Review: With "Restless Times" Clara Hill, from Berlin, enters the stage as a solo artist for the very first time. After the first few tracks you'll notice that this is a great soul voice unfolding its beauty and versatility. Clara Hill surely knows how to bring her voice to different beats and various musical atmospheres. After you've listened the album you'll instantly push the "repeat" button. Clara Hill is just like candy sweets: you can't get enough.

Review: Beautiful vocal house cut here from Redsoul on Deep Swing's Generate Music imprint. The original mix is a perfect balance of pumping big room house beats and sweet and smooth vocals and funky rhodes. The Soularis mix takes a more west London broken beat perspective with jazzy syncopated drums, moody synth keys and bouncing Moog Bassline. On the flip, DJ Meme goes to town with a thumping soul piano house mix aimed at the main house.

Review: Pretty much since its original release in 1977, Creation Dub has been as wanted amongst reggae bounty hunters as its Wild West cover typography suggests - every track a killer making this a key Bullwackies dub album. The record inaugurated Wackies' fruitful London connection. The second-pressing sleeve carries a nostalgic distribution credit for the long-gone Maroons Tunes shop, run by Rae Cheddie for Honest Jons. The core musicians here are Allah, Clive Hunt and Jerry Harris, with outstanding contributions from hornsman Sel Wheeler and Roy Robertson on bass, and John Clarke on the single vocal track. Included are dubs of rhythms voiced for Wackies by the Chosen Brothers, Joe Auxumite and KC White, alongside versions of Mammy Blue, Bo Kirkland's soul classic 'I Want To Get Next To You' and a superb reprise of Sel Wheeler's 12" cover of Jo Jo Bennett's 'Leaving Rome'.

Review: He's probably sick of the comparisons, but Hakon's output does bring to mind the work of his neighbours Sigur Ros and Bjork, though in truth Hakon's work sits in a field of one. The Bjork similarities begin with his gift for relocating the stunning ice and volcanoes wilderness of his country from the realm of the eye to that of the ear, while, like Sigur Ros, he has a gift for populating that realm with half-seen wraiths and elemental mystery.

Review: What could happen when Miss Jale, (a make up artist and stylist, in NYC for fashion week), and Sven Schoene, (a recording artist for renowned labels such as Mouse T's Peppermint Jam, Ralf Gums GoGo label, and the Berlins Komfort Musik label) just happen to meet each other at a New York City airport while waiting in the departure lounge to catch their flights home to Europe? Especially when it comes out in conversation that she is a singer as well, and he just happens to have an albums worth of really fine music that seems to be lacking that finishing touch that could elevate it from good to great! What happens is a project called "Jester" and their debut 10 track long player, a release which takes us on a journey through lounge, jazz, and easy listening soundscapes, whilst incorporating soul, rap, and jazz-funk with just a touch of electronic dub. Variety is defiantly the spice of life as portrayed in this release, especially when each ingredient is used just at the right moment, just the right amount.

Review: Welcome to the wacky world of the La-La-Land native Busdriver. 'Cosmic Cleavage' was originally conceived as a soundtrack to a film he never made. After hooking up with super producer Daddy Kev (formerly the main man at Celestial Recordings and general production giant) and D Styles (from the Skratch Piklz and Beat Junkies) comes his Frankenstein creation. 'Cosmic Cleavage' is a cross between Jimmy Hendrix, Lord Buckley Bone, Thugs N Harmony and a TV announcer. Be prepared to hear one of the most original voices in hip hop today. Busdriver grew out of the LA Underground scene that's based around Freestyle Fellowship, Pharcyde, Jurassic 5, Abstract Rude Awol and many more. He's also a frequent collaborator with many of LAs hiphop elite such as Aceyalone Abstract, Rude Mikah 9 Daddy Kev and Omid. His 2002 self released album 'Temporary Forever' made it into many underground hip hopper's records of the year. With this release on the well established Big Dada label Busdriver is ready to conquer the mainstream.

Review: A re-release of Dutch duo Rednose Distrikt's 2004 album, as well as some cheeky new exclusives. From the previously unreleased opener "Gotta Make A Move" featuring Lady Alma's dulcet tones, it's a future-jazz masterpiece with delicately arranged broken beats punching through a mix of screwed up synths. Like Herbie Hancock's Headhunters jamming on Ableton, there's a chaotic collision of old and new and with some extra remixes from Domu and DJ Spinna also included, it's well worth giving a spin.

Review: 'Who Still Kill Sound?' aka Vol 2, for the bits that didn't fit on Kill Sound Before Sound Kills You. More nails in the coffin, purging the soul, flogging a dead laptop, milking the cow dry, cleaning out the hard drive, stuff that didn't fit anywhere else, stuff that maybe doesn't even fit here. Ingredients: two booming thematically linked neo-rave breakbeat tracks, one live acidhouse basement party jam, two rinsing ragga jungle slammers, four booty bass bouncers/two with vocals from Sue Cie of Gold Chains fame, one crunked up DJ screw tribute, one unfinished Cex remix, one sweet Emo monosynth song Kid did when 17 in lots of pain after coming home from the orthodontist, one really good different version of a remix Kid did for Com.a, and 2 gabber blowouts Kid made to finish live shows with to try and crush the soundsystem while still retaining a element of danceable fun musical enjoyment (you can decide how it all came out). Add all new artwork from Joel Trussell, the man responsible for the 'Illness' video and the illustrations from Ksb4sku and you've got the newest Kid606 joint in your hands!

Review: The third Errorsmith release contains a selection of live recordings made between 2001 and 2003 in various clubs and concert venues like Ulraschall in Munich, WMF in Berlin or Empty Bottle in Chicago. Most of the tracks on this album are interpretations of classic disco and r'n'b songs. Digitally synthesized, distorted and filtered club music which goes far beyond its origin. Less abstract and much more dancefloor compatible than the two previous Errorsmith releases, this album relates closely to stuff from Smith n Hack and MMM, projects which Errorsmith is part of as well. The live sets were played on a laptop with a self build digital live tool, a combination of a simple sequencer and a synthesizer. Errorsmith uses this tool to manipulate both the rhythmical pattern and the triggered sounds in real time. With a huge degree of freedom in playing his instrument, two gigs weren't the same and a gig had its highs and lows. How different a track could be played out, can be heard on the two versions of "Near Disco Dawn" and "In A Sweat". Initially planned to be released as studio versions, Errorsmith decided to keep the rawness, incompleteness and live feeling of the concert recordings.

Review: This time with the 8th release in this successful double mix CD techno series, DJ-sets.com is very proud to present the very first live set of one techno nations favourite live acts: Johannes Heil, who last released a superb album on Kanzleramt. All his 12"s are techno hits, like his 'The Hitmachine' series. His live set was one of the highlights of last years "I Love Techno" indoor festival, and he was chosen 3rd best live act by German dance magazine Groove. Support comes from one of the hottest newcomers in the circuit Felipe from Vienna, who besides now playing all big events in Eastern and continental Europe like Mayday (Hungary, Russia & Germany) Time Warp etc, also runs one of the Techno DJs most favoured and innovative labels called Titanium, where he releases amongst others his own tracks and collaborations with big names like Marco Bailey, Johannes Heil, Stanny Fransen and so forth. Besides exclusive tracks, this CD boosts some of the biggest names in techno around, at the moment: tracks from Chris Liebing, Umek & Jeff Mills. Both DJs deliver a tight and funky mix, a real gem for all fans of good and funky techno!

Review: Ten specially selected little pieces of art have managed to make it onto "Transformer", all of which mastered their way round the chic obstacle course brilliantly taking purism and hit alarm in their stride. Straightness and a crazed love for detail are what make the difference on this album. Artistic breaks that entice not force the listener into a euphoric state. Sophisticated techno "Made in Frankfurt" which goes to show how exciting functionality can be. With "Transformer", Alter Ego, in their eleventh year of existence, prove that techno is not only a musical world language, but also an undecipherable secret code of timeless youth culture. Countless 12"s and remixes for various icons of pop history (e.g. Human League/Cabaret Voltaire) substantiate the great importance of Alter Ego for contemporary electronic dance music!!

Review: An album of Knifehandchop's post break-up anthems take us on a sentimental journey of schizophrenic stomping electro hardcore and dancefloor death marches. 23 yr old Billy Pollard, contextualizes post-traumatic mania by kicking out the pummeling beats, extremities of high and low with songs of isolation and loss as, 'Girlfriend,' and 'We Used To Make Love' vs bouncy, bumping ragga dancehall vocal tracks, 'Outside' and 'Tizzy Tixbown.' Knifehandchop also takes the time to give big ups to the hardcore DJs and mix cassettes of his teen years with the albums vividly destructive closer 'Hardcore 94.' 'How I Left You' is without a doubt the first true Knifehandchop album. Billy wants to make it clear that this release isn't a new compilation of dancefloor singles and plunderphonic booty anthems, but his first shot at a fully immersive 'concept' album. Previous releases on Irritant and Tigerbeat6 have always raised the bar, mixing, energizing and distorting disparate genres as gabber, pop, techno, booty, ragga and ghetto-tech. 'How I Left You' is a work that reflects Knifehandchop's newest saga of bipolar drama; a frenetic new form of sonic aggression that could only come from a shot to the heart.

Review: Mondo Grosso (aka Shinichi Osawa) has been at the helm of the club scene not only in Japan but across the globe as well. He solidified himself as a hit maker through his first and self-titled album back in 1993. Due to the exceptional relationship that he developed over the years with King Street, he was the next logical choice to compile its critically acclaimed "Mix The Vibe" series. The most characteristic element about this particular "Mix The Vibe" project is what Shinichi calls a "re-groove", a unique style of re-editing tracks. This technique has enabled him to fit his personal vision and concept that best suits this compilation. This is a fantastic King Street release.

Review: It has been 25 years since Bryn Jones left us for the great musical odyssey in the sky, and reissuing Lo Fi India Abuse is a fitting way to honour a true musical visionary who is pretty much impossible to pigeonhole or accurately describe. Nevertheless, this record, as with many of his near-countless others, offers a great insight into the breadth and bold sense of adventure running through his output.

As dense and complex as anything he gave fans and followers in his decade and a half of putting out sounds, this outing first landed the year after his death, and by that point a musical identity was more than fully formed. Highly percussive, littered with aural motifs from far away lands, filtered through noise and disruption, it's an exotic form of IDM, as compelling and immediate as beguiling and off-centre.

Review: Following the success of their first semi-improvised session last year - recorded and released for posterity on Jaiyade Sessions Volume 1 - Anglo-Danish collective London Odense Ensemble reunited for a second stint in the studio. The results are, naturally, impressive, with the five-piece (saxophonist and multi-wind instrumentalist Tamar Osborn, keys-man Al MacSween, bassist and guitarist Martin Rude, drummer Jakob Skott and guitarist/producer Jonas Munk) trading solos over heavyweight grooves and spaced-out electronics. It's undeniably a jazz record, but one that also offers nods to spiralling psychedelia, acid-fried funk and their mutual love of West African music.

Review: Igor Arsenjev works as Gradient and puts out an awful lot of music. It's all about deep dives in ambient, dub and techno and is well designed and super seductive for the mind. Greyscale's 25th album comes from this long-time label friend and is his fourth for the label. It is another warm and comforting listen with subtle stylistic shifts that draw you in each time. There are late-night drivers as well as more dance floor-orientated sounds, hypnotic groovers and masterfully minimalistic meditations. The opener itself is a quick highlight with brilliantly designed and rolling drums under smeared chords that set a fine tone for what is to come. A real triumph.

Review: Following the release of Drugdealer's second album in 2019, founder and front man Michael Collins was ready to call time on the band and his music career. A chance meeting with artist and composer Annette Peacock, who suggested he revisit his singing style, not only changed his mind, but also gave him a new creative lease of life. The results, as showcased on Hiding In Plain Sight, are undeniably impressive. Sitting somewhere between Steely Dan, the blue-eyed soul of Boz Scaggs and lilting Americana, the album is awash with deftly deep, emotional and gorgeous songs. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the brilliant 'Madison', the Clavinet-and-Rhodes heavy wamth of 'Someone To Love' and the 'Josie'-esque excellence of 'Pictures of You', where Kate Bollinger delivers a stunning lead vocal.

Review: London duo Kerala Dust have spent the last seven years developing their trademark sound - an unlikely but inspired fusion of psychedelic rock, Krautrock, blues and techno - via semi-improvised live performances. While they have put out a handful of releases - a low-key 2020 debut album included - it's only now that their recordings are catching up with the quality and inventiveness of their live performances. 'Violet Drive', their first full-length for PIAS, is therefore a statement of intent: a genuinely unique album in their distinctive style that's guaranteed to get plenty of plaudits from critics. Highlights include the hypnotic, chugging dancefloor blues haziness of 'Violet Drive', the krautrock-goes-psychedelic excellence of 'Red Light', and the kraut-disco chug of 'Pulse VI'.

Review: Toby Amies' documentary In The Court Of The Crimson King takes a deep look at one of the true totems of British prog rock, King Crimson. As the band notches up half a century of existence, this portrait of Robert Fripp and assorted collaborators is one of those rare rock films which has an appeal beyond the die-hard fanbase. However, for the fans there is still a lot to savour, and this extensive box set is the best way to do it. Alongside the actual film there is an abundance of additional footage, two full live performances and exclusive music which is all spread over four CDs. If you love King Crimson, this is the box set for you.

Review: This is the first ever time that Omodaka's - Zentsuu: Collected Works 2001-2019 album has been made available on wax. Omodaka is an alias of Soichi Terada, a Japanese producer and composer who has become known in the west for his video game soundtracks and impossible happy and melodic house tunes. The project here was started back in 2001 while he was trying "to create a boat racing song". 80s designs, chiptune sounds, the vocals of Japanese folk min'yo and enka singer Akiko Kanazawa and fusions of house, jungle and video game sounds all make this a smile-inducing sonic adventure with plenty of dancefloor heft.

Review: Second time around for Madness's 2005 covers album The Dangerman Sessions, a set which had its roots in a number of low-key gigs they played under the alias The Dangermen. It's effectively a nostalgic return to the earliest days of their career as the Invaders, when they specialised in doing ska covers of all manner of favourites. There are some great versions on show, with reggae favourites ('Chase The Devil', 'Israelites', 'So Much Trouble In The World') being joined by ska-ified takes on the Kinks ('Lola') and the Supremes ('You Keep Me Hanging On'). This expanded reissue also includes a couple of tidy dubs and a smattering of cuts recorded for the album but not initially released, including a fine cover of Horace Andy classic 'Skylarking'.

Review: Second time around for Sneaker Pimps' Six Underground, the lesser-celebrated follow-up to the duo's renowned 'Spin Spin Sugar' single (famous, of course, because of Armand Van Helden's influential 'Dark Garage' remix). While the revisions included here - all initially released in 1996 - did not make as big an impression, all four have stood the test of time impressively. The headline attraction is a pair of Two Lone Swordsmen rubs, which are amongst the earliest reworks Weatherall and Tenniswood laid down under the alias. The vocal and instrumental takes are low slung trip-hop tracks overlaid with heady electronic elements. Elsewhere, Nellee Hooper channels the spirit (and sound) of his work with Massive Attack, and Hull boys Fila Brazillia lay down a typically deep, dubby and slowly evolving downtempo workout.

Review: In 1972, trumpeter Baikida EJ Carroll and his Black Artists Group colleagues moved from Missouri to Paris on the recommendation of their friends in the Chicago Art Ensemble. Two years later, following the release of the Black Artists Group's debut album, Carroll accepted an invitation to record a solo album. Orange Flesh Tears, recorded with guest musicians Oliver Lake (saxophones, flute), Manuel Villardel (piano, electric piano) and Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconceles, was the result: a triumphant excursion in spiritually enriching free-jazz and heady, ambient-leaning soundscapes. The first two tracks were reportedly intended to take "free jazz back to its African roots" (all bird noises, meandering solos, bells, bamboo flutes, percussion of all types and occasionally dense jazz grooves), with the other two offering sparser, more introspective improvisations where Lake and Caroll's horn solos dominate.

Review: Before he passed in 2018, the late, great Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson made a series of field recordings at Iceland's Ellidaar power plant which were inspired by the writings of Henry Adams. Those pieces inspired this new suite of music from Daniel Bjarnason and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra which also includes some of Johannsson's scores to Sicario and The Theory of Everything. It is a sublime work that joins the dots between all of Johannsson's work with soft drones, brass tones and chiming harpsichord all coming and going to make for emotional and dramatic tension. A fine reminder of one of the greats who sadly left us too soon.

Review: Re:Warm struck gold when they invited Paul Hillery to compile the first volume of Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours, so they did the right thing and invited him back for another round. Hillary started out documenting his arcane finds in this ill-defined thread of music via a blog, and now these shockingly rare gems from forgotten corners of 60s and 70s are given a proper airing for everyone to savour. This is a prime example of digging culture at its best, as a sharp curatorial ear cuts through the forgettable dross to find unbelievable tracks like effervescent jazz groover 'Weepin' by Cascada, a tune worth the price of entry alone.

Review: .Three years on from the release of his hugely successful third album, Big Conspiracy, J Hus continues to make all the right moves. Now a genuine superstar of British music, the London MC has aimed even higher on Beautiful & Brutal Yard, enlisting the vocal talents of none other than Drake on 'Who Told You' (a Latin-tinged chunk of r&b slinkiness), as well as an impressive array of fellow MCs and beat-makers across an album that consciously pulls grime in a variety of accessible, radio-friendly directions. Lyrically, there are naturally some hard-hitting moments, but for every reflection on inner-city life and wider social issues there's a dose of loved-up sweetness and weary reflections on relationships. As a result, it's an impressively balanced and impeccably produced collection.
