Review: Erol Alkan's 'A Hold On Love' originally appeared at the top of his debut 2013 EP Illumination, and now he's ushered it out of hibernation to make a pair of new versions which nudge the endearingly catchy, big room techno stylings in distinct but compatible directions. First up is the 'dyna-mix', which works around bugging b-lines and dubby shimmers for a restrained, subtly psychedelic affair. The 'trip-mix' meanwhile whips up some dusty garage house breaks, snappy 909 claps and hooky stabs to get the heat turned up in the dance good and proper. It's a fine example of the Midas touch Alkan brings to club music even when revisiting former glories.

Review: Roggtrax is the latest of many alter-egoic endeavours by Matthieu Roggwiller (aka. Mattrogg) since 2020. His latest 12", 'The Docksides Boy', is a minimal, surfy disco wave-braving - an instrumental dance project homing in on the defined edges of early '80s "Anglo-Saxon disco, blended with sub-Saharan African disco, new wave and art pop of the time. Building off its own coinage - 'electropical' ambience - the sonic palette here is smooth, rhythmical and oded to the guitar, with casual disco hookers like 'Strato' and 'Finger' both in name and in content recalling the image of fingerstyling while overlooking a Mediterranean sundown.

He is still very much kicking out the jams all these decades on, always with a nice sharp groove and crisp hi hats. That is the case again here with his Mercy EP on Kick-n-Dance which ones with the striped back and infectious 'Broccoli', gets more deep and vibes with 'Lettuce' and comes doused in soul in the case of the flipside opener 'Whas Happenin' which channels Marvin Gaye. Review: Fad-free French house label Skylax has always done its own thing, and always to a great reception amongst serious heads. This new one from Quasar is an impossibly perfect mix of physical drums and heart-aching vocal hooks. The pitched up female vocal conveys such bittersweet pain it doesn't matter the words she sings as you're immediately drawn in for the ride. 'For Your Love' is another hugely emotional cut with floating breakbeats and nagging vocals that really get you where it hurts. 'Morning Bells' is a deep house cut with a spritely groove and blissed out vocal, and 'Inside My Love' closes with more heavy analogue drums but no less of a heartfelt sound thanks to the melancholic pads.

Review: Backatcha continues to delve into the back catalogue of British 80s soul outfit Intrigue, a combo born in the Britfunk and boogie era whose independently released records have long been sought-after by disco diggers and record collectors alike. Having already reissued the band's best-known tune, 1982's 'I Like It', they've now turned their attention to a more overlooked gem: 1986 single 'One Touch'. Glossy, colourful and effortlessly soulful, it's a fine chunk of polished, club-ready 80s street soul with nods to electrofunk. Review: Tommaso Garofalo, better known as Turbojazz, is a Milanese DJ and producer with a knack for creating dreamy and soulful house music. His latest EP, Turbojazz & Friends, is a collection of four tracks that showcase his signature style, with each track offering a slightly different take on deep house. The EP opens with 'Like You' a collaboration with Rona Ray that features her sultry vocals over a bed of breezy, soulful house beats. The Sean McCabe remix of the track adds a bit more bounce and tech house flair, giving it a more club-friendly feel. 'Take 3' created with Broke One, takes a jazzy, funky turn, with a big piano breakdown that adds a touch of drama. The EP closes with Star Chaser' a deeper house gem with a dubby bassline and ethereal synths. Fans of Naked Music should really be at home with these soulful vocals, jazzy undertones and deep house grooves.

This release via Groovin Italy hears two fresh remixes from Grant Nelson and Avant Garde, and brings contemporary weight to their original deep-south Latin house forte.

Review: Omakase, which is the name of a style of Japanese dining that means literally 'I leave it up to you' and gives full control of a meal to the chef in question, is also now an ever more vital minimal label. This is its third outing and one with Antraum at the helm. It kick off with 'Hyaku' with its bluesy vocal samples and lazy, infectious drum loops, then has 'Shichi' has more silky and spaced out pads and smooth grooves. 'Rei' is a dreamy one with balmy chords making for a trippy late night day dream and is the sort of track that will zoned out dance floors at 5 am. A tasteful EP for sure.

Review: First released way back in 1982 but exceedingly hard to find ever since, Intrigue's 'I Like It' is a classic slab of Brit-funk era UK boogie whose lyrics playfully muse on craving cash when you have very little ("I really want your love but I'd rather have the money and I like it"). This Backactcha Records reissue features both versions from the original 12" - the EP-leading full vocal mix and the longer, more club-focused flip-side instrumental - as well as what appears to be a previously unreleased remix. This builds up brilliantly via drums and short rap sections before introducing the killer basslibe, pianos, synths and lead vocals. It's a fantastic and arguably more club-ready take on a much-loved but previously impossible-to-find Brit-boogie classic.

Review: Mystic V debuted last summer with 'Ever Since That Day I Met You' and now they're back on Leman with a follow-up that comes heavily endorsed by a remix by Atlantan legend Kai Alce. The latter's NDATL mixes of 'Miracles' come in vocal and instrumental versions, both bursting with the life-affirming, soul-stirring sounds we all know and love from the US legend. Let's not forget the original version of the track though, which opens up the B-side in a dreamy cascade of piano keys and honey-coated vocals above a smooth and funky bassline you could sink your teeth into, it's substantial. It's a masterclass of deep house, neatly contrasted by the techier strains of 'All One's Hopes' to make for a thoroughly fulfilling EP from a rising talent.
