Review: Now enjoying an ever more celebrated status in the hip hop world off the back of his albums with Madlib, Freddie Gibbs is back in solo mode with You Only Live 2wice, his third full-length studio album. It comes after the artist has endured some difficulties in his personal life and the experiences of overcoming those is what influences and inspires the music here. As he rises from the ashes - an idea which is embodied on the album cover - he goes it totally alone on all eight cuts with nary a guest in sight. He bares his soul throughout with the well-received and violin-laced single 'Crushed Glass' sitting next to standout hits such as '20 Karat Jesus' and 'Amnesia.' It's a great return.

Review: Public Enemy are often unsung when it comes to the golden era of hip-hop, with the obvious names getting all of the press. Despite their huge success with 'It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back', you don't hear Public Enemy acknowledged in the canon nearly as much as you should and it's a shame. The braggadocious bars, the heavy beats and the now-outdated concept of a hypeman all culminate in one of the greatest acts of the generation, who really were speaking to black youth in ways hip-hop wouldn't again until A Tribe Called Quest and Lauryn Hill came to town. 'Yo! Bum Rush the Show' was where it all started, an extreme talent in lyricism and delivery from Chuck D is elevated to the stratosphere with hype-man Flava Flav, undoubtedly the greatest to ever do it, and the Bomb Squad's wall of samples production. Tracks like 'Timebomb' and 'Sophisticated Bitch' are instant classics, and this indie-exclusive colour pressing is an amazing way to celebrate hip-hops 50th birthday.

Review: Yallah Gaudencia Mbidde was born in Kenya and raised in Uganda and has been a mainstay in the East African rap scene since first emerging in 1999. She mixes up rhymes in English with local languages Luganda, Luo and Kiswahili and has a poetic style that incudes experimental deliveries of her conscious lyrics. She has crept into the mainstream in Uganda and after her debut album in collaboration with Yallah and Berlin-based producer Debmaster she now offers the more charged-up Yallah Beibe. Review: Although it received a lukewarm reception on its initial 2003 release, Erykah Badu's third studio album, Worldwide Underground, has subsequently become something of a fan favourite - in part thanks to its' partially improvised nature and undeniably impressive fusion of classic hip-hop and soul elements. As this reissue on striking purple vinyl, the album has lost none of its sparkle in the 19 years that have passed since its' release. The multiple highlights include sweet, retro-futurist head-nodder 'Bump It (Part 1 & 2)', the nostalgia-seeped 'Back in the Day', Dead Prez hook-up 'The Grind' and the block party-rocking hook-up with Queen Latifah, Bahamedia and Angie Stone, 'Love of My Life Worldwide', a club-ready update of the Sequence's early rap classic 'Funk You Up' (which, of course, Stone featured on and co-wrote).

Review: Hak Baker's debut album is a socially and politically charged one, that represents the war in his own mind as well as "the culture war on the streets of London and the individual battles of his community." The sound is a spin on mid-00s indie with cheeky chappy vibes and scruffy pop hooks. Earnest cuts like 'Bricks In The Wall' and 'Run' sit with more angsty cuts like 'DOOLALLY (Unreleased)'. Baker has made waves in the last year with sets at Glastonbury, on Jools Holland and BBC's new Eastbank site. The year ahead brings UK and Germany tours and no doubt many more fans off the back of this record.
