Review: Pink Floyd were at the peak of their powers in the 70s and they started off the decade with a stunning love show in Montreux. This limited edition double vinyl LP contains nine tracks originally broadcast by Swiss Radio and drawn from all different sections of the band's discography. There is plenty of superb instrumental interplay between the various different members of the iconic prog rock band, and there are even two tracks included that have never been included on any other albums. This one is presented on two slabs of wax with full sleeve notes from Lucy Fersam.

Discodrums (12" + insert repress)

Deep House
  1. Discodrums (11:04)
  2. Flashforward (8:50)
Review: Two years on from the release of their superb debut album "The Night Land", John Talabot and Axel Boman re-boot their Talaboman project via a suitably strong comeback single. A-side "Discodrums" is something of a twisted late night epic - a heavily percussive workout that layers drums, creepy chords and weirdo electronics atop a druggy arpeggio style bassline. "Flashforward" is an altogether more melodious affair. It sees the experienced duo dip the tempo, reach for the dub effects and reggae style drum fills, and get busy with a hypnotic but warming synthesizer motif. It's not quite dub house, but it certainly has a similar sonic sensibility.

  1. Never Gonna Dance Again (6:40)
  2. Black Curtains (5:54)
  3. Black Magic Reaper (8:18)
  4. We're All Gonna Die (5:24)
Review: Luxxury has been responsible for some barnstorming edits already over the course of his career, so hopes are naturally high for the Los Angeles-based producer's latest collection of beefed-up reworks. He hits the ground running with a chugging, tastefully tweaked rework of George Michael's 'Careless Whisper', which makes the track sound like a cosmic take on Sade (that's a good thing by the way), before heading to 80s rock/electrofunk fusion on 'Black Curtains'. Over on the flip, 'Black Magic Reaper' is a drifting, dubbed-out Balearic blues gem, while 'We're All Gonna Die' is a subtly house-infused, electric-piano laden disco dancer of the highest order.

  2. Jam On Joy (6:13)
  3. Housewerk (UK mix) (6:29)
  4. Freedom (dub) (6:40)
Review: It's an undisputed fact that Mark Seven is the world's leading exponent of revivalist proto-house excursions, with his Parkwerks series of "raw and raunchy dubs for DJs" sounding like genuine long-lost cuts from the studios of Paul Simpson, Boyd Jarvis and Winston Jones. For example, the opening track on this EP, 'Hope Dub', could easily be an unreleased Serious Intention track from 1985, while the lighter and breezier 'Jam on Joy' boasts a thrillingly thickset groove and some fine echoing synth stabs. Elsewhere, 'Housewerk (UK Mix)' adds Yorkshire bleeps and 'Koro-Koro' style chanted vocals to the kind of stripped-back, late '80s house-not-house groove that would have gone down a storm at Sheffield's Jive Turkey night, while 'Freedom (Dub)' is a sparse proto-house/deep house fusion that makes great use of some Arthur Baker-esuqe Fairlight trickery.

  3. Groove Me (Son Of Lee Sunday Sleaze edit) (8:40)
  4. What's Going On (Island Times acoustic remix) (4:03)
Review: Just in time for Pandemic Summer #2 comes the beach and poolside flavors of ABC Versions (Afro, Balearic, Cosmic) on Rocksteady Disco. For this hand-stamped white label Rocksteady Disco assembles a crew of deep diggers. While these reimaginings harken back to the golden era of dances on the shores of Lake Garda, the White Isle, or all-night bath houses, it's hardly a retrospective. Leading the release is label boss Mr. PC's edit of "Drum Song", a kalimba-driven ecstatic freakout for discerning dance floors. Next up is Blair French's flip of a classic MPB joint "Circo Marimbondo", beefed up and primed for your next poolside hangout. Moving to the flip side, Son of Lee delivers with his meditative and transcendent rework of "Groove Me". Island Times closes the release with his blissed out acoustic edit of "What's Going On", which made its debut in Belle Isle Balearic's The Chillout Tent set in June 2020, with police helicopters flying overhead. Review: Edit fans will long have been tuned into the work of Japan's Mister Mushi, who is pretty much a God-like figure in the scene. His Mushi 45 label now comes on strong with another slice of gold that is all killer hip-hop meets funky grooves. IN vocal form 'Masai Mobb' has fantastic horn work that teases and pleases over rolling beats and with some golden era, smooth as butter raps. 5. It Ain't Right (DG Reel Need 2 edit) (7:02)
Review: Back in 2014, Chez Damier dropped two mixes of 'Speechless' on Popcorn Records, paying tribute to fabled Parisian nightspot Rex Club in the process. Now the Prescription legend brings the cut back to life for Adeen, and there's a whole cast of other big hitters involved as well this time. First up, Nicholas remixes 'Speechless' and goes in heavy on a Rhodes hook, while Damier himself doffs his cap to Berlin's house mecca on the fluttering, guitar-laced 'Panorama Bar mix'. Camille Migas creates something limber, expressive and sparkling for more reflective moments. On the flip, more high-grade remixes from Jef K and DG complete the package for some of the finest house music money can buy.

Review: Given that their last album was released way back in 2009, many thought we'd never hear from Kings of Convenience again. Yet here we are, bathing in the gentle beauty of Peace Or Love, the Norwegian duo's surprise sixth studio album. It's a formidably enjoyable affair that's as easy-going and gently sun-kissed as any of their previous excursions, with the duo adding quietly soulful, soft-focus vocals to tactile and pin-bright backing tracks that combine folksy acoustic guitars, twinkling pianos and lilting strings with shuffling rhythms that variously doff a cap to bossa-nova, samba, classic pop and French chanson. It's not difficult or challenging in any way, but given the state of the world right now, we're more than happy to settle for cheery, soft-focus beauty.

Review: Lumberjacks in Hell's latest release may well be the smoothest, warmest and most soulful chunk of deep house we've heard so far in 2021. 'Jus Move' is a cross-generational collaboration between Jonna and Javontte, with both providing slick, eyes-closed vocals atop a hazy, occasionally loopy backing track (all clipped organ sounds, unfussy drum machine beats and woozy chords). It's followed on side A by one of the final remixes by the late, great Michael Baumann AKA Soulphiction - a dusty, jazzy, warming and tactile take tailor-made for dancefloors at sunrise. Detroit's Marcellus Pittman provides a longer, Osunlade-influenced take on the flip - think deep Afro-house with plenty of jazzy mucsical details and you're close.

Review: Jalapeno Records is one of UK's funkiest dance labels and is has been for ages. Bristol beatmakers The Allergies are just as funky and always serve up a massive dose of sunshine on their Latin flecked sounds. The opener here is 'Move On Baby' and is one of the best tunes the pair have ever laid down. Its packed with great samples, a high speed 60s spy theme rhythm and vintage rhythm 'n' blues vocals over energetic drum breaks. It is a textbook offering form this duo with all the big hooks and horns you need to carry you to the next level. B-side banger 'Are You Ready' is a stomping soul sessions with huge vocal work from Miss Marietta Smith.

Review: It only seems like yesterday when Nick Cave delivered his wonderfully captivating joint piece with fellow-Australian Bad Seed Warren Ellis. In fact it was early March, and since then we've all likely been through the kinds of highs and lows this record reflects so accurately. There's a lot of space to Carnage, but it's also an album of intensity, in a refined and sophisticated way.

Packed with incredibly cinematic, theatrical and dramatic moments, at its loudest 'White Elephant' is bordering on a genuinely euphoric religious experience, one rousing and hugely emotional crescendo of chorus and big stage notes after another. At its quietest, 'Shattered Ground' sounds like one man alone with a piano and eternal sadness. Meanwhile, the title track is classic troubadour business. In summary, a grand, mesmerising and personal voyage.

  4. Princesse Erika - "Calomnie" (club mix) (8:41)
Review: A La French 1987-1992 is a new series from long time dance veteran Dimitri From Paris. It finds him digging deep into his vaults and returning with some of his earlier edit work, often with a Balearic feel over deep house drums and 80s disco vibes. The first in the three part series is a real smoother, with sexy and steamy sax lines on 'Yuku Mon Ukulele' bringing a late night feel. There is a slow motion party tune from Alpha Blondy that runs deep, Gerard Blanc then gets a little more upbeat but still with plenty of soulful and loved up vocal vibes and Princesse Erika closes with lush piano stabs and synth strings that light up your heart.

Review: The Shapeshifters have always been a great link to the glorious days of disco past. Their sound isn't fully retrospective, but is well versed in what made those originators so revered. In Glitterbox they have got a great home to do their best work and 'You Ain't Love' might just be that. It is a collab with vocalist Teni Tinks and is all super slick drums, rich string stabs and high gloss disco energy, topped off with a pipe busting vocal. It is served up in various different versions here but the original will take some beating.

Review: Fred Everything is a master of deep house that sinks you into jazz laced, lounge territory without ever sound trite. On this collab-heavy album for Lazy Days he shows off his many subtly different sounds, from the slow motion, flute laced disco chug of 'Palma' as reworked by Ilija Reedman to the superb broken beat electro of 'One In A Million' which races through the cosmos. On tracks like 'Un Dimanche Soir' there is a melancholic mood in the bass and keys that really hits home but yours never allowed to wallow but soon come deep cut boogie joints like 'Same Old Sound.'

His version of Claudia Philips's 'Donne Moi Du Feu' makes use of a sample from Carl Bean's 'I Was Born This Way' and is a gloriously sunny tune with New York house drums, finger clicks and s silky vocal as well as rap bass and rich organ sounds. Three other perfectly Balearic house tunes also make the cut with a super cool, jazz laced Philly mix of 'Soledad', slow and sun kissed vibes from Atlantique and more jazz stylings on the downtempo disco bliss of 'Ou Trover Les Violons.'

Each one finds the legendary French artist dig into his vaults to turn out some of his most Balearic edits and remixes. This second instalment opens with a smoky Chicago house groove run through with steamy French vocals. But he is very much a contemporary artist who has made a quick impression in the last couple years with his releases on Legere Recordings. They exude all the right hallmarks - the swooning female backing singers, the pirouetting drum work and steamy guitars riff that make you want to get up and dance in a slick Northern Soul style. Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing of any serious jazz enthusiast: a recently rediscovered recording of a live performance made by the Pharoah Sanders Quartet at the Grand Auditorium at Studio 104, Paris, in 1975. The tenor saxophonist is undoubtedly the star of the show throughout, though the fluidity of the double bass playing, the loose-limbed drumming and the rush-inducing breeziness of the piano parts - especially on "Love Is Here" parts one and two, which reminded us of another Sanders classic "You've Got To Have Freedom" - are all equally as ear-catching. Musically, it's as inspired as you'd expect, nestling somewhere between the great maestro's greatest "astral jazz" recordings and more traditional forms of jazz.

Review: Clipp.art's second release comes from Park Hye Jin, a debutant producer with a passion for adding her own stylish, half-sung, half-spoken vocals to a variety of well-made retro-futurist grooves. There's much to admire throughout, from the Jovonn style vintage New Jersey deep house warmth of "I Don't Care" - all twinkling piano lines, bustling drums and enveloping chords - and the chunky, head-in-the-clouds strut of opener "If You Want It", to the off-kilter deep space noisiness of "Close Eyes". Arguably best of all, though, is beautiful closing cut "Call Me", where Hye Jin's impassioned vocals ride glitchy hip-hop beats and fluid, Satie style piano motifs.

Review: Originally bestowed upon fans and newcomers alike in 2007, Riot! is Paramore's second album and represented a real evolution in sound for the band at the time. While never straying from the emo-punk-pop blueprint that first garnered them love and attention, this iteration saw the troupe explore more experimental and abstract ideas, while still giving us all plenty to pogo-on-about.

Hence the high chart ranking, in the US at least, and multiple gold records from sales in global territories. Music aside, it may or may not have been at this point when many ears began to realise that - even in the most angsty and immature moments - Paramore's lyrics are well and truly a cut above most of the rest. The combination being an irrepressible power that can't help but go straight for the emotional heartstrings, whether that means creating positive energy or inward reflection.

Review: House innovator Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers dives deep into his vast and venerated vaults for a new series of retrospective EPs on his own long running label. The tunes selected are either unheard unreleased on this label and first up is a selection that was once considered for the Another Side album that had Ron Wilson free-styling vocals. It's a high class selection of soulful electronic sounds with impassioned volts and tiny synths, ticking wooden hits and deep, spiritual vibes. 'Saspence' is from another dimension, while 'Nyte Light' is a unique acid workout.

  4. Floating Or Sinking (6:48)
Review: Welsh producer Harrison BDP is one of the most prominent house artist's in the game right now. Part of the reason for that is his range - he can do classic deepness as well as cheeky 2strep and big old breakbeats with equal elan. He shows all that on this new one for SITU, opening with the rave sound and dusty breaks of 'Every Cloud' before moving on to 'Sometimes It's Like That,' a sweet and seductive, spaced out house jam with neon keys. 'Perspective' explores a mid-90s tech house sound with frictionless drums and hi hats and 'Floating Or Sinking' then closing out on a fat bottomed and dubby roller.

Review: Acid Jazz Records' has got a licensing agreement with legendary Benin label Albarika Store that is seeing them put out some of the best music to have ever come from West Africa. Benin's almighty Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey made plenty of it. This latest 45 is another stunner with plenty of raw screams, wails and grunts all adding extra life and vitality to the already trilling guitars and bustling drum rhythms. Add in heavy percussion and you have a real heavy Afro psych-funk tune. The flip is more deep and soulful, and just as good for different reasons.

Review: This fascinating compilation on Finders Keepers is a second, follow up volume to a series first started back in 2019. It finds Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton chronicling them all, and it makes for an often intense story full of noise experiments, soot-black guitar playing and haunting atmospheres. Rarely less than peculiar is a brilliantly dark and occult collection of weird soncis and experimental drones, shadowy electronic moods and witchy atmospheres.

Review: 7's Clash's fourth outing is a trip into the gentle sounds of folk-rock and Americana. It is a meticulously crafted chop up of a 1970s tune with some fresh, fat drums and modern FX beefing it up for 2021 dance floors. It's got potential to work in myriad settings for early evening clubs to beach side parties. On the flip, label head Pete Herbert goes for a full Balearic vibe with the gorgeous strings floating above a more club ready groove. The vocals and deft guitar riffs add further atmosphere to this dubbed out, boat party ready, sunset calling and spaced out gem.

Review: Monolink has been teasing his long-awaited new album Under Darkening Skies for a long time. Finally it is here and it ushers in a new chapter for the esteemed producer after two years of hard graft and plenty of "love and frustration" in the studio. It is an honest, vulnerable sound with syrupy synths and gentle drum grooves overlaid with folky acoustic guitars. The song writing is standout, too, with plenty of hummable top lines and memorable hooks hanging in the air over the pulsing rhythms. Many have tried to fuse electronic music with indie before now, but few have ever done it better than Steffen Linck.

Seven years is a fair amount of time to wait between instalments, even if you did misplace them. Mark Jenkins returns under his rightly revered Pye Corner Audio moniker to add another chapter to his Black Mills Tapes series, in turn unveiling some seriously expansive downtempo electronics that still somehow manage to sound pretty intimate.

A lot has changed about everything since the last instalment in the series dropped, with the artist himself even managing to find time to put out another four albums. Up against those, what's here doesn't sound like it was plucked from another back catalogue entirely compared, but these recordings are a literal extension of those earlier Tapes, not least in sound and atmosphere. Taking us to other places of synthdom, halfway between 1980s movie scores, video games, epic ambient beauties and suggestive warm up off-rhythms.

Review: Pretty much any DMX Krew record could be bought on sight, such is the consistently high quality of the Bedford-born producer's productions. Even so, we're particularly enjoying his latest electro excursion on Breakin'. In its original form, 'Night Creatures' is a sparkling slab of starfall, acid-fired electro gorgeousness boasting a fine spoken word vocal from Blak Tony. An acapella of that vocal is also included on side A, alongside a tougher, TB-303-fired Dub mix. Over on the flip DMX Krew switches to warehouse-ready rave mode via the throbbing electro-meets-80s house goodness of 'Bounce Your Body', before offering some Aux 88 style hedonism on 'Dynamic Jit'.

Review: DJ Nasty started 2021 with a killer EP of bombastic, high-octane electro jams on Bass Agenda Recordings under his popular alternative alias, Detroit's Filthiest. This relatively speedy follow-up has a slightly different vibe, with only hard-wired closing cut 'Mythological' - all fizzing analogue synth-bass, rising lead lines and energetic electro beats - being as fearsome and intense as the tracks on his previous EP. That's not a criticism though, because the added depth, warm and musicality of the three other tracks is impressive. For proof, check the punchy, drowsy and bass-heavy 'Play on Playa', whose twinkling piano solos are a wonderful thing, and the laidback jazz-funk-meets-electro sunshine of EP opener 'Horizontal Bop'.

  2. Mark Hawkins - "Chasing Paper" (5:13)
  3. Iron Curtis - "Kerri On" (Chandelier dub) (7:04)

Review: Hudd Traxx was founded in 2005 in Huddersfield. It set about uncovering music from the likes of Iz & Diz, Stacy Kidd, Jason Hodges and Mike Steele - who all helped put the label firmly on the map with their releases. To celebrate a decade and a half in the business, Danny White and Co. have tapped some label alumni for fresh material to celebrate the occasion. Veteran American producer JT Donaldson is certainly no stranger to the label, and he serves up the boompty and hypnotic groove of 'What I Got', while Berlin's Iron Curtis pays homage to one of the scene greats on 'Kerri On (Chandelier Dub)' and Swiss deep house engineer Agnes returns with some typically dubby and minimal house on 'Embryonic Connections' .

Review: MIA aka Honey Deux proves why she is also known as The Sweetest Lady of Boogie with a heart melting new soul jam for Mango Hill. The production is lo-fi and dusty, with DIY beats and deeply buried rolling bass drawing you in, while her effortlessly cool and alluring vocals really bring the pain on opener 'Creatures Of The Night.' On the flip, the sounds are little brighter and more ready for a low key dance floor rather than a late night session. Here the squelchy synth bass brings the boogie, lush chords add rich feels and her vocals prove another irresistible centre point.
