Review: Back in the 1990s, the combination of Mixmaster Morris, Jonah Sharp (he of Spacetime Continuum fame) and Haruomi Hosono was the closest thing you got to an ambient supergroup (the Orb's collaboration with Robert Fripp and Thomas Fehlmann as FFWD not withstanding). The trio only recorded one album together, the sublime Quiet Logic, but it's an absolute doozy - as this timely reissue proves. For one reason or another, it was only ever released in Japan at the time, meaning this is the first time it has been available worldwide. As you'd expect with such masters of the art form at the helm, it is genuinely superb - a slowly evolving opus that moves between unfurling, dub-fired ambient techno ('Waraitake') to ambient jazz eccentricity ('Dr Gauss/Yakan Hiko (Night Flight)'), via deep ambient d&b ('Uchu Yuei (Night Swimming)') and deep space ambient.

Review: B12's 1993 debut album, Electro-Soma, has long been regarded as one of intelligent dance music's "must-have releases". Offering a decidedly intergalactic blend of otherworldly techno, ambient and deep space electronica, it remains a brilliant piece of work. Here, Warp Records give it the reissue treatment, packaging the peerless original album with a second disc of early B12 rarities and hard-to-find cuts recorded during the same period. There's naturally plenty to admire on this bonus disc, from the shimmering electro bustle of "Transient Pathways" and Motor City futurism of "Debris", to the intoxicating ambient brilliance of "Go With The Hiss". That this material is every bit as good as the tracks included on Electro-Soma is testament to the (then) duo's rarely matched brilliance.

Review: Given that Warp Records has described this set from ambient legend Brian Eno as "almost as much musical novel, as a traditional album", it's perhaps fitting that this limited edition comes housed in a hardback book. The album's narrative unfurls slowly across the album's four tracks, picking up pace during the 26-minute "Fickle Sun" suite of tracks. Predictably, it's all hugely atmospheric and attractive, featuring a mix of dreamy electronics, twinkling pianos, poetic spoken word extracts and, according to Eno's own notes, "three-dimensional recording techniques". Perhaps most intriguing of all, though, is closer "Fickle Sun I'm Set Free", which sees Eno paying tribute to the hazy, psychedelic pop of Harry Nilsson.

Review: The latest Nurse With Wound release takes a deep dive into Stephen Stapleton's arhives and returns with a radically expanded version of 1990 set The Ladies Home Tickler, a typically eccentric and out-there blast of sonic surrealism crafted from tape loops, spoken word samples, weird noises, fractured electronics, and shards of bass, synth and guitar. In this edition, the original album's two lengthy tracks ('Duelling Banjos' and 'Registered Nurse') come accompanied by six previously unreleased cuts recorded during the same sessions, but previously unreleased. While one of these is an alternative take on 'Registered Nurse', the rest are increasingly wild and pleasingly freeform soundscapes in Stepleton's distinctive style. An essential purchase for dedicated NWW fans.

For this new project, the Basic Channel pioneer has teamed up with Vocalconsort Berlin. It has taken the best part of eight years from conception to final execution but that more than proves worth the wait. Time and duration are recurring themes in their work and during the pandemic yeas in particular those were very much skewed and warped for us all. ". . . on reflection" casts itself free from temporal restraints with delicate piano passages, flickering melodies and drawn out drones that really sink you in deep.

Review: Like many ambient and drone artists, New Zealander Rudy Adrian specialises in ringing maximum emotion from abstract electronics, experimental tones and immersive, widescreen soundscapes. As the title suggests, Reflections on a Moonlit Lake is another emotive exploration designed, in his words, for "rest, reading, meditation and sleep". For proof, check the slow-burn swell of opener 'Mirror Island', where echoing wood block hits and lapping waves rise above immersive chords and yearning melodies, the Pete Namlook-goes-to-the-South-Island flex of 'Lunar Shadow', and the faintly foreboding half asleep/half-awake haziness of 'Within The Darkness'. Review: Andre 3000s 87-minute flute epic makes it onto a double CD courtesy of Sony. One of the most intriguing, enveloping and therapeutic LPs of 2023, New Blue Sun sees the Outkast veteran drop the mic in favour of myriad flutes, both digital and acoustic, creating a loose, patient album which sounds somewhat like the lovechild of Jon Hassell and Ras G. The whimsically named tracks unfold in a languid dream sequence, feeling improvised but focused, sparse yet dense, and deeply emotive throughout. 3000's far-from-virtuosic flute performances add to the charm and unpredictability of the album, and ensure that the overwhelmingly gentle music doesn't veer too far into vapid new-agery. The Frenchwoman lives in Paris and this new and comprehensive four-CD collection brings together all the concert music she ever played. Review: He may be a shoegaze and dream-pop legend, but sometime Ride guitarist and songwriter Andy Bell has spent much of the last few years making ultra-immersive, out-there ambient soundscapes that are as mind-soothing as they are enveloping and, at times, overwhelming. Tidal Love Numbers, his latest album, once again puts his gorgeous, layered guitar playing front and centre, with collaborators Masal (a duo from Essex) providing complimentary harp, synth and drum sounds. They call the resultant four tracks "ambient, astral jazz". That's a fairly apt description, with the four stretched-out tracks sitting somewhere between Bell's own ambient work, the ambient-Americana of Jonny Nash, and the open-minded experiments of 21st century harpists such as Zeena Parkins.

Review: 'Faded Photographs' is the latest album project by Icelandic producer Yagya. Featuring his usual blend of ambient and dub techno, this one is also among his first to incorporate elements of deep house, pop and classical music, with friends Oskar Guojonsson, Benoit Pioulard and Bandreas cropping up on vocal and saxophone features. Despite the fact that there are over eleven tracks on this opus, every track on the album makes use of 3/4, rather than the bog-standard quantised 4/4, time. The overall effect is a skippier, dreamier, more laid-back queering of techno, contrasting to the straight and unswung vibe of its square forebear.

Review: Ambient explorer Tapes & Topographies (real name Todd Gauthreaux) tends not to talk too much about his work. Instead, he's content to simply serve up new albums and let the music do the talking. 'Microtones', his latest full-length, is another softly spun, exceedingly immersive affair in which enveloping, dream-like electronic textures, sustained drones and slowly unfurling chords wrap around effects-laden instrumentation (we can identify pedal steel, piano and strings). There are subtle nods to neo-classical, jazz and cinematic soundtracks, but this is grown up, headily emotional, entirely beat-free ambient music of the sort you'll want to get lost in time and again.

Review: It wasn't so long ago we were writing about the joys of BVDUB's Fumika Fades, a new double pack in February that sunk us deep into moving ambient soundscapes. Now the Bay Area dub techno titan Brock van Wey is back once again with yet another album - he dropped plenty of them last year too so is clearly in a mad creative patch. Slowly Shifting Lakes comes in multiple formats, this one being a double CD. The ambient here is coarse and textured, fizzing synths stretching out over skittish rhythmic frameworks before sinking into calmer waters on cuts like the escapist 'Searching For Glowing Shores.' Another triumphant album for sure.

Review: This is well known and much-loved ambient album amongst those who follow the genre closely, and after various vinyl formats before now, it finally arrives on CD courtesy of Past Inside the Present. The hugely prolific zake - who often releases several albums a year - and 36 really go deep on this one. It is a quietly epic and certainly adventurous journey into outer space where echoing sonic tones and drifting sound effects all melt into one another as electronic melodies arrive and disappear to soothing effect. There is an almost classical architecture to these grandiose tracks which makes it all the more of an absorbing and beautiful listen.

Past Inside The Present has now secured the rights to issue it themselves on a new CD. This new single 'Cadere' is taken from Dawn Chorus and the Infallible Sea's forthcoming long-player, which will arrive in the Spring of next year, and it comes on a rather unusual glass-mastered 3" mini-CD which includes a download link and code. It's a lush and widescreen ambient single detailed with subtly uplifting chords coated in lo-fi hiss and hum. Also included is a live version of 'Alpha' which in its original form was on a previous album of the same name. It's from James Bernard and Kevin Sery and was recorded live at the Gothic Chapel in Indianapolis so has a decidedly spiritual edge.

Review: Past Inside The Present welcomes the excellent pairing of Brock Van Wey aka Bvdub and vocalists and instrumentalist Lacey Harris aka Inquiri for a brilliantly escapist new ambient EP, Destroyesterday. They combine to majestic effect with 'All The Weight Of The World' a swirling soundtrack with vocals floating amidst the melancholic pads. 'Alone In Crimson' is more textural and suspenseful and 'Please Let Go & Let Me Hold You' then has the spoken word vocals front and centre as intense synth crescendos sweep you up. Review: Harald Uunk's take on techno may be angular, electronic and refreshingly avant-garde, but his creative inspirations are far more natural. Unseen, his expansive debut album, was not - as some may assume given its sonics and largely dystopian feel - influenced by the urban environments in which he lives and works, but rather his frequent adventures in the countryside. That's not immediately evident, but if you close your eyes and listen intently, the various off-kilter polyrhythms, distorted electronic motifs, ghostly electronics and dubbed-out textures soon conjure mind images of stumbling around dark woods and fields in moonlight and pre-dawn drives down deserted rural roads in the Netherlands' most isolated spots. More importantly, it's a hugely enjoyable and evocative beast, even if it does tend towards the dark, intense and unsettling.

Review: German artists and Noton co-founder Alva Noto composed the soundtrack to 'This Stolen Country Of Mine' back in 2022. It has arrived both on vinyl and now on CD and is an accompaniment to the documentary film which explores the question of a state's sovereignty in the face of foreign powers, portraying Ecuadorian resistance fighters and journalists who oppose the sell-off of an extensive part of the country's resources to Chinese investors. Those themes sure are heavy and Noto is up to the job of matching them with his minimal, but tense score. It is quietly powerful and determined much like the communal spirit of the Ecuadorian mountain villagers.

Review: Apparently inspired by 1980s computer game soundtracks and the synth-heavy scores to fantasy films, M83's "DSVII" is slated as a sequel to the band's 2007 set "Digital Shades". If so, it's a rather belated one, especially considering the French outfit has released three studio sets and a swathe of soundtracks since then. Regardless, the material here is deliciously evocative, emotion-rich and atmospheric, mirroring the ebb and flow (and peaks and troughs) associated with soundtracks whilst relying entirely on i80s-sounding synthesizers and drum machine hits. It's basically synth-wave, with Symmetry's "Themes From An Imaginary Film" - itself based on music initially intended for the "Drive" soundtrack - being an obvious comparison.

Review: Astonishing, 22 years have passed since the release of Stefan Betke's debut album as Pole. Along with the "2" and "3" albums that followed in 1999 and 2000 respectively, it helped establish him as a producer with a defiantly distinctive, dub-fired sound: a brand of electronic minimalism that drew just as much on ambient and micro-house as it did techno and of course reggae soundsystem culture. Crackly, spaced-out, hypnotic and mind-soothing, all three albums sound as fresh now as they did when they were first released. Helpfully, Mute has decided to reissue all three at once via this box set. There are no bells and whistles, just three essential albums in a plain black box. Review: While Ben Frost's work has long been marked out by deft-touch dark ambient, experimental instincts and clandestine aural textures, he's always thrown in surprise excursions and drawn on musical inspirations that other like-minded producers would fear to embrace. This latter characteristic comes to the fore on Scope Neglect, his first solo set for six years. Remarkably, it utilises the moodiness, weight and ten-ton guitar licks of metal - played by Car Bombs guitarist Greg Kubacki and bass-slinger Liam Andrews of My Disco fame - as a starting point. Frost naturally puts these through the sonic wringer, combining them with his own skittish, IDM-influenced beats, dark ambient soundscapes and razor-sharp electronics. The results are unusual, impressive and emphatically enjoyable, sitting somewhere between timeless electronica, Nine Inch Nails and experimental metal.

Review: This is a CD verison of Ryuichi Sakamoto's very welcome return to the fray. It is his first solo album since 2017's async. Milan Records have released 12 in January to coincide with the venerated Japanese composer's 71st birthday, and the timing is poignant given the album draws from musical sketches created while Sakamoto battled for two and a half years with cancer. Sakamoto himself describes reaching for his synths as a kind of therapeutic response to a big operation, and so the music carries an added depth of personal experience from one of the most profound ordeals a person can go through.

Review: Featuring material recorded 30 years ago, the 12th volume in the late Klaus Schulze's La Vie Electronique series features two full pieces (one split into three movements over two CDs) that first surfaced on the long-serving electronic experimentalist's 10-disc Silver Edition box set in 1993. 'Picasso Geht Spaziren' ("Picasso Goes For a Walk") holds the title of Schulze's longest released composition - a sublimely spacey, two-and-a-half hour synthesizer exploration that was initially intended to be used as the soundtrack to a German movie. The second piece is 'The Music Box', a warmer and more colourful journey through synthesizer-driven ambient which was named in honour of a Laurel and Hardy movie and was later used by one institution as part of music therapy sessions with serious alcoholics.

Review: Eternally Frozen Maple Death sounds like a dramatic way of describing some scientific process of natural mummification, but it's actually the name of this solo album by Italian drummer and composer Andrea Belfi. A tribute to Belfi's late father, who passed away in 2019, the album is composed of four long-form pieces that reflect on the themes of loss, memory, and time, all felt by Belfi in the moments afterwards. Minimal percussion, synthesizers, and tape loops combine across its breadth to form a meditative and melancholic sound, much like the moments of hollow 'frozen' stasis felt in the weeks and months after such an impactful life event.

Review: Nosaj Thing's fifth studio album, 'Continua' - his first full-length excursion since 2017 - earned plenty of plaudits when it first appeared on streaming platforms in the autumn. Listening to this belated CD edition, it's easy to see why. Warmer, deeper and dreamier than much of his work, it begins with the picturesque pianos-and-ambient pads of 'Continua' and ends with the drowsy, slow-motion electronic dream pop of 'Different Life' with vocalist Eyedress. In between, he shuffles between deep, breakbeat driven dreaminess ('My Soul or Something', with KAZ), chopped and screwed aquatic soul (the serpentwithfeet-sporting 'Woodland'), gently jazzy ambient soul ('Grasp', which features a trio of guests), ethereal hip-hop wooziness ('Look Both Ways' with Pink Siifu) and impeccable ambient pop (Panda Bear hook-up 'All Over').

Review: On his first album for the admirable Lontano Series label, Spanish ambient producer David Cordedo offers up alluring, immersive soundscapes inspired by his love of wandering through woods and forests. It's easy to imagine the sun peeping through a canopy of leaves and branches on sunrise-ready opener 'The Great Sadness', while the sustained chords, drowsy sound design and reverb-laden organ notes of 'Orma' evoke mental images of becalmed woodland clearings at nightfall. While the concept may be loose, the music - and especially the sublime, slowly unfurling 'All Your Silences' and the bubbling, Pete Namlook-esque 'Los Alcornocales' - is magical enough to both follow the brief and work as an enveloping, life-affirming ambient masterpiece. In a word: picturesque!

Both are experienced and visionary musicians who we're told spent four years crafting their self-titled debut album and allowing it to mature and "become ready for the light." Review: LILA has got five or six albums of artful ambient dropping all in quick succession and this is a third from Ludvig Cimbrelius, who has dropped one under his Eternell alias, one as Abraco de Vapor, and one under this, his oldest moniker, Purl. He also works as Illuvia and with all his projects he has mastered the art of sonic daydreaming and musical journeying. Ancient Skies is a record packed with a more intense, textural, heavy style of ambient that builds tensions and in some places has subtle implied rhythms. It makes for an involving listen that is much more than simple background music.

The celebrated composer and ambient artist is consistently investigating musical possibilities from a learned, authoritative perspective and so this latest project finds her expanding on an initial invitation to the Composer's Kitchen residency in the Netherlands. Review: Second time around for Scott Morgan AKA Loscil's seventh album, Coast/range/arc, which first hit record stores way back in 2011. It's an album worth revisiting - or checking for the first time, for that matter - since it offers a near perfect distillation of the ambient producer and sound artist's now trademark sound. Full of beautiful, icy and slowly unfurling compositions that tend towards the meditative, the set is notable for Morgan's seemingly innate ability to craft immersive soundscapes out of a mixture of hazy drone textures, gaseous electronic chords, soft-touch melodies, atmospheric field recordings and simmer, near cinematic musical movements. This reissue also includes the previously unheard 'Black Tusk (Descent)', a deliciously woozy piece of Biosphere-esque arctic ambience.
