Review: Fresh from the first two successful singles of his solo career, Billy Idol was one of the most recognisable faces in the early 80s, with his popularity rising in tandem with the rise of the music video thanks to MTV. The follow up album to his eponymous debut, Rebel Yell would prove to be his most successful and the most critically acclaimed of his career, with hits coming out of its ears. 'Eyes Without A Face', 'Flesh For Fantasy', 'Catch My Fall' and the title track 'Rebel Yell' all helped to make one of the highest selling records of 1982, making Billy a household name. Musically, Rebel Yell is a new wave album with hard rock and other influences. Steve Stevens powerful guitar riffs that helped fuel Billy Idol's singing were a match made in heaven. Review: J Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive will likely go down in history as one of 2010s hip-hop's most emotive albums. Through various forces, we'd contend it found itself on the iPods of anyone so much as remotely interested in exploring hip-hop beyond the pales of Kendrick Lamar, Drake or Eminem. It put Cole on the map for many young listeners: the virginity-loss classic 'Love Yourz' is the obvious go-to hit, but it doesn't represent the rest of the album, which mostly falls into the category of gushing and nostalgic. '03 Adolescence' and 'Apparently' are our highlights, with Cole indulging emotive jazz-piano interludes and pop-rap production tropes, with his rhymes always circling back to the album's core subject matters: home, childhood, wrong paths, memories.

Review: Named after dazzle camouflage, an approach to painting naval vessels in ways that would make it difficult for them to be targeted with the naked eye (used extensively in World War I, less so in World War II), OMD's fourth studio album also arrived on Telegraph, an imprint that never existed and was instead a fictitious platform backed by Virgin Records. There's no mistaking the fact this is Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, though, with the tracks here defining the band perfectly.
By that, we mean grand, epic overtures, a strange - at the time, groundbreaking - hybrid of electronic synth stuff with classical, Neo-operatics and rock & roll. It's evocative, immediately captivating and very difficult to make many assumptions about, with techniques such as sampling, looping and layering employed to incredible effect, without overshadowing the song craft itself. Which, it's safe to say, is approaching their artistic peak at this point.

Review: The second studio album from Yello was added to the pantheons of weirdo electronic pop some time ago. In fact, some 31 years ago to be exact. While not by any stretch the outfit's most famous effort, that belongs to fourth album, Stella, and in particular the 1980s movie anthem 'Oh Yeah', in many ways that track doesn't encapsulate the spirit of the band anything like the tunes here.
At times low slung ('Ballet Mecanique') and occupying a space somewhere between roots and fairground, in other moments tragically epic and approaching New Romanticism ('Quad El Habib'), while the music itself is wildly varied and unarguably original, the overall magic is still found in how much fun it sounds like they were having, and how much fun we have hearing it.

Review: Given that the concept of the 12" version was born during the mid-to-late 1970s, it seems fitting that this four-disc trawl through extended mixes of the era leans heavily on classic disco cuts. Of course, there are some genuine must-haves among the DJ-friendly disco extensions on offer, not least Elton John's Philly Soul anthem 'Are You Ready For Love', Cerrone's 'Supernature', Dan Hartman's 'Relight My Fire' and Diana Ross's epic 'Love Hangover'. Review: The 1982 glam-rock swan song for British rock group Roxy Music sees another limited reissue, a departure from the more edgy and abrasive sounds the group went for prior. The word that people constantly use to describe 'Avalon' is mature, in multiple senses of the word. At its core, the record is sensual and seductive make-out material, a 10 track package pining on romance named after the fantastical romantic gesture of King Arthur's body being sent to the titular island. It's plain to see why 'Avalon' is the band's most acclaimed and influential project, spawning off other New Wave acts like Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and Tears for Fears. Review: Remastered at Abbey Road studios, 'Flesh & Blood' saw the first studio album made after the departure of drummer Paul Thompson. With his absence, the British rock group moved to a more accessible and palatable sound that paid off, earning the group their first No.1 Album since 1973 with 'Stranded'. The tone of Brian Ferry's vocal is of melancholy and depression, of unrequited love with a woman who ultimately can't stand the sight of him. Review: Is Wendy Carlos one of the most underrated and overlooked of the female synth pioneers? It probably depends who you ask, with the die hard archivists no doubt ready to stand up and scream "who doesn't remember, respect, and revere her?" Review: It was big news when Daft Punk were enlisted to record the soundtrack to Disney's remake of Tron. While the film has perhaps faded from view slightly, the soundtrack remains a popular notch in the French duo's latter-day legacy. Here, we get treated to a reissue of the big budget remix collection which came out in 2011. It's a neat snapshot of the electronic music landscape at the time, ranging from The Glitch Mob to M83, Moby to Paul Oakenfold, Boys Noize to Photek and the late, great Avicii. You certainly wouldn't get the same cast of characters together for a similar package now, making this a document of the era as well as an essential collection of premier league dance music.

Review: Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, John Cale, Doug Yule, Maureen Tucker and - a little later - Nico broke the mould with their efforts as The Velvet Underground. The Andy Warhol-managed and produced cult rock icons helped lay the foundations for New Wave and punk about a decade before either sound really started to make inroads in any circles, let alone commercial ones. And, listening back to any of their records now, the music itself isn't just a significant bookmark theoretically: it all still sounds incredible today.
Todd Haynes' highly recommendable documentary charts at least some of that story in a commendable way, more so when you consider it arrived around 50 years after the original lineup disbanded. Using interviews with surviving members Cale and Tucker, alongside archive footage, music and other material, it paints a vivid portrait of an equally vivid band. With tracks by them in question, Bo Diddley, The Primitives and The Diablos, this OST helps colour that picture, and era, properly.

Review: It's hard to tell whether The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other is the most reassuring or disappointing moment in the history of Van der Graaf Generator. The progressive rock outfit that came out of Manchester University in the mid-late-1960s have been going, in some form or another, for 55 years. And yet here we are, in 2022, discussing this, the only UK Top 50 album they ever released.
The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other was also their first LP released in Britain, which speaks volumes about how unfair music can be. Despite the obvious visibility issues of a band that continue to pass many by, it's safe to say critics have always been pretty blown away by the VDGG, and no more so than on this outing. At times its unsettling, in other moments joyous, it packs so much personality you can't help but get to know the players intimately on first listen.

Review: If you're not a Blink 182 fan the fact the American pop punk rockers put out a Greatest Hits album in 2005 might be quite surprising considering they only rose to international chart repute at the turn of the century. Review: It seems fitting that the Temptations are marking an astonishing 60 years in the business with a new album whose most impactful track, 'When We Were Kings', is a gorgeously nostalgic, loved-up telling of their own history. It's fitting, too, that the set is largely classic in sound (the hip-hop soul style opener excepted), mixing elements of 1960s, '70s. '80s and '90s soul, and that the now octogenarian group are still capable of belting out vocals as sweetly and soulfully as they did back in the day. There are plenty of other nods to their lengthy history dotted across the album, too, including a song recorded with Motown contemporary Smokey Robinson and an updated version of 'Come On', a song some of their members first recorded way back in 1959.
