Review: Kenny Beats, a name now as widely recognisable in hip-hop as Pierre Bourne, Metro Boomin, Timbaland or M1onthebeat, finally debuts his first ever LP for XL Recordings. Don't get it twisted, though: Beats is capable of much more than simple hearty beatmaking. On LOUIE, the artist achieves the difficult task of weaving personal sentiment through solely instrumental beats, using blue-noted music - and samples that could only be sourced from within the family - to reflect on his father's illness.

Review: God bless XL Recordings. The UK label has been at the forefront of boundary pushing music since its inception, and almost 35 years remains a seal of quality. A constant source of inspiring surprises and new sonic experiences. The kind of organisation that will take a punt on British polymath Jai Paul's demo album, which, by all accounts, is pretty hard to describe, let alone define. More so, the type of team that would, eight years earlier, support and release one of the artist's earliest songs, 'BTSTU'. Coming full circle, that tune closes this collection of stuff produced around the same time, all of which was going to form the debut album, Bait Ones. One low-quality CD-R of the work stolen and then leaked online later, and the artist stepped away from music until the end of the last decade, when this "perfectly imperfect" LP was finally allowed to see the light of day. A lo fi, glitchy, trippy, granular, sexy sound that owes as much to hip hop, pop and r&b as experimental noise, ambient dub, and electronic soul.

Review: Asian Dub Foundation's Enemy of the Enemy is one of the many classics in their arsenal. This is a first ever reissue of it on X-Ray Production. It as always develops their mix of traditional Indian music with electro, ragga and hip hop. This record brought with it a new sense of energy and forward momentum and has plenty of over-egged rhythms and debauched sounds that express revolt at the "liberal drifts of the Labour party under Tony Blair." The restless Londoners therefore made a social and political impact as well as physical dance floor one with this classic.

Review: Ben Carr is Carrtoons, a much hyped multi-instrumentalist and producer from New York. He has some mad skills on the electric bass and brings that to all of his tunes which range from innocent dance-pop ditties to loved-up new soul slow jams and late night hip-hop all with superb samples adding extra class. After a fine debut album Drink Edition, he is back with another full length that will soon swell your heart and make its way into your affections as well as your summer playlists. Saturday Morning has guests like Rae Khali and Topaz Jones and coupled with the well informed and original production they make for a standout record.

Review: Monkeyman is a collaboration between US rapper Kurious aka the rap star Kurious George and Finnish DJ and producer duo Cut Beetlez who crafted all the rhythms and grooves. It is a thoroughly contemporary work with glitchy electrons and scratchy breakbeats. There's a heavy industrial atmosphere to the music - an unsettling and dark edge even before you tune into the lyrical wordplay. That taps into themes of indifference, avarice and plenty more, all cut up with some mad scratching and blasts of horns that keep the whole thing alive and kicking throughout.

Review: Composer Michael Abels and Oscarr winner Jordan Peele have hooked up plenty of times on the big screen before, and this is another hugely successful partnership. Us was released in March 2019 and is an original nightmare that is set in present-day Santa Cruz on the Northern California coast. Lupita Nyong'o and Black Panther's Winston Duke star and the score features many highlights such as a 30-person choir, ten of them kids, on 'Anthem', while plenty of Eastern European instruments, violins and percussion were also employed. 1995 hip-hop anthem 'I Got 5 On It' by Luniz is also included and never fails to stand out.

Review: Perfectly straddling the transition from the bling rap era and the conscious rap movement, Killer Mike's 'RAP Music' was raved about when it released in 2012, receiving an 8.6 by Pitchfork and ending up high on countless end-of-year lists from publications. Killer Mike's hardstyle political lyricism, and exclusive star-studded line-up (including the likes of Scar, T.I. and E-IP) made this one of 2012's best releases. A consistent, high-quality flow with a fire pen and even hotter samples makes this one of the most overlooked hip-hop projects when it comes to the conversation of essentials. 'Go!', 'Untitled' and 'Southern Fried' are textual delights, to be expected from 2012 MVP front-runner EI-P. The latter being an ode to southern rap, often overlooked since the departure of Outkast (referenced in the lyrics "Ain't I Fresh, Ain't I Clean?"), even using the now infamous "Break" vocal sample used in Stankonia. Expect high class rapping, backed by soul claps, organ filled boom baps and funky bass. On a green double vinyl featuring those incredible instrumentals, this is the perfect treatment for what may be the most slept on rap project of that decade.

Review: Mount Kimbie's journey of self discovery continues with the next instalment in the MK3.5 series. Whether this really is a new era for the pair, or not is of course besides the point - Kai Campos and Dom Maker have displayed real evolution on the road to get their two-man project to this point, and at this point it really shows.

Dom's side is an altogether more colourful and varied affair in the sense it opens with sultry piano-driven late night drinks electronica via 'dvd', featuring the perfectly suited vocal cuts of Choker, before edging into rainier territory with 'in your eyes', welcoming everyone's favourite UK MC with loads to say, slowthai, and Danny Brown . Sparse but technically astute, Campos opens his lot with clubbier tones, namely the muffled crunch-house of 'Q', quickly moving through broken filter bass ('Quartz'), and warm, laidback beats ('Satellite'), among other vague descriptions.

Review: Arriving with some truly mind bending artwork from controversial guro manga artist Shintaro Kago, the new Flying Lotus album You're Dead! Is quite alot to take in upon first listen. Some nineteen tracks deep, Steven Ellison uses all the available space to draw you deep into the afterlife as he sees it, veering through heavily psychedelic jazz passages and next level beat explorations that demand you pay full attention. The iconic Herbie Hancock leads a high profile cast of contributing artists to Fly Lo's fifth studio LP and his most ambitious to date with Kendrick Lamar, Captain Murphy, Snoop Dogg, Angel Deradoorian, Thundercat and Niki Randa also adding to what is a transcendental listening experience.

Review: Somehow Soul Sold Separately is actually the first time that the now well-revered American rapper Freddie Gibbs has released an album on a major label. It has a concept too and finds Gibbs using a smart meta-narrative to make the point that selling one's soul for success in the music industry doesn't happen with a single instantaneous flick of the pen. Musically, there are plenty of tunes with Rick Ross, Anderson Paak and Pusha T, and Gibbs also explores more dark and conspiratorial sounds on tunes like 'Too Much', 'Dark Hearted', and 'CIA'. A fine major label debut.

Review: Mike Skinner is surely deserving of National Treasure status by now, is he not? From mischievous young MC upstart to garage innovator and now the voice of the nation, his journey has been remarkable and as this album shows it isn't done yet. He said in the built-up to it that for the first time in his career, he has allowed himself to be more loose with his lyrics, to say enigmatic things, make odd references and use stranger metaphors that might not always make perfect sense but that feel right in the moment. That makes it a great listen, as well as all the usual catchy hooks and compelling beats.

Now the classic record makes its way back into the wider public domain with superb production from DJ Scratch, Diamond D and The Alchemist ad plenty of timeless bars from Canibus, M.O.P., Busta Rhymes, Common and Talib Kweli. It is a golden era sound with boom-bap drums, socially minded lyrics, a mix of darker soul grooves and low-slung joints that sound as good now as ever, not least the iconic 'Simon Says.' An essential one for any hip-hop head's collection.

Review: It seems like we write about a great new compilation from French powerhouses Wagram every week. This is the latest and it takes aim at trip hop which is the niche sub-genre to emerge from the shadows of hip-hop, firstly in Bristol. This is an unashamed collection of what the label thinks are the biggest tunes and most classic joints from across the years all on one triple vinyl set. Some unpredictable inclusions are the likes of Radiohead's otherworldly hymn 'Everything In Its Right Place' amongst standouts like Snooze's 'The Chase' (Revisited By Fila Brazilia).

Undeniable is an 11-track long player filled with this artist's trademark sense of passion, romance and heartfelt songwriting. The sounds are a contemporary take on reggae with a fresh edge as well as a nod to the originators. The first single 'Everything' featuring Ghanaian star Stonebwoy has already pleased fans. The two collaborators hook up to great effect as they layer up soulful hooks that lament a love gone bad.

From his early groundbreaking work with CL Smooth onwards, he's brought a heavy sound steeped in the East Coast style, but with a sharp approach to production which makes his beats land crisper than most. His Petestrumentals series reaches back to 2001, when BBE deemed it necessary to shine a light on his next-level tracks. This fourth volume takes you back in on the expert touch of a grandmaster, with a clutch of productions so vibrant you never even imagine an MC riding on top.

Review: Village Live has just put out a compilation to make the label's fifth anniversary. Sadly, it was the last project co-founder Joey Deez worked on before he passed away. Now the label serves up an album dedicated to his memory from Aver, who created the first draft of it between finding out about Joey's passing and attending his funeral. It features collages of conversations the two had next to previously unreleased material he made during lockdown with Doron Segal. The result is an album of catharsis and musical therapy, that features both light and dark, hope and despair. The finished album features cuts by Jazz T, Evil Ed and Omas, as well as additional voice messages donated by Kuartz and Matt Smith.

Review: London might be seen as one of the hottest places for new, urban jazz sounds, but this album Second Light from Kepler Is Free shows that Greece also has its own vibrant scene. Their debut album was a quickly sold out success and now the jazz rock ensemble is back with more expansive work that traverses the 60s, 70s, soul jazz, hip hop and experimental in all new ways. The band was founded in 2018 and though all members are relatively young, they show their maturity here with more widescreen and entrancing sounds that come in collaboration with LEX, one of Greece's best-known rappers.

Review: Not many people could call an album Genius and get away with it but you'd be hard pushed to find anyone who disagreed that Detroit beatmaker J Dilla wasn't just that . His beats shaped a whole sound and scene when he first emerged and he is still just as revered many years after his death. He worked on various projects and put out plenty of solo material but her we're presented with another top collection of early cassette recordings. There are all his trademark dusty beats, soulful samples, dreamy melodic motifs and more to be enjoyed here.

Review: American rapper Pusha T dropped his fourth album It's Almost Dry earlier in 2022 on GOOD Music and Def Jam Recordings - his last with those labels. It is a heavyweight ensemble who have helped make it with contributions and features from the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams, Kid Cudi, Lil Uzi Vert and Nigo amongst many more. The record got instant acclaim from fans and critics alike and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. Pusha is in a confident mood throughout as he plays out a gangster sex saga in vivid fashion, with larger-than-life storytelling which betters his last album in 2018.

On the occasion of its 15th birthday it is getting this special reissue featuring appearances from dons like Jay-Z, Fabolous, Robin Thicke, Busta Rhymes, Babyface and Kanye West, among others. The album came after a series of strong mixtapes and Lil Wayne features on other seminal hip hop and r&b records but served as a fine reminder that he is never better than when in full creative control. The beats and bars have all aged remarkably well and very much stand up in 2023.

He also headlined the 2022 Coachella Festival and hit the Billboard Top 20 with his last EP. He reaches new heights here with his thought-provoking lyrics, catchy bars and sensuous r&b stylings.

Review: Italian rapper Villabanks is only 21 years old but has a well formed sound. The young Villabanks has dedicated himself fully to rap since the age of 15 and after a load of self-produced singles and mixtapes published on streaming channels and digital stores, the rapper published his first album, Non lo so, in 2019. This follow-up take sin reggae ton, trap, classic hip hop sounds and fresh r&b sentimental and lovestruck. He packs plenty of tracks in here, all of which are short, but together they add up to a compelling listen.

It arrives on limited brown vinyl and soon takes you back to the late 90s with its golden era boom bap production. The bars are in a mixture of English and French so recall sthe likes of MC Solar though come with a more smooth and seductive tone. Other or not you know this one from the first time around, it's well worth adding to the racks.

Review: National Album Day is of course all about reminding music lovers of the joys of a proper good full-length. Not collections of singles, not various versions of the same tune, but a record that was designed to be played from front to back in one sitting. It's something of an old school idea these days but one that always warrants revisiting. Here it's Gabrielle's Rise that gets special attention. The title track was of course one of the English singer's biggest hits and the album came in 1999. It was a huge commercial success and spent three weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, achieving quadruple Platinum status.

The neo-soul foundations dig deep with every nuance and subtlety D'Angelo has become known for; the Gaye-level harmonies of "Crusin'", the jazz meanders of "Sh*t Damn Motherf*ker" and the unstoppably sexual drive of "Lady"... If this isn't in your collection already, now is most definitely the time.

Review: Root Down is an experimental album from 1994 when The Beastie Boys locked themselves in a rehearsal space and went to town on studio experimentation and live jamming. It came between "Paul's Boutique" and "Check Your Head" and resulted in two previously unreleased versions of the title track and snippets of music recorded while on tour in Europe. There is the typical Beastie Boys mix of floor rocking riffs but with funky new flows stitched in and thus charts the period in which the band went from their post punk guitar roots to a more new-groove driven sound.

Review: When he released third album "Me Against The World" in 1995, Tupac Shakur was arguably the biggest name in hip-hop. As we now know, it wouldn't last, with the LA rapper losing his life in a drive-by shooting 12 months later. As tragic as his demise was, his music still resonates and this album - here reissued to celebrate its 25th anniversary - is arguably the best of the lot. Produced by an all-star cast of beat-makers (Brian G, Easy Mo Bee, Tony Pizarro and Moe ZMD included), the set offered a glossy and polished take on the then dominant gangster rap style while including numerous nods to R&B, swing and G-funk. If you don't already own a copy, grab one of these pronto.

Review: Originally issued back in 1998, Mezzanine remains the most commercially successful album released by Bristol troupe Massive Attack, thanks in no small part to the Liz Fraser-featuring "Teardrop". This third album signalled a change in sonic direction that played more explicitly on the darkness and tension that was always an undercurrent of their much loved debut Blue Lines and successor Protection. After numerous bootlegs over the years, Virgin have done the right thing and presented this official reissue of Mezzanine to appease fans of Massive Attack and it's clear the LP has lost none of it's bewitching power. The Quincy Jones and Isaac Hayes sampling "Exhange" and "Exchange" remain a delight in particular.

Review: Beastie Boys Music is a new greatest hits compilation album that serves as a companion to 2020's Spike Jonze-directed Beastie Boys Story and 256-page photo book, Beastie Boys Book. The double vinyl affair takes in 20 classic tracks that span the iconic group's more than 30 year career, with the biggest of the big such as 'No Sleep', 'Sabotage' and 'Intergalactic' all making the cut. By now these are well worn classics, but their impact on rap cannot be overstated, and the tunes still get any party banging thanks to the immediacy of the beats and sharpness of the rhymes.

Review: First things first: the world has come a long way in its attitude to women since this album was first released, so in 2019, 2001 sounds - at least lyrically - wrong on many levels. But it is also still very right when it comes to g-funk, west coast rap and second wave hip hop sounds. Listening to it from start to finish is to spend 90 minutes as a fly on the wall of the lives of Snoop, Dre, Eminem and all the rest of the high profile guests. Jam packed with classics and gold standards, this is an album of its time but one that was never bettered.

Review: McGyver's new long player LP Carpe Orbem is a bilingual work of art. The title translates to "The World is Yours" in Latin and the Dutch MC says it has a standalone concept that mixes Dutch and English raps. They are delivered in harsh tones and textures over boombap beats with turntablists and live musicians supporting. The LP re-contextualizes Was classic album as an outsider looking in, with production from legendary Grammy Award winning talents like Large Professor (who works don the classic Illmatic), as well as Buckwild, DJ DNS and other upcoming underground stars.

It is a dark and raw record that took hip hop into new territory back in the mid-nineties and features a number of skits detailing a mysterious character's search for a black market. What is also for sure, is that the beats hit hard here and cast a looming but alluring shadow.

Review: Hip-hop loves its personal beefs and ongoing musical feuds and this release on Tuff City has one of them squarely in focus. It features all the key players in the Roxanne feud from 1985. First up, 'Roxanne's Revenge' was produced by Marley Marl in response record to UTFO's 'Roxanne, Roxanne' and first came on the Spin label as Round 1. It was then reissued in 2009 and now gets another repress. It's a treasure trove of rap and early hip-hop goodness with boom bap drums and plenty of brilliantly expressive word play and magical mic work.

This Record Store Day Black Friday 2022 special is another cat in port that finds the American talent gaming out on his trusty SP1200, an iconic drum machine and sampler combo that very much defined early rap and hip hop. The album was made with notorious beatmaker FaltyDL at jamming sessions that were held all over the world from Lisbon, Paris and New York to Chicago and Los Angeles. The live instrumentation, says Mykki, "just transported me. It enabled me to dream in a way that I had never dreamed with my own songwriting. Review: A lot can change in two years or so. Not least if 2021 saw you release one of the most celebrated records of the current decade, tackling the mental health crisis head on in the midst of a global pandemic. An album that despaired and threw its hands up, declaring that we, collectively, are not alright and something needs to change, all via staggeringly poetic prose, at times bordering on spoken word. Returning from that triumphant episode, Arlo Parks follows up with The Soft Machine, an LP that lands after most of the dust from that global emergency has settled, and she's relocated to sunny Los Angeles to live with partner and alternative rapper, Ashnikko. To say the result is something that sounds warmer, more appreciative of what you've got rather than focussed on what isn't would be an understatement, but the exquisite songwriting and willingness to speak honestly about major issues remains.

The Promo (3:37)
Ultimatum Ultramix (4:32)
Review: This 1988 debut album from Jungle Brothers eschews the use of the sampler, choosing instead to lay down these fresh beats by recorders, all looped by hand, eight bars at a time. The record also features Q-Tip for the first time on the excellent "Black Is Black" which features one of the few samples on the album as the voice of Gil Scott-Heron is stitched into the rolling beats. Smash hip-house hit "I'll House You" was added to later versions of the album and is included here with other gems like "Braggin & Boastin" and "Behind the Bush".

Review: Independent New York City rapper Smoke DZA and LA beatmaker Flying Lotus are hip-hop heavyweights in their own right but now they come together for their new EP Flying Objects with a bunch of equally high-profile guests such as Black Thought from The Roots, plus Estelle, Conway The Machine, and more. Together they have cooked up a mind-altering sonic trip featuring spaced-out pads and crunchy beats. The bars are hard and speak of the Black experience and the synths are often otherworldly and celestial as they soften the edges of the lyrics. Another great project from both.

Review: West Coast hip-hop artist King T's Thy Kingdom Come album was his fifth studio recording and it was made around the same time as some of the genre's most iconic ever albums - namely Dr. Dre's 2001 and Eminem's The Slim Shady LP, both of which were multi-platinum record breakers. As such it has plenty of the sonic hallmarks of the era with guest spots from the likes of Dr. Dre, NWA's MC Ren, DJ Quik, Too $hort, Ice-T and even NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal. King Tee is one of the rappers Dr Dre was to work with when he left Death Row Records to form Aftermath Entertainment in 1996. This album never got flawed at the time but finally sees the light of day now.

Review: Last year, former Sons of Sam rapper Raphael Xavier AKA The Xav offered up his first ever solo single, the Amazing Maze produced A.G collaboration 'Come On'. That cut - a genuine boom-bap treat featuring some tight scratches from DJ Danetic - naturally features on Black Duke, the Philadelphia MC's long awaited debut album. It's a hugely entertaining set all told, with Xavier's distinctively fluid flows (and those of guests including Ed O.G and Omar) riding deliciously jazzy, warm and sample-rich "golden era" style beats produced by a cast-list that includes Lord Finesse, Large Professor and Nottz. If you're in the mood for some classic-sounding hip-hop, it's an album that should be right up your street.

Review: Oakland's SNDTRAK dropped his long awaited debut album back in 2021. It was a big hit right off the bat and now it gets a welcome reissue. These are snappy beats with rolling drums, deep hip hop instrumentals that bring the best of the dusty school to fresh new school thinking. Delicate melodies are buried within, soulful vocal smears drift in and out of ear shot and well played bass slowly rotate sunder the tunes to bring languid funk. Sunny and heart aching, heat damaged and stoned, this is a warming soundtrack on many different levels.

Review: Volume 6 of the SCM Flip Sessions is from the one and only J Rocc. It has been put together as a celebration of the end of the tenure of former President Trump, or "the most trash president in the history of the United States," as the label puts it. Across just two tunes, SCM brings you 14 flips of possibly the most sampled song in hip hop. They are Althea out together by the inimitable J Rocc with the hope being that this is a document of protest that will stand the test of time. One pressing only, 500 copies in all, do not sleep.

Review: Detroit's notorious and contemporary hip-hop tastemaker has been big in the game for over a decade. He managed to put out a faultless run of records from this, 2011's Shotgun & Sleek Rifle, right up to 2020's Innocent Country 2. He manages to draw on plenty of golden soul while his own smooth flows light up each tune and show what an idiosyncratic talent he is. This 10th-anniversary edition of what might be his best record is a brilliant reminder of his abilities. Well worth having for any discerning hip-hop head and is a true modern classic.

Review: "Ruff Draft", originally released in 2003, is a sought-after album that remains the elusive key release in J Dilla's catalogue. This has freewheeling, in-your-face synthesizers, and an uncharacteristically sample-heavy approach that is as banging as it is experimental.

Review: Kiefer closes down his trilogy of EPs on Stones Throw with fantastic final offering, Between Days. This one takes on the ideas of transition, of growing old and rising fiends, looking for new purpose as life changes and trying to stay hopeful. It features a host of the beat maker's mates such as Sara Sithi-Amnuai on trumpet, Will Logan on drums and Paul Castelluzzo on guitar, and also includes some great covers of The Cure's 'In Between Days' and Roy Ayers's 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine.'
