Even After All (Suckaside remix)
Gorilla Witness
Review: Since 2021, Suckaside - aka. ghetto-funk superstar B-side and funky DJ Sucka Timmy - have been prolific in their steady but healthy stream of releases in the realm of bespoke beats, centring on hip-hop, breakbeat and funk edits. Though mostly a digital affair, at least four vinyl records from the outfit have been released, and now this new one, 'Even After All', can be considered a part of that repertoire. Most prominently on this release comes a fresh fremix of the Finlay Quaye's 1997 hit 'Even After All', which was featured on his debut album Maverick A Strike.

Review: Volume 2 from the Jackin’ Disco crew promises to deliver something other than murder on the dancefloor despite the Sophie Ellis-Bextor flip; paring the disco pace back to a downer-tempo, albeit still delivering ample energy to fit on a single slice of 7” wax. The edit on the A-side is sourced from not from Bextor’s breakout disco-dance hit but rather her equally-as-good, classic feature cut ‘Groovejet’ by producer Spiller. On the B comes an equally loopy, happy-to-be-jacked bootleg of Carol Williams’ ‘Love Is You’.

Review: The Mountain 45 label has been giving us some unique music that cross genres since its inception just a few years ago. Like previous editions, Double A contributes 'Super Badman Riddim' which is both catchy and clever. Featuring James Brown samples thrown in the mix takes this dub related track to the limit of fun. For the B-side, James Nasty's 'Fan Dem Off' with a peak time party song that should take the dancefloor to another level. These attention getters are ideal for being addictively fun and different. It's hard to categorise music like this, which is a sign of its originality.

I Come Running Back
I'm Not Strong Enough
Review: Shotgun Records follow up recent successes reissuing the likes of Sam Dees, Eddie Floyd and Sir Ted Ford, and now re-press this in-demand number by Sandra Wright. 'I Come Running Back' is a favourite among soul fans, but this is the first time it has been issued as a single, one of nine tracks recorded with producer David Johnson at Broadway Sound in Muscle Shoals in 1974. Intended for an album project entitled The Wounded Woman, the masters were leased to Stax Records for a promised release, but only two singles were released on the Truth sublabel before Stax collapsed in bankruptcy in December 1975. It was only much later in 1989 that The Wounded Woman heard a full release, after which 'I Come Running Back' exploded in popularity, as it was always destined to do. The song is a blissful glitterer, brimming with bittersweet coming-of-age lessons of reconciliation and nostalgia.

Review: One of several new 7" soul classics to be reissued by the kind folks over at Shotgun Records, G.C. Cameron's suave, tux-clad classic 'Hold You To Your Promise' is a crisp, sweet-talking, and sultry shoe-shiner, which cleverly balances an ident of smoothness and sophistication with a topical rumination on Cameron's latest heartbreak and subsequent obsession. The penultimate track on Cameron's fifth album Give Me Your Love - his first to break from Motown for the Mississippi gospel/r&b maestros Malaco Records - the song is prime reissuing fodder for audiences inheriting Motown's sexier side.

Review: A reissue of 2022's covers single, Alvarius B's 'Karaoke' gets a second run via Unrock. A titan of the US underground singer-songwriter scene, Alan Bishop is best known as a co-founder of Sun City Girls and owner of the labels Abduction and Sublime Frequencies. His less-known alias Alvarius B has nonetheless seen an extended panhandle of releases at least since 1994, and plays host to a string of 'characters' and sub-pseudonyms. One such 'charakter', as he calls them, is Karaoke, whose forte is covers of noir cinematic rock classics. Here we've got two dark rundowns; on the A, a dark rundown of Ennie Morricone's 'Solo Nostalgia' from the film Comandamenti per un Gangster, and on the B, a version of Indonesia's finest Koes Plus' 'Tiba-Tiba Ku Menangis', whom Bishop had already interpreted as part of the band Koes Barat. Both detail Bishop's talent as a rarely-performed alter-ego, a cosmopolite solo-entertainer.

A-side cut 'Speaking In Tongues' was recorded at Les Ateliers Claus in September 2017, with additional mixing in 2021 from Adam Zidan. Both sessions capture a band unbound by rockist conventions, sometimes locking into a shapely groove and other times freewheeling through disjointed noise, as is the free improvisation way.

This second one is likely to follow suit. It comes from Able and is a dusty house cut with an old school feel thanks to the gentle breaks that power it along as a signature smoky soul vocal from Amy Winehouse brings plenty of emotion to a-side cut 'Winehouse Magic'. On the flip is 'Drake Punk' which pairs Daft Punk filter house loops with auto-tuned vocals all sure to bring some fun to the 'floor.

First, soul sensation Eli 'Paperboy' Reed tackles Ray Charles' 'You Don't Know Me.' Ubick sought someone to infuse soul into the song once sung by 'The Genius' himself, finding it in Reed, whose journey from Massachusetts to Mississippi's Delta shaped his soulful style. On Side B, Jr Thomas & The Volcanos bring their Rocksteady flair to Eddie Kendricks' 'If You Let Me,' paying homage to Jamaican legend Winston Riley. Night Owls' versions inject new life into these classics, ready to ignite the dance floor with their infectious grooves.

This one is a collab between ScruScru and an equally passionate digger from Cyprus known as Dwaal. Both tunes offer quite different looks but with great results. The first is the steamy and loose-limbed 'Destination? Funk!' with its squelchy bass and neat guitar riffs, while the flipside is a super deep and lush downtempo jam, 'Camelot Chill'. 'King Of My Castle' is a regnant lyrical musing, hearing a collaborative work with producer and multi-instrumentalist Bob Vito, and with additional vocals and percussion by the band Riciclette, for an impressive meditation on the nature of power and its perverse enjoyments. First produced in 1998 by Wamdue Project, this fresh reggae cover is best remembered as an era-definer, and this cover and Version extends the monarchy's rule by way of bubbling wahs, boxy fills, and owwing basses; simple, clean, effective instruments of force.

Review: Emotional Rescue takes another trip into the twisted world of post-punk dubs, electronics and oddities here at the hands of DJ, collector and radio host Gary The Tall. The original comes from German duo and new wave innovators Die Radierer whose pop-reggae jam 'Batman' is irresistibly catchy with its low-slung beats and lazy, sun-kissed melodies. It appeared on 1983's In Hollywood and was recorded at their home studio on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. Gary The Tall's remix finds him teaming up with Aaron Coyles under his new alias of Exotic Gardens and the results are loopy and dubbed out to perfection.

Never heard before on the tiny label, and with little background info out there to scour (we're pretty sure it's not the same Natural Life as the upbeat funk band active throughout the 1990s), all that's left is to use our ears. Both versions of the eponymous track are essentially an obverse and inverse of the same theme, except for the fact that one is funky in the fast, riveting sense; the other in the slower, sultrier sense. Both are nonetheless rapid, to-the-point heaters, and can be easily deployed and exploited in many a party - or afterparty - context.

On the A, 'Funky Feeling' impresses with its dynamic yet still crunchy bottling of the funk, with all its *je ne sais qoui* intact, and in which occasional Omar Santana-style cut-ups can be heard, to giggle-inducing effect. The B, meanwhile, brings us the 'Heat' and insists we 'feel' it, but we hardly need to be told, as we're willing partners in this dance; this track, like the one before it, places its kicks and snare-clap layers front and centre, retaining the central sample but encouraging an extra danceable flavour, not usually heard on original disco recordings.

Not to be outdone, Ice Cube covers the B-side with one of his most important solo tracks that established him after leaving NWA., 'Jackin For Beats'. Getting original copies of these on wax would cost a day's wage for most people. Like the label suggests, these are West Coast Classics and are blueprints for gangster rap.

Review: This 2024 edition marks the return of Joe Bataan, via the same track that made his name in 2004. Vampi Soul first welcomed the Latin Soul king to the label two decades back, facilitating the release of his 2005 album Call My Name. The pre-release singles for the album were 'Chick-A-Boom' and 'Cycles Of You', packed onto a single 7"; these quickly became DJs' favourites and have thus since remained long out of print. As it was twenty years ago, 'Chick-A-Boom' is a simultaneously upbeat but ghostly track, with Bataan's vocals quadrupling up in a wall of sound while providing the vibe equivalent of a Jackie Chan flick. 'Call My Name', meanwhile, goes heavy on the clavichord and synth whistle, as Bataan revels in a funereal theme, dancing, thundersticking into the great beyond.

Review: Greg Foat is a London-based keyboardist, composer, bandleader and DJ. Foat’s latest full-length record displays the musician’s lifelong, self-described “love-hate relationship” with the keys, which he says began in childhood, when he fell off a piano stool at his aunt’s house. A domestic homage, 'Spider Plant Blues' fittingly pays tribute to two houseplants that sit on Greg’s bedside tables, and move periodically depending on his whims; ‘Spider Plant Blues’ is an evening high-flyer for electric piano, unbothered drums and backing strings, while ‘Snake Plant Shuffle’ is a darker and drier organism backed by arpeggiating sytnhy blossomings in the stereo mix.

Review: A hugely exciting and thoroughly danceable new 7" from Florence Adooni, blowing any other artist who could even remotely hope to stake a worthy claim to contemporary highlife out of the park. Following up her debut single 'Fo Yelle' on Philophon, the Ghanaian Frafra Soul singer returns backed by an eight-member troupe, made up of young talents from the highlife scene of Kumasi, Ghana. 'Uh Ah Song' and its inverse counterpart 'Otoma Da Naba' are slick, clean and joyous daytime jaunts, with the former track lyrically meditating on familial and childhood themes while effortlessly pinning down a difficult-to-maintain-for-most uptempo highlife backbeat and improv. The B-side, meanwhile, pays tribute to the supreme terrestrial creator central to Adooni's native Frafra community, and centres on a heptatonic electronic, nigh acid riff and lo-fi texture with a "je ne sais qoui" that, in our view, renders it the tune of the year so far.

Here he delivers one of his strongest vocal works, with lovely harmonies and the the theme of returning home to Africa, while B-side dub amplifies the rhythm and has electrifying energy that's perfect for the sound system. Dub & Sound International, a Finnish label, is quickly making a name for itself in reggae circles with its signature roots reggae sound and here again label boss Jaakko Penttinen handled the mixing in the best old school style. Stay tuned for more equally infectious releases later this year.

Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community are a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45 RPM format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. Need a party starter? Get this!

This time he serves up some re-edits and reworks of old and rare records from Scru's friends' collections. Up first is 'Roots & Culture' which is a languid funk workout with Prince style vocals bring some libidinous vibes up top while sci-fi synths and raw claps and perc all flesh out the groove. 'Possibelle' then cuts loose on a much more laid back and steamy summer vibe with the sort of chords that have you laying back in the park and staring up at a cloudless sky.

Review: Producer Soul Supreme is back with another 7" record, delivering two new phat'uns to that subsection of fans who prefer things on the wonkier side. Following earlier, acclaimed tributes the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Mos Def, the new 'Dues and Don'ts' b/w 'Fraud Fades' 45 features two, all-original jazz-funk groovers by the Amsterdam-based keyboardist and producer. The former track burns slowly, carefully building up around a harpsichord improv, Herbie Hancock style, coming heavy-set by a thick and booming drum backing that soon enough late-blossoms into a cinematic, stringed soaring-on-high. The latter track pays complementary homage to the funk drum breaks of yore, with the central drum line around which the track is built echoing Serge Gainsbourg or Clyde Stubblefield, albeit making conspicuous its own electronically sequenced, not entirely live-performed, feel.

'Refuse' is an original cut made with O.Love, a renowned turntablist and vocalist and notable subject of DJ City's popular 'Turntablism Meets Soul Music' documentary. 'Refuse' is lent a well-rounded and nigh perfected, yet lax sheen, with DSK's unagitated add-prod lending a laboured swing to O.Love's brilliant beltings. His latest fantastic 45 doesn't appear on either of those imprints, but rather parent label Tugboat Editions. For those who like authentic-sounding revivalist boogie, we'd recommend picking this up - both tracks are re-inventions of old tunes with E Live's colourful, synth-powered twist. Check first 'Make Me Move', where glossy female vocals rise above a squelchy bassline, shimmering synths and unfussy drum machine percussion. Even better though is Hurwitz's flip-side cover of Skyy classic 'Here's To You' - a boogie gem that he re-invents as as a deeper, smoother and dreamier slab of neo-boogie squelchiness.

Review: Dave Lee's "AC Soul Symphony" alias has been releasing delectable and sultry disco since 2005 but reached his magnus opus in 2023 with the release of the "Metamorphosis" LP. Here we find two tracks handpicked from the album and delivered, for the first time, in a 7" format. The single starts much as the album does with the track "Windy City Theme", beautifully scored, recorded, and produced legato strings envelope the track, punctuated with horns and vocals reminiscent of a Love Unlimited Orchestra production. This version of the track has been rearranged, speeding up the pacing of the track and reaching the juicy parts in a really satisfying way. On the flip side we have the title track from the album "Metamorphosis", which is the first time the vocal version has been made available on Vinyl. A bass laden intro gives ways to glistening pianos and those signature strings (have we mentioned how good the strings are?). A more laid back and seductive track than the A side, but no less appealing. Again, due to the limitations of the 7" format, "Metamorphosis" has been expertly rearranged with loving care and attention.

Get Ready For The Young Folks
Dre's Night
Review: France's faves Battle Weapons deliver two heady new edits, only for those ready. On the A comes an ingenious, probably never-done-before, almost laughably why-hasn't-anyone-else-ever-thought-of-this-until-now breakbeat rendition of Peter Bjorn & John's 'The Young Folks'. To be frank, they've not done much besides beef up the backbeat a little, but a simple sprucing up is sometimes all a tune needs. On the flip comes a phattened version of 'Forgot About Dre' mashed up with the Azzido Da Bass UK garage classic 'Dooms Night', also produced to hilariously, surreally arresting effect.

Review: There are not many songs in the history of hip-hop that are more important than 'Hip-Hop Hooray'. The track single handedly helped catapult underground rap sounds into mainstream success. The song was a massive hit moving into the top ten on the Billboard and #1 on the hip-hop chart and with a memorable video directed by Spike Lee, it was in heavy rotation on every music and video platform. Naughty By Nature became household names and the single went on to sell platinum status. You could not escape this anthem of the streets. Now, the groundbreaking song is reissued on 7" for the first time in over 30 years.

FMPM
Review: Rocksteady Disco has pressed up another tasty little hand-stamped 7" and it offers up another fine brace of Edits From Detroit on this third volume in the series. Eddie Logix is the man behind the buttons and he kicks off with 'BOSS' which has low-slung guitar sleaze and slow-motion groove rotations topped with sprinklings of percussion, angular rock riffs and guttural vocals. Flip it over and things get more smooth and seductive with 'FMPM' which has a dubbed-out disco feel, subtle cosmic chord work and bouncing bass that will keep any 'floor moving. Another great little 45.

I Can't Understand It
Loleatta Disco Flip
Review: Expert record collector, skilled DJ, Moodyman collaborator and beatmaker Andres aka DJ Dez is back not long after the release of his last album with a new 7" on David A-P's Hot Pot Records. He opens up this one with 'I Can't Understand It' which has the exact sort of dusty drums and subtle hip-hop stylings to the groove that you would expect of this storied groove specialist. It will get the floor popping off in no time and on the flip, he shows off his skills on the MPC by chopping up 'Loleatta Disco Flip' with plenty of hefty drum work and a sprinkling of percussion that keeps whitings moving. Another irresistible drop from the Detroit mainstay.

Review: In a landscape of musical innovation, Leisure Dub emerges as a collaborative force led by Alex Storrer and Paul Byrne. Their inaugural release, Weekend Waiting, showcases the fusion of forward-thinking R&B and dubby electronics. Featuring the vocals of Kat and guitar of Simo from the London-based collective Armanious, the A-side exudes soulful melodies and ethereal soundscapes. Contrasting this, the B-side presents a 'jeep beat remix' that delves into the realm of dub and chill, creating an introspective and atmospheric sonic experience. With the promise of future collaborations, Leisure Dub establishes itself as a project poised to explore the boundaries of contemporary electronic music.

Gangsta (instrumental)
Review: Fresh, hot-off-the-plate yet classic-sounding gangsta rap from the collaboration of Free Nationals, Anderson .Paak and A$AP Rocky. ‘Gangsta’ flips the script of the genre, lyrically examining the hip-hop genre’s historical obsession with gangsters, while more avowedly narrating the story of a “wangsta” whose wannabe proclamations of realness have no match for Rocky and .Paak’s authentic intuitions, owing to their true-blood, inherited street knowledge. It’s a fresh, empowering new move from the LA-based hip-hop group, whose sound evinces a well-produced, jazz-flavoured and Dilla-eqsue wonk come clarity of sound, as ever.
