Ode To The D
Review: In recent years, the producer, label head and DJ Kerrie Anderson has been gaining attention for her powerful and riveting techno sounds. The 'Machine Alliance' 12" offers four heavy and classically-fashioned techno tracks, with the title track an intense all-out energy full of tension and sensory overload. 'Symbiosis' is a heavily chord driven banger while keeping things on a sinister level and the Surgeon-like 'Technology Dream' a dark and unstoppable builder. Lastly, 'Ode To The D' is the ideal piece of futurism that is worthy of the Detroit name. For those who like their techno sci-fi as hard as it is banging, this EP should be right in your wheelhouse.

Review: For the legendary label Tresor to put out a breakbeat record is something very rare. The ardent techno label for over 30 years is clearly telling us without saying, how good this music is. Tresor is always in touch with rave music though and it's not fully surprising that Tresor would support any music that is so reminiscent of the old skool days like Digital Entropy is. Datashader rises from the depths to give us their wicked debut. The EP is an audio onslaught that combines blistering breakbeat gems like 'Velocity 04.22' with eerie sci-fi pieces like 'Sync Out Off'. The AFX like 'Fong' and 'Sub Osc" are early favorites from those who have heard samples of this haunting record. It is rare to see the power of rave, breakbeat and IDM presented this well on one record.

Review: Tresor is a titanic techno brand that has very much had a large say in how the genre has sounded over the last few decades. The German club and label now welcomes Parisian artist UFO95 into the fold with his Backward Improvement EP which draws on elements of all the genre's many niches from London to Detroit to Berlin. 'Cogitor' is thumping and wried up with warped lines, 'Sexual Tension' has a more seductive sound with a rubbery and funky bassline and 'Fragment' then brings panel-beating loops for peak time showdowns. There is pure sci-fi atmosphere to the bells and the sonorous synths of 'Solar' and 'Gargk' closes down with a glitchy and ambient-laced breakbeat monster. Great variation makes this a useful EP.

Review: DJ Shufflemaster (real name Tatsuya Kanamori) first saw fame with Tresor's release of the 'EXP' album all the way back in 2001, at a time when the Berlin clubbing institution was already aiming to shine a light on techno scenes beyond its own walls. Vastly ahead of its time, the tracks on the album (now once more called to our attention via this reissue) are what we'd have considered ourselves more liable to encounter in the UK in the mid-2010s; tracks like 'Onto The Body' have a broken beat feel to them, and many tracks verge quite readily off the edge of 4x4 kick drum orthodoxy. A compressed and washy techno album drawing on every influence from dub to Brummy sound.

It is there that they return with what is presumably a new series, Refreshing Part, as this is installment one. They have a frantic and frantic techno sounds rooted in the 90s school of box banging. 'Never Sleep' opens on that manic tip before 'Gaze' is a little more stripped back but no less potent. Elsewhere the caustic textures of 'Into A Diamond' are almost enough make your eyes water.

Review: Tresor's extended focus on reissuing old Drexciya and Drexciya-related projects continues here with this version of Shifted Phases' 'The Cosmic Memoirs Of The Late Great Rupert J Rosinthrope'. A short-lived alias of Drexciya's beloved James Stinson, Shifted Phases' only LP here is one of few affiliated projects that has remained out of print ever since its rather low-key release in 2002. Wildly popular despite it, the music heard on the album is undeniable early electro, locking in a characteristically frank, almost meek, yet astro-nautical electro sound. Scratchy crud and sonar feedback beeps extend to the deepest sonic reaches on this one; you better salvage it from the abyssal waters of history (by copping it), and quick.

Released under their given names Karl O'Connor and Peter Sutton, the record is a noted zenith of the Birmingham techno scene of the era. It has had a major influence on the music that was released in the years after and has here been remastered for a fresh double vinyl pack. As well as the original sounds, there is also 'Theme From Streetwalke,' a track that was previously released on a Tresor compilation. The tracks are heavy but relatively stripped back. They're packed with texture and atmosphere and never less than hugely compelling.

Review: After a five year album-hiatus, the iconic UK artist is back with his highly-anticipated release, Crash Recoil, which has found its home on the equally iconic Tresor. Drawn from the spontaneous experimentation of Surgeon's live sets, Crash Recoil spans eight MIDI-sequenced, hardware-reconfigured tracks, inflected with the artist's signature penchant for raw and rugged sound. The first track, 'Oak Bank', builds up to a throbbing core - a cacophony of driving percussion and side-stepping melodic layers that shift expertly in and out of focus. 'Second Magnitude Stars' moves with a tidal rhythm, like waves retreating backwards across shingle before crashing forwards once again with force. 'We Laugh & Clap At The Circus' is, texturally speaking, a touch lighter and more spacious, yet still replete with a sense of spiralling chaos. 'Leadership Contes' feels closer to ground-level - earthy yet eerie atmospheres meld with drums that seem located in the subterranean. A masterful album from the techno key-player - well worth the five year wait.

Review: For the latest volume in their essential reissue series, Tresor has decided to offer up a brand new edition of Robert Hood's celebrated 1994 debut album, "Internal Empire". A quarter of a century after Hood first committed it to wax, it remains one of the Motor City maestro's most potent and inspired works. It effectively defined his throbbing, minimalist style, with heavy and hypnotic cuts such as the bleeping "Minus" and deep and wonky "Within" perfectly encapsulating the stripped-back genius of Hood's production. If you've yet to acquire a copy, we'd recommending grabbing one of these: in truth, no techno collection is complete without it.

His latest full-length is a little different, though, offering up club-focused cuts that mix his usual fuzzy aural textures and dub-fired motifs with up-tempo techno rhythms. By his standards, it's a very forthright set, with highlights including the noise-soaked stomp of "Reiki", the thrusting heaviness of "ITO", the hypnotic slam of "Jade" - where breezy, early morning electronics flutter away above tough drums and a mind-altering bassline - and the boisterous peak-time techno anthem "Scrawler".

Review: Legendary Berlin techno label Tresor welcome Oscean for a standout debut EP. Oscean is a collaboration between Argentinian scene-leaders Sebastian Galante, also known as Seph, and Andres Zacco. They bring a propulsive sound and dense arrangements across the four cuts. Each one moves fast, with 'Feral' having scraping textures and rubbery drums racing onwards, 'Spacion' riding on a supple drum line that bubbles and boils and as a searching synth pans about the mix and 'Austraal' ends in Millsian style with electronic funk buried deep in its bones. It is the scuffed up broken beats of opener 'Spiral' that wins us over the most, though.

It channels plenty of Drexcyia vibes with its cinematic sound and sci-fi overtones and sounds as good now as it ever has. All of the tunes on it have been remastered from DAT tapes and included along the way is 'Original Flow' which wasn't on the album before and has never been released. It was only recently unearthed having been written in 2000.

Review: Of all the many Drexciya-related projects, Transllusion is surely one of the finest. Coming in the twilight years of James Stinson's life, there's a bittersweet quality to Opening Of The Cerebral Gate but it doesn't hold the force of the music back. From 'Transmission Of Life's searing arps to the nasty machine funk of 'Negative Flash', this is Stinson running at full clip, speaking that innate Drexciyan language through the machines in a manner which has been oft imitated but never even remotely matched. Reissued by Tresor in 2014 with a bonus 12", now it's presented with a fresh sleeve design which evokes the cyberpunk mood of the music in fine style.

Review: The unstoppable techno juggernaut himself, Robert Hood is back on Tresor with some of that minimal machine music he basically defined back in the 90s. "Master Builder" is a masterclass in proper minimal techno, using a thrifty set of tools to make for utterly immersive, time-slipping techno. The subtly shifted "Sandman Option" mix of the track moves the position of the looping bleeps to create a different groove around the steadfast kick - juggling the two could be a lot of fun for creative DJs. Providing a different flavour on the flip, "Quartz" brings some bolder synth strokes into the mix, winding up with the quintessential Detroit track.

Review: Given the reissue wave of Drexciya-related material has been trucking for more than 10 years now, it's quite remarkable this masterpiece from the late James Stinson has waited so long to be reissued. Originally carried on Tresor in 2002 as one of the final releases he put out in his lifetime, the one-off Shifted Phases project feels loaded with context not least with the album framed as 'Cosmic Memoirs'. This is unmistakably Stinson's work, veering from rubbery machine funk freakery to the melancholic, back room electro mood of The Other People Place, all presented with due care across three discs by the Tresor faithful and including two outstanding tracks which were previously only available on the CD edition.

Review: Waajeed's Memoirs Of Hi-Tech Jazz came out on Tresor in late 2022 as a definitive statement from a true Detroit original. Following the Motor City Madness remixes 12" which accompanied the album drop, here comes a follow up single shining fresh light on the project via a whole new set of remixes. There's no need to introduce a legend like Mark Broom - a stalwart of UK techno who brings his decades of experience to 'Right Now' as he remains in an enduring purple patch. Staying in the UK but coming from a whole different angle, Yazzus brings her upfront flair to one of the most compelling, emotionally charged pieces on the album, 'The Ballad Of Richard O'Bryant'. Then it's left to Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code to link up for a remix of 'Memoirs Of Hi-Tech Jazz', complete with some of Black Nix's original poetic flow over the top.

Review: Tresor is celebrating 30 years in the game with a series of special reissue projects. This one really goes way back to almost the start, when Juan Atkins was already defining the early techno sound. For this one he linked up with Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann in 1992 for a second iteration of the 3 Men in Berlin project. The monumental results join the dots between Detroit and Berlin across a collection of timeless cuts that meld bassline funk, hypnotic minimalism and soulful machine sounds into propulsive, emotive dance floor joy. The unbridled energy and cosmic elegance of 'Jazz Is The Teacher' might just be the highlight.

Review: In the seemingly endless slew of prime techno that Mr. Watson issues forth, it seems as though everything is coming full circle as he settles into a regular thing with Tresor. After last year's Atom EP, he's back with more of that uncompromising, melodically-endowed business. "Interference" is pure drama, with nail-biting synth lines pursuing a tense end, while "The Secret" opts for a more effervescent outlook, lightening the mood considerably. As with previous efforts from Vince, the synths rule the day, giving you plenty of punch to pack in your bag for those standout moments in the heat of the night.

Review: Shortly after first getting together in the studio in 2010, Puresque duo Michael 'Mocca' Kunz and Paul Brtschitsch approached Tresor with an idea for a party. As a "sound taster", they took along an eight-track demo of their varied techno productions. It's the meat of that demo that makes up Leitmotiv, their debut full-length for the legendary German techno imprint. As an album, it's really rather enjoyable, offering a distinctly warm take on club techno that belies their Berlin roots. Cloaked in the hiss of analogue machinery, it effortlessly moves between guitar-laden groovery ("Parafin"), Belgian hoover revivalism ("Sabelressein"), darting party gear ("Salamande") and balls-out techno-funk ("001A").

Review: For underground techno heads of a certain persuasion, the idea of mysterious Detroit collective Scan 7 returning to Tresor - their home for a time in the 1990s - will be enough to bring on a dizzying rush of blood to the head (or, perhaps, the groin). There's no doubt that it's an exciting prospect. So, have they delivered? Undoubtedly, yes. "The Resistance" itself is a gorgeous piece of retro, string-laden techno with a classic house twist - all long, drawn out chords and Knights Of The Jaguar riffs. The remainder of the EP, though, is formidably dark, with the murky, hard-as-nails "In And Out Of The Groove" and shuffling "Why Not" proving their grimy dancefloor credentials.

Review: Twelve years after the first installment, Terrence Dixon returns to Tresor to follow on where his debut album left off, intent on flinging us into the distance once again. As one of the bravest auteurs in Detroit techno history, there's always a mild sense of unease upon first listen to many of his ideas and concepts, and he's in fine future-shocking form across these tracks, but once calibrated your head can find a lot to catch on to within such loping madness as the atonal melodies and drunken triggering of "Sleight Of Mind". It's not all weirdness though, as the relatively soothing "Horizon" attests, but for truly inventive, genuinely fresh techno you'd be hard pushed to find better than this.

Kerri Chandler - "Cobal"
Marcelus - "Y02"
Maan - "Jackin'"
Review: According to the PR blurb, Kern is Tresor's new mix series and focuses on "where old meets new, and house meets techno". The first mix comes from Parisian legend DJ Deep, from which these three exclusive, never-heard-before tracks are taken. There's plenty to get excited about, from the dubwise Detroit hypnotism of Marcelus' "YO2", to the techno-tempo deep, jackin' house of Maan's thrilling "Jackin". Best of all, though, is the contribution from the ever-impressive Kerri Chandler. His "Cobal" - a fusion of loose, swinging house beats, darting electronics and starburst synths - is arguably his strongest track for some time.

AES - "In My Head"
Review: Tresor again opens its vault, this time skipping the '90s inspired techno for four old school house cuts from Deepside, Santonio, Xperiment and AES, all of which featured on DJ Deep's excellent Kern mix CD. Deepside opens the first volume of Kern rarities with an acid based drum dance in "III", whereas Santonio plays on looped keys and jumbled strings in "Amnesia". Xperiment hits up a plodding bass line alongside a Beverly Hills Cop sounding melody and jacking drums, and AES brings the only vocals to the EP with a classic cut of Chicago house.

Suspension
Review: After a double dose of twelve inch brilliance for the Deeply Rooted label out of Paris, rising talent Marcelus serves further notice of that prefix with an EP on heavyweights Tresor. The label has just celebrated their 250th release with a trio of Juan Atkins EPs, and following this might instil a sense of trepidation in some producers. Not Marcelus though, as this four track Super Strength EP finds him in superb form. Leading with the title track, the 25-year-old Parisian launches with menacing intent, huge waves of post apocalyptic pressure swirling around the stereo expanses atop a thick set techno chug. Alongside it "Falcon" ascends with a slanted progress - all detuned chimes and shifting percussive touches jostling urgently for attention in mind-bending fashion. This sense of organised chaos seeps all the way to the runout groove on the flip with "Rachel's Groove" fizzing manically throughout its entire duration while "Suspension" imbues proceedings with the faintest sense of melancholy amidst the cacophony of rattling rhythms. A serious release!

Review: Another one from the Tresor vault - this one dates back to 1994. Once again it's Sir Jeff at his unrelenting best, bringing his Detroit influences to the nascent post-wall Berlin techno scene, and once again the BPMs hit the heart attack zone. If you want an idea of what those parties were like in the vaults of the old Wertheim department store, just listen to "Whisper" or "Basic Human Design" and you'll start to get an idea of how amazing this scene actually was. Mills, we salute you. This is one for the ages.
