Review: The Zodiac's Cosmic Sounds is an album from November 1967 that very much reinvented the psychedelic rock blueprint. The basic idea for it was one by Elektra Records head honcho Jac Holzman who was inspired by the commercial success of the debut album from The Doors which was released on his label. He enlisted some top people to get involved with the record from composer Mort Garson to lyrics written by Jacques Wilson via produciton from Alex Hassilev of The Limeliters. Lots of spaced out Moog sounds define the record and some interspersed folk poems add another edge entirely.

Review: You don't have to be a film score obsessive to recognise the name of Hans Zimmer; the man who has practically created a monopoly out of the craft. While his work on the recent Denis Villeneuve adaptations of Dune has currently ended his creative partnership with auteur filmmaker Christopher Nolan (who has since enlisted the exceptional Ludwig Goransson in his stead), during their collaborative tenure, no particular score garnered the adoration and passionate praise that still continues to be heaped upon 2014's sci-fi spectacle Interstellar. Featuring some of Zimmer's most mercurial work to date, swaying from lilting hues of delicacy to bombastic, palpable, otherworldly dread, without ever veering into alienating sonics; the pieces still receives copious applause, instigate enthralling discussion and continue to be repressed to vinyl. In short, the Interstellar score is the outlier soundtrack for every collector.

Review: The US' Music On Vinyl always provides the quality reissues, and best of all, they do it quietly, leaving the diggers and owners of the original copies still relatively chuffed with their treasures. As such, it's the Yellow Magic Orchestra that receives the reissue treatment this time, a Japanese electro-pop outfit formed in 1979, and which includes the great Haruomi Hosono on bass - producer of the timeless and mind-bending "Hosono House". Solid State Survivor was the band's second album, and although it was released before the start of the '80s, it already contains remnants of electronic dance music as we know it today. The glassy opener is called "Technopolis", for example, and the majestic synth twists of "Rydeen" are a pleasure to our ears even today. There are slower, more magical moments such as "Castalia", but the winner for us is probably "Insomnia", a great piece of drunken drum machine drums and wonky melodies. An absolute must, even for the non-Japanese heads.

While being tagged primarily as a pop work, it's really more of a lesson in synth manipulations and nutty beat-making. Review: The third full-length from one of the UK's "big four" thrash metal acts, Xentrix, was quite the controversial project upon its initial release in 1992. Leaning into a more progressive metal influence saw the band abandon some of their metallic potency in search of more texture and artistry. They've since gone on to refer to the work as the biggest mistake of their career, while it also led to the departure of vocalist/guitarist, Chris Astley, until his 2006 return after the band reformed. Like most albums steeped in artistic self-deprecation and early fan backlash, 'Kin', has gone on to find its audience, with expectation and anticipation now removed from the conversation, the group's attempt to strive for material beyond their integral make up is as refreshing as it is forward thinking for an early nineties thrash record.

Review: The highly anticipated eighth full-length from Dutch symphonic metal legends Within Temptation comes four arduous years since the release of 2019's overlooked Resist. Hindered by global lockdown due to the COVID pandemic putting up barriers and blocks in the midst of the prolific collective's recording process, singles have been slowly drip-fed to the masses over the past few years with anthemic closer 'Entertain You' first being unveiled all the way back in the summer of 2020. At this point in the late 80s the scene already had genre classics such as Metallica's 'Master Of Puppets' and Slayer's 'Reign In Blood' to contend with, making it a free for all of pummeling thrash acts doing their utmost to not get lost in the ether. While some often cite 1989's 'Insult To Injury' as the total showcasing of their prowess, Ticket To Mayhem is testament (no pun intended) to the myriad of vital bands that kept the thrash movement pulsing beneath the major heights and laurels of a select few, with Whiplash finally receiving the praise and credence they had initially earned so many decades prior.

Review: A whole bunch of Weather Report albums are being reissued at the moment and listening to them all reminds of the impact the US fusion group had. At first they were improvisational experts and free-jazz experimenters who eventually veered towards a more funky, r&b tinged sound. They always used the latest synth technology alongside the likes of Wayne Shorter's superb sax sounds. Their self titled album very much announced their arrival as a stunning avant guard debut in 1971. It was brave and brazen and full of imagination from a gifted set of musicians.

Review: American fusion group Weather Report were only active for just over 15 years but amassed a fine discography and assured their legacy in that time. Saxophonist Wayne Shorter is the most well-known of the band's members and after starting out as an experimental and free improvising outfit they eventually got more funky and edgy with hints of r&b creeping into their sound. The band always made use of the layettes synth technology and were one of the defining acts of the jazz era of their time as a result. Their eighth album, 1978's Mr Gone, is one of their most loved and ended up at Number 1 on the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart.

Review: Widely acclaimed and much loved American jazz fusion outfit Weather Report very much dominated the jazz landscape of the seventies and early eighties. It had an ever-rotating assembly of musicians throughout its history with the likes of Austrian keyboardist Joe Zawinul, American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Czech bassist Miroslav Vitous and American drummer Alphonse Mouzon. 8:30 is their second live album and it came in 1979, swiftly rising to No. 3 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart and also winning a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance. Zawinul wrote the majority of the tracks which are all freely improvised and escapist.

Review: American jazz fusion outfits don't come much more venerated than Weather Report. Fronted by leader Joe Zawinul, the ensemble evolved subtly throughout their career and it was in 1974 that they dropped this album, Sweetnighter. It proved to be a little more funky and influenced by the emerging t&b of the day than its predecessors and it is also noted for being the last long player the band cut with original bassist Miroslav Vitous, as well as being the band's first album to make it into the Top 100 in the US charts of the day. It sodas as good now as ever on this nice heavyweight vinyl pressing.

Noted for its pushed back release due to vocalist Jani Lane suffering a nervous breakdown upon catching his best friend and girlfriend "entangled", an encounter detailed in lyrical form on the band's single, 'I Saw Red', which would feature on the following year's sophomore effort, 'Cherry Pie'; there's still no ignoring or denying the infectious cheese, stadium-sized riffs and endlessly catchy hooks that still prop up this debut as a (not so) timeless classic of its stature.

Review: American r&b and jazz fusion singer, arranger, musician, composer and conductor Dexter Wansel made an indelible impression with his debut album back in 1976, Life On Mars set a new standard for fusion sounds while also serving up what is still considered a space-funk classic. More than that, though, the album which was inspired by David Bowie's Life On Mars also has the seminal 'Theme From The Planets' on it - the drum beat from which is often said to be one of the foundational beats for the hip-hop scene that emerged soon after. As such it's not a shock to know that the record has been sampled endlessly by greats like Drake, Ice Club, Lil Wayne and Kanye. Stick this one on and prepare to be wowed all over again by Wansel's masterful use of his ARP 2600 synthesizer.

Review: It's hard not to fall for the version of 'Stayin' Alive' featured on the Dominic Lewis-scored and curated soundtrack to Bullet Train - the 2022 David Leitch movie that unfolds on one of Japan's world-famous, super speedy, and appropriately nicknamed 'bullet trains'. The composer made some smart decisions pulling the choices together, opting to focus largely on East Asian pop and rock, with some bold inclusions. One of which is the aforementioned opener. In so far as overuse goes, The Bee Gees' seminal disco anthem is up there with the greatest, and that makes it difficult to find something new to enjoy in it. Drafting Avu-chan, of Japanese 'fashion punks' Queen Bee achieved the unthinkable, then, and sets the tone for a number of excellent covers by Japanese artists (Bonnie Tyler's 'Holding Out For A Hero' by Miki Asakura, 'Kill Me Pretty' by Tamio Okuda of Unicorn), alongside an impressive set of originals from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carmen Maki, and more.

Review: It's surprisingly not that common for a director to pick music for their movie. There are accomplished experts at scouring and sourcing the most powerful and moving tunes for cinema, and, of course, composers who have established themselves as maestros of silver screen scores. Luca Guadagnino is an exception to the rule, then, with his coming-of-age drama, Call Me By Your Name, soundtracked via his choices. And what choices they are. The film itself is beautiful and incredibly moving, adjectives which also apply to the accompanying sounds. From the theatrical pop of Loredana Berte, to the staggering instrumentation of Ryuichi Sakamoto and heartfelt cries of Sufjan Stevens, this collection of tones is as varied as it is captivating from beginning to end, and - whether you've seen the flick or not - deserves a place on everyone's shelf.

Review: By 1996 Greek synth composer extraordinaire Vangelis - real name Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou - had become such an icon of electronic music not one but two retrospective anthologies arrived around the same time. Not bad considering this was only around halfway through his recording career, and in many ways his work was still in an evolutionary process. Gift was one of those compilations, and focuses attention on the first four records made by this Hellenic legend. Starting out with work from 1975's Heaven & Hell, from which an excerpt of the original (rather longwinded) 'Heaven & Hell Part II' has been lifted, we also get 'So Long Ago, So Clear', the artist's first collaboration with Jon Anderson (the musician-singer-songwriter whose name is credited on several other tracks here), and outstanding outings such as 'Pulstar' and 'Alpha'. A joy from start to finish.

It is 20 years since he dropped his debut album 76 back in 2003 on United Recordings and was titled after the year of his birth. It also came just after the 100th episode of his A State of Trance radio show which is still going strong today. The artists has often been voted as DJ Mag's Top DJ in their annual poll and this record has big collabs with the likes of Scottish singer Ray Wilson, Dutch pop band Krezip, fellow trance DJ Ferry Corsten and others. The big tunes from it were singles 'Yet Another Day' and 'Burned With Desire'.

This newly expanded version released by Music On Vinyl keeps the entire album in tact on the first record while smartly and thankfully, gathers a few of their most heralded other tracks of their earnest beginnings in the form of extended versions. All and all, you have the most complete packages of their early music dedicated to wax. This new expanded version is printed in a limited number of copies and comes on 180g 2x12 green vinyl. As an added bonus, there is a booklet that overviews and contains a lot of great information about this landmark release.

It was the group's second album and many of its tunes, at the request of the Mercury Records label execs, were remixes by outside producers. Hardcore fans of the group didn't like the results and neither was the album a particular commercial success, with the one hit was, ironically, a Beatminerz remix of 'Poppa Large' that never made the album. Review: Charles Strite might have invented the toaster, but it was U Roy who invented toasting. The first ever album from reggae legend U Roy aka. Ewart Beckford - three years before his self-titled debut-debut - Version Galore first appeared on Treasure Isle, and was a gleaming cornucopia of all the rocksteady singles he'd been releasing and performing since at least 1969. The album is emblematic of Beckford's distinctive rap-singing over the beat, known as 'toasting', a hallmark of all reggae-adjacent sounds to this day.

Review: Toots and the Maytals were sent back to Dynamic Sound Studios in Kingston for new recordings that eventually gave rise to the album after their Funky Kingston success. It features a number of covers of material aimed quite specifically at the English market such as John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Though first recorded in 1974, it still packs a punch and of course delivers plenty of the Jamaican band's melodic reggae with beautiful vocal harmonies. The whole thing oozes soul and is underpinned by a certain sense of spirituality that makes it all the more alluring and enduring.
