Voltage controlled state variable filter module
Notes: Simultaneous high pass, low pass, and band pass outputs, all with a 12 dB/oct slope. The notch is the inverse of the bandpass, achieved by summing the low pass and high pass outputs. This version is a combination of the original SEM filter and the newer design from the OBX, along with improvements by SE. It has a modest current draw, which it pulls evenly from the plus and minus rails.

Potentiometer Potential:
Three attenuverter and four attenuation pots control the FREQUENCY, RESONANCE, FREQ CV 1, RESO CV, LP HP, INPUT and OUTPUT, delivering smooth, detailed, and complex expression.

Switch it Up:
FULL and HALF strength filter frequency keyboard/voltage tracking, and BP / LP-HP modes.

Patch it Up:

Both the Left and Right Channels feature Single Peak POLE and Dual Peak DIPOLE outputs.

The A input (LEFT) provides Normalization into the B input (RIGHT), allowing for a stereo image to be created from any monophonic signal source. All four A/B outputs can be utilized in stereo for more complex stereo filtering applications.

Pre-Filter Input DRIVE Control on each channel will push the input signal into heavy soft-clipping and saturation; adding Harmonic Content and increased low end for the VCFs to bite into. A Sine Wave can be over-driven enough to be useful with pleasing results.

RESONANCE may be nuanced or pushed all the way into Self-Oscillation across the entire bandwidth of 20+ Octaves.

All VCF cores Track 1V/OCT and Temperature Compensated.

The Stereo Dipole can fully function as a Single, Dual and Quad Sine Wave VCO/LFO.

The Series Routing configuration allows for additional tonal oscillation capabilities via the DIPOLE and DIPOLE AB outputs.

Notes: The Entity Percussion Synthesizer is a complete and versatile voice module, geared for designing a huge array of percussion, bass and lead sounds and well suited for processing external audio sources.

The design consists of a high fidelity resonant band pass filter, two voltage controlled decay envelopes, multi-mode noise generator, a high fidelity VCA and a voltage controlled diode wave multiplier. Every parameter on the Entity Percussion is voltage controllable.

Features and controls:

SOUND SHAPING:

BODY control simulates the tightness of a drum head. From soft and muted to flabby and bass heavy.

PITCH affects the frequency of the resonant filter. The nominal control range is from about 8Hz to 2.2kHz. This range is expanded upon use of internal and external control voltage sources.

HARMONICS increases the number of overtones heard via the main resonant sound source. Subtle to extreme. A substantial function of the Entity PS.

RING controls the resonant decay time, independently from the modulation controls. Both short and plucky and very long rings are obtainable. The filter is tuned so that it will always resonate a little, even when RING control is all the way down.

OUTPUT section controls the resonator volume level and the overall output level when NOISE-FILTER mode in enabled. MIX switch selects processing the internal resonator, external source via the EXT IN jack or a mix of both, greatly enhancing the sound capabilities of the Entity PS.

NOISE generator inspired by the Quantum Rainbow 2, with three select-able noise modes - WHITE, PINK and FILTER. FILTER mode routes the noise into the resonator's signal path - to be processed through the resonant filter, harmonics processor and main VCA.

N-LEVEL independently controls the volume and CV level of the noise VCA.

MODULATION:

Two voltage controllable decay envelopes are provided to modulate the frequency and/or volume of the resonator and noise. DECAY controls the FM/VCA decay time of the resonator, N-DECAY controls the VCA decay time of the noise generator.

DELAY provides voltage controlled delay of the resonator DECAY envelope with respect to the noise (N-DECAY) envelope - a useful feature for creating various snare, clap and snap sounds and layering internal and external sources.

FM LVL is a bipolar attenuator for controlling the frequency modulation depth of the resonator. The switch below selects the internal resonator decay envelope, a mix of the decay envelope and external FM CV source, or the external FM CV source only.

DUCK output jack provides an offset and inverted copy of the resonator DECAY envelope for ducking VCAs and other modulation duties.

The design consists of a high fidelity resonant filter, 2 stage slope generator (rise/fall) with independent slope shaping, a high fidelity VCA and discrete transistor saturation circuitry. Every parameter on the Entity Bass drum is voltage controllable.

By applying a trigger of any length and at least 2V amplitude, we excite the resonant filter to produce a percussive sine wave. The pitch control tunes the output with a range of 8Hz to around 2.2KHz. Both higher and lower levels are achievable using the FM input for modulation etc. The internal filter will track 3-4 octaves reliably and the tracking device is temperature compensated.

The slope generator (ENV) can be switched into the circuit via the 3 way switch below the FM LVL control. This control is a bipolar attenuator which affects the level of the slope generator and/or external modulator that affects the pitch of the output.
The 3 way switch selects FM, FM+ENV or just ENV as a mod source.

The rise/fall envelope is a two stage function generator. The controls provide slope timing from 1ms to about a minute. To the right of these controls is the shaping section where logarithmic, linear and exponential slope shapes are selected independently for the two envelope stages.

The envelope is designed to re-trigger at a set point. This allows for changing dynamics to occur to pitch and amplitude when the slope times are greater than the output transient time. For instance the sound can vary between any number of triggers that fire before the envelope set point is reached. Setting the slope time fast enough (below roughly 1 o'clock) provides for nominal operation. Settings will vary depending on trigger and ring decay timing.

The envelope can also be used exclusively or in a more complex patch via a direct +ENV output. Additionally, a novel DUCK output provides a means to control external VCAs - to work like slow compressors. DUCK is an inverted and positively offset version of the +ENV out. This keeps VCAs open when the envelope is off and effectively 'ducks' the VCA when the envelope fires. Of course, mod sources for these outputs are not limited to VCAs...

BODY is a subtle, yet novel control. This control simulates the tightness of a drum head. All the way tight, we get a softer and somewhat muted sound, to the right we achieve a more flabby sound. The middle region is the sweet spot for a nearly perfect resonant drum. BODY can have a greater effect depending on the other parameters and can be very useful for fine tuning the sound in a mix and designing original drum sounds.

RING controls the resonant decay time. Both short and plucky and an infinite ring are obtainable. The filter is tuned so that it will always resonate a little, even when RING control is all the way down.

Before the output section, we have the discrete transistor saturation. We like this because of the vintage low end distortion from overdriven class-A discrete amplifiers. This one is tuned a bit more aggressively and just a touch is necessary to add some bite. However, you can go over the top and get brutal if you so desire... ;-)
The saturator will overdrive the output stage for more of a hard clipping effect that can be tuned out by adjusting the output level control without sacrificing signal amplitude - its a hot signal by intention.

The OUTPUT section is a parallel signal processor design. The OUTPUT control blends the nominal output with a secondary input (or nothing) depending on the 2 way switch setting below the control and/or whether an external signal is patched into the AMP CV input. In 'AMP' mode, the OUTPUT control works like a volume control. If a signal is active on the AMP CV input, the control will blend between the nominal output and the CV control level. Similarly, in 'ENV' mode we get the same blending action using the internal envelope.

The VCA can also be accessed directly via the A-MIX input. This allows you to use the output section as a standalone VCA (modulated via the envelope or not) or to mix other sounds with the Entity. Feedback patching is a possibility using a stackable or mult to feed the output into the A-MIX input. This produces a juicy distortion effect of a different flavour, you may like it.

The filter can be used independently or in combination with the nominal output via the F-MIX input. This input is used as an aux trigger input that is sensitive to pulse/trigger width. As the effect is less dramatic than the main trigger, dynamic rhythms are achievable using both inputs and creative triggering.

Analogue envelope follower - 6HP
Notes: The Detect-Rx is a versatile envelope follower, voltage controlled comparator (gate extractor) and rectifier providing many useful prescriptions to fill in your modular needs.

Functions:

DETECT-R is the main input and provides an envelope output, rectified output and gate output simultaneously. If a second signal is also patched into the EXTRACT-R, it can be used separately.

The top two controls and switch alter the response of the resultant envelope. Any signal level from LINE (-10dBv) up to modular (+/-5 to +/-10V) may be used.

The FREQ switch selects the spectra in which the envelope will respond to dynamic changes from the input signal.

SMOOTH adds an additional ripple smoothing level control and tracks the FREQ setting

ENV GAIN controls the level of the envelope and is capable of attenuation as well as a lot of gain for low level input signals and even guitars (some pre-gain may be required for certain guitar pickups)

THRU provides a buffered copy of the input signal for easy patching of classic envelope follower applications and more

An LED is provided for visual feedback of the envelope and peak level (clipping) indication.

Some uses for the DETECT-R:

- Create envelopes that follow the input amplitude and frequency spectra
- Slew audio or control voltages
- Create a side chain envelopes for amplitude dynamics

EXTRACT-R is a voltage controlled comparator with three threshold selections; LINE level, 5V and 10V peak for various levels of control and response. The output gate is normalized into the DETECT-R input by default - providing a second method of producing an envelope from a gate rather than dynamic content.

RANGE selects the maximum threshold level of the attenuator.

8-bit wavetable oscillator for Eurorack with Uni-Five companion module
Notes: The Oscitron is an 8-bit wavetable oscillator for Eurorack. It is based around the Atmegatron audio engine but also has a lot of different features, which make it more suited to the modular environment.

One of the key differences is the ability to capture wavetables via an audio input. There is also a "continuous capture" mode which produces vocoder-style effects.

The resolution of the audio engine can be altered from the Atmegatron's 32 sample wavetables, down to 16 and up to 128 samples, creating radically different timbres.

There is a clock input that can be routed to many different parameters. There are 5 CV inputs for controlling the most common parameters. 16 patches can be stored internally. As with the Atmegatron, different software can be uploaded to the Oscitron. A port of the Odytron software is ready for release in the first quarter of 2017.

The Oscitron comes bundled with the Uni-Five companion module. Spectral tilt filters before each triode stage alternately boost or cut high and low frequencies for different harmonic emphasis. Take advantage of the instability!

The Eternal Spring Filter is quite different than most filters. It belongs to that category of sound modifiers which could be called an "effect", which is to say that it doesn't just filter the sound in a regular manner but also adds a considerable amount of edge/personality. At times it sounds like a wavefolder and when you plug a nice slow LFO into the CV input, you can really get some intense sounds out of it.

At lower drive settings, this filter adds noise, grit, and harmonics, while at higher settings the sound of the filter takes over and replaces your input with sparks and sludge. It sounds great on synth leads, on basslines, and really adds a lot of movement to drones. It is a weird beast which is capable of some different sounds than other filters in your system. On top of all of that, this filter is not temperature compensated and has plenty of musical instability. The cut-off and Q move around nicely to add energy to your incoming audio.

Complex noise oscillator module - 14HP
Notes: The Interstellar Radio is a faulty transmission line providing several varieties of destructive effects as well as acting as a non-volts/octave complex oscillator when no input is provided.

Interstellar radio converts an audio signal from the input jack to a high frequency pulse train and then back to an audio signal with voltage control over the clock for the up conversion (CARRIER) as well as the down conversion (DEMODULATOR), like a voltage controlled radio transceiver designed for poor reception.

Manipulating these clocks allows for a variety of aliasing, distortion, and frequency modulation type effects. The output is also sent to a comparator along with the input, and the result is available at the "ERROR" output for a ring modulation type effect.

When no input is provided a DC offset (controllable with the input jack) sets a frequency for the up conversion (which is effectively a VCO), the down conversion acts as a modulation oscillator allowing for a fairly radical form of frequency modulation. Two audio signals can be inserted into the clock input jacks and modulate each other in the same way.

Quadrature sine wave VCO/state variable filter - 18HP
Notes: The SPIN section is a quadrature sine wave oscillator. The GRIND section compares each phase against the input signal, then subtracts the resulting square waves from the input signal. If the spin section is either damped enough or enough signal is fed into it from the GRIND section then it will stop oscillating and become a state variable filter.

The Angle Grinder tracks volts per octave and can be used as a sine wave oscillator with voltage control over harmonic content available at the GRIND OUT. With no input it's four phase related sine outputs (0, 90, 180, and 27 degrees) remain clean from 0.1Hz to over 20kHz and are suitable for quad panning or XY applications.

With an input signal applied the GRIND out ranges from quadrature pulse width modulation (at LFO rate) to sync-like metallic tones (at audio rate). When GRIND is fed into the SPIN then it becomes a nonlinear feedback network with the faders and corresponding CV inputs providing instinctive control over phase cancellation, oscillation, and distortion. The four phase related outputs will become low pass, band pass, high pass, and inverted band pass filter outputs.

The function of the Angle Grinder depends on both the position of the knobs and the presence of an input signal.

Triple oscillator module with various modulation possibilities - 30HP
Notes: The latest brainchild of synth pioneer Dave Rossum, TRIDENT is a 100% analogue, triple oscillator module that opens up a universe of dynamic timbral textures.

At its most basic level, TRIDENT is three precision audio VCOs, each sporting a unique variety of control voltage inputs.

The main or "Carrier" oscillator provides its three waveforms simultaneously. The two Modulation Oscillators each have a single output and a waveform selector. The Modulation Oscillators also have a voltage controlled Symmetry parameter which varies the duty cycle of the triangle wave output from sawtooth to triangle back to time reversed sawtooth, and also varies the sawtooth output to have an upward or downward kink in the middle, as well as controlling pulse width when the pulse waveform is selected.

And while each oscillator can be used independently if desired, it's when they're combined into a synchronous ensemble that the real sonic magic happens.

That magic is what we call "Zing" modulation. Each of the Modulation Oscillators can modulate each of the Carrier outputs in an amount controlled by the Zing parameter. Zing modulation is mathematically akin to ring modulation, but due to the synchronization of the oscillators (when an oscillator's Sync button on), the harmonic sum and difference sidetones of ring modulation transform into complex but purely harmonic overtone spectra, which vary dynamically and dramatically with the frequency and waveshape modulations of the modulation oscillators. Each change in the Modulation Oscillator parameters - Frequency, Symmetry, Waveshape, Zing, and (in the case of Modulation Oscillator 2) Phase - will have a different effect on the timbre of each of the three Carrier waveshape outputs.

When the modulation oscillators are set to track the carrier oscillator, the waveshape will remain constant as the carrier frequency changes. In this case the overtone structure is determined by the settings and CV modulations of the modulation oscillators. If instead the modulation oscillators do not track the carrier, some of the overtone structure will vary relative to the carrier frequency.

What all this means is that whether musicians take advantage of TRIDENT's unique synchronous modulation capabilities (which they, of course, should), or just treat it as three superb, wide-range analogue oscillators, TRIDENT offers a vast variety of dramatic sonic textures.

Dual attack generator featuring two ASR envelopes with linear voltage curves
Notes: The Model 180 is 100% discrete transistor core dual channel A/D A/H/D function generator (envelope). A trigger or gate signal greater than 2.5v at the "trigger" input causes the output CV to linearly ramp up to its maximum value at a speed set by the "attack time" pot. Once reaching the maximum CV output (set from the factory at 5v but easily adjustable via trimmer) the module will hold at this level for a static duration set by the "note duration" pot, or will hold at its maximum level as long as the trigger input is high. This behaviour is selected with the "controlled internally" vs. "controlled by trigger length" switch. At the end of the "hold" period the CV output will ramp back down to approximately 0v at a rate set by the "decay time" pot.

Like many "west coast" function generators, the envelope cannot be retriggered until the attack phase is complete, allowing for some function as a clock divider etc. The attack, hold, and decay times can be set very fast, and the module can easily create percussive blips as well as longer drawn out envelope shapes.

Dual sine-sawtooth generator based on Model 158 from the Buchla 100 series
Notes: The Model 158 is a dual oscillator created out of an entirely discrete transistor core. It consists of two independent and identical sides each with a front panel tuning knob, a frequency modulation input and attenuator, and a knob to fade smoothly between saw and sine waves. The RED PANEL model 158 is based off of the original "A" variant of the 158 oscillator.

The 158 was one of the very first voltage controlled oscillators ever produced. As such it contains many particular quirks/rawness of this first generation of synthesis. The exponential scaling of the oscillator is far from accurate, there is no temperature compensation, quick changes in pitch produce a slewing effect, and the saw waveform only vaguely resembles a saw wave through part of its range. It is as accurate a recreation as we believe is possible with the components available today. We performed hundreds of listening tests to find suitable replacements for obsolete transistors, and hand select multiple transistors on each individual unit to ensure that they have the proper sound.

Control voltage processor - 14HP
Notes: The 156 is an accurate reproduction of the original 156, however it's accuracy also means that it's functionality is based entirely on the needs of a cohesive system designed in the mid 60's. It cannot work with negative voltages, the maximum gain is set at 1:1, and the transistor core makes it inherently nonlinear.

The 156M is a modern update of the original 156 that we feel both works within the paradigm of the original 100 series and helps to interface with modern Eurorack gear. Like the 156, the 156M consists of two independent voltage processors. Each side can mix between 2 independent control voltages. This mix can then be offset by either a positive voltage or (unlike the original) a negative voltage. The mixed and offset control voltages can then be attenuverted - which allows the user to set the gain in either a positive or negative direction and can also boost the gain to approximately 1.5x the original signal. In essence, the combination of these three facilities allow you to mix, offset, compress, expand, invert, amplify, or scale any CV source.

Notes: The Model 156 was likely the first "CV manipulation" tool ever available to modular synthesists. In the original 100 series environment, the 156 was used as a front end to nearly every other module with a CV input. The majority of CV inputs throughout the 100 series do not have associated attenuators or offsets built into the modules, and thus they relied on the 156 to scale, offset, and attenuate the voltages traveling around the system. The 156 consists of 2 independent "voltage processors" Each with a control to mix the two inputs, add a voltage offset (positive only), and then a control to mix between the external CV to be processed and the internal offset. In addition, the "B" channel has an inverting input. The 156 is as close a replica to the original 156 as possible, and is built entirely of discrete analogue components.

Notes: The Model 110 is 4 independent transistor based voltage controlled amplifiers behind one panel. Each VCA (or "gate" in the original terminology) consists of an audio input with an attenuator, a CV input, and 2 outputs. The VCA's are AC coupled - meaning that they will not pass slow (or static) control voltages. The VCA's are calibrated to unity (an input of a 10v peak to peak audio wave, will produce a 10v peak to peak audio wave at output) when 5v is applied to the CV input and the attenuator is at approximately the 3'oclock position.

Notes: Unlike the later (and better known) Model 292, the original low pass gate - the Model 110 is entirely transistor based (rather than vactrol based like the 292), and is much faster.

Additive interval pitch sequencer for turning triggers into melodies - 6HP
Notes: In a slim 6HP format the Rebel Technology Tonic offers one adjustable and five fixed intervals. Each interval has a trigger input and manual trigger button. Freely combine intervals for more than four octaves chromatic range.

The bottom interval is negative, the middle four are positive. The top, adjustable interval has a range from minus one half octave at fully counter-clockwise, to plus one octave at fully clockwise, with zero in the middle.

The default tuning gives you whole tone steps: +2, +4, +8 and +16 semitones. The bottom, negative interval drops the pitch by a semitone. This provides a basic range of 32 semitones, not counting the adjustable interval.

The module is entirely analog, each interval can be tuned using the 23-turn precision trimpots on the back of the module.

Voltage controlled, cross fading switch - 20HP
Notes: Synapse is a crossfading switch with a signal path that can be rearranged on the fly. Its dynamic routing and mixing functionality make it capable of turning static waveforms into evolving soundscapes.

The core of Synapse is comprised of four crossfade circuits chained to a sequential switch, all under digital control. This enables many intelligent behaviours that aren't possible in the analogue domain. Crossfade positions can be saved in up to eight memory locations for easy recall. These let you create sections within your patch, and travel through them with a single knob - all without repatching. In addition, the switch outputs can be rotated left, right, or randomized, enabling unique spatialization of sounds through effect chains, filters, or other mixers.

Synapse can process CV signals just as well as audio and even generate its own adjustable DC voltage for modulation. A configurable +5V DC offset is normalled to each B input, allowing it to function as a four step sequencer or eight stage stored voltage source without needing any additional modules.

Organic wavetable oscillator featuring scanned synthesis - 16HP
Notes: Scanned is an organic wavetable oscillator. It uses an unexplored technique known as Scanned Synthesis to animate wavetables that are created in real-time. This synthesis method was conceived by the father of computer music, Max Mathews, as the next paradigm in digital oscillators, and until now, has never been implemented on hardware.

The wavetables are dynamically generated from a set of "objects" tied together on a virtual string. These objects have physical properties including Mass, Stiffness, and Damping which affect the way that the string moves through space and time. Unlike physical modelling, however, this algorithm is a means of creating new electronic sounds, not replicating acoustic instruments.

To animate the waveform, the objects are morphed into the currently selected hammer shape and then released. This excitation of the sound generates evolving timbral landscapes that contain harmonic movement without external modulation. The hammer section also determines whether Scanned is a free-running oscillator, or a triggered sound source allowing it to function as a complete voice without additional filters or VCAs.
