Review: Following forays into the worlds of pop, dance and "groove", the popular 12"/80s series dons black mascara and delves into the world of alternative 80s pop. As with previous instalments, there's a veritable mix of classics, forgotten gems and so-so mixes spread over three CDs packed with Goth, synth-pop and new wave tracks. As ever, there are some much-owned (but nevertheless essential) cuts - "Blue Monday", "Bela Lugosi's Dead", "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" etc - as well as lesser-known delights from the likes of Cabaret Voltaire (the superb "Yashar"), Furniture, The Psychedelic Furs (the stuttering, edit-happy New York remix of "My Heart") and the Sisters of Mercy (a 10-minute version of Goth standard "Lucretia My Reflection").

Review: Despite the cutting-edge nature of her much-lauded Slave To The Rhythm set, 1981's Nightclubbing remains Grace Jones' finest hour. Recorded at Compass Point studios in Nassau with the help of Sly and Robbie, it saw the New York icon embracing her Jamaican roots, delivering near horizontal Balearic pop shot through with dub rhythms and occasional blasts of dubwise disco ("Pull Up To The Bumper"). This deluxe reissue presents the original album in remastered form, alongside a second disc featuring essential alternative versions. These include excellent 12" versions of "Feel Up" and "Use Me", plus various (uncredited) Larry Levan remixes of "Pull Up To The Bumper". If this isn't in your collection already, it should be.

Tata Vega - "Get It Up For Your Love" (John Morales M+M instrumental mix)
Val Young - "If You Should Ever Be Lonely" (John Morales M+M instrumental mix)
Review: Legendary producer, groove craftsman and one half of the agenda-setting M&M production outfit, anything from Morales is bona fide disco dynamite and likely to have been sought after for at least 25 years. This celebration of Motown's leading ladies is certainly no exception... Teena Marie's "I Need Your Lovin" enjoys both a stately extension and an equally lavish instrumental, Ross's "Boss" gets a full instrumental construction that's as immersive as it is glistening and Tata Vega's "Get It Up For Your Love" goes back to the original stems for a rebuild that allows us to acquaint ourselves with each and every precision played instrument. Finally we jet right into the mid '80s for Val Young's soft-rock-tinged "If You Should Ever Be Lonely". If you're not leaping around in camp histrionics to the thundering bassline and sizzling guitar twangs, you've got it at the wrong speed. Serious Morales gold.

Review: Originally issued back in 1998, Mezzanine remains the most commercially successful album released by Bristol troupe Massive Attack, thanks in no small part to the Liz Fraser-featuring "Teardrop". This third album signalled a change in sonic direction that played more explicitly on the darkness and tension that was always an undercurrent of their much loved debut Blue Lines and successor Protection. After numerous bootlegs over the years, Virgin have done the right thing and presented this official reissue of Mezzanine to appease fans of Massive Attack and it's clear the LP has lost none of it's bewitching power. The Quincy Jones and Isaac Hayes sampling "Exhange" and "Exchange" remain a delight in particular.

What's It Gonna Be (2:12)
Spooky (2:43)
Review: A tale of two Dusty Springfield's on this special RSD 7". "What's It Going To Be" is a straight up, sweaty and stompy northern soul classic while the heavily-sampled "Spooky" explores Springfield's more sultry, purring, sexual side. But then you probably knew that already. Two classic Dusty jams, one excellent RSD special; only 1000 of these 45s have been pressed. You know what to do.

Both still as stunning as the day they were the day they were released, grab your copy now before Robin Thicke cops them all.

Review: Cruising the slipstream of Black Messiah, D'Angelo's debut album gets a timely reissue 20 years after its release. The neo-soul foundations dig deep with every nuance and subtlety D'Angelo has become known for; the Gaye-level harmonies of "Crusin'", the jazz meanders of "Sh*t Damn Motherf*ker" and the unstoppably sexual drive of "Lady"... If this isn't in your collection already, now is most definitely the time.

Gwen Guthrie - "Seventh Heaven" (Levan mix) (7:24)
Review: A limit vinyl edition version of the recent 22-track album for Record Store Day: nine of Larry's finest extensions represent his creative breadth, studio ingenuity and real nose for the dancefloor and nascent mixing culture. From the dynamic, slinky almost cat-like treatment of Man Friday's "Love Honey, Love Heartache" to the big dubby reverbs, cosmic textures and carnal percussion on David Joseph's "You Can't Hide (Your Love From Me)" by way of the restrained, teasing playfulness of his take on Grace Jones, Levan's full vision, influence and innovation is celebrated beautifully. There are few cases when the word genius can literally be applied, but in Larry's case it really can.

Review: Remarkably, two decades have now passed since the release of Endtroducing, DJ Shadow's peerless debut album. In way of celebration, Island has put together this expansive, three-disc "Endtrospective" edition. The original album - an atmospheric and hugely entertaining exploration of trip-hop, break-digging and the potential of sampling - still sounds unfeasibly brilliant all these years on. It's joined by two discs of bonus material; a first, containing previously released demos and live versions, and a second with all-new remixes from contemporary producers. There's plenty to get the pulse racing here, including a John Carpenter-influenced ambient rework of "Transmissions" by Kuedo, DJ Spinn's footwork-goes-jazz remix of "What Does Your Soul Look Like", and a sparkling Hudson Mohawke version of "Midnight In A Perfect World".

Review: Considered not only one of his finest albums but also one of pop music's landmark recordings, Marvin Gaye's 1971 LP What's Goin' On received a reissue in a Deluxe Edition (half speed remastered) in 2011 with 28 additional tracks. It of course contains the well known title track, the follow-up single, "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" plus the third and final single "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)". In its entirety, it is an incredibly touching album, telling the story of a war veteran (inspired by his own brother Frankie) returning home to the country he fought for and sadly having to bare witness to a world of prejudice, poverty, drug abuse and police brutality. Songs were co-written by legends Al Cleveland and Obie Benson and recorded in Detroit at Motown's Hitsville, Golden World and United Sound Studios.

Review: By the time he was asked to compose the music for Blaxploitation movie Shaft, Isaac Hayes had already established himself as a talent on the rise. While he'd enjoyed modest success as a session musician, producer and vocalist, it would be his score for Shaft - a triumphant blend of dancefloor-friendly funk and soul, evocative downtempo moments, sweeping orchestration and rich, intricately composed musicality - that would turn Hayes into an internationally recognized star. 45 years after it was first recorded, Shaft still sounds superb, as this weighty double vinyl reissue - complete with MP3 download code - neatly proves. If it's not in your record collection already, it should be.

Review: Five years after their inaugural Motown compendium, UMC jump aboard the RSD Express with a sophomore set comprising 19 stone cold soul gems. While it features a number of evergreen classics ("Machine Gun" anyone?) there's a strong theme of less obvious tracks from some of Motown's myriad legends. Highlights splashed across these delicious yellow 12s include Kendricks' glock-busting "Keep On Trucking", Stevie's yearning, driving 1967 b-side "Every Time I See You I Go Wild", Puzzle's immense jazz dream-piece "Haiku" and a whole load more.

Review: Two decades have passed since Massive Attack signaled a new stage in their career with the dark, paranoid and claustrophobic brilliance of "Mezzanine", their third studio album. Given the current global political climate, it arguably sounds even more relevant 20 years after it first hit stores. This time round, the re-mastered original set comes accompanied by something none of us have heard before: Mad Professor's complete dub translation, which was slated for release around the turn of the Millennium but for one reason or another never came out. Like his take on "No Protection", it's an inspired set of revisions that takes 3D and Daddy G's dense and red-eyed originals into wild new bass-heavy places. Even if you own the original version already, it's well worth picking up this special edition just for that alone.

Review: Although the titular track might have been somewhat spoiled by a certain TV advert, the rest of Gregory Isaacs' most well known album still stands up. Lazy reggae rhythms are permeated by sparkly synth work from Wally Badarou, which at the time was a brave and progressive move away from traditional reggae and toward the ensuing sound of dancehall. Isaac's own buttery, laid back musings are front and centre, crystal clear and delicate throughout, always complimented by dainty piano chords that sink you deep into a dreamworld. The production throughout is first class, too, making this a true classic.

Review: Way back in 1998 when Massive Attack's career-defining "Mezzanine" was first released, legendary dub technician Mad Professor cooked up some radical reworking. They now get their first official release alongside dubs of two tracks that never actually made it onto the album - Metal Banshee: a dub version of "Superpredators" which was a cover of Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Metal Postcard", and "Wire", which was actually recorded for the film "Welcome to Sarajevo". Wild effects, plenty of knob twiddling and oodles of reverb define this freaky late night collection and mark another essential release in the catalogue of the already legendary Mad Professor.

His own Grammy Award winning band The Roots brought thrilling musicianship and live instrumentation to the hip hop game and are widely regarded as one of the best live acts in the genre. Their fourth album, Things Fall Apart, was their real breakthrough and is now presented here, remastered, with bonus tracks, rare photos, essays from Black Thought and Questlove and liner notes from Questlove. Review: Root Down is an experimental album from 1994 when The Beastie Boys locked themselves in a rehearsal space and went to town on studio experimentation and live jamming. It came between "Paul's Boutique" and "Check Your Head" and resulted in two previously unreleased versions of the title track and snippets of music recorded while on tour in Europe. There is the typical Beastie Boys mix of floor rocking riffs but with funky new flows stitched in and thus charts the period in which the band went from their post punk guitar roots to a more new-groove driven sound.

Tangerine Dream At Coventry Cathedral
Signale Aus Der Schwabischen Strasse
Review: Given the sheer volume of material made and released by kosmiche and krautrock pioneers Tangerine Dream throughout their career, it's perhaps fitting that this staggeringly epic box contains well over 24 hours of music. It focuses on the synthesizer-wielding German band's pioneering period in the 1970s, combining re-mastered versions of seven studio albums (some with additional 5.1 surround sound mixes by Steven Wilson) with no less than eight discs of previously unreleased material. This includes outtakes, unheard tracks, alternate versions, multiple recordings of legendary live shows and the band's near-mythical "Oedipus Tyrannus" soundtrack - something that will delight fans if Tangerine Dream forums are anything to go by. If that's not enough to set the pulse racing, the box also boasts a heavy hardback book and two Blu-Ray discs.

Review: First things first: the world has come a long way in its attitude to women since this album was first released, so in 2019, 2001 sounds - at least lyrically - wrong on many levels. But it is also still very right when it comes to g-funk, west coast rap and second wave hip hop sounds. Listening to it from start to finish is to spend 90 minutes as a fly on the wall of the lives of Snoop, Dre, Eminem and all the rest of the high profile guests. Jam packed with classics and gold standards, this is an album of its time but one that was never bettered.

Review: Wow, 20 years has gone by since Eminem changed the game with his "Slim Shady" LP. To mark the occasion, this anniversary edition is freshly expanded with 10 bonus tracks that include rarities, a cappella versions, freestyles and instrumentals. It was the iconic rapper's major debut that didn't dampen down his raw spirit and attitude. Anthems like "My Name Is" still bang, "97' Bonnie & Clyde" finds him at his vengeful and most bile-filled best and just about everything else confirms his reputation as one of the most pointed and dangerous lyricists in the game.

Review: When he released third album "Me Against The World" in 1995, Tupac Shakur was arguably the biggest name in hip-hop. As we now know, it wouldn't last, with the LA rapper losing his life in a drive-by shooting 12 months later. As tragic as his demise was, his music still resonates and this album - here reissued to celebrate its 25th anniversary - is arguably the best of the lot. Produced by an all-star cast of beat-makers (Brian G, Easy Mo Bee, Tony Pizarro and Moe ZMD included), the set offered a glossy and polished take on the then dominant gangster rap style while including numerous nods to R&B, swing and G-funk. If you don't already own a copy, grab one of these pronto.

Review: Tangerine Dream's sequencer-driven work may not feel quite so groundbreaking today, although it certainly has aged incredibly well. But you should take Phaedra, the first album entry in the band's back catalogue to fully realise that idea, as proof of the fact it was. Released in 1974, it's amazingly hard to distinguish between the opening title track and the synth arpeggiation you find in techno or ambient today, setting the bar for what is to follow.

In many ways you can trace so much of the last 30 years of dance music back to this era, if not this specific album, albeit it was light years ahead of its time. Perhaps what's most remarkable, though, is that far from crude noises that have since been refined for the more mainstream electronic world, much of what's here stands up to contemporary electronica in an exploratory, genre-melding, sound-art way. Basically, it's essential.

Review: Beastie Boys Music is a new greatest hits compilation album that serves as a companion to 2020's Spike Jonze-directed Beastie Boys Story and 256-page photo book, Beastie Boys Book. The double vinyl affair takes in 20 classic tracks that span the iconic group's more than 30 year career, with the biggest of the big such as 'No Sleep', 'Sabotage' and 'Intergalactic' all making the cut. By now these are well worn classics, but their impact on rap cannot be overstated, and the tunes still get any party banging thanks to the immediacy of the beats and sharpness of the rhymes.

Review: Record Store Day 2020 seems to have gone on for months, and months, and months. Roxy Music fans won't be complaining though as one of the many million special releases is this, the final piece of the Roxy Music debut album celebration jigsaw. Steven Wilson's stereo mix of the fabled original album was meant to come out as part of 2018's huge box set and has been much debated online ever since. Now, after the band have given it their full blessing, it finally arrives on strictly limited clear wax, and has been specially mastered for vinyl by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios.

Review: Tangerine Dream has always been one of electronic music's most prolific acts. Even so, it still seems crazy that this vast box set - the latest in an ongoing series profiling their work for Virgin Records - only focuses on four years of their lengthy, ongoing career. As you'd expect, it boasts freshly re-mastered versions of six albums initially released between 180 and '83 (Tangram, Thief, Exit, White Eagle, Logos and Hyperborea), plus previously unreleased soundtracks to two movies (The Soldier and The Keeper), a swathe of unreleased concert recordings and various bonus tracks. It's an absolute treat for fans of the synthesizer-driven krautrockers, with the accompanying hardback book providing plenty to read and look at while you work your way through almost half a day's worth of music.

Review: The longest Record Store Day in the history of Record Store Day continues to turn out nuggets of gold with this seventh soundtrack album by British singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Knopfler. He recorded it for the 1997 film Metroland, directed by Philip Saville, and did a fine job of heightening the mood of each scene while capturing the personalities of the main characters. Jazz and rock both feature with a lush bit of chanson in amongst the mostly instrumental cuts. There are playful and funky cuts, throwback rag time ditties and plenty of great dynamics on show to really manipulate your emotions as it plays out.

Review: Canadian singer The Weeknd has just been announced as the half time act for this year's Super Bowl, which is another crowning glory for an artist who has made a remarkable rise to the top. One of his early standout achievements was his Beauty Behind The Madness album, which is re-released here on its fifth anniversary. It was his sophomore long player and feature big guest like Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Ray which helped it debut at number one in several countries around the world. Filled with some harder truths than previous music yet with plenty of catchy hooks and singalong choruses, it prove The Weeknd was more versatile than people thought.

Review: Brian Eno is celebrated for lots of reasons - his pioneering ambient work, his role as a producer-for-hire on some landmark records by other people - but previously his role as a soundtrack composer is not one of them. This is slightly odd, because Eno has provided music for countless films and television shows over the last four-and-a-bit decades, as this excellent retrospective of soundtrack highlights proves. Kicking off with his creepy, chiming theme from Channel 4's Top Boy, the album moves between experimental soundscapes ('Blood Red, from a BBC documentary on Francis Bacon), swelling and quietly symphonic synthesizer sounds ('Decline and Fall', an intergalactic-sounding piece from the Dune soundtrack), languid Americana ('Beach Sequence', from his Passengers project), and the kind of lucid ambient compositions Eno probably knocks out in his sleep.

Review: It has been a bumper year for any PJ Harvey fans somehow still missing her classic records from their collection, with the 20 year anniversary of Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea catalysing a slew of re-releases. This is probably one of the most important, her debut collaboration with fellow English alt-rocker John Parrish - a truly seminal recording.

At the time it was such a meeting of minds it's often difficult to know where one artist starts and the other stops, they're so musically in tune. It might be grubbily rolling around in grungy operatics ('Urn With Dead Flowers In A Drained Pool'), dominated by a weirdly uplifting, shrill blues discordance ('Rope Bridge Crossing'), or feel like a funeral service for lo-fi keyboardists ('Is That All There Is'). Either way, it was all incredibly different and is all still genuinely incredible.

Review: New albums from Aussie fusionists the Avalanches don't come around that often, so the appearance of We Will Always Love you four years after its predecessor, Wildflower, is genuinely big news (it previously took them 16 years to record the follow-up to their acclaimed 2000 debut, Since I Left You). Somewhat predictably, they've hit the mark once more, supplementing their usual dense sample collages and multi-coloured, genre-bending compositions (a little psychedelia, Balearica and synth-pop here, a dash of dream pop, future R&B and synth-pop there) with vocals and musical contributions from a dizzying cast-list of like-minded guests (think Neneh Cherry, Johnny Marr, Jamie XX, Blood Orange, Tricky, Cornelius and Kelly Moran). Hard to pin down but royally entertaining from start to finish, We Will Always Love You is a triumph.

Review: Back when Paul McCartney fist left The Beatles he has said he was rather lost and in a depressive state. He decided to set up and record a lo-fi album at home where he played all the instruments. That was McCartney I. McCartney II followed with a similar set up and earlier this year once the coronavirus pandemic hit he decided to repeat the trick a third time. He plays all the guitars and drums himself, with just one mic set up in the room. If he didn't like what he heard, he moved the mic and played bits again. The results is a varied album that covers plenty of ground with all the skilful songwriting you would expect.

Review: Fans of Polly Jean Harvey have been spoiled of late, with the West Country singer-songwriter not only offering up remastered and expanded editions of many of her solo albums, but also partner albums of previously unheard demo recordings. The latest set to get this treatment is 2000's Mercury Music Prize-winning Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, an album that many critics believe is the lauded artist's greatest single work. This 'demo' version is as stripped back and impactful as you'd expect, with Harvey, accompanied by little more than an acoustic or electric guitar, delivering pleasingly sparse, stripped-back versions of now-familiar songs. Presented in 'in progress' form like this, the quality of Harvey's songs - and her lyrics in particular - really shines through.

Review: It has been said before that Polly Jean Harvey's 1998 album, Is This Desire, marked a watershed moment in her career. A veritable coming of age record that failed to match the commercial heights of To Bring You My Love, but was actually a far more complete and personal thing. Less angry than preceding efforts, it painted a more balanced and accurate portrait of an artist whose formative years were pockmarked with media analysis and criticism of her visible powerful attributes - sexuality and fury.

Coupled with the fact that Harvey has never been one to pander to scenes in the hope of top ten chart success, and you can only imagine how happy she was with the finished product. And all this is before we start banging on about the musicality, from title track's subtle, hushed baritone blues to the garage rock-out of 'A Perfect Day Elise'.

Review: Over the last 12 months, Polly Jean Harvey has delivered remastered versions of many of her most acclaimed albums, while also releasing collections of demo recordings for each set. The latest to get this treatment is her critically acclaimed set Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Famously, most of the songs focus on love and relationships and were written while Harvey was living in New York City at the tail end of the '90s. As with her other collections of demos, most of the early versions showcased here feature little more than Harvey on guitar and lone or multi-tracked vocals. This raw and stripped-back approach gives new life to some songs, with highlights including the heart-aching 'The Mess We're In' and fuzz-soaked 'This Is Love'.

On the occasion of its 30th anniversary it gets a special deluxe reissue treatment with audio taken from the original sessions. The new collection features no fewer than five unreleased songs including 'Charming Mess' and some special studio recording covers of Humble Pie's '30 Days In The Hole' and John Lennon's 'Jealous Guy.' Famously, most of the songs focus on love and relationships and were written while Harvey was living in New York City at the tail end of the '90s. It remains a fine album that has stood the test of time well, with highlights including soaring opener 'Big Exit', jangling sing-along 'A Place Called Home', the sparse and haunting 'Beautiful Feeling' and full-throttle, grunge-inspired rocker 'Kamikaze'.

Review: RECOMMENDED
While everyone alive with working ears in the 1990s can remember the first time they heard 'Papua New Guinea', on the whole the work included on this, FSOL's second album, doesn't quite strike the same chords with non-obsessives. Nevertheless, give the LP one play and you'll realise this is seminal British rave on record, and arguably the finest moment in Garry Cobain (no relation to Kurt) and Brian Dougans' careers.

Which isn't to dismiss what came before or what would follow, more to say there's a reason why this is considered a landmark release by those in the know. Kissing frenetic breaks and chaotic sampling goodbye, Dead Cities ushered a new wave of lush tranquility into the band's formula, in turn helping establish a blueprint for the deep progressive tones that would come to dominate dance culture by the end of the 1990s. Now on vinyl for the first time, it's an essential investment.

The Race (live In Berlin 2016)
Review: Last year marked four decades since Boris Blank and Dieter Meier released their first album as Yello, alongside then third member Carlos Peron. To celebrate the milestone, they've decided to offer up this exhaustive but - given the length of their career - surprisingly tight retrospective. CD one chronicles their career highlights from the first two decades of their career, when they enjoyed their biggest chart hits (see 'Oh Yeah') and were renowned for an eccentric form of synth-pop that relied heavily on unusual samples and off-kilter rhythms. Disc two looks at their second 20 years, offering up a similarly odd but inspired mixture of eccentric pop and dancefloor electronica. Fittingly, it finishes with a rousing 2016 live version of 'The Race', another of their brilliant 1980s singles.

Review: You can easily understand why Yello could rue the day they finished the seminal track 'Oh Yeah'. A bumbling and eccentric synth pop workout that almost sounds like someone got their first Casio keyboard and started playing something with all the weird and wonderful noises stored in its limited memory banks, while the track itself should have been destined for obscurity successive Hollywood movies of the 1980s had different ideas.

Hence the tune is etched into the common conscious. What many people don't realise, though, is how much of a flash in the pan Yello weren't, and how that track is just one moment in a relentlessly adventurous 40 year career. Hence this collection looking to showcase everything else that happened. Some of which, perhaps surprisingly, could be seen as paving the way for the likes of Alabama 3. Don't worry, though, 'Oh Yeah' is on here, too.

Review: Polly Jean Harvey's reissue series continues via a new edition of 2004 set Uh Huh Her, one of the alternative rock icon's most fuzzy and lo-fi sets. The album's distinctive sound, which eschewed studio trickery in favour of a stripped-back range of instruments and home recording techniques, was a deliberate choice, but one that divided critics at the time. All these years on, the album still sounds raw and fresh, with Harvey's distinctive lyrics and vocal delivery rising above her own lo-fi musical backing (she played almost all the instruments herself) and long-time collaborator Rob Ellis' unfussy drums. Highlights include 'Shame', the riotous 'Who The Fuck', the sparse and surprisingly electronic 'The Slow Drug' and the growling, post-punk-goes-alt-rock flavour of 'It's You'.

Review: After marking her "in session" debut on John Peel's Radio 1 show as a virtual unknown in 1991, PJ Harvey became a semi-regular fixture at the BBC's Maida Vale studios during the final years of the legendary DJ's life. The Peel Sessions 1991-2004 doesn't exactly reflect this - it is, after all, a selection of recordings rather than Harvey's entire Peel Session archive- but it does give a snapshot of the West Country indie-rocker at her distinctive best. The plentiful highlights include an alternately low-slung and bluesy take on 'Victory', an increasingly breathless 1993 cover of Willie Dixon's 'Wang Dang Doodle', a dense and fuzzy version of 'This Wicked Tongue' from 2000, and Harvey's emotive, folksy rendition of 'You Come Through' from the 2004 John Peel tribute concert.
