Review: It's hard not to be impressed by everything Grimes touches. From the moment this album's trippy downtempo titular opener emerges from submerged depths of sound you know the latest from the Canadian is going to be a special moment in pop. As if to accentuate our point, "Delete Forever", two tracks later, introduces acoustic guitar tips while still retaining deep timbre and utilising effects to hypnotic ends on those hummed vocal loops. "IDORU", which closes out the record, feels far more playful, simple keyboard and whispered choral lyricism introduced with a backing track of bird song, before broken club beats fall in. It might be most fitting to finish a write up on the aptly-titled "You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around", its guttural bass guitars and EDM-leaning vocal stabs not the only things reminding us the world would be weaker without this one.

Review: So far we've yet to hear a duff track or release from Flamingo Pier, a hybrid Anglo-Kiwi crew whose vibrant and colourful music combines a plethora of musical influences in pursuit of disco-fired dancefloor gold. There's tons of goodness to be found throughout their latest collection of cuts, from the drowsy, Holy Ghost style deep disco warmth of opener "Tripping Up", to the sprightly '80s electrofunk brilliance of "Boogie Meltdown". Sandwiched in between you'll find two more heaters: the kaleidoscopic, synth-heavy nu-disco cheeriness of "Indigo" and "Jungle Groove", a tight and throbbing proto-house number that sounds like the missing link between Paul Simpson and Escort.

Referencing Sleaford Mods on heavy opiates wouldn't be too far from the mark at times, although we're not here to simply use touchstones - Archy Marshall deserves better than that. Despite almost everything on "Man Alive!" being so quiet, it packs an incredible level of noise. Subtle licks, strange details and a deceptive depth would be one way to describe the whole package. Review: In the run up to the big reveal of her second album, lush-yet-broken Los Angeles singer songwriter Alexandra Savior was interviewed by Billboard magazine. Therein she expounded on the difficulty in making an album coherent, and judging one's own work.

It's safe to say "The Archer", produced by Sam Cohen's exceptional ear and released on Danger Mouse's ever-explorative and daring label, is both coherent and wonderful. "Soft Currents" opens a relentlessly high scoring track list with sombre, heartfelt vocals and piano, confirming Savior as an artist who can easily adopt more traditional aural styles. Things don't stay that way for long, though. "Crying All The Time" wouldn't sound out of place on a Lynch or Tarantino soundtrack, "Bad Disease" owes much to bluesy R&B, and "Saving Grace" packs a real psychedelic punch. We could go on, but the point should be pretty clear already.

Review: If you're even close to 35-years-old, the initialisation "MTV" and the word "Unplugged" likely conjures images of peak-hype Nirvana, arguably the most defining and revered of all this format's many moments. Nevertheless, Courtney Barnett's electric-free contribution to the series, recorded live in Melbourne, may well be the best conceived in the episodic series. Rather than going down the usual "Unplugged" route - hits, covers of classics and a few from the new album, sans power chords, - Barnett confirms what those paying close attention have always known to be true. Yes, she's an inspiring and inspired artist, as work like "Nameless, Faceless" shows (here turned into a duet even more resonant and chilling than the original). But she's also a community leader, a gifted collaborator who has nurtured peers - and with half this album reimagining others, she's clearly still determined to let them shine.

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Review: With the combination of band name and album title this one's always going to be a bit of a tearjerker, packed with self-reflection and self-loathing. No regrets, though, as Greg Gonzalez muses on sensuality, the loss of those we care about, the loss of self to another and the endless yearning of the human heart. Shades of Lord Huron and a wealth of gloomy shoegazers can be felt, but even though "Cry" represents a next step for Cigarettes After Sex - edging into more minimalistic territories - it's still immediately identifiable as this band, and so won't fail to instantly resonate with avid fans. Packed with an exquisite, opiate balladry at once heartfelt and heartbroken, it's hard to tell whether this is exactly what you need to hear when living through your blue period or precisely what you shouldn't listen to. Either way, it's quiet impact is immense.

Review: If this is your first encounter with Best Coast since the dreamy, sun-kissed rock 'n' roll of debut "Crazy For You", be prepared for a surprise. Loyal fans, meanwhile, are likely to see this latest offering as a logical progression for the talented lot, launching from the starting blocks with enviable propulsion and refusing to hold anything back until the record reaches its conclusion. There's so much muscle involved at moments you could be forgiven for thinking the Pixies were at work - "Everything Has Changed" could well have scored a grungy 1990s flick. In other moments, their pop sensibilities come to the fore, perhaps more than at any moment in the past, "For the First Time" recalling the likes of Fleetwood Mac or Blondie's most electronic moments. An altogether proud and confident record, if this is where Best Coast have got themselves we implore everyone to catch up as soon as possible.

Review: The latest effort from British post punks Wire sets the record straight. And then re-emphasise the point. Having been the first word in the genre for five decades now (credited with its invention in 1976), 'Mind Hive' confirms that longevity hasn't killed creativity.

It certainly sounds like the band in question, but they are still looking for new reference points to further immerse us in their aural world. By that we're talking elements of dream pop, surrealist ambience, metal and psychedelia, resulting in an album that cuts through the noise and grabs you by the earlobes. Opening on the ferocious 'Be Like Them', only to close on the hugely atmospheric and, at times, meditative 'Humming', it's destined to satisfy long term followers while enlisting a new generation of fans.

Review: If you've ever seen the "South Park" episode, "Two Days Before The Day After Tomorrow", spare a thought for Lanterns On The Lake. The outfit have been in hiatus over the last four years, returning to studio and release schedule in a world increasingly hellbent on a worrying course. Their earlier work offered warnings of impending fallout from towns that time forgot, among other omens. Those chickens have come home to roost in reality, and the vocal cries of Hazel Wilde don't ignore this. Opening number "When It All Comes True" is proof enough of this. Nevertheless, this latest expands the horizon, still dealing with big problems only different ones. Isolation, dependency and - looming largest of all - a world set ablaze by its own people.
