Review: Husband and wife singer-guitarist duo Lux Interior and Poison Ivy were the backbone and founding parents of The Cramps, whose lengthy career managed to outlive many of the formative-era punks they broke through with, first catapulting onto the New York gothabilly scene (well, arguably they invented it) circa 1976 and then only finally opting to call time in 2009, following the sad passing of Interior. During that tine, they inspired myriad garage, alternative, and heavy rock & roll bands that wanted to keep things minimal, and their work can still be considered as setting benchmarks today. Across this incredible collection of tracks, or rather Songs of Love & Hate captured live and on stage, the outfit certainly show exactly why their popularity was so long-lasting and their legacy so inimitable. Review: Mute and Spoon Records continue in their CAN retrospective bout, following up the first two parts of the long-lost CAN live series ('Brighton' and 'Stuttgart' respectively) with further re-releases of their best known albums. Here, their sci-fi prog masterpiece 'Monster Movie' gets a blue vinyl rerub, doing best justice yet to the band's debut after Holger Czukay and Irmin Schmidt left their academic careers to start the band. The twenty minute peak state 'Yoo Doo Right' sounds particularly great here, thanks to the band members overseeing the album's most recent remaster in 2004. As ever with CAN, this album has an honest, intense and raw sound.

Review: British psychedelic rock band Dark released their debut album Dark Round The Edges in 1972 and put out several more until the late 70s. Steve Giles was the man responsible for forming the group while still at school in Northampton in 1968. He took care of the design, photography and production as well as playing lead guitar and providing vocals alongside Martin Weaver on guitar, Alan Bowley engineering and Ron Johnson on bass. Their well-honed live sound transferred well to record when they head into SIS Studios to record the bulk of their work. Melodic prog rock licks, fuzzy guitar riffs and angular drums define much of this collection.

Review: Composer Matt Berry aims to mimic the classic iconic Library Music label KPM with this new outing on Acid Jazz. It is the first in a series of such releases and it does a fine job of following in the label's tradition of providing the musical bedrock for classic British TV series and international movies. KPM used composers such as Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield and Berry proves he is right up there with this 7". 'Top Brass' is a funky instrumental with dramatic strings that add a sense of tension to the rude boy swagger of the rhythm. On the flip is a more stripped-back 'Bare Essentials mix' which is just as good and a little more menacing.

Review: Lo Borges arrived in 1972 as the debut solo album for Brazilian songwriter Lo Borges. He was recording Clube da Esquina with the legendary Milton Nascimento and Beto Guedes in the same year and there are plenty of shades of that alaric here. It's a record with lush texture and lots of superbly intricate guitar playing that brings the heat and transports you to a scorched earth world in South America. The vocal arrangements are lush, too, with lots of confounding instrumentals and clever progressions that you will enjoy trying to unpick. Add in melodic brass and jazzy organs and you have a real pearler.

Review: It feels like every couple of years a new reissue of Kikagaku Moyo's magical 2013 album Forest of Lost Children comes around, but we are not moaning. This group is "a musical union between five free spirits" or in less poetic terms, band founders Go Kurosawa (on drums and vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (on guitar and vocals) plus bass by and Akira also on guitar. Their sound is as unique as any, with psychedelic, folk, prog-rock, psychedelic-folk-mixed-with-prog-rock and more all collided into one another on an album that keeps you on your toes and guessing at what might come next even within each track, let alone across the whole album. If you're a new interested party this is a great primer for what the band is all about.

Fast and loose," says Sam Evian of his latest record, the first to grace his new imprint, Thirty Tigers. If that's not enough to make you balk with jealously at not being invited, then the idea of Big Thief's Adrian Lenker and Sufjan Stevens, among others, debasing to Evian's house in the Catskills to examine a revamped studio, complete with vintage tape deck and console, then going wild swimming at midnight, just as snow fell, might seal the deal. The following day, work began on Plunge, a record with no real fixed direction or plan. In the end, it will - or, at least, it should - be remembered among Evian's finest offerings. A stunning collection of folk-leaning rock 'n' roll, Americana and jangly indie, you can almost smell upstate New York.

Review: Khruangbin has very much become the masters of the downtempo sphere over the last decade. Review: .You don't need to hear much on The YumYum Tree to understand how apt the story behind Ozric Tentacles is. 'The Chairman's Portrait' intro is a dark, heavily distorted spoken-word piece backed by dark rumbling guitars that explodes into the head-banging electronic banger 'Midnight in Sodom'. The angry lyrics are paired with awesome melodic guitar solos and chiptune noises, before shifting into noise rock territory. 'Hoof and Horn' takes up most of the runtime at a hefty 12 minutes, in which ambient drone begets experimental sound effects that are reminiscent of the liquid bass and synths favoured by producer SOPHIE. The track evolves into a demonic lullaby that wouldn't feel out of place in an episode of American Horror Story, and fans of 2 Mello's 'Atmospheric Horror Music Vol.1' will greatly appreciate this track. The EP is all-in-all a camp experience. An Avante-Garde, quintessentially fun blend of two incredible groups.

Review: Captain Beyond may not be the first name on everyone's lips when it comes to supergroups, but let's break the elements down before rushing to judgment. Rod Evens, formerly of Deep Purple, Bobby Caldwell, once the Johnny Winter drummer, Iron Butterfly axeman Larry Reinhardt, and Lee Dorman - who was the bassist in that band - coming together to make outside the box guitar-fuelled sounds.
OK, so we're definitely talking about the specialist end of supergroups, but still, the moving parts here are nothing short of impressive. Forming in 1971, and releasing three records through to 1977, this album captures their essence and innovative abilities, melding hard rock, progressive, jazz fusion and space rock without coming across as self-indulgent or overblown. Hardly the easiest thing to pull off when you think about it.

Review: So good then named them seven times? That's no doubt what fans of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs will say, and you'd be hard-pushed to argue off the evidence of this new album. It is their fifth in just 10 years and is a powerful statement that is packed with some of their most potent work in an already storied career. The Newcastle-based quintet, fortified by their own individual passions, held up mirrors to themselves in writing this one. The result sounds are anthems for a world that is sleepwalking into oblivion but if it sounds this good, we aren't perturbed.

Review: Since forming in Austin in 2004, American Psych-Rock group The Black Angels have become standard-bearers for modern psych. Over 5 years since the band's fifth album 'Death Song' was released, the group have spent two years working on 'Wilderness of Mirrors', the times providing more than ample fodder for the Black Angels' signature sonic approach. And does it show, packaged in this beautiful gatefold housing limited red and blue coloured discs There are classic blasts of fuzzed-out guitars alongside melancholy experiments in the realms of shoegaze and garage rock. Even amidst these new experimentations, The Black Angels remain true to psych-rock forebears such as Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson, Arthur Lee and the members of the Velvet Underground, all of whom are namechecked on album highlight 'The River.' Another highlight is 'El Jardin' and its sorrowful lyrics and vocal delivery, lyrics discussing a toxic relationship as guitars strum away.

Review: It could not get much more late-1960s into early-1970s folk rock if it tried. Band name: Rainbird. Album title: Maiden Flight. General vibe: somewhere between a psychedelic ultraworld, late night blues basement and trip to a remote island to join an off-grid community. Painting quite a vivid picture there, admittedly, this 1971 rarity proves exactly why contemporary musicians can try to emulate this era but will never truly recreate it. Simply put, it's impossible to commit in the same way today. Rant and questionable point aside, Rainbird's uncovered gem is an epic masterpiece in no uncertain terms. From the wistful croonerdom of 'Stormdance (Part 1)' and its Wurlitzer powered chaotic seizure follow up l ('Stormdance (Part 2)'), to the lead guitar solo mastery of 'Man On the Mountain' and the quiet, reflective journeyman stuff on 'Sailboat', it manages to include every totem of this scene, without sounding cliched.

Review: Platform 23 reunites once more with Vox Man Records to dig deep into their archives and shine a new light on. In the past they have done some mega well loved Alternative Funk compilations which got the label off to a fine start and now they dig into an array of cult cassette releases to bring us treasure from Audiologie N-4 - The Independant Psychedelic Trip and Audiologie 5 et 6 - Ethniques Urbaines. This is music from the avant-garde and post punk scenes that draws on wave, spoken word, dark dub and industrial for its eerie yet alluring charms, all with a real edge. Ethnic, idiosyncratic and psyched out, this is another great overview.

Review: Sopwith Camel are one of the pin-ups of the San Francisco psychedelic rock scene of the late 1960s. Their debut album came in 1967 but it is their second and last full length The Miraculous Hump Returns From The Moon from 1973 that gets reissued here. Fans consider it a next level work which might explain why a good copy of an original will cost you a few quid these days. It's a record - and really one of the lost classics of the era - that has stood the test of time and still bangs today for the way it so uniquely mixes up FM schmaltz, prog-rock, jazz, showtunes, Krautrock and Indian classical music.

Review: San Francisco Bay Area soul band Monophonics's 'Beggin' is their own fine cover version of a song originally released by Franki Valli & The Four Seasons. It has been covered and sampled by a number of other acts who have done a fine job of popularising it, but this version by this large and often rotating cast of musicians is one that truly brings something different. It has a retro 60s soul sound in the gauzy guitars, while the rolling drums hit hard with extra texture from further psyched-out guitar lines. An instrumental is included for those who prefer a more direct approach.

Between them, the group has a mad diverse spread of backgrounds and influences which means their music too is broad in scope - psychedelic sounds and funky grooves, Arabic melodies and European rhythms all feature in this album as do rap and parlando. Review: For fans, this album contains the very essence of what made CAN such an iconic group. The band's blend of progressive rhythms and morphing, tantilizing melodies are all here in Delay 1968, which was recored in that year but not initially put out until 1981 (it was initially meant to be their debut album). Each tune comes laden with thrilling effects, tape edits, loops that makes every tune brim with vitality and a harsh, coarse texture. There is a real rawness to the whole thing that makes it a definitive garage-rock classic with some calling it a proto-CAN sound because of how they evolved in subsequent years.

Review: Do you ever stop and wonder where we'd all be without Soul Jazz in our lives? Whether the answer is yes or no, we often do. The label manages to do the business with both archival and brand new releases, straddling genres like an experienced jockey on race day, riding whatever gem of sound it has between its legs all the way to the Must Buy pile.

Review: .Straight out of Lincoln Park, Michigan, circa 1963, MC5 are one of those incredible rock & roll bands that people should be talking about more, still to this day. And we really, really do mean rock & roll, a genre in which they rank among the finest bands of all time, falling somewhere between proto-punk, hard rock, garage, blues and heavy bits, helping set the sonic foundations from which outfits such as AC/DC could go on to thrive and, to some extent at least, commercialise. Live In Europe presents nine tracks originally recorded for German and Finnish TV, and it offers both cover versions - which MC5 were renowned for - and originals. For collectors, it's worth noting in particular that 'Let It Rock' and 'Black To Comm' have never been been included on any release from the group, and, like much of what's here, serve as reminders of the incredible connection between the twin axe men, Wayne Kramer and Fred 'Sonic' Smith.

Review: Monsters and Angels is a welcome comeback album from Nervous Eaters. The edgy Boston punks formed back in the mid-1970s and were the house band at a local punk rock club, The Rat. They played with legendary names like Patti Smith and The Ramones and has something of a hit in '76 with 'Loretta.' They eventually called it a day in 1981 though have reunited over the years. The line-up that can be heard on this new album first came together in 2018 and continue to make good new tunes today. There is no shortage of energy and invention here so welcome back.

Review: Amorphous Androgynous are back with something suitably epic in the form of this symphonic, 40-minute prog space-rock concept album, We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal. It is presented as five fantastic parts with the legendary Peter Hammill and Paul Weller both guesting, while the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and a 25-piece live orchestral string section provide the sumptuous sound that makes this most expansive and borderless record sound so meaningful. A cosmic trip of gigantic proportions with all the ups and downs you need to really feel moved, this is the definition of prog lavishness.
