At the dawn of 1990, a year on from their album release and a year before their official disbanding, the group dropped the There Will Be Quiet 7", boasting two of their most monstrous cuts, 'Forget This Time' and 'The Storm II', and now for the first time in over three decades, their ever-faithful label-home Revelation Records have authentically reissued the OG 7" single for both lifers who've likely parted ways with their copy, and newcomers still unearthing the plethora of classic material that built the bedrock for the scene's current moment in the sun. Review: Early on in Muslimgauze's (Bryn Jones') career, the musician released two ultra-mysterious releases on the equally mysterious label Hessian, which some speculate might've been comprised entirely of Jones himself. Hammer & Sickle was one of these two early LPs from the faux Arabic auteur, and was notable for its distinct lack of any back cover artwork (who needs a visual stimulus when you've got such great music on board?). Though still indicative of Jones' work as Muslimgauze, superfans will note that this release sounds a little more formative than some of his later releases, owing to its lessened use of Middle Eastern instrumentation and sparser production in general. B-sider 'Fear Of Gadaffi' is the most intermittent in this regard, revelling more than anything in the simple effect of spring delay on sampled, freeform perc hits.

Review: A decade ago, German brothers Frank and Christian Berman created a genuinely overlooked masterpiece: an album that combined classic vocal and instrumental performances from soul, jazz and funk performers (extracted from multi-track tapes of the original recordings) with new Brazilian-flavoured backing tracks featuring some of Brazil's most famous and storied musicians. The album, credited to Studio Rio, kicked off with this: a shuffling, samba-fired version of Bill Withers' classic 'Lovely Day' that's arguably even sunnier and more positive than the great man's original soul recording. It's a genuinely brilliant version, all told, and one that sounds like a summer festival and end-of-night anthem in the making. Mr Bongo thinks so - hence this must-have 7" single that pairs the vocal version with a previously unreleased instrumental take.

Now welcoming back polyrhythmic electronic music trio Oyobi to the roster with a fresh 7" with two tracks detailed, we're bowled over by this slice of true newness from the lifers. First up is a jubilant buzzer shared with Colombia's finest, pico sound system legend Kaiman Jimenez; 'The Bottle / El Trago' pairs crisp hatwork with two-stepping syncopations and mettalic additions. On the B-side comes an alternate version with Karen Lee Andrews reinterpreting the vox in English, which to us lime-juicers reveals a pensive take on alcoholism. No reason to not get up and dance, though!

Review: A reissue of 2022's covers single, Alvarius B's 'Karaoke' gets a second run via Unrock. A titan of the US underground singer-songwriter scene, Alan Bishop is best known as a co-founder of Sun City Girls and owner of the labels Abduction and Sublime Frequencies. His less-known alias Alvarius B has nonetheless seen an extended panhandle of releases at least since 1994, and plays host to a string of 'characters' and sub-pseudonyms. One such 'charakter', as he calls them, is Karaoke, whose forte is covers of noir cinematic rock classics. Here we've got two dark rundowns; on the A, a dark rundown of Ennie Morricone's 'Solo Nostalgia' from the film Comandamenti per un Gangster, and on the B, a version of Indonesia's finest Koes Plus' 'Tiba-Tiba Ku Menangis', whom Bishop had already interpreted as part of the band Koes Barat. Review: Hot on the heels of their High Tide In The Lowlands LP for Sub Rosa, mesmerising Egyptian psych-rock and free improvisers Dwarfs Of East Agouza release two live recordings on this 7" for Unrock. A-side cut 'Speaking In Tongues' was recorded at Les Ateliers Claus in September 2017, with additional mixing in 2021 from Adam Zidan. On the flip, 'Organism 46-B' was recorded in 2015 in Alexandria, Egypt at a venue called El Cabina. Both sessions capture a band unbound by rockist conventions, sometimes locking into a shapely groove and other times freewheeling through disjointed noise, as is the free improvisation way.

Review: This is a reissue of a rare soul single by The Nu' Rons, a vocal quartet from Salem, NJ who recorded only around four singles in their still-strong career. Surprisingly, 'You Came Thru' was not one of them, and is yet another new single to be issued for the first time via Cannonball, after renewed interest in the band came about sometime in the late 2010s. 'You Came Thru' is a slick and uptempo expression of gratitude for love, while the bundled-in 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' is a comparatively slow and sweet, yet no less tight, paean to the a golden era of love.

Review: Shotgun Records follow up recent successes reissuing the likes of Sam Dees, Eddie Floyd and Sir Ted Ford, and now re-press this in-demand number by Sandra Wright. 'I Come Running Back' is a favourite among soul fans, but this is the first time it has been issued as a single, one of nine tracks recorded with producer David Johnson at Broadway Sound in Muscle Shoals in 1974. Intended for an album project entitled The Wounded Woman, the masters were leased to Stax Records for a promised release, but only two singles were released on the Truth sublabel before Stax collapsed in bankruptcy in December 1975. It was only much later in 1989 that The Wounded Woman heard a full release, after which 'I Come Running Back' exploded in popularity, as it was always destined to do. The song is a blissful glitterer, brimming with bittersweet coming-of-age lessons of reconciliation and nostalgia.

Review: The history of hip-hop has always had some disagreements on who started what and in the creation and evolution of the genre. One piece of history that seems to get overlooked is the transition from radio to TV that helped the music move from a regional activity to a national and cultural phenomenon. While the big New York radio stations took the credit, Spectrum City was doing its own thing just down the road. Not only did it feature a show by Dre Dre and T-Money (which would later evolve it to MTV YO Raps!) but it showcased the birth of Public Enemy as well. Review: Emotional Rescue takes another trip into the twisted world of post-punk dubs, electronics and oddities here at the hands of DJ, collector and radio host Gary The Tall. The original comes from German duo and new wave innovators Die Radierer whose pop-reggae jam 'Batman' is irresistibly catchy with its low-slung beats and lazy, sun-kissed melodies. It appeared on 1983's In Hollywood and was recorded at their home studio on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. Gary The Tall's remix finds him teaming up with Aaron Coyles under his new alias of Exotic Gardens and the results are loopy and dubbed out to perfection.

Review: For anyone who heard it, Rasa's gorgeous 'When Will The Day Come' was one of the standouts of Kerri Chandler's timeless and masterfully eclectic entry into the DJ kicks mix a couple of years ago. It's a warm, slow, soul gem with Balearic guitar riffs, swooning strings and an impossibly smooth vocal. It is one of those expensive and sought-after treasures but gets reissued here on 45 rpm courtesy of Backatcha. On the flip is an equally lovely and seductive soul cut for warm afternoons and loved-up dance floors. 'Questions In My Mind' has pristine vocals and happy piano chords next to plenty of sunny melodies.

Review: Somewhere between a sauerkraut connoisseur, an ancient Athenian philosopher, and a crate-digging obsessive (we'll assume this is the threefold meaning of the nominal pun until we're course-corrected) Saukrates returns with a new single 'Driftin'' via Love Touch Records. This new limited 7" is indeed as, perhaps even more so, delicious as a jar of pickled cabbage considered in Socratic dialogue. The Juno-nominated Canadian icon is here heard teaming up with producer Gil Masuda, who provides a neo-eighties synthfunk bomb over which Sauks flaunts his singing chops (this is a surprise delicacy, as Masuda is not often heard since his 2006 Big Black Lincoln project). Bursting pianos glide over huge gated digi-snares on this gem, the featureless version of which also appears on the B-side.

Review: Japanese jazz masters Nautilus strike back again with their first release of 2024, 'Georgy Porgy', a special label collaboration between Oonops Drops and their Japanese label Urban Discos (Diskunion). The title number is a cover version of the yacht rock classic 'Georgy Porgy', with Nautilus' version heard performed alongside UK-based vocalist songwriter and vocalist John Turrell, one half of Smoove & Turrell, and German legend Toni-L. Theirs is a slick and maximised rendition. On the flipside is a similar classic versioning; a sweet cover version of Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together', albeit this time coming with the vocal talents of Japanese singer Keyco and brought with it a crisp, headroomy neo-soulful bent.
