Into Dark Water (140 gram vinyl LP)

  8. Steppe Land (6:42)
Review: Following on from the excellent "Scene In Mirage" reissue that broke O Yuki Conjugate to a whole new crowd, Emotional Rescue return to the archives of the over-looked Nottingham "dirty ambient" outfit. Their second LP "Into Dark Water", originally released in 1987, is just as powerful as the first - a hypnagogic journey fuelled by a global stew of sound, feeding into elegant, evocative pieces. Fans of classic Jon Hassell will find much to enjoy here, but equally those appreciating the exotic post punk undercurrents of 23 Skidoo et al will easily find themselves drawn to the likes of "Ba-makala". Stunning, borderless musings from a hidden treasure of the UK's post-industrial heritage.

Review: While Tom Jenkinson has kept himself busy over the last few years with a variety of projects, there's been little as frenetic, mind-altering and exciting as his previous Squarepusher work. It's for that reason that "Be Up A Hello", his first full-length under his most famous alias for five years, is such a welcome development. From start to finish, it's a thrill-a-minute white-knuckle ride full of fizzing, high-octane acid lines, skittish up-tempo breakbeats, buzzing electronic melodies and surging bass. It's a sensory overload in the best possible way, with early forays into melodious, kaleidoscopic positivity making way for darker and nervier workouts later in the album. By the end, you'll be breathless and twitching, eager to press play and experience the madness all over again.

  5. Kawe's Dream (feat Ayan) (3:28)
Review: When it comes to hybrid blends of intoxicating world music sounds and contemporary dancefloor rhythms, few producers are quite as accomplished as Nicola Cruz. He's at it again on "Hybridism", the Equador-based Frenchman's first EP for Multi-Culti for almost three years. Opener "Aima" sets the tone, with Cruz wrapping lilting synth lines, weirdo electronics and chanted vocals around a bubbling electronic groove, while "Naeku" makes the most of echo-laden drums, what sounds like an African children's choir and faintly foreboding acid lines. "Drom Tradisie" is an exercise in trippy sounds and layered percussion, "Third Eye Dub" is a darker and moodier slab of techno-exotica and "Kawe's Dream" is a blissful blast of clarinet-sporting musical positivity.

Review: Since launching in 2011, James Healy's Air Texture label and compilation series has become something of an institution within the ambient scene. As with its predecessors, the seventh volume in the series has been jointly compiled by two artists with an existing musical relationship, in this case Rrose and Silent Servant. Their selections are on point, drowsily drifting between academic ambient compositions (see Rrose and James Fei's "For Bass Clarinet 8.97 (Rrose Version)", uncomfortable electronic explorations (Ron Morelli, Anthony Child), modular movements (Not Waving), jazz-flecked deep space soundscapes (Luke Slater), horror-influenced throb-jobs (Phase Fatale, June & An-i) and 1990s style ambient electronica (Octa Octa, Function).

Review: Last March Suction Records released "Dopamine", an album of unreleased late 1990s recordings by obscure and arguably overlooked Dutch producer Erik Jong AKA RX 101. "Serenity", the sequel, was compiled from tapes of tracks recorded in the same period. It's a little different to its predecessor, offering creepier, drowsier melodies and far more robust, redlined beats - the kind of metallic, mutant IDM drums associated with the mid-to-late 1990s output of both Autechre and Aphex Twin. The quality threshold remains high throughout, making us wonder why Jong's inspired creations weren't released when he made them. Whatever the reason, it's great that we now get to wallow in his soon-to-be-classic 90s IDM treats.

Review: On their hotly anticipated debut album, Passive Refraction invites us up to the "27th Floor" of an imaginary hotel in the heart of Tokyo, a place where you can gaze in wonder at the neon-lit cityscape. Musically, it's an immersive experience, where dreamy, slowly unfurling ambient chords and vivid synthesizer sounds reminiscent of Vangelis' "Blade Runner" soundtrack intertwine with sampled voices, hazy aural textures and quietly loved-up melodies. It's the kind of album that you can imagine being classed as a 21st century ambient classic 20 or 30 years from now, which we think you'll agree is high praise indeed.

Review: Berlin / NY collective Climate of Fear releases its debut EP, "Laika's Revenge" - two tracks of sorrowful and menacing technoid expansions. Side A's "Escape Pod" shimmers like a mirage on a desert landscape, nearly evaporating in the heat; on Side B the title track is five minutes of roiling thunderstorm ferocity. Following his breakout 2018 lp "Sekundenschlaf" on Blackest Ever Black, "Laika's Revenge" expands on the artist's fevered vision of the dance.

Review: Virtuoso musician Jon Hopkins and Kelly Lee Owens are a perfect compliment for each other on their new EP for Domino. Both are leaders in their field and used to exploring outside the usual lines, which is what they do here. "Luminous Spaces" was meant to be an Owens remix of a track from Hopkins' 2018 album SIngularity but instead she recorded new synths and vocals for it. The result is sparkling bit of melodic and astral techno that gets you lost in the lushness as you sink ever further into a trance. "Luminous Beings" is a deeper anymore thoughtful vision that makes a different but equally real impact.

Review: Katie Gately's second album "Loom" is a very different beast to its predecessor, 2016 debut full-length "Color". Deeply personal and recorded during her mother's ultimately unsuccessful battle against a rare form of cancer, it sees Gately reflect on grief and loss in a surprisingly confident and musically alluring manner. The assembled tracks make extensive use of both densely layered vocal textures and her own distinctive lead vocals, elements which she mixed with ear-catching melodies, woozy electronics and beats that were crafted in part from recordings she made of Californian earthquakes. You'd expect it to be tonally dark given the subject matter, but it's actually far more bold, beguiling and melodic, drawing just as much influence from more pastoral styles of music as Gately's usual experimental electronics and intricate sound design.

  3. Lambda (7:18)
  4. Asimov's Code (6:36)
Review: Relentlessly prolific Boris Bunnik brings his electro-focused Versalife alias to 20/20 Vision, a label which has been excelling at a renewed focus on the sounds of electro in recent years. The 808 beats are crisp and snapping, like they should in proper electro, but the synths shape out the atmosphere in brooding, dystopian strokes shot through with a certain mournful quality. It makes for engrossing, emotionally charged material perfect for the dancefloor as much as headphone reveries - just flip to the gorgeous "Aegis" and feel yourself drift away to somewhere mystical in the far reaches of the future.

Uniformity Of Nature EP (140 gram clear vinyl 12" in screen-printed PVC sleeve + download card)
Cat: DET 002. Rel: 27 Jan 20
Experimental/Electronic
  1. DYL - "Phrases" (4:05)
  2. Senking & DYL - "Destroyed City Lights" (4:57)
  3. DYL - "Words" (4:29)
  4. DYL & DB1 - "Uniformity Of Nature" (5:58)
  5. Senking - "Launch" (4:31)
  6. DYL - "Semantics" (4:05)
Review: Czech label Detach launched back in 2015 with some low key firepower from Moll+, and now they're back with a split release that showcases some fiery upcoming talent in the field of experimental electronica. The sound DYL is exploring on "Phrases" is rabid and deconstructed, but equally bristling with analogue energy. Senking jumps in with DYL for the more rhythmically structured "Destroyed City Lights", which balances sweet and savage tones beautifully. DYL and DB1 create a stern, percussion led variation of electro on "Uniformity Of Nature" and Senking's solo piece "Launch" jettisons off into misty blue pools of synthetic expression, making this a record that surprises and satisfies at every turn.

Review: With releases on a who's who list of labels that are pushing experimental, underground house and techno including L.I.E.S, Creme Organisation, Echovolt and Strange Life, William Burnett has been steadily putting out releases that have gained a lot of respect without having to shout too loud about it. So much so that as well as running his own stella WT Records label, William is now often cited as a producer's producer. Deep and full of dub aesthetics that encompasses a world of it's own, his music is not just driven by a need to keep the floor moving, but are also about taking your headspace somewhere else. Progressing things a stage further is the Black Deer project. Recently launched, but in gestation for some time, it's introspective slant, plus loose referencing to his upbringing in Texas, allows William more freedom for experimentation. The Last Tortuga is taken from the same sessions that yielded the Willie Burns The Overlord EP on Trilogy Tapes as well as Black Deer's Trail Of Tears EP on Rush Hour, this 6 track EP has been due on the label for sometime, but it's been worth the wait as his sound has developed and expanded to take in ambient, drone and krautrock and highlights his musicianship in a new light.

Review: This short lived but seminal Dutch band that formed in the mid-eighties only recorded one album of cosmic and ambient excursions on an independent cassette release in 1986. The first re-issue came out ten years later on Container (Staalplaat) and now; twenty years on we finally have the second re-issue on a remastered double LP. Chi also reformed recently for a comeback concert at London's Cafe OTO too, This wonderful time capsule will appeal fans of obscure prog rock as it would to seekers of oddball Balearica who flock to labels such as Finders Keepers/Cache Cache or even Claremont 56. Props to Astral Industries for this one!

Remixes Volume 2 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 046-2/MT 013. Rel: 29 May 18
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Red Axes - "Shake The Mind"
  2. Jamie Paton - "Take Me To The Beach"
  3. Prins Thomas - "Sudaniyya"
  4. Khidja - "Simple Helen" (feat Borusiade)
Review: Emotional Rescue and Malka Tuti serve up another round of top shelf remixes and revisions of John Rees Lewis' mid-late 80s project C Cat Trance, following in the wake of the Screaming Ghosts compilation. First up to bat are Red Axes, who bring a seductive line in loose and limber drumming to "Shake The Mind" that should suit the Fourth World dancefloor massive just fine. Jamie Paton brings a tough, clamouring intensity to "Take Me To The Beach," while Prins Thomas takes a truly spiritual approach when weaving the intricate arpeggios and percussion of "Sudaniyya." Khidja and Borusiade team up on "Simple Helen," presenting a dense and hazy trip into exotic territory with sinister undertones.

  10. Luz1e - "Transvision" (6:17)
  11. Sansibar - "Cyberdine Systems" (7:00)
Review: On "Bubble Chamber", Swiss label Gentrified Underground pays tribute to Detroit electro legends via a compilation - and accompanying 56-page booklet - featuring music, images and words inspired by the publicity-shy group's work. Fittingly, it begins with a solo track by Drexciya's Donald Gerald as Xor Gate (the creepy, otherworldly modular ambience of "Hyperbola") and goes on to showcase cuts from contemporary producers that touch on various aspects of Drexciya's work. Highlights include the punchy, bass-heavy tech-funk of DJ Dijital's "I Am Morpheus", the shimmering undersea brilliance of Plant 43's "Evapotranspiration", the strangely swung electro/new wave futurism of Iko's "Approach On Tokyo" and the classic Drexciyan electro dystopia of Luz1E's "Transvision".
