Notes: Dual tidal modulator with max, min & mix outs

FranKinksTides is a 18hp dual Tides (based on the Swirls pcb layout) with the max/min circuit from Kinks and some switches for sync, quadrature, pll and fm operation . It can be a double/complex oscillator, a dual function generator or any combination of oscillator, Lfo and Envelope generator with lots of cv control plus some interesting cross-modulation and sync features.

Some improvements in version 1.2:

-Mix output is now buffered, no signal bleeding on single outs.
-Mix pot controls also the balance of the signals sent to the max/min circuit.
-Uni/bi switch now also determines the signal sent to FM1.
-Clock/sync switch has now a center OFF position, no need of plugging a dummy cable in the Clock1 when using Sheeps firmware to avoid ultra fast sound bank changes.
small improvements for DIY:
-Bigger font size on the pcb.
-Parts renumbered for easy DIY.

Notes: This is a Dual Linear Low Noise VCA module, based on the AS3360.

Both VCAs can be controlled by a CV entry, modulated by control knob.

VCA1 also has an initial gain control (B1), that offsets the CV input by a constant value. This allows VCA1 to be left always open, with the initial gain controlling the amplification.

If both input jacks are used (IN1, IN2), the two VCAs will operate independently. The output of VCA1 will go to OUT1, the output of VCA2 will go to OUT2.

If there's no jack in IN2, the two VCAs will be cascaded, and the output of VCA1 will go both to OUT1 and as an input to VCA2.

This allows this module to be used to process both the MIDI Velocity and the envelope of an audio signal.

IN1: Input Signal for VCA1.
CV1: Control Voltage for VCA1's amplification.
IN2: Input Signal for VCA2. If no IN2 is present, the input of VCA2 will be the output of VCA1.

Notes: The .VCO is an 8HP eurorack analogue relaxation core oscillator with sawtooth, triangle, and sub octave square wave outputs, and an integrated drift generator.

.VCO’s tuning system is unique in modular synthesis. There are three controls: Range, Semitone, and Detune. Range and Semitone are stepped controls on potentiometers.

The Range knob allows you to select wether the .VCO is an audio oscillator or low frequency oscillator. LFO, 32’, 16’, 8’, 4’, and 2’ are ranges most synthesists are familiar with, but the Wide mode allows you to sweep through 5 octaves with the Detune knob.

The Semitone knob sets a positive semitone offset to the oscillator and functions in all ranges. To make common values easier to get to, the root, fifth, and octave all have twice of the rotational degrees allotted to them as the other semitone values.

The Drift Generator could be described as a drunken walk, or perhaps a random wobbulator. In technical language, it is a random, in rate and peak, bipolar linear function generator with smoothing. Some people patch their entire synthesizer to do what this thing has built in! It can move veeeery slowly or squiggle very quickly. Its output is normalized to the modulation input, so it can be easily defeated by plugging a new source into the modulation jack.

Notes: Designed for Frap's CGM Creative Mixer modules, the Masterone takes an input via IDC socket rather than standard Eurorack connections, then feeds out to headphone outs, balanced stereo XLR, TRS and mono.

Supplier's Notes:
The Masterone is the first Frap Tools module designed to be connected exclusively with non-Eurorack equipment.

It features four separate output sections with different Neutrik connectors and adjustable gain levels to suit the most common live and studio situations (and even some uncommon ones).

With no inputs and just large-format outputs, it pushes even further the concept behind the M module: being a Eurorack system's gateway to the outside world.

XLR Balanced Stereo Outputs

Two XLR connectors (left and right) provide a balanced output with the expected 6 dB extra gain. In many cases, they can allow bypassing a DI box.

TRS Pseudo-Balanced Stereo Outputs

These outputs are very similar in concepts to the ones on the M module, but with large 1/4" jack connectors. It is possible to patch standard TS cables and use them as unbalanced outputs, or use TRS cables to interface them with balanced equipment (the ground is routed to both the ring and the sleeve, for a better performance than regular unbalanced outputs).

Attenuation Switches for Flexible Connectivity

If the two stereo outputs are too hot, a set of switches can attenuate them. The Line/Mic switch on the XLR outputs attenuates them by ~30 dB, while the Line/Inst switch on the TRS outputs attenuates them by ~15 dB.

Stereo Headphones Output with Pre-Fader Listening

The Headphones section allows you to monitor the Master output with an independent volume knob and, at the same time, take advantage of the PFL function on the Channels and the Groups. Rotate the PFL crossfader towards the blue section to blend the PFL modules with the Master sum and check if everything is okay before launching the next scene.

Mono Output with Dedicated Fader

Should you need an extra monitor on stage, or run the whole system through a vintage amp in the studio for parallel processing, the auxiliary monophonic outputs is the answer. It provides the sum of both channels in a handy, pseudo-balanced output with a dedicated fader: attenuate the line level by 15 dB, or amplify it by 6 dB.

About Junction

Junction is a compact, 4 channel attenuverter, cascading mixer and multiple designed to fine tune the control voltages in your rack to the perfect range for their destinations. Junction can be used as a source of fixed voltage, offset another voltage, or mix multiple voltages together to create complex and dynamic modulation.

Features

Each channel on Junction has a knob (1) that acts as a manual control for the attenuverter. Center position (12 o clock) is 0V. The first channel input (2) is normalized to +5V when no cable is plugged into it.

A buffered copy of the input signal of the first channel is present on all of the other inputs from from the first (2) to the last (8). This duplication is "cascading" as shown by the arrow graphics on the panel - if a cable is patched into any input, it "breaks" the cascading multiple - all unpatched inputs carry the signal present at the uppermost patched input (or +5V if no inputs are patched). For example, if a signal is patched into the second channel's input (4) the third (6) and fourth (8) channel inputs would carry a copy of the second channel's input instead of the first channel input.

Junction's channels are mixed on the outputs. The output mixer is also "cascading" - when a cable is patched into an output, it carries a mix of it's own output and all unpatched channel outputs above it. For example, if only the last channel output (9) is patched, this output will carry a mix of all of the outputs. Patching the first channel output (3) would remove it from this mix.

Even though Junction's inputs cascade and outputs mix, Junction's output will clip at the Eurorack power rail voltages of +12 and -12V. It is not possible to output a voltage outside of this range, regardless of the signals patched into Junction.

Optx is a compact and bi-directional ADAT lightpipe converter for eurorack synthesizers. The module provides 8 channels of input and output expansion to many pro audio interfaces, and may be used standalone to interconnect eurorack systems.

ADAT Encoding & Decoding

Some computer audio interfaces are equipped with one or more pairs of ADAT expansion ports allowing for additional input and output channels. Optx takes full advantage of these often unused ports, providing multi-channel connections directly to and from eurorack systems.

The module accepts any 8-channel ADAT encoded digital signal at the Rx TOSLINK jack (via lightpipe optical cable) and converts it into 8 discrete analog signals available at the OUT 1-8 jacks.

Conversely, Optx accepts 8 discrete analog signals at the IN 1-8 jacks and converts them into an 8-channel ADAT encoded digital signal available at the Tx jack.

DC-Coupled

The module's analog outputs are DC-coupled, meaning signals can be AC (audio) or DC (control voltages). So when used in conjunction with software such as Bitwig Studio or Ableton CV Tools, Optx becomes an interface for outgoing control voltages like 1V/oct pitch and gate signals, or LFOs, ADSRs and other modulators. The amount of creative potential here cannot be overstated.

Sample Clock Synchronization

The module has three options for sample clock sync, selectable using the 3-way switch.

44.1 Generates and syncs to internal clock of 44.1 kHz

EXT Syncs to external clock from ADAT signal at Rx

48 Generates and syncs to internal clock of 48 kHz

*With the switch set to EXT, the blue EXT SYNC LED will illuminate when a valid sample clock is detected at Rx.

Signal LEDs

Optx also provides visual signal indication of the 8 decoded ADAT channels feeding the OUT 1-8 jacks. Each pair of WHITE LEDs indicates the polarity (-Ve left, +Ve right) and relative strength of the signal (i 10 V).

Audio-rate signals will generally light both LEDs continuously, whereas LFOs will alternate more apparently between the two. Gates, triggers and positive-going envelopes will generally light only the right LED (+Ve).

Five Frequency Bands

The module has five bands of graphic equalization, each with i12 dB of level boost or cut. The first order filters employed for equalization have slopes of 6 dB/oct from their respective centre frequencies.

Adjustments to these bands can make both subtle and dramatic changes to the frequency characteristics of the source audio signal(s). These adjustments can be useful in many scenarios such as attenuating problem frequencies and accentuating others, or strategically making "space" in the mix for specific sounds.

Balance & Level

The BALANCE parameter is essentially an equal-power crossfader which simultaneously and inversely affects the gain of the Left and Right channels. When a stereo signal is connected to the module's inputs, this parameter functions like a Pan control, shifting the stereo image Left and Right. When two mono signals are connected to the module's inputs and the OUT L+R mono output is used, this parameter functions like a volume crossfader with no perceivable level drop in the centre.

The LEVEL parameter is a post-EQ volume adjustment, used primarily to compensate for level changes after frequency equalization. The module implements a pseudo-loudness feature, which gradually boosts the LOW and HIGH shelving filters as LEVEL is reduced. This helps to retain the signal's "fullness" as it is attenuated, accounting for the equal-loudness contour.

Complete Voltage Control

A key feature of EQx5 is the ability of all parameters to be controlled with external voltages, opening up a range of experimental possibilities in the eurorack environment.

The amount of boost or cut for each band can be modulated using control voltage signals, with the full range being i5 V (10 Vpp). The frequency band's gain knob then defines the bias point to offset the incoming control voltage.

Additionally, both BALANCE and LEVEL have their own respective CV inputs, also with a full range of i 5 V. The LEVEL parameter can act very much like a VCA when used in combination with its CV input.

Input & Output

The two inputs, L and R, are designed for audio signals within the audible spectrum. These inputs are AC-coupled, and will block DC signals to reduce noise. R is normalled L, so if no plug is present, the channel will obtain a of copy of L.

In addition to the two discrete L and R outputs, the module has a mono output, OUT L+R, which is the sum of the two channels. As mentioned previously, this output is useful when crossfading between two signals using the BALANCE parameter, or to conveniently obtain a mix of the two audio signals.

Instrument Preamp

Injectr's high-impedance instrument input, INST IN, feeds straight into a variable gain circuit which can produce a range of tonal responses, from clean to heavily overdriven. The smooth character of the DRIVE parameter is made possible by a soft-clipping topology using a classic 4558 op amp and four diodes, two silicon and two germanium.

A post-drive LEVEL control is provided to trim the output of the preamp stage, which is accompanied by a RED LED, indicating that the signal is reaching the typical eurorack audio level of 10 Vpp. Because stringed instruments tend to have strong transients, it is suggested to adjust the LEVEL control so that the LED is illuminated with moderate to heavy playing.

CV Extractor

Buffered directly from the instrument input is a responsive envelope follower circuit, which produces a control voltage signal at the ENV output jack based upon the input's volume dynamics. The ENVELOPE parameter adjusts the sensitivity of the circuit, depending on how the instrument is being played. The adjacent WHITE LED is a visual indicator of the envelope follower's output. The switch labeled SLOW MED FAST selects the follower's response time, affecting both the rise (attack) and fall (release). An inverted copy (negative going voltage) is present at the ENV- output jack.

Additionally, a 0-5 V gate control signal is present at the GATE output jack, which is derived from the envelope signal and is indicated by the GREEN LED. The sensitivity of the gate extractor circuit is adjusted using the GATE parameter, and essentially sets the threshold at which the gate signal is triggered on and off.

Amp Simulator

One of Injectr's most useful features is the Amp Simulator circuit. Using a complex arrangement of analogue filters, it imparts an amplifier-like quality to the signal.

The CHARACTER parameter alone can dramatically alter the sound, giving the user combined control over the middle "dip" frequency and bandwidth. The PRESENCE parameter adjusts the low-end response, thickening or thinning the overall tone, whereas the BRIGHT switch enhances high frequencies. In combination with pickup selection and tone controls of the guitar itself, these parameters provide a wide range of tones all while staying within the eurorack system. If preferred, the Amp Simulator can also be toggled off by disengaging the SIM ON switch.

FX Loop

The module is equipped with a eurorack-level effects loop, FX SND and FX RTN, serving as an access point to process the signal after the Preamp/Drive circuit but before the Amp Simulator. It is also useful to process the signal with eurorack modules before taking the signal back out using the Line Out.

High-gain modules such as overdrive/distortion and intense compression may cause unwanted feedback in the FX Loop, and so are best patched after Injectr from the OUT jack.

Outputs

The OUT jack provides a post-simulator eurorack-level audio signal, which is useful when it is to remain in the system to be processed or mixed with other signals.

The LINE OUT jack provides the same signal at line-level, which is suitable for sending the signal out to external gear, interfaces and amplifiers.

Xaoc Devices Erfurt is a digital module that may be used as an 8-output clock and audio frequency divider, a bi-directional binary counter, or a component of the Leibniz binary system, i.e. a programmable digital oscillator.

Erfurt features an 8-bit register which holds its current state: an 8-bit number representing digital values from 0 to 255. The state is available at the front panel via eight binary (5V gate) outputs and reflected by the 8 status LEDs. There are three clock inputs: one incrementing the state at each impulse, one decrementing, and one resetting the state to zero. The state may also be changed manually with two buttons.

When operating alone, the state of Erfurt changes by 1 at each impulse from the clock inputs, so that it counts from 0 to 255 in a cycle (modulo 256). This yields the signal frequency divided by 2, 4, 8, etc. up to 128, available at individual bit outputs. Depending on which clock input is used, the clock patterns correspond to the so called mathematical or musical divisions of the rhythm.

With two different clocks patched to the inputs, the counter alternately increases and decreases its state, and ultimately it counts with a rate proportional to the frequency difference between the clocks. A third clock patched to the Reset input may be used to shorten the sequence thus making the cycle incomplete for even more rhythmic diversity.

When there is a Leibniz data source connected at the back (even as simple as Lipsk), the state increases or decreases in larger steps, depending on the data present at the Leibniz bus (eg. the value programmed by the Lipsk buttons). The counter overflows quicker, and produces more complex patterns.

The state of the counter may be used as a phase input to a digital wave table. Connected to other Leibniz modules, Erfurt may play various roles, eg. it may scan waveshapes in Jena, produce stepped voltages useful for making interesting glissandi with Drezno and any VCO, generate gate patterns animating the spectrum of Odessa harmonic banks, spawn pseudo-chaotic sequences when fed back to Lipsk, etc. Since Erfurt is based on CMOS logic (no CPU!), it can be clocked at very high frequencies (exceeding audio rate), therefore some selection switches are provided for clock pre-scaling.

In everyday usage, 'chaos' means 'disorder, 'randomness'. In mathematics however, chaos has a very specific meaning. Chaos theory deals with systems exhibiting highly irregular behaviour, seemingly random yet completely deterministic.

Applying this to the world of modular synths opens up a whole new world of modulation opportunities, introducing a natural irregularity to otherwise purely 'mechanical' music, yet with much more control and repeatability than just simple randomness.

In chaos theory, the combination of all possible oscillations at a specific set of parameters is known as the 'attractor'. Orbit 3 incorporates a modified electronic analogue of the classic double-scroll attractor. Since it contains some (bi)stable regions in addition to chaotic ones, this type is known as a 'strange' attractor.

The voltages at each of the module's outputs can be thought to describe the orbit of a particle through 3D space around two equilibrium points. The positions of these points, as well as the distribution of the orbits and rate of movement can all be adjusted under manual or voltage control.

Not just limited to low frequency modulation use, Orbit 3 can operate in the audio frequency domain as well, yielding a variety of waveforms from its three complementary output pairs. These span a wide range, from near-sine waves to white noise. The addition of temperature compensation and calibrated pitch tracking makes for an unconventional and lively, yet also accurate audio oscillator.

And when you need a break from all that musical chaos, simply connecting any pair of outputs to the XY inputs of an oscilloscope will surely not disappoint!

Moving from mono to stereo sound: a logical progression for any synthesist looking to expand their sonic palette. Making use of two audio channels, rather than just one, quite literally adds another dimension to the capabilities of a synthesiser.

Unfortunately, controlling stereo signals can be a challenge within a modular system. This realisation led to the development of Enhance 2: a convenient yet high-fidelity tool for stereo enhancement. It can be used to adjust balance, width and spectral content, while also opening up a world of mid/side processing; all under voltage control and in just 8 HP.

The primary stereo parameters are balance (moving the sound left or right) and width (making it narrower or wider). The balance circuit uses a true constant-power gain law, while the width stage allows for seamless transitions from pure mono to extra-wide stereo.

In addition, tone control is provided by a pair of unique, wide-ranging mid/side voltage controlled tilt filters with selectable corner frequency. These make 'cleaning up' a muddy-sounding mix straightforward, but also provide unique binaural effects when modulated.

Mid/side processing encodes the stereo signals into one containing only the mono material (mid), and another containing the differences between both channels (side). Apart from the internal tilt filters, mid/side outputs also enable external signal processing such as compression or reverberation. An integrated mid/side decoder returns the results back to standard stereo. And at all times, a LED bar phase meter ensures that phase correlation can be easily maintained.

The 281t Quad Function Generator comprises four function generators organized in two pairs. All four generators can operate independently or can be linked in pairs to generate more complex output voltages.

Cycle jack enables the cycling of the corresponding function generator using a gate signal.

Trigger button enables the manual triggering of the function generators.

A switch selects one of three modes: Transient, Sustained, and Cyclic.

Upon receiving a pulse, a generator's output voltage ramps up to 10V at a rate determined by the sum of an applied control voltage and the setting of the attack time knob. When in Sustained mode, the voltage will stay high as long as the input pulse is maintained; when not in the Sustained mode, or when the input pulse terminates, the output ramps down to 0V at a rate determined by the sum of the decay cv in and the setting of the decay knob. At the end of the Decay segment, a transient pulse appears at the pulse output. If the 281t is in Cyclic mode, the cycle now repeats.

In the Quadrature mode, generators A and B (or C and D) operate in tandem with their functions shifted by ninety degrees in relation to each other.
