Deep House
Right Spot (5:21)
Right Spot (Dennis Ferrer remix) (6:07)
Right Spot (Byron The Aquarius remix) (5:06)
Review: New to Crosstown Rebels' 12"s encampment is producer HoneyLuv, who impresses on her debut release for the Damian Lazarus-run label with the fresh heat that is 'Right Spot'. Corralling remixes from Dennis Ferrer and Byron The Aquarius, HoneyLuv's palette is watery, polyrhythmic, hip-housey and fast-moving, channelling every smart move from transitional 'wubs' to tambaleironautic drum progressions, which back up the beats firmly, and move so fast that they could probably snap an ossified hipbone if played back loud enough. The track's central vocal is also an original vocal, pleading with the listener that they meet HoneyLuv at the correct rendezvous, aka. the 'spot', in order to catch the right rave-wave.

Review: Damian Lazarus's Crosstown Rebels label has ridden out many different waves of popular sounds and always remained relevant. Right now it looks to Made By Pete for a new 12" that has a gritty, low slung and sleazy tech house vibe. 'Fires' has menacing basslines and steamy vocalisations that make for an unsettling mood. UK tech house titan Bushwacka! then remixes with his signature sense of drive thou with slithy more deep and pensive pads than usual. A dub mix is also included as is a rework from Victor Calderone & Mykol that is full of late night mischief.

Review: Designed with a dual purpose - setting the label's agenda for the year ahead and introducing new signings - Crosstown Rebels' SPIRITS series has long been a must-check source of dependable tech-house tracks. Naturally, there's plenty of highlights to be found across this sixth annual edition. Our current favourites including the throbbing, percussion-rich, big room tech-house excellence of 'The Vision' by Cameron Jack; the acid-fired heaviness of Lauren Lane's 'Fair Game', with its wobbly sub-bass and echoing Latin drum hits; the crackling, mind-mangling tech-house psychedelia of 'So Deep' by Cristina Lazic and Leia Contois; and the fiendishly bass-heavy tribal-tech wonder that is Inigo Vontier's accurately titled 'That Trippy Sound'.

Dennis Cruz & Ian Ludvig - "Pain Away" (5:47)
Review: Dennis Cruz is a tune making machine. The Spaniard turns out plenty of house and tech variations on several notable labels and always manages to find a little freshness with each one. Here he is on Damian Lazarus-owned Crosstown Rebels with a couple of solo cuts but also two collaborations. Opener 'Snake Charmer' has a lead flute moody that will do just that over steamy jungle house beats while 'Time Out' is a stripped back house sound deiced by its huge diva vocals. The collabs are firstly 'Revolution' (feat DJ Holographic) with Lazarus himself, which is a slinky and liquid tech house sound for the dead of night, then a minimal and dark roller with Ian Ludvig.

Review: Many congratulations to Crosstown Rebels, a pioneering tech-house and big room dance music imprint that this year celebrates its 20th birthday. To mark the occasion, founder and creative force Damian Lazarus has dipped into the archives and come up with a collection of rarities and previously unheard remixes. Starting with his own Jem Cooke collaboration 'Into The Sun', an atmospheric, deep tech-house excursion smothered in twinkling pianos and trance-inducing electronics, Lazarus offers up an enticing mix of chunky goodness (Art Department remixing Jamie Jones), percussion-rich after-hours wonkiness (Dennis Cruz reworked Pier Bucci), pulsating neo-trance (Audiojack re-imagined by Michael Mayer), tech-tinged deep house hypnotism (Black Coffee tweaking Made By Pete vs Zoe Kypri) and saucer-eyed Ibiza anthems (Maceo Plex).

Flash Point (8:35)
Transposed Sky (feat Paul Brenning) (5:34)
Review: Jonathan Kaspar returns to Damien Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels for another round of captivating and melodic techno by way of his latest EP 'We Come'. Already having graced the discographic annals of Cocoon and Kompakt, Kaspar's sound is now well established; his pushes and pulls adeptly between big room, dubby trance and broken-down electro and house, never quite placeable in the intermediary spaces between them. One could call it progressive house, but that would be underselling it; 'Flash Point' is the highlight here and the case in point, making masterful use of ducking and distortion to really flesh out the central syncopated stab as a focal point of the track. Nor should Paul Brenning's version of 'Transposed Sky' be missed for a second.

Relax Shiva (DJ Gregory remix) (7:00)
Review: 2023 has already seen the mighty Red Axes bringing their distinctive chugged-up, freaked-out style to Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound, but now they're following up with this epic slice of deep immersion for Damian Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels. 'Relax Shiva' is steeped in finely-balanced trance touches which err towards genuine meditation than the slightly more obvious ends of the genre. It's a smouldering, slow-burn affair, but then what else would you expect from the Tel Aviv duo? When you get to the flip, Parisian legend DJ Gregory is on hand to thread his own set of psychoactive drums in around the Axes' sonic elements, creating a different kind of vessel for dancefloor escapism of the most spiritual nature.

Review: If you ever doubted that Crosstown Rebels put out a genuine eclectic range of underground electronic sounds than check this one out - Lunar Disco bring some sleazy indie disco vibes to this one. 'Devil's Hand' has filthy bass and bumping drums with steamy vocals from singer-songwriter Kate Elsworth. DJ and composer Nicolas Blistene is behind the beats and a host of remixers add their own spin. The standout is from Swiss-Chilean master Luciano who does his textbook string and percussive thing. AudioFly's Anthony Middleton remixes with a more late night tech feel.

Analog Bugz
Review: Harry Romero returns to Crosstown Rebels as he links with vocalist Shyam P for 'Mind Games'. With a catalogue as rich as any and continuing at the top of his game two decades after his emergence within New York's fabled nightlife scene, Romero continues to serve up his own take of Latin-inspired and percussive-driven house music via a long list of the industry's leading imprints. Crafting a slick and heady groove before launching into a hypnotic haze accenting by a bubbling bassline, 'Mind Games' is an infectious and vibrant house cut as Shyam P's alluring vocals take hold amongst emotive builds and breaks. 'Mira', after, is a classic Romero offering as the focus shifts to crisp organic percussion arrangements, carnival-esque whistles and hooky Latin vocals for a bustling terrace number, before 'Analog Bugz' takes cues from its title as crisp drum shots and sharp stabs unite to create a no-nonsense builder made for the main room.

Review: Damian Lazarus' 16-track Get Lost mix has been stirring up iPod's at afterparties galore since it release earlier this month - here the Crosstown Rebels honcho releases a sumptuous double vinyl boasting five exclusive tracks from the mix, kicking off with Dinky's "Owls". The Argentinean comes up with a typically minimalesque Latino groove, with some endearing tenderness wedged below the grit. "Japan", from German favourite Acid Pauli, is spacious and hypnotic in his unique amalgamation of cosmic beats, while on the second cut, Brouqade label owner Dana Ruh contributes the suitably hazy "Night Till Dawn". Fosky and Shiva serve up the housiest number of the lot, with punchy vocals, a deep rolling bassline and breaks galore; Mario & Vidis complete the package with the moody and experimental "Kashyyyk".

Sex Appeal
Review: ** Rebels Repress for the Plex Fans ** Just in time to join in another Miami attack by the Rebels crew, Maceo Plex delivers two prime cuts, showcasing his undeniable gift for seductive grooves. Aptly named 'Frisky', Maceo is clearly gearing up for the party/mating season with this next installment on Crosstown Rebels. Title track 'Frisky' has all the flair of a Maceo floor burner, destined to warm bodies as the night draws in and set the mood for fun and friskiness. With a sprinkling of classic Maceo dust over the mid-tempo chugging groove, the bassline rumbles below that well renowned funk and there's no doubt Maceo's reign over slinky hypnotic house is set to continue. Continuing in the smokey house vein but lifting the tempo for the later crowd, 'Sex Appeal' is another ode to the fairer members of the species and injects a little romance into the more bumping slice of Maceo gold on offer here. A dose of acid and a breakdown and slow build of shooting synths until the melodic bassline drop is sure to raise the roof (terrace).

Review: The hitherto unknown but clearly talented Amirali were first introduced to the world when Damian Lazarus handpicked one of his productions to open proceedings on last year's Get Lost 4 mix CD. It was clear Lazarus had larger plans for the Iranian Canadian producer, and following a breakthrough Crosstown 12" earlier this year the label now presents the full artistic vision of Amirali in the shape of a debut album. In Time demonstrates Amirali Shahrestani has an uncanny talent for veering between the many strands of contemporary electronic music, each of the thirteen tracks weaved together intoxicatingly with his undeniable craft as a musician. Amidst the usual Crosstown fare such as "Just an Illusion" and the delightfully wonked "Beautiful World" there are more introspective moments which lend In Time a sense of longevity lacking from so many "dance music albums."

Our Time In Liberty (Russ Yallop remix)
Review: Having worked his way to the top over the past 12 months, it would appear Jamie Jones isn't keen on letting slip his grip on our affections. A precursory hint at what to expect from Jones' second LP due out on Crosstown Rebels is offered up by Lazarus & co with "Our Time In Liberty" the lead track from the album, notable for the guest vocal from aficionados Art Department and the accompanying Russ Yallop remix. Pretty much the perfect Crosstown twelve inch, right? Anyone who spends their days digging through YouTube will probably be familiar with the original, Kenny Glasgow's distinct refrain adding a haunting element over a bass heavy groove that gradually comes to be consumed by the procession of synth stabs, complemented by a markedly tougher remix from Senor Yallop.

Review: Those with a cursory grasp of recent shifts in niche dance music will be fully aware of Luca C and Ali Love, the duo behind Infinity Ink. The former was once an integral part of Cazals whilst the latter has dabbled in all manner of East London scenes over the years. Arising on Crosstown Rebels as Infinity Ink is undoubtedly their most high profile release and they come sporting a new genre in cosmic garage, which sort of sounds like Art Department doing hip house on the basis of "Infinity". Label head Lazarus pulls out a top drawer (and quite appropriate) remixer in the shape of Todd The God Edwards, who drops a signature revision filled with stacatto swinging rhythms and vocal tweaks.

Now officially the world's number one DJ (according to readers of Resident Advisor, at least), Jones could record and release the sound of a car alarm and it would be hailed a "classic". Cynicism aside, the Crosstown Rebels regular has made some extremely high quality house over the years, as this collection of previously unreleased archive material so adroitly proves. Expect plenty of soft, touchy-feely material (including an excellent collaboration with Art Department) that offers plenty of thrills for fans of the Visionquest/Crosstown Rebels sound.

The track has already been tweaked by Real Tone's Franck Roger but this twelve is the one, with MK opting for a moody yet sultry house direction, slipping Amirali's melancholic vocal over a trademark bassline dub groove complemented by plenty of those 90s snares, kicks and hi hats. In contrast, Appleblim continues his revelatory run of remixes (did you check those Crazy P ones? Goddamn!) with a more experimental approach that fills the expanses around stripped back, snapping percussive mainframe with a murky low end.
