  2. Nearly Forever (6:02)
  3. Foreground (6:36)
Review: After an extended, pandemic-related break, Brawther has decided to re-activate his highly regarded Negentropy label via a second EP on the imprint from former L.B Produce artist Ron Obvious. He begins in trademark style via EP highlight 'Builded Mind', a tech-tinged blend of skipping, UK garage style drums, jaunty sub bass, spacey electronics and deliciously tactile deep house motifs. He continues to fix loose-limbed and weighty garage grooves to deep and intergalactic house sounds on side two opener 'Nearly Forever', before pushing dub style bass to the fore on hypnotic late-night deep house number 'Foreground'.

Review: Dark Entries is humbled to continue digging through the archives of legendary producer Patrick Cowley. While best known for his production on chart-topping cybernetic disco anthems such as Sylvester's 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' or his own 'Menergy', Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, left us with a substantial body of work. Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley's friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist's output. This has resulted in a string of celebrated archival albums, including Catholic (featuring Jorge Socarras), School Daze, Muscle Up, Afternooners, and the recent Mechanical Fantasy Box. Some Funkettes, the latest addition to this series, is a collection of previously unreleased cover songs recorded from 1975-1977. These raw, unembellished tributes both showcase Cowley's early musical interests and chart the development of his production techniques.

  1. Arabesque Breakin' Suite (3:08)
  2. Theme From Beverly Hills Cop (Axel F) (3:39)
Review: Earlier in the year, Bjorn Wagner's long-serving fuzzy funk outfit the Mighty Mocambos offered up a must check single featuring recordings captured during an in-store performance at a German record shop. Their latest "45" follows a similar script, showcasing straight-to-tape recordings made during their performance at the JAM PDM break-dance battle in February 2020. They do their best impression of a Middle Eastern Incredible Bongo Band covers combo on A-side 'Arabesque Breakin Suite', adding suitably exotic horn lines to a killer groove beefed up by some serious bongo action. Over on the flip they breathe new life into an '80s electro break-dance fave, re-inventing Harold Faltermeyer's theme from Bevery Hills Cop ('Axel F') as a weighty, tropical funk smasher.

Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

  1. Impeach The President (feat Kelly Finnigan) (2:52)
  2. Campus Life (3:39)
Review: They say history repeats itself, and in the case of this single it certainly does. First released in 1973, it's a protest single by The Honey Drippers who were advocating for the impeachment of the then President Richard Nixon for the goings on of the Watergate scandal. It has now been put out again in the midst of the 2020 election campaign when many believe the missteps of Trump mean he himself deserves to be taken from office. Musically, it's a warm bit of classic soul with deep cut rhythms feat Kelly Finnigan. 'Campus Life' is a more happy go lucky wedge of funk.

Review: Boston's A-grade record digger, funk and soul boffin and master edit maker Kon is back with his Gang for this tidy 7" that also features Rick James. It is once again an edit aided by Kon's long time engineer Caserta, with slick, life affirming jazz tinged and super funky production. Soul Supreme is on keys, the knotted bass comes from Xander Vrienten and together they all serve up a real late summer jam that could be 50 years old. The dub is just as delicious on the flip, with more room for the lux and authentic production and very real musicianship to shine through

  1. What's Your Secret? (Bastedos edit) (9:23)
  2. Do You Blow? (5:25)
Review: Felix Dickinson has been donning the Bastedos re-edit alias on and off for 18 years, occasionally popping up with a fresh selection of superb scalpel jobs. Here the Bristol-based veteran delivers two more incendiary rearrangements. The undoubted highlight is A-side 'What's Your Secret (Bastedos Edit)', a near ten-minute rework of a Clavinet-sporting AOR disco epic that moves through waves of spacey grooves, soaring female backing vocals, impassioned blue-eyed lead vocals and more low-slung sections designed to raise temperatures out on the dancefloor. Dickinson changes tack on flipside 'Do You Blow?', successfully dubbing out an oddball chunk of electro-era quirkiness built around a killer bassline, scat vocals, breathy flute solos and body-popping drum machine beats.

Review: It's hard to believe Gorillaz, the virtual band that triggered a million sci-fi articles about culture arriving in the future (well, the new millennium), have now been going 20 years. More than enough history to have long-since proven themselves far from a fad, on their seventh album it's clear they're also still capable of new ideas, or at least fresh ways to remix old ingredients.

Punk explodes next to piano balladry, lo-fi electronica eases into low slung hip hop funk. It's a chart-worthy affair that reminds us post-genre is today's mainstream, here served in traditional songwriting framework rather than the current dominant avant-pop crop. Even if the lyrics are non-stop curveballs, from Robert Smith's appearance on the title track, through Beck's MCing on 'The Valley of the Pagans' and St. Vincent's playful party vibes on 'Chalk Tablet Towers'.

Review: Dutch digger, DJ and beat-maker Naom Offir first tickled our fancy when he was recording as Love's High on Star Creature back in 2018. Since then, he's released a couple of decent - if fairly low-key - seven-inch singles as Soul Supreme, fusing his retro-futurist boogie and synth-funk sounds with dusty, homemade hip-hop beats, deeper instrumentation and nods towards jazz-funk. It's that blueprint that he works from on this self-titled debut album, throwing in additional tracks inspired by slow house, G-funk and wonky instrumental hip-hop to keep things varied. The result is an impressively vibrant, listenable and far-sighted album that looks set to be one of the breakthrough records of 2020.

This is pure and unreserved house joy, music to party to without a care in the world. It's the bouncing drums and happy trumpets that make it so, with energetic piano stabs and driving bass all working to make you forget your woes. That makes this an extra special collector's piece even before you add the music into the bargain. Review: Belarus' Iner launches a new label with a strong cast of international names all pushing a deep and distinguished strain of house music for those who want soul and invention in equal measure. Tilman is up first with 'Sweet Dreamer', a mellow, looped up roller. Sune's 'Flutes' takes a breezier approach shaped out by fluttering jazz funk motifs. Yann Polewka celebrates the sweetest Philly strings and some classic vocal licks for a disco-infused burner you can't help but love. Iner himself keeps things loose and organic on the wonderful 'Respectfull Kind Music', while Scruscru goes for a sleek approach to chopped up funky house. That leaves it to Buzz Compass to get heady and hazy with the bass-leaning cuts coursing through 'That Nighter'.

The latest opens with 'Sunrise Dance', a gnarled and low-slung affair with Takeuchi's glistening, sun-bright guitar parts and kaleidoscopic musical textures provide a counter-balance to a heavyweight funk groove that was seemingly inspired by a mixture of Barbarra's 'Shack Up' and Herman Kelly & Life's 'Dance To The Drummer's Beat'. Takeuchi opts for a jazzier feel to his fluid guitar solos on flipside number 'Plute Funk', a more laidback but no less club-ready affair that's little less than audible sunshine.

Review: Last December, Los Angeles combo Night Owls debuted on F Spot Records with a genuine 21st century rarity: a reggae-soul cover of Donny Hathaway's 'This Christmas', featuring lead vocals from the mighty Durand Jones. For their fourth single, they've decided to deliver another cover, this time of Young Rascals' cut 'Groovin'. Their sun-soaked, rocksteady style reggae take is apparently a homage to Willie Mitchell's cover (as sampled by Wu-Tang Clan), and features Jungle Fire man Jamie Allensworth singing majestically over a jaunty rhythm track rich in heady Hammond organ sounds and toasty bass. The band's brilliant arrangement and tight-but-languid performance naturally comes to the fore on the B-side Instrumental Mix.

'Deep Tune' casts its net as low as the Mariana Trench while riding a sweet disco loop, setting the scene for a teasing, dramatic drum throwdown with nimble synth flourishes on 'Drum Track 01'. 'Shift' takes things on a more interstellar trajectory with a heady beat elevated by star-strafing lead lines, and then 'Drum Track 02' whips up another killer percussive workout that keeps the organic intensity of the beat intact while still making it totally workable for the floor.

'I'm In Love Dancin' takes source sounds from Arthur Russell's classic 'Is It All Over My Face' and repurposes them with gangling percussive lives, sunny flutes and mad horns to make for something that will shake your body loose. Review: There's an undeniably far-out feel to the Zenker Brothers' second album, Cosmic Transmission, which adds further layers of trippy textures, hallucinatory sounds and smoky intensity to the aural blueprint first explored on their 2015 debut full-length Immersion. There's much to admire throughout, from the mind-bending ambient weirdness of opener 'When Nothing is Safe', and the slipped dub haze of 'Whose In Control', to the drug-addled IDM of 'Natural Connection', and the polyrhythmic techno trip of 'Divided Society'. Most striking of all is the trio of tracks that close the album, all of which are powered forwards not by heavy techno beats (or even their usual crunchy, off-kilter breakbeats) but rather a series of ear-catching, fuzz-soaked synthesizer arpeggio lines.

'We Are Where We Are' first appeared in 2018 on a Japan-only promo CD. Back then, it was presented as one continuous, 32-minute track. Remarkably, this is the band's fifth single this year. On the A-side you'll find the "Slofat Version" of their tribute to the polyrhythmic percussion, raw bass and dancing horns of Afro-funk, which is aptly named 'Afro Cookie'. It's a chunky musical biscuit that looks set to energise dancefloors with its sugary delights every time it's dropped. You'll find the original version - a fine fusion of Clavinet and Hammond-splashed cosmic soul blessed with funky bottom-end and a superb lead vocal from Mr Jolly - on the flip, with Altroy & Jr's "Rhythmic Treatment" on the A. The reception was a collective cry of 'wow, we never knew that' because of how the film detailed Pendergrass's bad car accident and long road to recovery. It left him paraplegic but didn't stop him eventually singing once more. Long story short, he's an underrated icon who doesn't get the headlines of many of his peers. This gorgeous 7" goes some way to rectifying that with the strident funk of 'We Got Love' and more emotional and serene 'Should I Go Or Should I Stay' showing two different but brilliant sides of this essential artist which have never before appeared on vinyl before.

Review: The seventh album from South London-based producer and experimental maverick Darren Cunningham and it's a beauty. The last time we heard from him, in 2018, he was collaborating with the London Contemporary Orchestra and improvising a score for a Stockhausen opera and he's taken an element of that work with him and married it to disorientating, otherworldly electronics. 'Karma & Desire' has a real feel of escapism, almost to the extent of feeling like an out of body experience, as dislocated and disembodied melodies float around in the ether. There are the first proper vocal collaborations he's undertaken here, but the two tracks are no pop bangers, songstress Zsela's efforts sounding more like some beguiling abstract poetry. Travelling further and further, creatively, from the normal environs of dancefloor culture, he's not lost any of his spellbinding musicality or sonic storytelling skills.

Review: When Inhmost made their debut on Greta Cottage Woodpile in 2015, we remarked on the quality of their picture-perfect tributes to the cosmic, soul-warming sound of 1990s ambient labels such as Fax and Apollo. "Everything Is New", their belated second album, takes a similar widescreen, retro-futurist approach, with the publicity-shy duo delivering impeccably crafted, exceedingly atmospheric workouts that variously doff a cap to Global Communication ('Aurulia'), Pete Namlook (the quiet and contemplative 'Break Down'), Space Time Continuum ('Deeper Thoughts'), the Irresistible Force ('Sleep Walk'), Ninja Tune's almost forgotten N Tone label ('Spectrum'), and the more ambient end of Richard H Kirk's Sandoz project (the warm and wonderful 'Sometime For Time').

Funk
  1. The Blassics - "Silver Mercury" (3:41)
  2. Broaks - "Her Ability To Transform" (4:21)
Review: For their latest 45 missive, Funk Night Records has decided to offer-up a double-header of fresh instrumental funk from two Scandinavian combos. The A-side features Finnish scene stalwarts The Blassics, whose 'Silver Mercury' offers a fiendishly fuzzy mix of low-slung drum-breaks, clipped guitar riffs and all manner of tipsy horn solos. Fellow Scandi-funk outfit Broaks take over on side B, building on the smoky, seductive sound of their recent self-titled debut album. 'Her Ability to Transform' is a weighty but sparse and stripped-back trip into hip-hop influenced Afro-funk territory that comes laden with drunken horn blasts, Tony Allen style drumming and some nimble, subtle turntablism.

Review: Here's something slightly unexpected from disco, boogie, funk, soul and Afrobeat enthusiasts Favorite Recordings: a debut album from Le Deal, a swinging quartet made up of some of France's most storied jazz performers. The quartet, which is helmed by keys player Florian Pellissier, recorded the set at the legendary Van Gelder studio in NYC, a space stepped in jazz history. For that reason, it's not surprising that the album's five winding, ear-catching tracks have a classic jazz feel, with a mixture of horn and piano solos stretching out over a double-bass/drums rhythm section that's tight and together throughout. While the whole album is superb, it's the LP's most upbeat moments - see opener 'Traficantes' and the opening instalment of the flipside 'Mexican Junkanoo Suite' - that really stand out.

Review: Innovative multi-percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has put together a superb full length here. Composed, arranged and conducted by the man himself, it's a powerful listen that conveys the turbulent state of the United States in 2020. It's not all bleak, with a certain sense of hope managing to shine through fantastic turns by the late Hamiet Bluiett, as well as Corey Wilkes, Tomeka Reid & the James Sanders String Qt. The jazz here is spiritual, melodic and improvised with a mix of urgency and drama and love and hope all going to the fore throughout. This is an essential listen for all jazz fans, old and new.

Review: Few disco and boogie DJs can boast record collections deeper than the one owned by Superior Elevation chief Tom Noble. It's this access to obscure, little-known gems that makes his regular re-edit releases so darn checkable. You'll find plenty dusty, rare revisions on the Brooklyn-based digger's latest EP for Razor 'N' Tape. Exhibit A: the low-slung, dub disco-goes-Latino flex of "They Came To New York", which exhibits a similar sonic space to early '80s heroes Konk. Also impressive is the high octane, jazz guitar-powered Afro-disco brilliance of "Disco Massamba", and "Parang-A-Teng", a chant-along tropical disco workout rich in heavy bass, delay-laden piano stabs and woozy female vocals. We haven't a Scooby what records he's been playing around with, but the resultant reworks are ace.

Review: This is a perfectly obscure record of lush Brazilian jazz that can be either a perfect entry point into this sound or yet another fine piece for the collection of veterans. It is the first ever record of Jaime Alem and Nair De Candia, both of whom sing on it, and has a super cool jazzy feel, with high class and luxurious stings, Latin percussive patterns and a steamy warm atmosphere. Reminiscent of all your favourites but also with a style that is uniquely theirs, this is a cult classic packed with gems like 'A Bica De Chororo' and 'Olhos Para Sao Paulo'.

Review: It could not have been less on-trend at the time. It's 1995 and the UK is getting to grips with the commercial potential of rave, house music and other dance genres, while momentum is building behind the most unashamedly 90s and British music movement in history, Britpop. Oasis are readying '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' and Blur have just introduced us to 'Parklife'. Then along come Slowdive with their third album, arguably their deepest, most serene and captivating in the cinematic sense. The vision of guitarist, singer and songwriter Neil Halstead, the tapestry of beautiful melodies presented across the record owe plenty to electronic and ambient music, although in many ways were ahead of their time in terms of how those are interpreted by a live band rooted in rock. In short, a landmark release.

Review: The 2nd release for Verdant in 2020 'Limbic Resonance' is a double A side 12 sharing the hearts and minds of 2 talented producers. The imprint once again provides a stage for a nascent artist; Nesa Azadikhah from Iran is a key voice for the underground scene in Tehran. Her unique style of music assimilates her culture and personal experiences with a worldly and studious appreciation of deep techno. Alison Marks, an established producer from London has an enviable catalogue of releases as herself, Lumina and as a member of Wallflower with Leah Floyeurs. Notably heard on Rebirth and Dogmatik her music is typically filled with warmth and soul.
