Review: After a five year album-hiatus, the iconic UK artist is back with his highly-anticipated release, Crash Recoil, which has found its home on the equally iconic Tresor. Drawn from the spontaneous experimentation of Surgeon's live sets, Crash Recoil spans eight MIDI-sequenced, hardware-reconfigured tracks, inflected with the artist's signature penchant for raw and rugged sound. The first track, 'Oak Bank', builds up to a throbbing core - a cacophony of driving percussion and side-stepping melodic layers that shift expertly in and out of focus. 'Second Magnitude Stars' moves with a tidal rhythm, like waves retreating backwards across shingle before crashing forwards once again with force. 'We Laugh & Clap At The Circus' is, texturally speaking, a touch lighter and more spacious, yet still replete with a sense of spiralling chaos. 'Leadership Contes' feels closer to ground-level - earthy yet eerie atmospheres meld with drums that seem located in the subterranean. A masterful album from the techno key-player - well worth the five year wait.

Review: Hot on the heels of Surgeon's recent smash on Counterbalance, "Floorshow Part 1", we have the second instalment...called, not surprisingly, "Floorshow Part 2". Another blinder this one, and again pushing his sound into new territories. Across the four tracks on this 12" we are presented with an eclectic but ultimately coherent selection of styles. A1 perhaps hints strongest at his recent fascination with grime and dubstep styles (which anyone who has seen him DJ recently will have witnessed), utilising as it does a sub-lo style digi-bass set against a classic Surgeon groove. The urgency is picked up on A2 which is a solid jack track, Chicago style, complete with razor-sharp edits. On the flip is a heavy DJ Skull-style shuffler, but the real surprise is saved for the closing track which combines bleeping melodies a la LFO with moody strings and crunchy filtering to create a classic middle of the night moment...Four cuts of techno perfection from an artist that refuses to settle for anything less than the best and who is constantly refining his style and incorporating new influences, rather than jumping on the latest 'cool' sound...

Review: Next in the series of Downwards re-releases is this big one. After a long time out of press, Surgeon's debut LP "Communications" gets re-rubbed with brand new label art and a limited edition clear vinyl pressing (400 copies only). Anyone who knows the history of either Downwards or indeed of Surgeon himself will recognise what a landmark release this was, a clear statement of intent that caused dramatic ripples in the larger techno pond, and ultimately led to his further relationships with Tresor, and high-profile remixes for the likes of Dave Clarke and The Advent, etc. Essentially this is an album that shows a hugely important point in his artistic development - six tracks of raw, metallic techno, created using incredibly simple equipment (usually just one drum machine, one keyboard, and one reverb unit) - but where the whole is considerably more than the sum of its' parts.

Review: More Downwards reissue action, this time we have the hugely influential first release from the British Murder Boys (aka Surgeon and Regis). Now recognised as a classic 12", this was another step forward for the 'Birmingham sound', and once again the Downwards crew created a path that many in the techno scene were to follow, and that launched a host of pale copycat tracks. Unbelievably heavy beats, but with that recognisable funk and subtle use of melody and ambience that just puts it in a different league.

Floorshow (part 3)
Review: Finally, after a long wait of over 4 years, Surgeon returns with 3 brand new solo tracks for his own Counterbalance label. After the industrial wasteland inhabited by the 'British Murder Boys' project this astounding release from Surgeon displays a far less oppressive atmosphere, owing much more to his highly regarded 'Midnight Club Tracks' series from 2000 & 2001. The three tracks display a variety of emotion and atmosphere, suitable even for the most jaded techno palate. Sneak previews of these tracks appeared in mixes available from Surgeon's website causing excitement at the prospect of the release of new solo material. From storming club tracks to more reflective string-laden production, this is a record that covers a lot of ground stylistically, but remains thematically coherent - something which Surgeon has proven time and time again as one of his great strengths over the years. As always he is setting the scene for others to follow.

Review: The techno deity that is Anthony Child, aka Surgeon, compiles the 53rd instalment of the vaulted fabric mix series and my, isn't it something. Fusing tough, raw techno and dubstep, Child takes us on a relentless journey that unites the work of Scuba, Ital Tek and Instra:mental with Mark Broom, James Ruskin and a healthy slew of his own productions. The pounding, bone shattering drop into the Al Tourettes & Appleblim remix of Planetary Assault Systems "X Speaks To X" sums up what Surgeon is all about on this mix - the interbreeding of two genres into one serious workout. Indeed, his chosen moniker has never appeared so apt, cutting and slicing seemingly disparate beats into one flowing narrative. This mix is easily as essential as any of its predecessors, and that's saying something.

Review: Surgeon's huge techno hit "La Real" gets a welcome repress. Originally inspired by the Spanish club of the same name, this mega-selling single developed a new sound in techno at the time that was then lazily (and usually badly) copied by many producers. Always a destroyer in a club, the "max" cut from Dubplates and Mastering gives it an edge that makes it cut through any mix, and it never fails to get feet moving.

Review: One reissue for the heads right here! Some sturdy remakes of tracks from Anthony Child's 1998 album Balance, and they're all as fierce as you'd imagine. "Box (Version II)" is a relentless thrasher with walls of muted snares. "Set One (Version II)" is typical Surgeon; a grating body basher with an offbeat that eventually locks into the 4/4 as all hell breaks loose! Scorn's Mick Harris gives "Dialogue" a typically sinister overhaul; it's a stunning experimental soundscape with a dense and persisting sub bass supporting some seriously futuristic glitches.

Review: This fourth SRX release sees Anthony Child and Dubplates & Mastering engineer Christoph Grote-Beverbor look back to 1995 to remaster one of the first records Surgeon ever released. This four-track EP went on to inspire the name behind Child's own label, Dynamic Tension, which he launched in 1997, and listening back to this reinvigorated version on the mid-'90s original, the boisterous sounds of a young Child (20 years younger in fact) sound all the more visceral. Similarities can be drawn to early Marcel Dettmann productions like "Tattered" in "Balance" and "Poise", which sound like mangled beats spluttering out of blown speakers, while there's splashes of dub techno, albeit Basic Channel, in "Action" and reverb is set to 11 on "Posture".

Review: A fifth saunter through the '90s archives of Anthony Child arrives courtesy of the man's own SRX label, presenting some prime Surgeon material newly remastered by Dubplates & Mastering engineer Christoph Grote-Beverborg. As the title suggests, this 12" draws from Childs' techno experiments circa 1995 and Surgeon fanatics should focus on the two variations of "THX 1139" that originate from a limited and highly prized white label. Complementing these is the pounding minimalist loop techno of "Fivo" and "Paggo" with this latter track sounding so very clean in comparison to the scratchy Youtube videos for its original 12" release on a split with Funk D'Void.

Review: ** REPRESS ** It seems like the last few months of 2014 are going to be quite big for a newly bearded up Surgeon with a series of enticing looking reissues of 90s material under the SRX banner due to commence soon, as well as an incoming British Murder Boys retrospective on DNS. First up, the UK techno legend makes his debut proper on Token with Fixed Action Pattern, a two-track 12? of distorted, broken beat techno tailor-made for the Belgian label. Essentially two variants of the same track, the A Side original is exactly the sort of searing, peak time wall shaker you'd expect when Surgeon meets Token, and it's complemented nicely by a B Side dub version that the label quite aptly compare to Lee Scratch Perry dabbling in industrial electronics.

I Notice You All
Review: News of Surgeon and Blawan working together as Trade for the fifth Works The Long Nights release was unexpected, though hardly surprising given how supportive the former has been of the latter and his fellow UK techno producers in recent times. Unsurprisingly given the calibre of the artists involved, the results pretty spectacular, even taking into account the fact the genre is in something of a purple patch at the moment. "Half Nelson" sees frazzled synths dragged kicking and screaming across savage kickdrums and incomprehensible vocals, while "Positive Neckline" pairs ripcord bass and relentless stabs stabs with frenetic hi-hats. On the flip, "Touch This Skin" dangles its rattling drums like a flayed man hanging from the gallows while "I Notice You All" combines acidic bass with a mechanical rhythm that nevertheless seems irregular in its makeup. While Surgeon's solo material has always hit hard, it's always been characterised by a cleaner sound, but with Blawan in tow things are as rough around the edges as the latter's Karenn material, and it's something very welcome indeed.

Review: Anthony Child claims that the inspiration for his seventh artist album came from using hardware to receive transmissions from far-flung galaxies. He then hooked up with astrophysicist Dr Andrew Read - a former collaborator - to work out the bewildering track titles. That's the concept. The reality is that From Farthest Known Objects is a dense, grainy work. It feels like Child has deconstructed or in some more extreme situations has hacked away at tropes like minimalism, clicks and cuts and dub step to reveal an inner, hidden world. On the first few tracks, this alternate reality resounds to a sluggish pace, amid the crackle and groan of cleaved percussion and tortured subs, but it gradually comes round to stepping, broken beat techno and lunging rhythms. That these also descend into pulverising walls of white noise and nausea-inducing frequency shifts at times also serve as a reminder that Child has tuned into something other or inner-worldly.

A gradual process of evolution over the 24 years that he has been performing to a point where, as he says himself "it really can't be called Djing anymore." The raw essence of these performances are distilled into these four executions of sheer naked aggression. Released on Dynamic Tension, an outlet devoted entirely to Child's work under the Surgeon moniker, unlike his more well known Counterbalance imprint.

Review: The second of the two 12"s using cuts taken from the driving game "Midnight Club", and arguably the better of the two. The main cut starts with a classic Surgeon broken beat before whipping into one of his most slamming grooves and then pulls out a crazy funk bassline to take the track stratospheric on the dancefloor. The flipside starts with some chopped up martial arts samples which merge into a dark and intense broken beat orgy. Last up is probably the straightest cut on here, solid kick and percussion with signature FM bass warbles pushing it along. Undoubtedly one of the strongest Counterbalance singles, this sold masses on first release and every repress has sold out very quickly!

Review: Another Downwards nugget gets the re-release treatment. This time the classic "Playground Procedure" by Diversion Group (The Birmingham techno supergroup consisting of Regis, Surgeon and Female) has been completely re-cut and re-mastered from the original tapes to create a bigger, louder dancefloor beast. Trimming away the ambient interludes, and focusing on the beats means a louder more evil cut - maybe offending the Downwards purists in the process - but this record serves a different purpose for a different time. "All Boys / No Girls" is a driving groove that manages to sound dense and open at the same time - this will be heads down dancefloor action all the way. On the flip, "Shirts & Skins" is a kick 'n' stick 'n' blip theme for when the DJ needs to hold the pressure. Limited initial pressing, with the first 400 pressed on clear vinyl.

From the same era that spawned classics such as "Badger Bite" and "Magneze" come six more finely executed scenes of sheer naked aggression. Undoubtedly influenced by the second wave of the Motor City at the time, namely Jeff Mills and Robert Hood; these tracks are still undoubtedly Child's own. Still, credit where credit's due; "Spider", "Lash Lite" and "IT-2" wear the M-Plant influence firmly on their sleeve with their entrancing synth stabs and claps on the kick. "Hard" and "Zilla" follow the instruction book for relentlessly hard grooves heard on Mill's Waveform Transmissions series. Essential listening.

Review: The SRX label is a new endeavour from the increasingly shaggy bearded techno icon Surgeon, with six planned releases of his early, rare and unreleased works pooled from the original DAT tapes he rediscovered earlier this year. Working closely with long term mastering companion Christoph Grote-Beverborg of D&M Berlin, the series promises much on the basis of this inaugural edition which features material originally released back in 1994 as the Magneze 12? on Downwards. Newly titled the Surgeon EP, all four tracks naturally resonate with the sort of powerful loop based techno Downwards were pioneering at this time and expect to hear them in your dark basement of choice over the coming months ("Atol" is a particular highlight). Extra praise to NYC-based Common Name agency for the sublime sleeve design on these too.

Review: It is some 19 years since Surgeon dropped Pet 2000, arguably the most successful of his early forays into rambunctious, hard-wound techno. Here, it gets a reissue in newly remastered form as part of Surgeon's series of SRX releases. Despite its vintage, the EP still bristles with raw energy, a facet that makes it sound particularly relevant right now. Opener "Badger Bite" is typically uncompromising, with looped steel drum melodies and pulverizing rhythms being whipped into a dense, dancefloor frenzy. If anything, the kick drums and distorted stabs on "Electric Chicken" are even more intense, a feeling exaggerated by Surgeon's full-throttle production. There's a little relief in the shape of "Reptile Mess", which sounds positively dystopian in its freakish combination of undulating bass, cymbal-heavy percussion and psychedelic electronics.
