 just 12 months later. It is a frantic and classic set of free-form jazz from the group that consists of Cedar Walton on piano, Bob Berg on tenor-sax, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The four pieces that make up this album were all penned by Walton and cover plenty of ground from hard bop to straight jazz.

The keys feel light, whimsical and less precise than Brackeen's previous outings, 'Trinkets & Things' being more free-flowing and resulting in an exciting sound well deserved of a limited audiophile re-release for its upcoming 45th birthday, on heavyweight and numbered vinyl. This will be remembered as one of the best jazz pressings of the year.

Review: A whole bunch of Weather Report albums are being reissued at the moment and listening to them all reminds of the impact the US fusion group had. At first they were improvisational experts and free-jazz experimenters who eventually veered towards a more funky, r&b tinged sound. They always used the latest synth technology alongside the likes of Wayne Shorter's superb sax sounds. Their self titled album very much announced their arrival as a stunning avant guard debut in 1971. It was brave and brazen and full of imagination from a gifted set of musicians.

Review: Widely acclaimed and much loved American jazz fusion outfit Weather Report very much dominated the jazz landscape of the seventies and early eighties. It had an ever-rotating assembly of musicians throughout its history with the likes of Austrian keyboardist Joe Zawinul, American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Czech bassist Miroslav Vitous and American drummer Alphonse Mouzon. 8:30 is their second live album and it came in 1979, swiftly rising to No. 3 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart and also winning a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance. Zawinul wrote the majority of the tracks which are all freely improvised and escapist.

Review: Sorcerer is a 1967 album from the Miles Davis Quintet - the third of six albums the group recorded. The line-up is a who's who of the era, with Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on double bass and Tony Williams on drums. The only exception is the track 'Nothing Like You' which closes the album, originally recorded in 1962 with a wholly different line-up including Bob Dorough on vocals. It's considered one of the greatest albums of the Quintet's run, capturing a moment when Davis was moving on from trad bop and drawing on the writing talents of his peers in the group.
