Review: Now-Again Records presents Carolina Funk: First In Funk 1968-1977. The fourth CD in the UK-based Jazzman Records series that produced the landmark Midwest, Texas, and most recently, Florida Funk compilations. For this instalment we’ve moved up the Atlantic coast to look at the vibrant and original scene in the two rural states of North and South Carolina. Curated largely by resident North Carolina researcher and collector Jason Perlmutter, Carolina Funk presents 22 of the best, rarest and most sought-after heavy funk songs ever recorded, with break-beats to spare. Without any large urban centres much of the musical output of the Carolinas has been limited to single towns, with bands and their records seldom venturing further than the state line. From inspired percussive instrumentals to heartfelt slabs of soul; from rediscovered tapes in the garages of retired musicians to funk 45s so raw that they were blessed by James Brown himself, this is Carolina Funk.

Puff Rider
Review: The Fire Records/Various Production partnership in dark mash-up continues on from VP's dark-as-a-haunted-cave remix of Gerry Mitchell
and Little Sparta's 'Feasting On My Heart', and their remix of labelmates, Puerto Muerto's 'Boy' ("shocking in its scope"- Boomkat).
This time around is more upbeat (relatively speaking), as evident in Bonesy's more playfully disturbing cover. Sonically, it's nasty rather than
dark; it's a stormer of electro-popping stomp warped by Dave Cloud's characteristic breathy and gravelly vocals and attitude.
The lo-fi original on the b-side (from last year's 'Napoleon Of Temperance') is a distorted disco classic karaoked by a loose-screw genius,
and is a favourite of Stool Pigeon DJs.

Review: "Breakwind" is the debut release for Lee Douglass (aka Douglas Sound) on the Wurst Edits label, and what a release it is! The a-side's "Do Right" goes straight for the jugular with a heavy disco stomp, killer flute line and heart wrenching soulful vocals by Teddy Pendergrass. Flip for the equally brilliant "Breakwind", an epic mission kicking off with punk funk vibes and low slung bass with some dizzying atmospherics that all morph together to create a tech edged sinister vibe.

Review: "People" is synthesized electro-funk at it's best, taking us back to the experimental synth pop sound of Kraftwerk. It merges driving electronic percussion and basslines with a catchy synthesized melody. Berkson's brilliant production injects a nice dose of funk into the mix, similar to the breakbeat/hip-hop genius of Afrika bambaataa, to create a well rounded piece of electronic music.

Review: A very mysterious release from Berlin, produced by Torsten Pröfrock of the Hardwax crew. Along with Robert Henke, Torsten is one half of the infamous Monolake production team. The sound is deep, textured and rich. Two tracks that will appeal greatly to fans of Deep Chord and Basic Channel etc, but it has that little something extra, pushing it a little bit further. It's very good and is one of those that will be remembered for years to come. If ever the term "future classic" was apt, that time is now. Recommended.

It's Alright
Review: A straight ahead house-funking EP with the main track sampling an infamous Mood II Swing bit from way back. Deep, jacking, underground bump and energetic builds make the lead track an absolute party rocker. Also featured is the filtered soundscape, funky bassline, guitar and horns of "How I Feel", a serious party jam. Chuck Love does a remix on "Learn to Love" that takes it a bit deeper and almost disco. Last but not least is "It's Alright", a little more abstract but still another house rocker with sound effects and percussion loops to drive the dancefloor.

Review: A three track EP from Bristol based producer Nightwalker, aka Sound Box Productions. Nightwalker's sound is pure, bass-heavy madness that mixes up a fusion of styles including grime, electronica and dubstep. "Magic Beans" features a jump-up bass that sits awkwardly on wild beats, but before getting too comfortable the track breaks down into a sublime piano hook and then builds into another bassline assault. "Spakture" has solid beats, a low-end attack and spaced-out effects while "Wartorn" is a classical gutter substep that submerges you into the middle of a low-end war.

So Free (Jovonn Soulmoov vocal mix)
So Free (Jovonn Soulmoov instrumental mix)
Review: If you've been looking for a serious song to drop during your set, a song that peels heads off the wall and has them working up a sweat, then this is the song that's gonna do it. If you thought the original was dope wait until you hear theses remixes. Jovonn comes with his classic underground raw sound that is a must to play at 3am. Louis Benedetti decided to switch it up on your ass with his mix and bring back that Chicago acid house sound!

Review: The great debut album by Mr Weinberg. Here are Detroit inspired techno tracks which can be compared to the works of Carl Craig, B12, Kenny Larkin, Duplex and Convextion. A superb present from Arne.

Ain't Afraid To Beg
Review: Runaway's "Shadows" on Wurst Edits is a driving little ditty chock full of killer congas, squelchy bass and some downright soul-wrenching vox straight out of Motown.

Review: "This Is My Home" is the stunning debut from New Zealand-born, Melbourne-based producer Lanu (aka Lance Ferguson). Brimming with future soul and broken beat flavours, forward-thinking production and intuitive jazz sensibility, this long player marks a distinct departure from the raw, deep funk sound of Ferguson's other project, The Bamboos.

To Know You Is To Love You
To Know You Is To Dub You
Review: Discovering that someone has edited an all time classic can often fill you with dread, but anyone who's aware of the Bloodfire track record need not worry as they seem to have come up trumps again. This outing takes on the Syreeta classic "To Know You Is To Love You". They have added a kick (gasp!) making it more dancefloor friendly, but even this is added with a subtlety that others in this field could learn from. The dub takes us in another dancefloor direction altogether and you would hardly recognise the original in this. Nice work.
