Review: Madmua Records was so keen to reissue this 1966 gem from Spain's "national pop" scene that they spent a best part of a year tracking down the singer behind the record, Pilar Espi AKA Sonia. Listening to the title track, an infectiously funky, Spanish Language cover of Rolling Stones' favourite 'Get Off My Cloud', it's easy to see why. That track, a faithfully fuzzy, swinging-sixties interpretation, is undoubtedly the highlight, but there's plenty more fun to be found across the EP. Check for example the American girl group-influenced stomp of 1964's 'Si Tuviera Un Martillo' and '1,2,3', a horn-heavy chunk of Detroit soul-influenced Spanish pop that first featured on the flipside of the original 1966 release of 'Aqui En Mi Nube'.

Review: This clear vinyl "45" dips into the small but perfectly formed mid '90s catalogue of Oakland duo Rappin' Ron and Ant Diddly Dog, whose take on gangsta rap was more laidback and melodfious than some of their contemporaries. 'All Rapped Up', which first surfaced as the pair's debut single in 1994, combines a luscious, laidback, jazz-funk-sampling boom-bap beat with typically descriptive, entertaining lyrics detailing life on the streets of the pair's home city. Over on the reverse you'll find original flipside 'Smoke Season', here presented in extended form. Lyrically it covers similar territory, but musically it's an unashamed G-funk workout full of rubbery bass, smooth synths and P-funk influenced motifs.

Review: Alessandro Alessandroni (often said to be the most famous whistle in the history of film thanks to appearing on famous spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars') is a legendary composer and musician who very much had a big say in the characteristic sound of Italian soundtracks during the 60s and 70s. This lovely 7" from Four Flies showcases that with two well chosen cuts that have been taken from a dusty tape found in the great man's vault. 'Shine On' is superbly stylish funk with some seductive vocals and rolling drums all peppered with golden chords and dynamic horns. 'Prohibition' is a little more mellow but still features magic Rhodes and characterful horns.

Review: Hivern Discs presents a very intriguing and totally unique project from Drames Rurals, a shadowy collective endeavour credited to "meritxell, oriol, ignasi and juns." Presented across three 7"s packed in a handmade sackcloth box, the careful presentation of the sounds matches up to the music, which rolls at low tempos and deals in hypnotic, ritualistic mantras with an earthen, spiritual feel. There's a dubby twist at times, and it feels like a series of happenings from an in-tune gathering rather than an over-composed project, and therein lies the magic. Who knows whether Hivern main man John Talabot is involved, but after last year's low-key Koraal project he might well be without making a big deal about it.

Review: While influencing a massive array of modern emo, pop-punk and indie-rock outfits, Hot Water Music have made it abundantly clear that they don't feel the need to go home just yet.
Their latest, sad times lamenting opus, 'Feel The Void', sees the group recording for the first time with latest addition Chris Cresswell (The Flatliners), who stepped into the band initially for live settings upon Chris Wollard taking a sabbatical for mental health reasons.
Now, for the first time since 2004's 'The New What Next', the band have opted to work with producer Brian McTiernan, arguably responsible for the three best albums to come from HWM during their 'glory days'.
Beyond a return to form, everything from the anthemic 'Hearts Stay Full' to the muted crawl of 'Ride High', screams of a seasoned group of artists with so much more to say. Slick Walk (Merse & DJ Robert Smith) and Fingathing's Sneaky steppe dup first with 'Bird's Lament', a nice cut up beat with twanging double bass and dark cello vibes. Review: Blissful boogie reissue from Junko Ohashi, whose 7-inch promo for 'Dancin' here functioned as the promo material for the 1983 album 'Point Zero'. Sounding just as rough, farty and raw as its original LP cut, the track is a perfect example of what Japan brought to disco - blending it largely with city pop - at the time. Review: Hitomi Toyama's 'Sweet Soul Music' originally made it to wax last year, when the track appeared as part of a rare Japanese funk compilation curated by the sound's brightest stars, Wamono. Now, though, it gets a proper release on 7", and is backended by the sultry B-side 'Wanna Kiss', which sounds pitched up and chirpy in its shrill alto vocals, which assure us we're held. The A, meanwhile, is as horny (in both senses of the word) as ever, quite obviously singing the praises of "sweet soul music... I love you!"

Review: Black Moon was a vital hip-hop collective from the East Coast. They were making waves at the same time as peers such as Jeru The Damaja and of course the legendary Mobb Deep. They shared plenty of sonic characteristics - the low-slung beats, the dark sense of soul, the pervading menace and moodiness that makes the tunes so alluring despite being stripped back. Her paean for desirability, 'Unloved Unwanted Me', was a full-on lamentation of the human condition in album form. Review: Gustavo C's G.U.S label - short for 'Golden Unreleased Songs' - exists for one purpose: to offer-up limited-edition singles featuring previously unheard gems from the disco and boogie era. The label has already released buried treasure from Central Line and Kenni Rightout and here delves into the archives of obscure 80s electrofunk outfit Odyssey & Co, a band not to be confused with the far better-known Odyssey. 'It's On' was originally recorded and mixed in 1983, but for one reason or another never hit stores. It's a quality slab of soul-fired boogie-funk rich in rubbery bass guitar, spacey synths, eyes-closed vocals and post-electro machine drums. The A-side original mix is on-point, but we prefer the slightly stretched out and more dancefloor focused flip-side 'Dance Mix'.

Review: This reissue of The Jungle Rat is the second in a series from Names You Can Trust. The first was a doozy, as is this one, and suggests their Panama Gold Series is going to be totally essential. This is the first time this particular holy funk grail has ever been reissued. It's raw, expressive funk with big rhythms, bigger horns and impassioned vocals with plenty of florid melodic motifs. On the flip, things slow down and get more deep and pensive with 'Have A Little Faith.' The belting vocals are repacked with real power and backed with talkative horns.

Review: The cover art for this limited 7" is worth the overprice alone and very much captures the nostalgic feel of the 80s disco sounds you will find within. This one marks Davey H's (aka David Humphrey) debut release for Six Nine Records and surely there will be many more after it because 'Keep Movin'' is a gem. The drums are lithe and lively, the vocals full of heart and soul and the chords cosmic. On the reverse is a T Groove UK remix that slows things down a little and ups the heft of the drums.

Review: Main Source cut a sharp figure when they broke through in the early 90s, made up of Toronto's K-Cut and Sir Scratch and New York's Large Professor. Their debut album Breaking Atoms is one of the greatest from that golden era for hip-hop, and there's no shortage of hot tracks to pick for a 7" pressing, but here Japan's P-Vine picks out the classic 'Live At The Barbeque' and backs it up with Large Professor's own self-titled joint. This is early 90s hip-hop at its best, boiled down on a handy little single for those moments when you just want the hits.

Review: We've been treated to a few revisits of tracks from the mighty Main Source and their seminal debut album Breaking Atoms, and now P-Vine are pressing up two of the best on a crafty little 7". 'Looking Out The Front Door' is a stone cold classic through and through, riding a dense and dusty break as Large Professor laments on love gone wrong. Despite the downcast lyrical theme, the vibe of the track is sun-kissed mellow gold, thanks in no small part to the buttery Rhodes licks. On the flip we get 'Snake Eyes', the opening cut from the album which cemented Main Source's legendary status back in 1991.

Review: Six Nine Records welcomes honey-voiced soul man Terrill Paul to the label for the first time, via a two-track 45 written and produced by the prolific Stone Paxton. The cut for dancefloor plays is undoubtedly A-side 'This Time', a pleasingly nostalgic nod to turn of the 80s disco-soul whose grooves, lyrics and instrumentation recall the celebratory brilliance of Earth, Wind and Fire. Review: Active as a DJ from the late 70s, it wasn't until the end of the 80s that Carlo Trojo AKA Don Carlos unveiled his studio talents with his single, 'Alone', which quickly grew to cult status within the international deep house scene. He soon became known for a sound that delicately combined house rhythms with Afro-American jazz influences, flecks of disco, hints at progressive house and occasional flashes of electronic soul. Originally released in 1992 by Calypso (Irma), 'Mediterraneo' is a wonderful example of the signature Don Carlos sound - deep, jazzy house at its best.

Review: Italian band I 5 Monelli dropped this obscure but brilliant bit of psyched-out-of magic in 1967. It has made its way onto many well-known compilations since then but has never before had an officially sanctioned reissue release. It is limited to 600 hand-numbered copies and features an insert that tells the story of the group for the first time. The tune itself is raw and potent, a driving tune with killer organs and vocals that takes you back to the 60s, riding a Vespa in a long green overcoat, even if you never did that before.

Review: A series of Marc Moulin releases are on the way right now courtesy of various reissue projects and this one is pressed up on nice orange vinyl. The Belgian beatmaker is known for downtempo grooves but shows a different side here with two tracks alongside his band, later known as Placebo but here still known as Kiosk. 'Mona Call' is a busy and jazzy cut with dancing drums. 'Waterproof' arrives on the flip carries on in the same vein, with big horns bursting though the arrangement. These are two of the very many crucial tunes in the Moulin catalogue.

Fans of hard-assed hip-hop need not worry though as this limited edition picture disc is here to save you. The title track is full of big raw horns and dark soul synths, menacing bars and low slung grooves. Flip it over and you're treated to a live rehearsal version of 'The Unknown Comic' which is a clattering cut with lo-fi fizz and static hum adding extra edge, texture and authenticity to the beats.

Review: Bolivian psyche-surf rock, anyone? Welcome to the world of Los Laser, a beguiling yet immediately infectious outfit. Vuelven! first hit in the 1970s, at which point most of our fact-checked knowledge about this release comes to a sudden stop. And all the better for it. Rather than getting bogged down in brief biopics, then, let's just say this is definitely one for the guitar-loving diggers, who won't find it many other places. Sonically speaking there's plenty of reference points to what was happening across South America musically at the time. While steeped in conservative traditions (often due to the enforced religion through colonialism situation), the decades after World War II were fertile ground for anti-establishment youth movements across the world, and this continent was no different. So, while the exotic lyrics and jangling six strings don't scream "smash the system" today, you'd better believe this was well against the grain back in 1971.

It features tracks by 3TOB, an outfit originally born in 2019 by band members of Tone and earlier in the year they dropped the sultry hip-hop, soul and r&b album Trading Places. Those tracks are "My Baby' and 'Love Will Find Its Way' and neither were on the album and have been streaming only up to now. They are a timeless fusion of heart-melting harmonies and silky beats for those loved up late night sessions.

Review: BDQ's next limited 7" is a superb three-way collab between Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity. Their long-lost version of classic dancer 'Jeannine' is powered by wandering basslines and swinging Hammond Organ chords that bring warmth to the free-flowing jazz vocals up top. It has never before been on 45rpm and has been all but unknown for the last 50 years but was recently rediscovered while the label head was looking for something else for the recent 'Auger Incorporated' compilation on Soul Bank Music. On the flip is a mod jazz dancer who is just as hip and ready to make an impact.

Review: Discodelic has established itself well with its first ten releases and now the 11th keeps up the momentum with a pair of funky psychedelic jams. First up is the Wilson Boys with their 'Funky Bocas' which pairs busy Afro rhythms with tight interwoven guitar lines and their impassioned vocal cries. Review: Discodelic does not muck around when it comes to putting out their music on vinyl - they serve up a standard black version but often also a cured pressing alongside it. And that's what we have here - a yellow and red splattered vinyl 7" with a booklet featuring some backstory, and all heavily limited to just 100 copies. Musically this one packs a punch too with Wilson Boys opening up with 'Funky Bocas' - a busy Afro rhythm with tight interwoven guitar lines and big vocal cries. On the flip is Alma Fuerte's 'Baila Muchacha' with its hypnotic mix of aw rock guitars, shuffling samba rhythms and flamey vocals.

Review: The Delights were somewhat unsung heroes from the peak days of the Philly Soul scene back in the 60s and 70s. The local talents were first known as The Twilights and only recorded three demos in their early years though they did land on Phil-L.A of Soul in the mid-seventies. The musicians in the band did also work on several other records with other artists so had plenty of chops as this new 45rpm shows. It features 'Now We're Sure' with soaring vocal harmonies and lovely funky bass next to smooth drum work. The instrumental allows that to shine through even more.

Review: A pair of classic Donovan tracks get pressed up to this new 7" from The state51 Conspiracy. They are taken originally from his seminal double album A Gift From a Flower to a Garden and come in a beautifully printed new sleeve with golden details and limited to just 500 copies. Both are mixed in mono and first is the delicate falsetto of 'The Tinker and the Crab' with is Americana overtones and light flute motifs next to the acoustic guitar strumming and 'Wear Your Love Like Heaven' is another lushly layered folk rock sound.

Soul
Review: Soul Direction's 19th outing might be their best to date. It is some top work from The Natural Soul Brothers Ltd that was originally recorded in Philly for the Wally-O Production stable back in 1970. It never got released after originally being laid down back then and that's a shame because it has plenty of great talent on display. The soul grooves are defined by a haunting sound and lingering vocals that make for a mellow but involving track. On the flip, there is more rambunctious energy, prickly drum rhythms and free-form guitar riffs next to a big vocal.

Deep House
Review: The Dolfin label has been rolling out some high quality jams of late and are currently building up to a much anticipated album from Blaque Dynamite that is worth keeping an eye open for. Now they look to Felix for this hand-stamped vinyl 7" 'Kween In My Eyes'. It is a slow, low slung and heart-warming deep house sound with a hooky beat and jazzy chord draped over the drums as a smooth r&b vocal is smeared into the mix. On the flip is the even more downbeat and late night 'Domelo Ance' with its lazy and heat damaged chords making for a super seductive sound. A steamy 45 then, for sure.

Both tracks on this limited gold vinyl were recorded in 2018.
