  1. Afrodesia
  2. Your Love
  3. We Are
  4. Why Don't You (Josie Akers vocals)
Review: Having made a name for himself releasing on Dirt Crew, Outernational and the like, Ben La Desh now brings his ranging take on house music to Young Adults with a veritable spread of tones and styles up his sleeve. The EP kicks off with "Afrodesia", which piles the synth pop notes on heavy over a driving rhythm section in a wistful mixture caught somewhere between boogie and techno. "Your Love" follows up with a lounge-friendly diversion that gleefully loops up samples and hooks in a laid back re-edit style, while "We Are" takes that easy-going approach and works into a more searching piece of low slung house music. "Why Don't You" wraps the EP up with a sassy Chicago-esque jam that benefits from the soulful injection Josie Akers vocals bring to the table.

  1. It's Alright (8:15)
  2. It's Alrigh (Otwo Reconstruction mix) (7:25)
Review:
Italian deep house producer Reekee returns to his own Wrong Notes label with another trip through beautifully rendered, highly musical soulful house. It's little wonder he has been snapped up by labels like Uzuri in the past. "It's Alright" is a track with huge crossover appeal, tapping into the kind of expressive keys that should sit right with soul heads as much as house devotees. The vocals add to the soaring melodic content, making this a life-affirming jam perfect for creating unforgettable, unifying dancefloor moments. Otwo gets busy with the track on the B-side, turning out a daring remix that spaces the core ingredients out with more than a little guidance from the Theo Parrish school of deep-rooted experimentation.

Review: Fully tapped into the true US tradition of soulful house music, Riccardo Masi has been delivering the goods for the past couple of years to labels like Uzuri and his own Wrong Notes Records. On this new single the good vibes just keep on flowing, kicking off with Erik Rico's on-point vocal draped over "Reaching". Rico also forms the centre point of "No One Else", another masterclass in pattering drums and honey-coated keys. "Tortellini Jazz" shores up on the B-side, drafting in Paolo Campani to lay down some sultry sax tones over the mellow chords and playful Rhodes trills.

Review: Having previously appeared on Roots Underground, Reekee kicks off Wrong Notes with yet more grooves that tap into the spirit of truly passionate soulful house. The aptly named Billy Love's vocals aim straight for the heart on "Love Is", with the original mix being especially moving with its lingering jazz chords, string licks and stuttering beat. The "Bluesy" mix has a more traditional deep house feel to it, while "Wurli Things" heads off into expressive Rhodes territory thanks to limber keys work from Jacopo Moschetto. For classically informed house music from the heart, look no further.

Review: Manchester's Garth Be is up next on esteemed London based imprint Wolf Music. This is his latest release since last year's Law Of Fives EP on Ruf Kutz. Much like fellow homeboy and elder statesman Trus'Me, he channels the dusty, soulful and emotive sounds of the Motor City like that of Kenny Dixon Jr and Theo Parrish et al and even sneaks in a few cheeky disco edits like on the intro "Feelin To Be". On the evocative "Pashun" we have a right wicked jam packed full of tight and dusty rhythms, neon-lit synths and emotive chord progressions. The late night deepness of "Allens" is another worthy addition to this collection of fine tunes, as is the off-kilter minimal electro of "Jodisho" and the absolutely saturated lo-fi/slo-mo bliss of "Jonse".

  1. Adventures In Lagos

  3. Disorganics
  4. Silver Lining (Horace Silver RIP)
Review: "The second release for Danny Ward's (dubble d/moodymanc) Well Cut Records features an ep from "Balaphonic". A project which fuses organic live instrumentation and musicianship with deep and modal dancefloor sensibilities.
"Adventures in Lagos" is a long evolving and deep building hypnotic afro groove featuring spoken word samples of Fela Kuti and street sounds taken from 1970s Lagos.
"Three Strikes and Out" is a lush sounding deep, 119 bpm organic groove which builds into a percussion workout and has been championed of late to great effect in the sets of Osunlade.
Opening side 2, "Disorganics" is a nod toward the great Brazillian recordings of the 1960s and seventies yet keeps the tempo firmly locked for the dancefloor. Live samba percussion opens into themes built on 10 string guitar parts and a driving double bass line which build to a melodic drop based on a theme played on plucked cello! Definitely one for the heads!.
Closing the e.p. is "Silver Lining", in tribute to the late great jazz musician and musical visionary Horace Silver. Dark, ride driven, earthy house drums propel a modal grand piano and double bass riff to build the tension which evolves with an ever expanding analogue synth line, keeping energy high whilst percussion and string parts develop to augment the dynamics!

Review: We Play The Music We Love is an Italian and Uk based party that after 7 years of activity has decided to start with its own vinyl only label. The first release comes from one of the founders and resident DJ of the collective: RILLS. He clearly stamping his mark on the label with two solid tracks to launch things with some claut.

The two original tracks, one featuring Sinderesi, explore some dubby house territory with mesmerising chords that will be appreciated on any demanding dancefloor.

The additional remix is from the producer of the moment: Samuel Andre Madsen a.k.a. S.A.M. (Oscillat, Delaphine, Mandar, Fathers and Sons).

Review: The prolific Finnish production powerhouse Trevor Deep Jr is back, this time landing on We Play The Music We Love with an urgent collection of machine-made techno delights for all times of the night. Lapien's remix of "Lights Go Out" is the perfect starting point for this EP, riding on thrumming acid bass and haunting pads with a rock solid beat thundering away in the middle. "#dub4 (Tape Mix)" meanwhile ploughs a much deeper furrow into, as you might well have guessed, dub techno, but that's just a foil for the powerful thrust of the original version of "Lights Go Out" which spreads itself across the whole B-side.

Review: On this second 12" celebrating the label's tenth birthday, We Play House boss Red D has assembled a stellar line-up of sought-after and unreleased cuts. The EP begins with a second airing for FCL's Adonis-influenced, retro-futurist gem "More Than Seven" (first released back in 2010), before the previously unheard DJ Longsleeve bathes us in the soapy, relaxing waters of blissful deep house shuffler "Ode Aan De Filosofie". The quality threshold remains refreshingly high on side B, where Reggie Dokes' loose and positive piano house jam "Earth, Wind and Fire" is followed by the intergalactic, acid-fired pulse of Luv Jam's superb "Grarf".

Review: DJ Sotofett's Wania imprint closes a wild and entertaining 2017 off with a pair of masterful EPs, both of them showcasing the Norwegian's genre-crossing tastes and outlook. First up is this steely 10", spear-headed by newcomer Salik, out of London Town. Up until now, the imprint has predominantly focussed on the US styles of dance music, a rough and ever-quirky blend of house and techno, but Salik's "Inna Brixton" verges on much more UK-centric territories with its near six minute spew of moody energy, clicking and bouncing steadily to the sound of deep, treacherous sub bass. The flipside features DJ SO-PHAT himself, coming through with a beatless away of acid-tinged melodies that blend into a tight little rhythm, before dissipating into a loose pool of drones and bass - Sotofett at his most outlandish. An essential buy.

Review: Vinyl Only reach their seventh release with a fresh grip of lesser known producers bringing high grade grooves to the table. Bubbadog opens the 12" up in a woozy fashion with the warbling piano chords of "Goin' Round", capturing a time-slip mood that carries through to the dusty jazz soaked beat down of Minus The Majors' "Strole On Through". On the B-side, Alex Zuiev gets into an exotic, chiming, 80s-inflected mood on "Down By The River", creating a slow-burning dancefloor heater out of classic ingredients. Ugly Frankie finishes the EP off with the stripped down funk of "Your Ears Look Great".

"Oldest Friend" is an airy, dreamlike track laden with upper register chords, tones and FX pinging around in a reverie of deep house delight, while "Questions" gets locked into a loose, swinging groove with some mysterious pads swirling around the middle distance for added atmosphere. "Some Day" is a more rugged affair that bumps and wriggles in all the right places, while "Eleven Days" explores broken beat territory without losing the hazy atmosphere that permeates the EP.

"Forces & Gravity" is perfectly honed to get the maximum response from the dance with its muscular production and catchy vocal sample, but if you want an even more focused affair the remix strips things down to the bare necessities and works just as effectively. On the B side "Horizon" gets a touch more playful in its synth work with interplaying riffs creating a dazzling whole, and then "Solar Storm" brings the heads-down, hard-swinging heaviness into the mix in a devastating finishing blow.

The strings and keys come in seductive, nocturnal arrangements, while the snippets of vocal come from true soul divas, all atop of bumping garage house funk. Review: Tom Dicicco is best known for his stern techno output, so it's intriguing to seem him donning a new alias, Veyg, and exploring a new sound palette. As with the last Veyg 12", the tone here is somewhere around the slower tempo, discoid acid end of the spectrum, and he's made the sound his own. "My Sweet Soul" is a dusty affair with squashed drums and looped up bongos rubbing up against trippy globules of lysergic monosynth action. "When They Fall" is a downcast electro track for rainy Sundays, while "These Feelings" waits for the clouds to break and dances on the damp lawn with no shoes on. "West Of The Sun" is the most adventurous offering on the 12", escaping the 4/4 thud and twirling in an off-grid stylee with ample dub FX tugging the melodic parts around in a mellifluous haze of experimentation.

Review: Newcomer Tom Dicicco aka Veyg presents an ear snagging selection of leftfield beatdowns here for adventurous spinners on the fringes of the party. "Mutual Romance" is a quivering, shimmering trip through crooked house beats and crunchy yet dubby synth flourishes to delight the mind. "Virgo Love Affair" has a sweeter lilt, but it's no less wayward in its execution, but then "Filling Pieces" heads into more explicit deep house territory with some blissed out melodic content riding atop a deep diving US-flavoured rhythm section. "How We Live" ramps up the meandering dub processing, with tripped out filter sweeps and panning lending a psychedelic edge to this smoked out joint.

Review: Last summer, Ultra Knites Records kicked off a series of "Knite Grooves" EP's. UKR006 sees label owners Sem Marini and Mike Sharon make a reappearance for summer 2015, this time under their "Ultra Knites" pseudonym for the third instalment of the Knite Grooves series. As has come to be expected from the pair- two tracks on the A side which ooze class and deepness, laced with melodic keyboard solos - elements that were once a staple in the Deep House genre but have since bceome scarce during recent years. Flipping over to the B side, the pair welcome fresh talent from across the water in the form of a collaboration between US producer Trevor Vichas and Netherlands based Tommy Largo. There's two mixes here of "Gonna Hold On" both of which capture the essence of real Underground House music and maintain the ethos of Ultra Knites Records.

Review: The ever strong Tusk Wax empire continues apace with this assured slice of cosmic tinkering from the somewhat mysterious Pork & Tony, supposedly featuring Private Agenda. Who's responsible hardly matters - the jams are what counts, and they're impeccable slices of disco-informed boogie crafted with woozy nights and red lights in mind. "Rhythm Ride" is a seductive trip peppered with (presumably Agenda's) vocals, and "Luke's Summer" gets gently melancholic while thumping out a rugged machine beat. Jay Shepheard comes on board to remix "Luke's Summer" and does so in a measured, patiently paced manner. Coyote's take on "Rhythm Ride" dubs the whole thing out magnificently, pushing the track even further out of the stratosphere thanks to shimmering dub processing and a nagging acid line.

It's an assured trip into buttery smooth deep house for those who likes things sensual, starting off with the plush tones of "Falling In Your Arms" featuring the soulful vox of Shareen. "A Genuine World" is another hazy gem of a track, setting adrift on a bed of harmonious chords and achingly understated bass. "Poti Poti" is a spicier affair that pushes the beat to the foreground and gets a little choppier with the chords. Grant Focus turns in a remix of "A Genuine World" that strides confidently into rock solid deep house territory once more, extending the scope of this EP while maintaining the consistent vibe.

There's a chunky, looped up quality to "Silver Suitcase" with its insistent bass lick and slamming drums, but there's equal space for soul thanks to the string-loaded sample hook. By way of contrast "Lunaire" fires up the acid flare and heads straight into a babbling brook of 303-related goodness. "Amsterdam" rounds the EP off on a stomp, whipping up the kind of bombastic disco drama that would get Studio 54 moving were it in action today.

His fearless, deeply rooted take on house music defies imitation, and so it goes across this full-fat EP. "Request Monster" is a lazy groove embellished with strings protesting the culture of requests in the club, while "A Lot Of Jazz As A Child" doffs its cap to Sun Ra in a subtle way that manages to be both mechanical and free-flowing. "If EYE Was From The D" is a more overtly electronic production that sits somewhere in between acid, techno and deep house. "Crossing Dimensions" is an uplifting workout with a sweet vocal turn from an unknown source, and then "Jami Jam Dubb'd" finishes the record off with a primal set of ingredients working round a stout kick.

Review: Bush is a new project from a wandering musical mind and it all kicks off with a seriously deep and otherworldly house EP that ditches the usual tired tropes and fawning fads, and instead fully submerges listeners in an uncompromisingly serene and seductive world miles below the surface.
Opening up label's account is 'Peckings,' initially a deep and spacious bit of beatless atmospheric sound that eventually turns into a propulsive house jam with icy hi hats, swathes of reverb and oodles of late night mysticism. 'OG18' is another devilishly deep and spiritual bit of house with luxurious amounts of open space in which various pads float and drift about. It's seductive and spaced out stuff before 'Legome' toys with raw claps, swelling chords and undulating drums in louche fashion. There's a restraint and musicality to this track that betrays a real production mastery and, lastly, 'Lockdown' is again a hugely subterranean affair with snaking pads, watery textures and muffled drums all coalescing into a nocturnal dreamscape that gets subtle driven along by rubbery kick drums.
This is seriously deep, classy music that is richly atmospheric and effortlessly cerebral, and the EP overall marks a fine way to inaugurate a new label.

Review: Aubrey's Don Gardon alias was a one-shot decoy deployed in 1997 with the now highly sought-after "Textures" 12" on Aubrey's own Textures label. While the provenance of these new tracks is a little foggy at this stage, what you can be sure of is the grade of techno we're dealing with here. Aubrey's illustrious career speaks for itself, and so do these tracks in the first Textures release since 2001. "The Phase" is an effervescent, funk laced race to the stars, while "Vari Tube" takes a more intimate route through dusty house that wouldn't sound out of place in the Workshop stratosphere. "Slam Dunk" is a cheeky, jazzy affair while "Dons Slide" gets a little more freaky and far out in the finest tradition of B2 tracks.

The former's inexorable rise in 2010 has perhaps been matched by the worldwide popularity of the latter's "I Need A Dollar", so getting Mr Niemerski on board to remix the track was a smart move. The end results are typically appealing, with Blacc's vocals looped brilliantly around a burning deep house arrangement that peaks in all the right places. The central energetic pulse of cavernous bass stabs and slick hi-hats are inundated by massive swathes of soaring chords as the track progresses, with the requisite breakdowns augmented by choral vocal refrains. Totally euphoric in its intentions and execution, this is bound to have devastating effects when implemented at the right time.

  2. Hot Coffee - "On The Verge" (6:24)
  3. M. Vaughan - "Man 2 Man" (6:48)
  4. Tilman - "A Day To Remember" (6:32)
Review: Super Tuff is a relatively new concern hailing from Brooklyn, committed to presenting a broad range of talent from the more curious corners of the house spectrum. On this third release we're introduced to the delightful sound of DJ Heure, who unfurls wonderful pattering percussion, jazzy notes and a mellow, ambient finish to pull at the heartstrings. There's a slightly more forthright thump to Hot Coffee's "On The Verge", but it's still a dusky twist on the typical deep house formula. Label boss M. Vaughan brings things a little more upfront on "Man 2 Man", and top-drawer German producer Tilman weaves a rich and invigorating tale with his swooning "A Day To Remember".

Review: Hot on the Cuban heels of "Nacao" comes another scorching hot Latin fusion from London-based virtuoso Claudio Passavanti. Loaded with an all-star cast comprising master percussionist Giovanni Imparato, Ronnie Scotts resident Rene Alvarez, the dancefloor-minded beat is peppered with Cuban percussion and vocal rhythms and lavish jazzy swings to the keys. Remix-wise Kay Suzuki provides two-for-one; an outstanding Balearic toe-tickler massaged with just the right amount of cosmicity and the naked drum track which is an odyssey in itself. Oye oye.

  3. Heat (Bout That Life mix)
Review: Sudd Records has been going for some time as a digital-only label, but now they make the leap to vinyl with the help of Detroit champ Gari Romalis. "Abstraxx (Linear Mix)" kicks off the record in a heady fog of undulating pads, the smoke positively drifting out of the speaker cones over a simple, deep-as-you-like drum pattern. "Dark Ryda (Sunset Mix)" gets a little more funk in its rhythm, but the same mellow mood prevails, almost reaching dub techno levels in its atmospheric chord swells. "Heat (Bout That Life Mix)" takes things out of the darkness and into a lighter frame of mind, but Romalis is still firmly in the deep end of the deep house pool with this final cut on the record.

  1. Hmong Dignity (club mix)
  2. Hmong Dignity (Aaron-Carl remix)
  3. Hmong Dignity (DJ Bone remix)
Review: Fabrice Lig on DJ Bone's Subject Detroit label backed with killer remixes from Aaron Carl and DJ Bone! Allegedly stored in the Subject archives for some time, "Hmong Dignity" is finally unleashed and the original will be familiar to anyone that's witnessed a DJ Bone set in recent years. Eminently raw, but filled with melody thanks to those chords and restless riffs, "Hmong Dignity" is a fine example of how Detroit influenced European techno. A remix from the late, great Aaron Carl opens the B Side, lending the track a familiar dose of murkiness thanks to some stomach churning bass, whilst that instantly recognisable central melody is wisely retained. The accompanying remix from DJ Bone glides along on a tough techno meets electro vibe, superbly slicing up the melodic element to form an entirely different refrain.

  1. Movimento (Conscio mix)
  2. Movimento (Inconscio mix)
Review: Battista, John Swing and EMG's first hook-up under the SPS moniker - the thrillingly hard-to-pigeonhole Sintomi Di Gravita 12" - was arguably one of 2014's most slept-on records. Here they join forces for round two, delivering another two tracks that neatly sidestep the accepted norms of house and techno. A-side "Movimento (Consico Mix)" is a wonky chunk of well-swung, jazz-flecked deep house, smothered in filters and tipsy chords. Flip for the Inconsico Mix of the same track, a brilliantly far-out fusion of odd electronics, glitchy rhythms, shimmering synths and bubbling found sounds. It's hardly dancefloor-centric, but it's certainly really, really good.

Review: Jenifa Mayanja and Dakini 9's Sound Warrior label continues to fly the flag for female house producers, this time inviting North Carolina DJ Lady Fingers to make an appearance with the smoky throwdown of "Depth". Mayanja herself then steps up with the ethereal, broken beat tones of "Get Off My Back," Berlin-based Ena Lind takes things in a dramatic, evocative direction on "High & Over" before Lady Blacktronika delivers her inimitable style of shimmering house music with the hi-hat shaking "Chance Of Love." Executed with warmth and intrigue, the Warrior Formulation 12" is another direct hit for Sound Warrior - as if we expected anything less.

  3. Jenifa Mayanja - "Night Walker" (6:57)
  4. Dakini9 - "Limbic Resonance" (6:15)
Review: The Sound Warrior label focusses on releasing music by female house and techno producers, an extended collection of women who share a similar vision of dance music. The label is run by Jenifa Mayanja and Dakini 9 - the latter being part of NY's Plan B imprint alongside DJ Spider - and the girls are back with two new faces for the label's fourth outing. Daniela La Luz's "Milkus" is a mid-tempo chugger with evil percussion and a funky chord hook, while "The Only" by Whim EE is darker, more deranged and of a lo-fi nature. On the flip, Mayanja's "Night Walker" is a tribal affair with a deep, growling bassline and "Limbic Resonance" by Dakini 9 is the hardest cut of them all, the certified techno head-nodder among the deeper tracks. Tough.

Review: Sneaky Music maintain the pressure that the label's debut release from Silk 86 built up, welcoming London pairing Ashworth & Kiwi into the fold with the Dawn EP. South London based Kiwi's music combines influences from disco, funk and house and has notable released on Needwant and Deepshit, whilst East Londoner Ashworth debuted on Balsaal, garnering support from Dixon, DJ T and Josh Wink and recently teamed up with Citizen for Waze & Odyssey's label W&O Street Trax. Lead track 'UCX3' is a drawn-out, gradually swelling, half-euphoric-half-pumping roller, which the guys would be happy to admit was heavily influenced by Pachanga Boys' "Time." Demonstrating a more mellow side, "Zubr" has Ashworth showing off his prowess with the Wurlitzer whilst "Dusk" is arguably the wild card. Staying clear of the drum machines, this track paints a subtlety epic picture with a reverb-drenched piano and folksy violin drones, all being driven forwards by an ominous pulsating Moog bass.

Review: Smile & Wave appears from out of nowhere with two unknown names heading up the first release. There's no indication of who is behind A Houseband or Russian Hackers, but both of them have done a damn fine job of bringing two sure fire killers to wax. The first is "Another Love Another Happiness", which as the title candidly suggests is yet another version of the oft-sampled "Love & Happiness", this time framed in a bubbling, dubby deep house context for the mellow heads to soak up. By way of contrast Russian Hackers get busy with "303", bringing some forthright jack to the table.

Review: Slow Town's 17th release from Melbournes Luis CL is an ode to analogue jams. The Cran town EP shows what Luis CL (one half of the Zanzibar Chanel duo and co-founder of Ruff Records) is know for: Dirty but groovy drum arrangements, analogue synths and dreamy melodies and his kind of lo-fi and blurry mixdowns with definitely some Detroit influences. The three tracks were recorded in one take during his studio sessions.
